This was the best tutorial for converting a photo to svg. I did it a few years ago. But Inkscape is a newer version now so this tutorial is outdated now 😭
Thank you for your tutorial. I have been wanting to learn how to do this for a while. I also paused a lot and took detailed notes. I can't wait to try this out and see what I can create.
I like your video on converting a portrait to inkscape but after trying it this week it didn't work very well on my laser engraver. Thoughts on how to do it better. Perhaps something besides Inkscape. I can use Inkscape for many things but I cannot make it work on portraits.
Helpful video. I have used similar steps to create SVG files. I chose two layers. One with more refined face details(black) and the other more generic with face outline (grey) and with the SVG files I created a 3d object that Printed on the 3d printer in 3 colors, whicte background then grey layer and black layer on top.
I agree with some comments that it was too fast and the sound was awful. However, I just kept pausing and rewinding and managed to see it all. I wouldn't want just black and white, so, assuming I have a photo with not too many colours, could I select colour and get coloured layers?
jenEcustoms Tutorials You should consider RE-doing the video again. Perhaps a voiceover instead. Thank you for taking the time to share. It really helped.
I tried to follow but it was a bt to fast for me so I quit and started over the video and stopped with each step. Yes it took me a long time but it worked.
Question....how do you get the box that's already on Inkscape when you first open it? And I keep getting a box when I first open it (jpeg bitmap image import). Asking Image Import Type: Like Image DPI From file, or Default import resolution. Image Rending Mode: None, Smooth, or Blocky. I see where I click the box Don't ask again, but I wanted to see what I needed to do about these questions first. Also, I couldn't hear where you saved your image before adding to Save As. I noticed where yours had a space to where you could click on it, and it would open, mines not like that. Thank You So Much!
Are you talking about the page border? It doesn’t affect anything you do except for the preview of the file when you’re looking in your explorer. It’s a “document” setting (try control + d, I think, or maybe shift + CTRL + d). The fastest way to import a file is to just open your explorer on top of Inkscape, but smaller, then drag the file over to Inkscape. No boxes to worry about. Hope that helps!
By selecting "simplify" on the Path menu, this will minimize the nodes. But, be careful, sometimes, depending on the image and colors, etc, it may take away too many and this will alter your paths of the image to a degree, but it doesn't hurt to try. If you don't like it then hit Command Z to step back and start over.
People use them to make lots of different crafts. Ornaments, glass memory “boxes,” I’ve even seen shirts. I’ve never made anything with them, but I know this was something a lot of people in multiple different Facebook group’s asked for help with.
The microphone is a bit annoying in the beginning, but you quickly get used to it and concentrate on the material instead. It'd be nice if you can make a follow-up video where you actually print this out on vinyl on a Cricut machine.
The colors Vanished Magically

I think it's great. To the point, not too fast for me. Thank you for not gibber gabbering like some tutorials do.
love the tutorial! clearest explanation I've yet seen of anything on I.S.
Never used Inkscape before, this will be so helpful in my future crafts! Thanks!
Thanks! This was a great tutorial and it helped me finish a file in minutes that I had been struggling with for days. :)

When trace bitmap window opens I do not have live box or the remove background. Is this because I’m using a MacBook or does not to do with my image?
I’m sorry - I don’t know. I use a PC. Maybe someone else who uses a MacBook can help?

Yes, you can. I typically draw those, though, versus "converting" them.
Have you updated your Inkspace software? If so, could you update this guide? Thanks
Inkscape must be different now. There is no "live preview" button and no "gray" button. I'm so lost!
They probably changed it
Good tutorial. It's only a big pity that the sound quality is very poor.
Sorry! Hope you were still able to follow along

This is a great tutorial but I cannot figure out how you changed the gray layers to black. Can you explain?
Select the grey and go down to color pallets and choose black.
Great tutorial ! Thanks!

What program are you using to edit the photo please and where can I get it?
Dumbass it's called inkscape don't u see the title ?????
Inkscape won't recognize my jpg, bmp or photo files. I can import them and see them but none of the commands work.
Thank you for your help!
It takes a very long time for it to do it's thing. any suggestions on how to speed that process up?

thank you lovely photo aswell
I'm not understanding what the purpose of this is. What do you do with that low quality b/w image?
