How to Scream like Chester Bennington EXPLANATION & FOLLOW ALONG TUTORIAL

แชร์

  • (Re-upload with a longer and better false fold activation explanation)
    Chester's fry scream is a combination of a thinned out chest voice (some call this chesty mix, some call this edge, some call this belting) creaking (some call this vocal fry or vocal fold distortion) with the vocal folds, compressing the larynx (pulling the false folds into the windstream) and letting the false folds vibrate and create distortion.
    Try learning this scream not from the quiet vocal fry but from learning the compression and false fold distortion first. Then sing higher and higher with it, without going much louder. Choose very open vowels like EHHH while going higher. If you keep the level of compression high and just raise in pitch gradually your voice will try to break around either G4 (if you are a baritone) or C5 (if you are a tenor). Once your voice breaks up, just stay on the scream and get it to stabilize.
    If your voice does not want to break up (creak, vocal fry) try going higher with the pitch into a territory that is outside of your range. If you are an experienced singer and you have trouble with this (like i have) try singing the high note, while having false fold distortion, but go quieter on it, without letting it slip into head voice.

    This tutorial was really helpful at understanding the fundamentals. Do you think you could cover Michael Barr from volumes? Most notably his performances at warped tour 2014? It seems like he gets these incredibly powerful screams with little to no effort. Does his method sound healthy to you? I haven't seen any vocal coach cover volumes before.

    • @SINGANDSCREAM
      @SINGANDSCREAM  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah that is the same method but a bit louder and chestier with the voice underneath. You can hear how his voice does not breakup completely. There is still his ''Yelling'' pitch inside. That's because he goes into the vocal fry from a higher energy coordination, a chestier mix, and not a lighter mix like i use here.

    Oh my God it’s working I love you so much right now. My old way of doing growls was very violent and flappy. More of a gutteral type of false chord thing. I’m using this method to sing some Opeth and it’s working amazingly. I’ve been trying so hard to do this forever. I even hit some really dirty pitched stuff like in this video.
    Instead of doing the HUHP then pushing as hard as I can I’m doing something different from what I always do and trying to make it sound really light and crappy and no strain and it’s working way better!
    Wowowowow thanks so much. I knew the whole time I was like it just seems like I’m missing one thing and then I would have it but no one could explain it properly like you did. And you made it so easy. If I had caught your video long ago I’d probably be really good by now. Thanks man!!!!!!

    PERFECT EXPLAINED HOW TO GET THE FALSE CORD SOUND! I'm practising it right now and I start coughing sometimes when I do it and have a hard time finding the rattle. I can do the hold and talk with it, but when I do a note It's like I let go and my vocal folds takes over and I get a raspy sensation that makes me cough.

    • @SINGANDSCREAM
      @SINGANDSCREAM  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it sound very similar to what i am doing or quite different? Triggering the false folds the first couple times can lead to a coughing sensation, but the vocal folds should feel and sound the exact same afterwards and the coughing sensation should go away after doing it a couple times. If your voice is different after this and the coughing sensation does not go away you are doing something else that is harmful and you need to tackle the distortion differently.

    • @bharkanlol
      @bharkanlol 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SINGANDSCREAM I guess I have a hard time holding a note with the compression. When I hold the note it's like I'm letting through more air than I need and I start to cough. The triggering of the false cords kinda sounds like your.. but mor clicky and less "gritty" or "Muddy".

    You alllmost had it! However: Chester’s sound actually comes from a different place in the mouth than during this demonstration. The tone was almost there but the reason Chester has a wider frequency distribution with the same tone/note is because he is not constricting so much in the throat. Think of sending the scream into your nasal passage. He moves the place of distortion further forward and up in the mouth.. So it’s really happening in the roof of his mouth NOT in the back of his throat like this demonstration. Think about it as triangulation between your lowest voice and where you’re singing to, then move that 3rd point (distortion) further forward in the mouth.

    Thank you so much for this!!! Once you get the practice down that you said to do how do you get to the point where you can add in that vocal fry? How do you know you’re ready, and is it dangerous if done improperly? Maybe I could just search how to do a vocal fry but would that be correct? Then just start doing this and combine the vocal fry once I’ve got this down? Or will it just come naturally as you get louder, like you said your voice will naturally become that way because it wants to as you get louder?

    Hey, i really want to learn this scream technique. But i don't know if its because of my vocal range (Barittone). But it just don't sound. I can do Fry Scream and False Cord. But this kind of pitch scream does not happen.

    Hello, I have been practicing this technique for several months and I do well when I sing in a medium tone, almost speaking, but when I want to go up I find it difficult to do the distortion, I feel that this distortion pulls me to lower notes. Any advice will be of great use to me.

      I am far from professional singer yet I found helpful to have seperate techniques for seperate tones. And instead of trying to sing exactly like someone else, I'd start to tune up or down songs to my comfortable register which mostly solves the "I can't fry that high" problem. Cheers.
