I have one question about the finger and chest adjustment. You say start at posture and move till the finger is up. ? But I noticed you didn’t point straight up aswell. So is there a degree of angle in which I missed. What’s the “rule of thumb “for that brother ?

I've been trying to learn for (a few weeks shy of) a year now and I've been able to work with false cord screams, though I definitely could've used this video as few as 4 months back when I realized that the reason I was barely able to practice for an entire song was because I misunderstood how much force I needed to use. I think using the term "screaming" set me up for failure in my mind. I only yesterday found a video that helped me understand the technique for fry screaming - I had been making that creaking (I call it 'The Grudge noise') happen down closer to my chest. Someone here on TH-cam gave me a great visual of how to close off the vocal cords by pretending I'm lifting something heavy and then focusing on making The Grudge noise up closer to my sinus cavity, vibrating off the soft palate. I haven't yet been able to transition that into a scream yet but ...and here's the reason I'm telling you this... your video this morning has properly set me up for success in ensuring I control the air pressure rather than forcing it because I'm not getting the sound I want yet. So thank you so much. Also your JFAC cover from the other day was incredible.
Thank you so much! Glad you’ve found this helpful. We really appreciate the feedback. We do try to avoid the term “screaming” for that exact reason. A lot of the terms that are used for metal vocals are misleading and often do more harm than good. This is also why a lot of classical vocal coaches encourage their students to avoid this style, because they also associate it with actual screaming which is quite damaging for the vocal cords. Good luck with your practicing! 🤘

I'm very addicted to the vape and I'm working to quit it for good. After quitting I am going to have to retrain my voice to do the screams I seem to have lost...which seems to be the high screams only. Thank you so much for the video! I think my air control is decent for clean singing and fry scream but for false cords I’m not able to produce a powerful sound without letting the air come out at the same time which means I run out of breath after 3 words or so 😅 Do you have any idea what I could be doing wrong?
Well explained appoggio technique, usefull for all singing styles too, do you have a classic singing background? Either way great job, very thoughtfull aproach, ive been trying to improve my breathing, i have a tendency to take off like a rocket sometimes lol
Any tips or exercises to apply this more to screaming? How can I make them more tight/less airy, it seems the lighter I try to scream the more air it demands to make the noise
John Folts Guitar it’s all about finding balance. You want to find that sweet spot where you’re using the least amount of air with the maximum amount of output
This is by far the most interesting video I have seen about breathing. Being a programmer, I often have bad posture. I wish I took lessons with you a long time ago. I'm going to consider starting EVI now. Thing is, I'm not really a screamer so never considered EVI, I dabble with screams, but in essence I like to sing GNR/Accept/Maiden/Priest/Metallica/Pantera (ok.. those are screams). I definitely should consider it! One question, how does it combine with 'Appoggio', the classical support which is sometimes is explained as a slight push from the very bottom of your abdominals. Would you rule that out completely when you say that you never have to actually engage abs?
Try backing off on how hard you’re going! You may be working too hard! If that’s not it make sure you’re taking a nice big deep breath before so you’re not gassing out too quickly!
Can someone answer, how is this technique called? False chord sing? And does this envolve any bit of voca fry? Because I want to do it but I cant since when I go into high notes it sounds different, and starts to hurt.
i have the problem that i give to much power to create the sound i want but then run out of breath and get sore kinda quick. is there maybe any way/hint/trick to change that somehow? maybe it's just a mindest thing or something?
Is there a way to identify the ideal form of distortion for my vocals? Is it possible that I am not able to distort my vocals enough to use them for singing? I've tried many styles and so far it seems they all fry my chords.
My problem is that, i can breathe through the diaphragm and i can easily use the air with singing, but i for some reason can't use any air while screaming, i just scream with the vocal chords with 0 air :( can someone teach me how to use the air?
I enjoy watching your videos, but I still don’t understand how you can get powerful aggressive vocals without putting force into it. Surely if you don’t put force then your scream will be weak.
The biggest hurdle is changing your perception of what a scream is. Our brains associate “screaming” with the wailing we all did as children (and maybe still do occasionally). So much of vocalizing is mental and the process of getting out of your own way to allow the sounds to happen in a balanced way instead of punching your way into it and using excess air which will cause fatigue, lightheadedness and can lead to damage over time. Think about fullness of the sound instead of power and you’ll find you can actually get a more intense sound without force. If you haven’t checked out this video it may help you a bit! th-cam.com/video/0cxP1gt8Rx0/w-d-xo.html
Do you tuck your tummy slightly when “pushing” air out as if there’s a “belt” below the lower ribs? Or do you “push” down as if going number 2(...sorry no better analogy) I’m confused about this. Thank you if you can help out
@@ExtremeVocalInstitute thank you David! That’s what I’ve been doing, it’s just I see other singers do this thing with their belly like in this video: th-cam.com/video/y3xyp54bZqs/w-d-xo.html
Hey there, been following your tuts and they helped me get my low guturals out in 2 days. Question tho: is it normal to get an entire body goosebump and a light head dizziness after practicing for a while? I've been singing for almost 8 years now and never had this happen. Happens mostly when doing false chords.
What you’re experiencing is a mismanagement of air - either using too much or too little but either way what’s happening is you’re experiencing oxygen deprivation. If that happens, stop, scale back and think about how you’re going about producing the sound and try to balance your way into it differently
As someone with a career in human kinetics and anatomy, I can agree that you've hit the nail on the head with this video! Great work
Thanks so much!

Thanks a lot for the helpful tips. But how about breathing through youre diaphragm ?
Why i feel dizzy when I do these exercices? What am I doing wrong?
I'm just trying to sound like Brent Smith when I'm laying on my back watching utube before I go to sleep
❤❤❤
Is there a way to identify the ideal form of distortion for my vocals? Is it possible that I am not able to distort my vocals enough to use them for singing? I've tried many styles and so far it seems they all fry my chords.
My problem is that, i can breathe through the diaphragm and i can easily use the air with singing, but i for some reason can't use any air while screaming, i just scream with the vocal chords with 0 air :( can someone teach me how to use the air?
🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you if you can help out
Make a hissing sound like shown in this video. The sensation you feel when doing that is the exact sensation you want when vocalizing!
@@ExtremeVocalInstitute thank you David! That’s what I’ve been doing, it’s just I see other singers do this thing with their belly like in this video:

2:47 I realized my posture is way wrong
Hey there, been following your tuts and they helped me get my low guturals out in 2 days. Question tho: is it normal to get an entire body goosebump and a light head dizziness after practicing for a while? I've been singing for almost 8 years now and never had this happen. Happens mostly when doing false chords.
What you’re experiencing is a mismanagement of air - either using too much or too little but either way what’s happening is you’re experiencing oxygen deprivation. If that happens, stop, scale back and think about how you’re going about producing the sound and try to balance your way into it differently
