How To Fry Scream | Metalcore Tutorial

- How to scream is a common question I get asked by many people attempting vocals in the metalcore, deathcore, hardcore, deathmetal and djent sound. So in today's vocal screaming tutorial I'll be showing you my tips and technique on how I fry scream safely, avoiding damage, things to look out for, types of metal vocals, and other great information that I've learned in the past 19 years of doing vocals.
I am Brendon Padjasek of the band Structures and I also played in Northlane for 2 years on the Alien cycle before taking a step back to work from home. Welcome to my channel based on modern metal, djent, and deathcore music, production, mixing and song writing.
In this lesson I'll show you how I haven't killed my vocal chords after almost 20 years of screaming style vocals. A lot of information I learned from my vocal coach / instructor, as well as things I've picked up along the way. Grab some water and try somethings out with me. Thanks!

Me, on a random Tuesday at 11 am: Trying to learn how to scream lol
Hahah hopefully it helped
Thanks for checking it out
Nah cause fr (but it’s Saturday)
Bro I found this comment @11:17 but its sunday
Sunday 10:33 night 😅
My co-workers are very confused at the moment
Hahahaha they’ll understand one day
"Take a break if youre voice starts to feel fried" no pun intended
Hahaha I didn’t even realize that. Good ear haha
Well im sat here and im sure my neighbours think im possessed
Hahaha as long as they don’t call the cops, you’re good
I am an opera singer. My son plays metal core drums (omg what a family!). Thanks for this excellent explanation.
Haha that’s amazing. Never a dull moment. You gotta make a song together lol
Symphonic metalcore album when?
can i get your sons instagram?

So… You’re Elizabeth and Will?
I get up at 330am with a 1 hour drive into work, so i already feel like screaming. This will definitely help, awesome video with good info.
Hahahaha I love that! Thanks Kevin! I’m glad it’s helpful
Car is a great place to practice Hahaha
@ribeiropk I agree with this haha
Me watching this simply because I don't want to sound like a strangled chicken while singing along to my tunes
Well said man. A lot of "how to scream" videos on youtube easily end up coming across as confusing, but I think you did well to keep it as simple and relatable as possible. Would love to hear that continue into the pitched screaming topic.
Thanks a lot for watching Dylan! Definitely have some extra things to mention in the pitched screaming one based on everyone’s questions. Glad that I didn’t film them in the same day
Are there any topics you’d like me to elaborate on in the next videos?
This helped a lot with finding comfort in my own sound. Love that you spoke about how unique vocals can really set a band apart from the rest
Thank you so much. I love doing these TH-cam videos and seeing how some people find them useful and others don’t haha. Glad to help those that I can
3:16 this is so funny for no reason lol
Lmfao absolutely. The classical music definitely helps lmao
Meme culture, classical music followed by weird faces.
If only my walls weren't paper thin I would have loved to learn screaming vocals ! As always, great video with valuable advices :)
Dude thank you so much for checking it out. That is very much so the unfortunate reality for a lot of people. Will have to wait until people are out of the house/ apartment or even try the technique into a pillow haha.
Hope to hear Eric’s vocals on the new jams soon
Hahaha damn that sucks man. I feel very lucky to have had semi soundproof room. And back in the days of actually writing songs in a room, had plenty of time to get loud. The cup thing is interesting tho.
How far do you need to have it placed v
I agree that’s it’s vert soul crushing. I guess the best options is renting an hour at a rehearsal space
Same!! I screamed at 12:00 AM when I thought that everyone must be in deep sleep and I screamed the hell out and my uncle came to my study room (where I do my studies and singing) and asked "Is everything all right?" I said "Yeah yeah I was just practicing screaming". I felt so guilty.
@TTD-rocks999 hahahaha that’s definitely the hardest part. Finding the time and place to practice
I started playing in a hardcore/metal band (although today this would surely be called metal core lol but we never used that term at the time) around 2000/2001, and I had a hell of a time figuring out how to do this right. For the first year or so my technique was terrible and I would push too hard and blow out my voice. After seeing various bands live and studying the singers I started ti notice the way the singers often were screaming without looking like they were straining and about to blow an artery or something, and eventually figured out the correct technique, or something close to it. I stopped playing metal for the most part soon after, by taking too much acid one night and discovering the Grateful Dead (I’m serious-sorry everyone), but I still love metal, especially been going back to it in recent years, but god damn I wish I would’ve had a video like this back then. Great explanation!
Hahahah thanks for sharing your experience. Especially the grateful dead one!
That thumbnail goes HARD ⚰️
I love what you do man, how you give credit and not have an ego about it. that’s strength.
Thank you! It’s definitely important to give credit where it’s due and also be realistic and self aware haha
You seem like such a kind, friendly person, i really enjoyed this video :)
Def want a pitched screaming vid. This is sick
Amazing. Thank you for watching. Seems like a lot of people want a pitch screaming tutorial as well

CJ Mcmahon is one of if not my favorite vocalist because he's so damn good at mixing his actual voice in with the more monster sounding vocals. It's something I dream of.
He’s definitely got a monstrous voice
I've been trying to scream for a year but this video change everything i did it first try. even warm ups are amazingly helped my voice control
Eh thanks so much! Super glad it helps. Also Chris Liepe has a few great videos more in depth on the warm ups a swell
well explained and super helpful, thanks!
Thanks for checking it out!
dude, thank you so much, seriously - i have a year of experience fry screaming and i've been playing with a band almost that whole time and this video has helped me take the power and aggression of my screams to the next level. the tip about not holding back is also extremely helpful, cause i've tried doing that at shows to make my voice last longer but it just ended up making my throat feel scratchy.
Thanks so much for watching and I’m stoked it helped ! I also noticed that for myself as well. And it’s weird because it seems obvious to hold back to preserve but it ends up hurting more. Obviously don’t overly push to be obnoxious, but once you find that perfect pocket. You’re good.
Awesome video! Love the simple explanation and hearing the different scream types
Thanks Gary! I know you play guitar, but do you do vocals as well?
@@BrendonKPadjasek I do cleans, but my goal for 2024 is branching out into more screams.

I really dig the way you use your distortion. This video was very helpful and you should definitely do that pitch screaming tutorial.
I appreciate that! I definitely am considering it because there are some out there but I feel like they’re missing some information that I found extremely helpful. What kind of vocals do you do?
@@BrendonKPadjasek right now I do false chord. I'm trying to learn how to fry scream and incorporate more of my true voice intoy screams
I never learned false chord and I might look into it in the future. What are some of your favourite vocalists?
@@BrendonKPadjasek It's honestly what I found easier to start with. Originally I was trying to aim for the screaming style Adrian from Northlane used to do but I just didn't know enough about screaming at the time. My favorite vocalist are Adrian fitipaldes, Ryo kinoshita, and Brian Willie
Oh yeah I think Adrian does a similar thing to what I’m doing from touring with him years ago. At least I think so. Not sure what Ryo is doing but he’s a beast and killed it every day on those tours we did
I've only been into metal for just under a year, but I'm so into it now. I went to Northlane's concert in Melbourne in Feb of this year and I was blown away - I just loved the energy of the crowd. I was just outside of the mosh-circle radius, so I got collided int oa bit, but I didn't care at all. I used to dedicate my singing to mostly classical techniques, but now I'm really determined to get into this hardcore style. I love all these insturction videos, so.... thank you. Thank you very much.
Thank you ❤❤❤
Thank you and good luck!
Nice work, bro! Cheers from Brazil 🇧🇷
Thank you my friend! Glad it was useful!
Great video, thanks for all the tips ! I'm screaming for a while now but I've been kinda confused lately with my voice so any advice is really great and I love the way you scream !
Hey, thanks for checking it out! there are quite a few techniques out there. What are you looking to achieve with your vocals?
@@BrendonKPadjasek You're welcome, your content is really interesting wether it's songwriting or mixing too !
With vocals I mainly try not hurting myself for now. In fact I still haven't found any warmup routine that works for me. Every time I try a warmup found on TH-cam and scream after, my voice is already fucked up in half a verse and I have massive headache. It's frustrating and I end up not working because I'm afraid of hurting myself. Because for the screaming part, I use to know what I wanted to do, well it worked at least, or I thought it worked.
Hey I appreciate all the kind words. Thank you!
And interesting. Where is a lot of your scream coming from in your body?
I love the information you give. 20 years of doing vocals myself only I'm all self taught so I have a hard time explaining some of what I'm doing especially my crazy highs and I'm constantly being asked for tutorials on them lol.
Yeah it’s so weird when you have to break it down into words. Thanks so much !
@BrendonKPadjasek np man! I'll be sure to check out more of your content. If you ever have the chance too I recommend taking a look at one of my black dahlia covers. Or anything of mine really.
I love the video it’s amazing
Thank you so much! Glad it was helpful
Awsome!
Thanks David!
I didn't expect the vocalist for a pretty heavy band to be such a chill and down to earth dude haha, I was also aware of structures long before seeing this, so awesome :) this was really helpful
Eh thanks so much! Yeah I’m just a normal guy that is fortunate to do what he loves for a living. No reason to not be kinda and helpful haha
Great video
Thank you my friend!
Great information and tips! Wish I saw this a year ago when it was first posted.. I'll be checking you out more!
Eh thanks so much! I plan to make a few more videos soon
I was listening to structures since high school and didn’t listen to you guys in a while. I’m now in my twenties. I randomly stumped upon this video and had no idea you were from structures until you said so. The way my eyes lit up at this full circle moment.
ehh thanks for the continued support! Means a lot!

Awesome!!!

Thank you! I'm hoping this will help me sing along better with Chris and Lane.🤘😆🤘
Yeah they’re great. Thanks!
This is great advice! I noticed tho that this video is recorded at home, a great place to practice screaming surely, however I encourage you, and everyone else, to practice their screaming techniques wherever they go. I used to practice as an inventory sales associate, they loved hearing me randomly belt out a good high pitch growlscream while counting the shelves!
Hahaha as long. As you don’t get fired, and feel comfortable, I say go for it. If you’re holding back or self conscious, definitely more likely to hurt yourself
This is the video that confirms that i am doing it right. Thanks a lot!
Stoked to hear that! As long as it doesn’t hurt and you’re getting the tone, you’re doing good in my books
@@BrendonKPadjasek not hurting at all! Just some fatigue if i don't warmup properly or if I "push" to much since it's not that long that i learned doing it! within some time i will be able to record something i guess!
@drspody awesome. I hope it goes well!
I just unlocked a new region of voice thanks to you :)
I’m so glad! Thank you! And always remember, if it feels like you’re doing damage, take a step back
Thanks for mentioning the sweating part, 'cause I was wondering if it's only me :D
lol no I think it definitely happens to us all. I know a lot of engineers purposely make the recording room a bit warmer to loosen up the vocal chords as well
Man, to this day Earth Gazer is still one of my favourite songs and you're one of my top vocalists thanks to that track.
So glad I found this video on my recomendations
Thank you my friend! I loved that album even though most people hated it when. It came out haha. Or at least the internet would make you think so

I've always enjoyed singing along to Linkin Park and 30STM, but could never hit those crazy-scream notes, this is gonna be immensely helpful, thank you!
Hey thank you so much! I’ve always loved Chester’s voice as well. I believe he’s laying back on the pushing side of things so take it easy at first and find your comfortable spot. I know he’s able to hold some screams out for crazy long so it’s all about finding the right compression

Such a useful video! I would love to see more vocal related stuff. And i was wondering, what is the best way to go from "distorted" voice to clean round robin. Thank you for your content, it really makes people better musicians!
Hey thank you so much, I appreciate that a lot and I’m glad it’s super useful. To be honest, I don’t really do much cleans at all anymore, but at a point when I was trying I found that it was mostly just easing up in the compression from your chest and kind of shifting the momentum from your chest, to your abdominal/ diagram slightly more. Hope that makes sense
@@BrendonKPadjasek Yes, thank you very much 🙂

Also i stil cant believe that structures made a comeback(?) New album is awesome, i wish there will be a sequel 🙂
Haha thank you for checkout the newest ep! You’ll have to keep your ears and eyes peeled haha
And to think any human being would be screaming like that or better, when being tortured or sent to the slaughter house. Classy. Brutal. Takes seconds! Great instructional vid my man + new sub, been having a hard time pulling out my fried exhaled scream after so many years with perfecting inhales. Little did I know that wasn't that necessary. Oh well, YOLO to my teen years!
Hahahaha thanks for checking it out!
I would add that this technique is usual referred to as a fry scream. The other one mentioned typically used in the death side of the core/metal genre is typically called false chord.
The fry’s you use are definitely mixed in with a lot of natural voice but it doesn’t necessarily need to be this way.
Using more compression with a fry scream can lead to some pretty sweet tones for all sides of metal.
I absolutely agree with you on all of what you said. The draw back to introducing more compression with a fry scream is that you lose a bit more of the person’s individual sound. And then you end up sounding like the large majority of vocalist that sound quite similar - indistinguishable.
That’s why I titled the video as such, as I’m trying help people find their individual approach.
Thanks for watching and for commenting the things I didn’t mention in the video. Appreciate it!
What kind of vocals do you do?
This is perfect. I'm going to practice and see if I can do it. By the way, I've watched a lot of Chris Liepe videos - it's nice to see him being quoted.
Oh yeah Chris is great. Love his approach and explanations
Thank you. Hope it works out, just be sure to take it slow and if you feel strain , go a bit softer and take the steps in parts
I learned from loosing my voice every few days at band practice 20 years ago. Literally no one showed me anything, just screamed at the top of my lungs for hr’s…it took a few years before I could fully control all diff styles of distorted vocals. Now 20 years on I can do any style with zero damage...My normal voice is also fine btw ..it is amazing how much damage it can heal from. I do feel like learning at low volume then getting louder later would be safer for people. After all these years I would say learning Volume/breath control is the most important thing.
Absolutely agree about the volume / breath control aspect.
Glad it's healed up ahah
That sorta voice cracking hollering thing that happened on his lower scream to the end is what made it click for me a while back.
It's that sorta rasp that appears when your voice is breaking between head voice and chest voice. If anyone is having trouble after watching this tutorial try ramping up like he does but when your voice breaks into head voice try going back and forth, and letting yourself yodel.
100% Thanks!
Thanks please provide more insight. I’ve wanted to learn this stuff forever. I’m 41, started with Metallica and deftones back in the day, and I’ve enjoyed the ride to the current metal scene. Hahahaha did they call because of the noise or because they were worried?
Sounds like you did it right and they need a mind they're a business lol
@derrickcook1824 I agree haha
I sing a lot at my work as a daycare teacher, and I find that my voice strains throughout the day. So, im definitely going to try these exercises to see if they help.
Oh they should definitely help with removing strain especially for actual singing. My vocal instructor was an amazing vocalist and I can definitely say my projection improved drastically using these techniques.

Nate Barcalow from Finch is my inspiration to nail a good scream some day 😭 his vocals are amazing
Oh yeah I grew up listening to finch
He even talks in vocal fry.
I do! Hahaha. I’m thinking of going to another vocal coach to work on that
this video only makes sense if you know how to fry scream to begin with. I can't get the "chest" distortion at all. if i push like you said my voice breaks. I have been a singer for 17+ years in semi pro band, but never managed to figure out fry scream
That would be the point where you reach the scream, where your voice breaks. As long as it’s not hurting your throat, your golden
Yeah! Screaming is basically using your break in a safe way. That’s why it feels so silly at the beginning. But it shouldn’t hurt.
@adrienrequin5632 exactly
took me a bit but thanks haha
Haha thanks!
> Don't feel self-concious, don't hold back
Well, I guess another time...
Hahah that’s okay. I’m in the works of another technique as well so stay tuned
Gotta love a versatile guitarist though
Thank you so much. I also play drums lmao
This is an awesome tutorial for someone who's never taken vocal lessons. Even though I don't plan on screaming, I found that I couldn't get the distortion to come from my chest and end up feeling it in my throat. Any tips for getting it to come from the right place?
I do plan on making another video on it. I guess I am technically closing my throat a little bit to get the last bit of distortion out. I just thought if I said “tighten your throat a little bit” people would more likely hurt themselves by using it way too much
