These older merc v8's sound much nicer than the higher revving new merc v8's. The newer ones are still lovely don't get me wrong but the ones from this era god dayum 🙏😍
one of the best V8s out there. Jeremy clarkson had one and he said about his SL55amg, that the sound is so low his dogs whimpered when he came home. But a beautiful engine. I would drive this is comfort all day to get the best low v8 rumble.
A proper machine. Nice real sound not those stupid fake bangs and crackles. 5 long gears not those stuuuuuuuupid 8/9 speed gearboxes, that change gear every second (and never go to top gear). 17 years old looks and drives like new. Old cars were better....
I agree with the fake sounds and such but this car sadly has many faults, the automatic roof for example and many more technical things sadly ruin my perspective of this beautiful car.
@JAYDOB Oh exactly, that's also a big issue in many of the sl's. We got to test drive around 4 since we were looking for a new car earlier this year and literally every single one of them had some sort of problem.
@@sp7873 We were at 3 different "sl specialists" none of the cars were above 45000 km. One didnt really close the roof and it started clacking by the motor not recognizing it and constantly repeating the close process. Another one didnt want to go into gear, one already had roof problems to start with, it just keeps going on.
@@sp7873 Yeah youre probably right. If they have no problems at higher mileages it means those may have been already sorted out, while a low mileage car, even when in good shape, still has the common problems that can occur eventually
i've loved this sl ever since it came out and remember it being used as a safety car in f1. pls correct me if i'm wrong:) i was 16. after i eventually drove the 350, i permanently fell in love. still love the look and the performance. i'm aware of owning and repairing costs, but i'd get one :) hell, i'd go crazy driving this one, that diff... crazy old skool tune :)

I have bought one a few weeks ago 😃👍 Original 90000km with seamless service history in designo Alanitgrün 008 with panoramic glass roof. It's initial registration 2003 was in the Netherlands until 2019 the car came to Germany
R230 SL55 did not have a stock limited differential. This was available as partnof the „perfomance package“, which again was an option available starting 2004. Also I doubt, that the vehicle tested is after the first facelift (476->500hp). Because the after facelift/500hp engines always wear a badge of the mechanic crafting the engine. The tested car doesn‘t have such a badge. However, even the pre-facelift cars had real world performance figures spreading upscale, which is why 511hp could be a realistic value even for a 476hp car.
Even the stock one when it came out was amazing for acceleration, for those days. I had an even older C43 and was jealous. Kleemann were a good tuner, not sure if they are still going in Denmark? They did a supercharger version for the C43 as well.

@AutoTopNL Not quite right that it was upgraded to 500hp on 2003, there was never no upgrade on the engine. Thing is sl55 needed to be 500 and e55 less, only on paper, engines were exactly the same. Also this upgrade (on paper) you talk was on May 2002
And this is what you can’t get for under 20.000€. But no, young people buy these GTI and Cupras instead because they have all this bling bling and displays... let’s be honest a E55 or CLS55 or SL55 will easily eat any modern sports car alive. You nearly have no competition with these cars.
Truth be told truth be told..I have an 06 cls55 amg, she’s at500hp 516 ftlbs of torque....not many cars can run me and this is 2020.. and these motors are rated up to 750 hp,....spend a little more money and I’m for certain damn near unbeatable.
@@unkameatgoodbar2315 My friend used to own an E55 and he said no C63 or E63 could ever beat him. He said a new Bi-Turbo C63 with a tune was actually faster than him though. But still that’s a 40-50.000€ price difference between those cars lol.

My 320 straight six R129 I love. The SL 73 was frickin epic, you could balance a 50p on the engine when on idle.

I own this car stock. 500ps, 0-100 4.4seconds, 0-200, 14.5seconds and it's 18 years old!
With the SL 55 AMG you can go 315 km/h with top down - it's windy, but not bad. Don't ask me how I now that :)

The m113k is the most reliable amg engine but still not free of flaws
Had mine a while,valve cover gaskets need to be replaced...typical wear and tear, but that motor is very reliable....no problems with my cls55.
