Boost is essentially a multiplier of what you already have in terms of power. However, if I had to choose one over the other, I would pick forced air. I would probably go with the Edelbrock E-force. With a cam there are several things that you give up. Most cams will offer midrange and top end power while sacrificing some power down low. Fuel economy will suffer some. An R/T with the stock cam will get 26 to 28 mpg on the highway. A performance cam will lower that number to about 20. Fuel economy becomes a bigger deal if the car is used as a daily driver. Some people like the lope from a bigger cam while others don't. If I were to own an R/T, I would most likely go with forced air, change the rear end to a 3.09 limited slip differential, and delete the mid muffler. At some point the car will have to be sold because nothing lasts forever. The limited slip diff becomes a strong selling point and eliminating the mid muffler isn't a big deal one way or the other. To sell the car you get the car back to stock. This will increase the value of the car. The supercharger can be sold separately. As for me, I wouldn't invest too much money in an R/T. The gains for the money spent isn't worth it to me. Owing the R/T would be an intermediate step for me. I would save my money and later upgrade to a higher trim level.

Great video. I'd say the cam is worth it if you have a good tuner behind you. I've seen 5.7s make 350 wheel with a cam and 450 wheel. All depends on the rest of your mods and your tuner's familiarity
What people don't realize is the peek whp doesn't tell the whole story on the performance increase. When you line up vs a stock car you blow them out because of the HP/torque gains throughout the RPM range.
Am glad I'm a retired mechanic with 35+ years in the business, these gen 3 hemis can be a pain to work on but are not that difficult at all. I'll agree that headers suck to install on these cars! I've pulled some noticeably good numbers out of my '14 300C hemi just doing all bolt-on aftermarket mods and a good 91 octane tune(we don't have 93 out west here)& MDS delete, faster than my '12 Challenger with all its mods now!
It's certainly a time consuming job (cam/headers). The combo of both really make a massive difference though. I just don't think it's worth supercharger $$$.
Great Vid! I’ve done all the bolt ons to my 5.7 now either go cam or boost. He’s right finding a shop to work on chargers is hard they all want to talk you out of it or over charge because they don’t want to touch it

I’m still stock where horsepower is concerned, but I added a slick and got 12.93s and 4.5 0-60 mph with not ideal conditions. I stand by that the best mod for these cars is a good tire👍🏻 after you get a good tire then start adding power💪

Curious cause I hear about that TB alot. What would you say is the difference between the Fastman and say the BBK 85 I have? Someone has one that I could gwt probably for free so just seeing if I should get and swap it out.
I m talking to the main person of RT life. I love your channel and watch it a lot. My question is I have a 2013 charger RT. I’m going to make it a SRT8 clone I guess people in the Dodge community will look down on me for put a SRT8 badge on it when I get done. What do you think. And yes I will tell people it is not a real SRT8. I myself think the car runs great like it is. I have had 2 back surgeries and can’t work on cars like I did about 5 years ago. So adding wheels a different hood wood be all I could do. Again keep up the great work with the channel.
I would make it look identical to an SRT & de-badge it Or just have hemi on the sides. The 2011-2014 SRT's look great - that's what I originally wanted.
Hell why not go both? We all know when we start modding, we always want more. Owning a cammed R/T is one of the best decisions I ever made, but now I’m preparing it for a 392 or 397 stroker and ported heads. Once that’s done, boost is coming
That's the dream man. Cammed/Supercharged V8 Hemi. Most people it comes down to $$$. Starts getting pricey so they choose one or the other. Sounds like you have a nice build going on.
@@RTLife aye man the aftermarket business messed up when they allowed us to finance parts! Get all your parts you want and pay later. Mines is pretty similar to yours, except I just have a full Corsa Extreme catless exhaust, headers to axlebacks, ported 90mm tb, Comp 270 cam kit and a tune. Plan to stroke and port later on this year.
I found a great performance shop in Clementon NJ...Kaspers Auto. Started doing small work on my Challenger 20 T/A. I keep watching to see what direction I want to go.
The JBA shortys combined with the JBA high flow catted mid-pipes have long tube-like behavior. But, the grunt still comes in early in the Rev range. It's hard to find a shop that will not charge you an arm and an eye for a cam job. Especially if you're in a location where hemi mechanics are not widely accessible. I live in Western New York. Straight up LS country out here. Hemi power is the red headed stepchild in my region.
Makes modding almost impossible after bolt-ons. I don't trust many shops to work on my RT. Key is finding a spot you can trust & they charge an honest price.
I had this same issue with my old 5.7 and some damn shorty headers. After I finally pulled the trigger and bought them, its was damn near impossible to find a shop that would install them. Played a big game of "I don't dodges, but my buddy over yonder does". Call the buddy, and get the same message, it was insane. And any shops I did find were often hours away and over-the-phone quotes started at $2000, for some shorty headers to be installed lol. Never did get them put on before the wreck, so if any 5.7 owner needs some BBK shorty headers for their challenger, still in the box, hmu.
hey I need help. hopefully you read this. I have a option to get 6.4 intake manifold and 6.4 exhaust manifold and midpipes. or just cam and straight pipe. I'm looking for low end power some growl. wanted to budget at $2000 but if those mods are a wait I rather save $5000 more grand and do the best mods possible.
@@peazy85 the 6.4 stuff you are looking at will give you some power, and that's across the entire power curve, but not as much sound as a cam and straight pipe. The cam will definitely add power, may lose a little down low depending on the grind of the cam, and is where you get the chop sound you hear in a lot of cars on TH-cam.
In my case, I got it cammed (Comp Cams 274 cam), Long Tubes and a 180 degree stat and tuned. 434 WHP, this year, I am getting a stall converter, 1 piece drive shaft, larger cat pipes, am oem HELLCAT cat back, a differential brace and for a little more "kick in the pants" a Whipple Stage 2 2.9L For my Challenger R/T. The car is at the shop as we speak.
The problem with the stroker 5.7s is the reving. You either stroke it out and lose your high reving ability or you stroke it and put boost into it. If you know how to do work it is mostly easy. It does require some know how. Headers are one of the easier things to install it just requires patience and working through little issues. That is all that modding a car is either way.
I'm gonna try that route to after seeing the numbers that the ProFlex E85 commander did for my buddies Challenger Scat Pack I ordered the kit today and some bigger injectors. I will have to see after I hook it up to see what it does.
5.7 is more enjoyable to mod because Bolt-ons have a better net gain. With a 392 you have great pieces in place already - so if you start modding, you're going to spend big $$$. Stroker kit, Cam, forged internals, forced air etc. Most don't bother with bolt-ons.
I raced a tune stinger at the track last Saturday I'm a no tune stock 5.7 challenger I run pretty good though 13.01 he ran 12.4 I was impressed I gave him a fist bump I'm still mopar no car
I had got price of $875.00 to do headers on my Challenger. And was told not worth doing shorty. The shop try talking me into LT headers with a cam for $6800 . Then went to Roger and had them done . Headers installed for $800 including the price of the headers . And I have the same exhaust .
I paid 1800 for the cam and 900 on the install. 300 for the tune of the cam. 3000 total. I need some rolling footage. What's your week looking like? I found a dyno place too.
In my opinion start from the back of the car and work you’re way to the front diff driveshaft tranny converter forged internals ported heads cam full bolt on e85 then slap a super charger or a turbo set up and turn up the boost cause take it from someone with experience you will always want more power and if u slap a supercharger u end up working backwards but that just my opinion unless u can contain Youreself at a safe 6-7 pounds of boost and not want any more again no hate just my opinion
I def understand what you mean. it really all comes down to $$$. Most of us want to do it the right way - but the $$$ limits what we can actually do. But, you are correct in the right way to build up a ride.

What do you think about that and who would you suggest i have email tune it as im from Portland OR area and post shops won't tune a hemi. Thank you.
I’m also looking to got his route. But with a long tube headers. Do you need a torque converter when you install a cam to get the car running properly?
I have a 2005 5.7L Dodge Ram 1500 and I am looking for a mechanic to stroke it to a 6.4L and cam it too here in Washington state, information is helpful near the Tacoma area.
Sounds nice, what’s the expected horsepower now, did it get dyno, do you know? I have a 2013 rt I’m going to do this too in a couple years, curious what I should expect?
If performance pages are accurate the best 1/4 mile this car got before the Cam and when tires were new was 12.6 @104 like I said that was cold morning on way to work and that's what Performace pages said not actual track. Now my problem is getting traction.
I don’t have the performance pages on mine, I need to get the tazr, I do have a AWD tho, so after a cam and headers a tune and a few other things, should get some good horsepower
@@chrisb2543 I think so. Cam and headers usually go together. I will say long tube would be better if you do get the headers. That was what I wanted originally but I couldn't find anyone who would do them for me. They would only attempt the shorty headers. I'm gonna keep my eye out for a set of long tubes. If I can find a cheap pair used or new I will grab them.

100% don’t see a cammed 5.7 as worth it. With the amount that it ends up costing including labor, you could just wait a little longer for the savings to catch up and go with boost. I’ve ran a few cammed 5.7’s in my 14 S197 5.0 with bolt ons and the 5.0 still pulls by at least 2 plus car lengths. Boost is the better alternative for 5.7’s.
I made them myself. I think I got them on Ebay for the pair $75-$80. Only thing was they said 392 hemi on them. Took a air grinder and shaved off the 392 part then painted black and bought the 345 hemi badges on eBay for couple bucks and glued on. Didn't have $300+ to get them already done like that lol.
I would agree with RT LIFE. You can get the basic 93 tune that will open stuff up. Plus when you start adding other things CAI, headers or whatever you get you then can choose a Tuner who will Tune the car to maximize the power for whatever you add.
Man, as much as I love my 300 I just can’t justify the cost to mod it compared to the gains. I can make 500whp in my Camaro for less than it costs to barely reach 400 with my 5.7 😢

@@brianschargerrt9416 trust me its complicated. But if you need help, i might be able to give some pointers if needed
Cam, comvertor, full exhaust, tune....5.7s rock👍
That's a solid list - converter really gets the hemi moving off the line
@@RTLife hear that, the shorty JBA's on my 300C sure woke it up, and are 50 state smog legal as well!

@Eddie Serrano Yeah , that's crazy, I'd just take the 4k and put it down on a Scat pack .
Great Vid! I’ve done all the bolt ons to my 5.7 now either go cam or boost. He’s right finding a shop to work on chargers is hard they all want to talk you out of it or over charge because they don’t want to touch it
crazy right?! Here in NY there are plenty of shops that will do it, hard to find one though that isn't looking to clean out your savings account. If you're spending over $4k I don't think it's worth it.
I’m still stock where horsepower is concerned, but I added a slick and got 12.93s and 4.5 0-60 mph with not ideal conditions. I stand by that the best mod for these cars is a good tire👍🏻 after you get a good tire then start adding power💪

I'm an engine development technician and also a greaser from Detroit. I never throw parts in (install them). Bolt on a blower with out touching the engine to me is just gambling. Also hiring someone to doing it for me is missing 1/2 of the fun. But I'm old and people are different to day.
The fastman throttle body is where it's at!...that's what I'm getting when I get a tb for my 5.7
yah I've heard that's a great upgrade
Same route I'm going.. once you forge the bottom end you'll be able to handle more power.. might do e85 as well
That's the dream man. Cammed/Supercharged V8 Hemi. Most people it comes down to $$$. Starts getting pricey so they choose one or the other. Sounds like you have a nice build going on.

It's hard to find a shop that will not charge you an arm and an eye for a cam job. Especially if you're in a location where hemi mechanics are not widely accessible. I live in Western New York. Straight up LS country out here. Hemi power is the red headed stepchild in my region.

@@peazy85 the 6.4 stuff you are looking at will give you some power, and that's across the entire power curve, but not as much sound as a cam and straight pipe. The cam will definitely add power, may lose a little down low depending on the grind of the cam, and is where you get the chop sound you hear in a lot of cars on TH-cam.
ok last question what would you do
In my case, I got it cammed (Comp Cams 274 cam), Long Tubes and a 180 degree stat and tuned. 434 WHP, this year, I am getting a stall converter, 1 piece drive shaft, larger cat pipes, am oem HELLCAT cat back, a differential brace and for a little more "kick in the pants" a Whipple Stage 2 2.9L For my Challenger R/T.
I think he is sticking with the 5.7L - no stroker. But the cam he went with drives really smooth & sounds great.

I like how he said the 392 comes already built. I’ve been back and forth on if I want to mod and R/T or just start off with a 392.
5.7 is more enjoyable to mod because Bolt-ons have a better net gain. With a 392 you have great pieces in place already - so if you start modding, you're going to spend big $$$. Stroker kit, Cam, forged internals, forced air etc. Most don't bother with bolt-ons.
