      First gun I ever bought was a 1911a1 with a lock on the back strap of the pistol. It could be defeated by a couple of thumb tacks, a paper clip, a staple, or a bit from a $5 harbor freight "security" bit driver set. It was literally worse than useless, since it provided a false sense of security.

  • @floorpizza8074
    @floorpizza8074 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    Really enjoying your current gun lock series, LPL. I haven't ever bothered with individual gun locks; I have a very low quality gun safe that all of my guns (except my home defense weapons) are kept to keep them out of the reach of the neighborhood children. It certainly isn't any sort of effective theft protection, but it serves its purpose. I've always wondered exactly how much protection the locks that are included with new firearms provide (as well as the various after market solutions as shown in this video). My reloading room has a deadbolt lock on it, and the safe is inside the reloading room. Again, near zero theft protection, but it keeps the little ones out of harm's way.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Gun safes are the way to go. Some of the low quality ones can be slightly improved by upgrading the cam locks, or welding hasps to them and using a good padlock... but you really need to spend quite a bit before the safe is resistant to prying attacks, so replacing the locks will only get you so far.

    I have a feeling that most of these locks are probably purchased simply to satisfy the silly state requirement with no intention of them actually serving a security or maybe even a safety purpose. Is the law in Maryland such that this internal locking device only needs to be present at the time of sale or do you have to store that way too?
    My home state of Illinois also has a silly law about new guns being sold with locks. I have a bin of unused locks and my firearms are in safes. At least Maryland hasn't gotten so silly as to ban suppressors, like Illinois. Noticed that your .45s have thread protectors...

    • @lockpickinglawyer

    Would any of these "down the barrel" type of locks end up scratching the barrel, damaing the rifling or otherwise having a detrimental effect on the functioning of the firearm?
    Also, are all these guns your own personal ones?

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +296

      They can scratch the barrel, but most use materials that are softer than the barrel steel. The real issue in impacts on the crown of the barrel. That can seriously mess up accuracy. And yes, all the guns are mine.

    • @richardbadish6990
      @richardbadish6990 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Although it could still scratch it, it's not going to touch the rifling. Since the lock only is long enough to fill up the firing chamber. However, you scratch your firing chamber enough., you will fire form the case into the scratches. Therefore causing malfunctions, such as failure to eject and or stove piping. But if it was me, I'd never use it in just buy a safe. That's extra valuable seconds you could be wasting removing it.

    • @0neDoomedSpaceMarine
      @0neDoomedSpaceMarine 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They can very much scratch the crown on your gun, which is one reason I don't like them.
      Also, with a *1911,* inserting the lock as seen in the video, basically just dropping it into the chamber through the ejection port, then closing the action, is ill advised, as 1911 extractors don't like it when you snap it over the rim like that, it applies a bad leverage which can make the extractor break.
      This is 1911 'etiquette' in general though, you shouldn't do this with live cartridges or snapcaps either. Load only through the magazine.

    • @John_2143
      @John_2143 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You only need to keep guns locked up if someone under the age of 18 could easily access them.
      from Gifford's law center:
      Maryland law provides that a person “may not store or leave a loaded firearm in a location where the person knew or should have known that an unsupervised child would gain access to the firearm.” This section does not apply if:
      The child’s access is supervised by an individual age 18 or older;
      The child’s access was obtained as a result of unlawful entry;
      The firearm is in the possession or control of a law enforcement officer while the officer is engaged in official duties; or
      The child has a certificate of firearm and hunter safety.

    Living in Maryland I bought my first pistol (Ruger Security 9 Compact) a couple of years ago and bought this lock to go with it, because as you said, it was on the state police approved list. After trying it out a few times to see how quick I could "ready" the pistol, I finally gave up. I kept it as a lock for long-term storage, but I haven't actually used it since. Besides the challenge of actually removing it expediently, it still looks like the gun is loaded and ready. At least with a cable lock, you see the gun is locked open or something else is weird with it. Would not recommend.

    Loading a round like that can cause your extractor to fail. Especially for Glocks. Basically the extractor slams and catches the round, instead of being properly fed with a magazine and not slamming. Do it enough and you might find your extractor protruding and not working correctly. For M&P loading a round like this makes the gun fail often with no magazine in it. It will still work most the time, but its not good practice to do so.

    So they tried to be clever using the 'reverse torx', but instead made it basically a hex bolt that is super easy to open.
    An 'issue' which is known to pretty much everyone working with hex and torx screws - you can use the bits interchangeably most of the time.
    Had they used a regular security torx, at least you would need the specific security torx bit to open it, and not a bic pen :)
    Then again, if they actually cared about it, they would use a custom tamper proof screws like the Bryce Key-Rex.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A real security screw would have been helpful with defeating the improvised attacks, but it doesn't quite address the fact that this really isn't a "lock "as we understand them.

    • @JohnEdwa
      @JohnEdwa 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it really matter though? As you've shown, most of the locks can be picked in under a minute, so they don't really provide much more security. It's all about making it impossible to just grab the gun and shoot it immediately or by accident.
      I would see a real custom security screw to be *more* secure than most of the locks, at least you can't pick it, and they don't give you false sense of security that no-one can access the gun unless they get *your* key. You know anyone with the bit can open it, and will take more care of your gun.

Easy to remove without ANY tools. For a Glock, Just field strip the gun pop the barrel off then beat it out with a stick. For an M&P push up on the extractor to release the slide field strip the gun then remove the barrel and beat it out with a stick. Same procedure for removing stuck cases.

      ArmchairWarrior yes it is needed dumbass. Just look at Virginia right now. The governor proposes sending in the national guard to enforce gun laws in response to many police agencies declaring themselves sanctuaries. Also, guns are the best self defense tool there is. It allows an elderly woman to effectively defend herself from a 200 lbs attacker and so on. Also, there are on average 500,000 to 2 million (edit: its actually 3 million) defensive uses of guns a YEAR according to the CDC. The cdc states guns are use to deter or to stop crime more than they are used for crime in the US. And you also bluntly ignore the fact that over half of all gun deaths are suicides, i.e. those deaths are not gun violence. And that most gun homicides are gang related. Also, a lot of gun crime in general is concentrated in a few a major cities, like L.A. Detroit, St. Louis, and Chicago. It’s also funny that you ignore the fact that a lot of major cities with high crime rates happen to also have very strict gun control. It should also be noted that overall violent crime is declining. Gun murders are lower than they were in the 70s too. Also, quit being a disingenuous prick, why do murders via firearm matter so much specifically? You damn well know you can’t just look at one type of murder with one specific tool and just claim there is some problem. London has more stabbings than Chicago, but that doesn’t mean I need to tell people from England that they “need to join the rest of the first world countries” just because they have a high stabbing rate.

      @@C3Corvette1982 This is why the US needs decent gun laws. They pass a few sensible gun laws and what do the gun nuts do? Blatantly accept complete misinformation. Nobody is coming for your guns, jfc.
      And no, guns are no the best self defense tool. You're !!! 100 !!! times more likely to abuse a gun than to use it for self defense.
      And seriously, the 500k - 2M DGU a year myth? Still?! You're not even using the 3.5M it was later magically raised to by the gun nut community. This study was debunked back in the 90s, why are idiots still spewing this all over the internet?
      Here's were that number came from. Someone called a few random people in conservative areas in the US, a sample base of only 5000, and asked them if they owned a gun for self defense, that's it. That was the whole study. They then claimed owning a gun for self defense means 1 DGU a year, and extrapolated that to the 300+ million people that lived in the US at the time. It wasn't claimed by the CDC either.
      Also just think what that means. The US is by far the most violent developed country in the world, with the highest deaths and crime rates. What you're essentially suggesting is that there'd be at least twice as much crime and death than there already would be, if it wasn't for guns. Truly truly, what a f-in moron you must be to believe this.
      If guns are such great deterrents, the US aught to be a f-in utopia, not the violent shithole it is today... You truly are among the dumbest people in the developed world right now. Don't get depressed any time soon.

    Seems like the biggest advantage to this is that the gun, outwardly, does not appear locked. If the lock type weren't so common then that discretion would be a great advantage. As it stands, if so many people have them it's hardly useful, especially if every "key" works to every other lock.

  • @JimmyCraft
    @JimmyCraft 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I know this video is 2+ years old and I'm late to the party, but the bigger issue I have with a lock of this type is that you're required to stick something down the barrel of the gun to remove it. However, while it's installed, a user cannot check to ensure that there isn't a cartridge in the gun. What if you thought it was "locked", but actually all you had was a sticky (loaded) cartridge? This seems like a design flaw that makes it impossible to safely use this lock.

    • @ScottKenny1978
      @ScottKenny1978 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I'll give you an even bigger disappointment as far as Omega locks go, (I have several and in their way they are decent enough). The biggest problem with these lock is the gun immediately becomes something that if you hold it in the wrong area gets you shot double quick. At least a craptacular trigger lock gives the kid holding it half a chance to be noticed by a cop or permit holder before they shoot him/her. Also the revolver model uses a plastic that breaks down and fails when exposed to gun oil.
