    We the audience are learning 2 things with your 'gun lock' series. First, the manufacturers of gun locks focus more on the securing method than the actual lock they employ. They spend countless hours (no doubt) designing a system to incapacitate a firearm, but then just get the cheapest lock they can find to secure that system. The result is a gun lock with obvious shortcomings.
    The second thing we are learning is you have a nice collection of guns. Probably a understanding wife too.

      Thanks... as for the understanding of my wife, she grew up overseas in a war-torn region and has witnessed the atrocities that can result from a disarmed population. As such, she is quite supportive of my "other hobby." If there was any "understanding" required with this particular gun, it was with respect to the amount of time I put into it. After getting the proper approval and paying the applicable tax, I built it in my basement out of de-militarized parts and a homemade receiver. Building an AK (well) is quite time-consuming.

      I watched the video again. Nice work on the receiver. It doesn't look homemade (at least on this side).
      Given your wife's background, I'm sure she has an interesting opinion of our (the USA's) recent political strife from the last presidential election.
      Looking forward to the Ozlock picking.

    I think the red pins around the trigger DO have metal inside them, it's just that there's plastic over the tips so you can't see them. Try sawing one in half to see for sure.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +258

      I checked them with magnets.

    • @jaymassengill3340
      @jaymassengill3340 6 ปีที่แล้ว +92

      Don't most tungsten alloys range from just barely magnetic to almost completely non-magnetic?
      Even if the pins do contain some metal, I think the housing is too fragile.
      Depending on the construction of the gun, I have used padlocks with shackles large enough to completely fill the space behind the trigger. So for example, an AR with a completely enclosed trigger guard could have some extra security added with a thick-shackle padlock. But one with a hinged winter trigger guard would not be a candidate for this. Sure, even a solid trigger guard's aluminum could be easily cut with a hacksaw but then you're getting into destructive attacks which could defeat most any lock if causing some damage to the gun is not an issue.

      @Cheesus-Sliced 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@johnfrancisdoe1563 well yea, thats the whole point at the end of the day. Keep the childrens wandering fingers off the boom stick. I'm just saying before stating they are only rubber they should probably be cut because even magnet tests can be unreliable to check for metal (see stainless steel, tungsten carbide, aluminium, etc).

    Guns locks are easy to get in. As a novice picker with no real skill i easily raked into one of my triggers locks. I believe the main point of these locks is to prevent accidental use or someone from being able to immediately access the weapon without authorization and in that they do their job.

    • @h.1699
      @h.1699 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Deon Denis yes but you'd have to do some work and most people are too lazy to do it, buying a crappy trigger lock is so much less work and thinking. Heck there are still thousands of guns laying around households completely unguarded, there are even idiots sleeping with loaded firearms in their bed.

    In this lock's defense, it's called the child guard, I think it's only meant to stop young kids from grabbing it and pulling the trigger. It's not really meant to secure it against thieves or attackers. At least that's the impression I get, I could be wrong.

    The best child lock is to INCLUDE your child when you go to the range. My dad did. He let me see and hold the guns when they went off.
    I KNEW what kind of power they had because I felt and heard it. It also showed me it wasn’t a toy, because I saw what the bullet did to the targets. I had a friend over when I was 10. He wanted me to open the RFID lockbox with a Glock 22. Because it would be “cool”. Sigh. I wish his parents did the same for him as mine did for me.

    Those metal rods are almost certainly not tungsten carbide, a quick test with a magnet would settle the question though, because tungsten is not magnetic. Tungsten is also very heavy compared to the same size steel part. Tungsten is a brittle metal that's not much good for structural parts. Where it works well is in drill or cut resistant plates because it's much harder than most drill bits, or hacksaw and file teeth.
    I assume the rods that are supposed to be in the plastic pins are the part where the tungsten is supposed to be. At least that would make the pins hard to cut with something like wire cutters, though in something like this with a plastic body it's had to see that making much difference.

    Because of the relative ease of defeating many of the weapon security systems out there, I find that using a combination of devices gives me the best security when I do not have direct control of my firearms. I use a cable lock on each weapon, each weapon is stored in a security cabinet which I have fitted into a closet lined with several layers of sheet-rock for fire protection, a steel security cable runs through the back wall of the closet into the back of the cabinet and through each firearm and is secured with a padlock, the security cabinet door has a standard lock but the closet door was replaced with a steel fire door I bought for a really low price at auction, and of course a home security system by a major provider secures the room and, indeed, the rest of the house. I did all this a little bit at a time over the course of several months and I am very pleased with the results. The cabinet is bolted to the concrete basement floor and is far more secure now than firearms safe and hundreds of dollars less expensive. I have less than $300 in this setup, excluding the monitored security system.

From here, it looks like cheap ol ABS plastic but the markings would tell us if it was more robust plastic like glass reinforced nylon, etc would tell us if the plastic would be more shock resistant or just cheap plastic you cold destroy with a simple hammer.

    You know LPL, there's another way to avoid it being fired. It's the safety lever....which you don't have properly set......

    The tungsten carbide rods are meant to prevent this lock from being sawn or dremeled open easily.
    I fully agree that their implementation looks very anaemic.
    However, the length of the rods means they won't come loose or melt out easily. If you actually do a saw test on this lock I think you may find that it's tougher than most people might expect. That is, if the carbide rods are glued in properly.
    Tungsten carbide is not cuttable by any regular tool, you cannot saw it, you cannot cut it with abrasive wheels.
    Carbide does however have a weakness we can take advantage of in this case, it's very brittle. After having sawn most of the plastic, a hammer should be able to snap the rods without too much trouble.
    Another method would be to use a steel disc on a dremel with diamond bonded on the surface (usually meant for stone carving)
    That is, if we were not going in through the lock.

    With that much plastic and so little metal, I really wouldn't worry about any tungsten carbide reinforcement on the lock. Looks like if you dropped it a few times either the plastic pins will snap or the entire lock itself would crack open...

      I have no idea how this would hold up to impact... some plastics can be surprising. But the pick resistance is certainly unimpressive.

    Altought as you said the gun still can be discharged whit a triggerguard, theres still one advantage(or disadvantage for some ppl) of this lock compared to other triggerguards. As i see, because of its sheer size, you cannot insert a magazine to the gun either.

    I think this lock should be a last resort type lock for your children if they somehow managed to open up a safe with your guns in it I would not attach this to my guns and leave them out in the open but if used with a safe I think they serve a pretty good purpose

    T.L. and C.L. work for transport, but for storage, I’d use a Fort Knox brand safe. Much as I would like to rig the safe with a spring loaded boxing glove booby trap, life is not a Tex Avery style cartoon. I’ll just pay for a mirrored back upgrade in it instead.

    Any child gun lock is better than no child gun lock on a firearm. As you demonstrated in your video, if a child can pick a lock, then they bypassed the whole purpose of the child guard gun lock. Best way to probably lock up your firearms is probably putting it into a locked gun vault which you would probably be able to lock pick; therefore, defeating the whole purpose of a a gun vault.

  • @VaguelySynthetic
    @VaguelySynthetic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, LPL, just a thought on this. If you configure the lock to depress the trigger, the hammer should just follow the bolt home, ie not enough energy there to fire the rifle. Might work, might not. Wouldn't prevent drop firing.
