Yep. It’s pretty important especially if you’ve played anything related to Union Cross/Unchained Chi and you’re planning on continuing the series with KH4.
Something you didn’t mention that really helped add to the that dramatic slow-mo finale at the end of boss fights is that the game was specifically programmed so that the only way to defeat a boss was by hitting them with an attack that was considered a “finisher.” So if you had like a twelve hit standard combo, only that final hit would end up actually defeating the boss. That way the dramatic final slow-mo was always on a really slick animation to drive home the feeling of how cool it was.
That’s why the bosses always felt so satisfying. It especially feels super rewarding when you charge up your meter just enough that you switch forms or do a special move to finish it off in a gorgeous manner. The best level overall that I’ve always had the most epic finishes is the final battle with Xemnas. "Dance water dance" still haunts my dreams to this day. Kingdom Hearts was one of my first experiences into "rEaL" games beyond things like harvest moon and the sims and boy was that a difficulty jump to say the least. I spent my entire eight grade summer glued to my ps2 and when I FINALLY beat the game I had my first experience of finishing a piece of media and thinking "well what do I do with my life now" which I answered by making amv's of the game to songs like The Kill lmao
It's cool that you guys talked about the deep combat mechanics of 2, because a lot of these nostalgic retrospectives only focus on how the games made them feel as a kid, and miss the amazing gameplay that's still there. I remember wondering what type of player Drew was when he brought up Kingdom Hearts on his channel, so it's cool to see that he still enjoys the challenge that the game can bring.
One of the biggest things that bugged me while revisiting two is how flat the worlds are. It makes sense, with the new combat stuff you don’t want a lot of platforms to get in the way but the performing segments and verticality really made exploring more fun in kh1. Like if the entire kh2 game had level design like cavern of remembrance it’d be perfect but I still think I enjoy kh1 more overall.
The reason for kh2s weaker worlds was due to the change in allocation of resources, in kh1 the worlds got the majority of resources but in return the combat took a huge toll, in kh2 its reversed combat got all of the resources while the worlds got very little.
the 'get up on the hydra's back!' bit reminded me of when i played a random kingdom hearts game at a friends house and i got stuck on the stage where goofy wouldnt stop repeating 'maybe we can use the rubble like stepping stones!' i couldnt find the rubble he was talking about because it was above me
KH came out when I was 12, it was the perfect age to enjoy the game, I had seen most of the Disney movies the worlds was based on and I grew up watching my older cousin play the FF games so I knew those characters as well…I feel I got the full experience. Think about how some kids didn’t even know who cloud was so they didn’t go crazy when he walks into the Coliseum
Burback videos can evoke some serious emotion. They are put together so well that even though I have never played a Kingdom Hearts game in my life, I still feel nostalgic.
I have been playing Kingdom Hearts since I was six. I am twenty-two now and I will say that I will get emotional from the music, characters and story to this day. Something just hits different in this series.
i remember being a child and kingdom hearts 2 being my older cousins favourite video game so we’d sit in her living room and i would just watch her play while i hid behind a pillow bcs i was so scared of the heartless… good times, good memories 🥲🥲🥲
Watching Eddie and drew talk about kingdomhearts is something I didn’t know I needed and 14:25 I’m really glad they mentioned Donald dying frame 1 in critical mode lol
Man. I remember my brother getting super into and me by extension. Watching him play through ALL of the kingdom hearts was such a bonding experience that I wouldn't trade for the world. the people you played the game with and around were special and the game let you know that
Traverse Town is the worst way they could've possibly introduced people to the game. But once you've finished the game (and especially any spin-offs) it retroactively becomes an amazing intro.
I got Kingdom Hearts 1 on a whim when we first bought a PS2, knowing nothing at all about the game. What followed was a journey spanning 15 years of waiting for the next game to release, trying to catch up with all the different platforms, and getting SO FUCKING CONFUSED with where the story was going. I've grown away from it now, but god damn, the opening title music will ALWAYS make me reminiscent of the simpler times. Simple and Clean, Sanctuary and Dearly Beloved are such awesome pieces of music.
This was such a funny retrospective. I didn't actually get a chance to play KH until recently, but I used to follow the franchise from afar and it's cool to see it from the perspective of people who grew up with it
Man, if tears don't start streaming down my face when I here simple and clean or sanctuary, you know something is wrong with me. Even as a 20 something, I still sing along and cry to those songs.
Kingdom Hearts 3 always makes me tear up, and the first time I played it NGL I cried. Specifically when Xion comes back. It hurts my heart in the best way to watch the seasalt trio reform
The simple and clean intro is still one of my favorite songs. Even though I couldn't tell you the story of kingdom hearts to save my life. I never got past like the third chapter.
Having a teen neighbor with videogames and going to their place with the purpose of playing but watching them play 70% of the time is an experience i will never forget
i never knew i needed to hear drew talking about kingdom hearts but now i dunno how i ever lived without this thx for this video guys and thx for making my day Droofy ♡
13:02 thank you for validating my visceral hate for the demyx boss battle, because he kicked my ass so hard for so long, and after you finally beat him the characters go "wow that guy was weak!" and it filled me with SUCH RAGE as a kid.
I was genuinely laughing out loud this whole video. I love how as adults looking back on our favorite game as a child we see all the flaws and wackiness and all it does is add to the charm and love for the game. I have never seen someone encapsulate my feeling for this game series like you guys. Not a single miss, great work.
12:40 while they might be joking is actually something I loved as a kid and really put me in soras shoes, I mean he got his memory wiped, it's why I insist anyone playing the series just play 1 and 2, then fill in the gap after, that's the right way
I love this so much. Thank you for this video. Genuinely. You guys are some of my favorite content creators and you’re talking about a franchise that has done so much to help me grow as a person that’s been with me since childhood. I’m crying. I know that’s silly but I am.
Fun fact, the Burback's would have never encountered the Roxas fight as kids. Yep, it was a Japan exclusive boss fight pretty much up until the PS3 release way later.
To be fair they said they got stopped at Demyx as kids, so I think when they’re reflecting on the Roxas one they’re talking about when they played as adults, not children 🤷
I just turned 32 and everytime i finished a kingdom hearts game, no matter how many times ive beaten it, I still get emotional. IM SORRY I HAVE FEEINGS, DREW
I agree with the first sentence. The second... just no. Fuck no. Bbs is the second worst kingdom hearts game and of the worst gaming experience I have tried.
I shamelessly cry whenever I talk about this game series because it was my WHOLE childhood. No matter how bad it might be, it is absolutely my favorite set of games and I’m going to show it to my kids. P.S. water guitar guy really made me put the game down for months he was the worst
Good timing for this video. I'm about to start playing The Story So Far, which is a compilation of all 9 Kingdom Hearts releases. With KH 4 being developed, I'm hoping I'm able to really get into the series finally.
@@joshs2734 But also if you want, maybe skip some of the side games. As much as I love Birth by Sleep’s gameplay, its just a prequel and the other games really only add a little bit to the story.
@@leoultimaupgraded9914 I'm one of those people who, if I'm getting into a franchise, always want to know and learn every single little detail, plot, place, character etc. But, I have heard a lot about how much un important filler there can be in KH, and from my understanding, some of the "games" in The Story So Far are really just compilations of cutscenes? Idk, I guess I'll just have to see as I go on.
"I'm gonna be 30 soon, I'm not gonna cry over a children's game" Hard cut to me when KH3 came out bawling like a fucking baby at the Sea Salt Trio reunion
“And if you like questions, you’re gonna have more of those” so accurate with kingdom hearts 🤣 8 year old me was so confused and so in love at the same time
Oh my god this explains my experience with the series so well😂 Especially wondering who tf Roxas was when starting KH2. 12:45 This video is so hilarious. 😂 Sora really was just as confused as us and org 13 really enjoyed just messing with all our heads. 14:55 “get up on the hydra’s back!” brings back so many traumatic memories lmfao.
For anyone who wants to know the music that starts at 3:19 is a song called "Mustaches and Martinis" by "Chalalatas". Even though its royalty free I wish they would list their music in the description.
The Demyx legitimately stopped all my progress for like 2 and a half years. To this day I have never struggled as hard as I have in that boss fight. Even Sans, Dark Souls, kh secret bosses have not even being able to scratch the amount of times I attempted that one boss battle. I can probably breeze through it now but time limits are just such a psychout that I could still only say probably
I know you're being funny but I went through the series from start to finish in 2021 at the age of 34 and I loved it. Super emotional. So there's no age limit on this.
finally for once, youtube recommended me a channel that is a duo with well thought out arguments and banther between both. i also learned the hard way that there is a rng mickey system when you die on the zalden? bridge boss fight lmao. and yes i also refused to turn the difficulty down but i was already on normal, that thing is still a skill check, i think that was the only fight in the game that forced me to spam items lol.
My husband managed to snag all the Kingdom Hearts games during the hour that the PlayStation store glitched and sold all of them, even 3, for a $30 bundle. We've spent the past year playing through all of them together and we're about halfway through Birth by Sleep right now. I knew about KH as a kid but was too overwhelmed by how many consoles you needed to play so I never tried it, despite being a MASSIVE Disney fan. I'm glad we have all of them on PlayStation now because they're so much fun and so cute! I was really missing out as a kid.
ahhh my childhood, thank you for a loving but honest review of these games! i watched my mom play KH 1 and 1.5 and I played 2. A lot of ppl over the years have disregarded the series for being needlessly confusing while others ignore all these issues entirely and proclaim it as perfect. I love these games and fully embrace their strange, convolutedness cuz at the end of the day a perfect game doesn't exist so might as well just get weird with it
I flippin love this series. Thank you for talking about it in a respectful way The only reason that the whole story is incomprehensible is because the story is very long and each game has something to add to it. And its a loooong series. But if you play each game in order, boom, you will understand the whole story and the KH3 will make you cry.
Kingdom Hearts holds a special place in my heart. When it came out, I was rather poor and just had pokemon gold for the gameboy that I shared with my brother. When my stepfather came into our lives, he brought with him the ps2 and Kingdom Hearts. The opening blew my mind. I had no idea "videogames could look like movies" (as I stated repeatedly back then). It is the reason I decided to pursue game developement.
Yep, video lost all credibility for me there. "So we're not going to explain it either" literally takes 5 seconds, while going through castle oblivion, Marluxia and Larxene with the help of naminé, re-write Sora's memories making him forget the people and places he knew and replacing them with false memories, after sora defeats Marluxia he finds Naminé and she tells him what happened and why, which sora then goes into the pod to have his memories restored.
I’m sorry but the prologue for kingdom hearts 2 is a find childhood memory for me idk why lmao but I really loved the game despite the fact I never finished all of it.
My first exposure to the KH series was volume 1 of the Kingdom Hearts 2 manga, which was at my local library. The manga series honestly tells the story better than the games in some ways because the sense of humor makes the absurd moments stick out less. When Namine told Roxas "you aren't supposed to exist," it blew my tiny 8-year-old mind and got me instantly hooked. Roxas became my favorite character, so whenever people complain about the prologue it always makes me a bit sad. I also grew up in an era where, if there was ever any games I didn't have a console for or just couldn't afford, I could just look up playthroughs of it on youtube. Also, if you didn't want to play Chain of Memories, you could just read the manga, which was just a better experience overall imo. Trying to figure out wtf was going on was a big part of the appeal for me as a kid, so I think my experience with KH2 was wayyy different from how most people describe theirs
It startes with me KH1 being my very first video game i played, back on the PS2. It became me sticking with the series because of how stupidly crazy the lore is. Its so entertaining trying to explain it to someone else.
As someone who has played through these games multiple times, thank you for the final seconds of the KH2 ending. Still gives me chills. Also, not covering KH3 was a choice...and I love it! 🤣
Fun Fact: in the german version of Kingdom Hearts Riku actually has the same voice actor as Anakin Skywalker. It really pushed the Anakin comparison further and it's awesome.
As an old fart who got into this game when it first came out for the Final Fantasy elements with the Disney worlds just as an added bonus, it's cool to hear from people who enjoyed it without any connection to that franchise (and, in fact, y'all made this entire video without ever saying Final Fantasy a single time, something I don't think has ever happened in the history of Kingdom Hearts commentary)

@@JPer811 how was that an excuse? Thats literally the reason they gave when asked about the shift in gameplay from kh1 to kh2.
“As you progress, combat becomes more complex” *shows spamming reflect*
the 'get up on the hydra's back!' bit reminded me of when i played a random kingdom hearts game at a friends house and i got stuck on the stage where goofy wouldnt stop repeating 'maybe we can use the rubble like stepping stones!' i couldnt find the rubble he was talking about because it was above me
The burback channel is insane (but we love it)
KH came out when I was 12, it was the perfect age to enjoy the game, I had seen most of the Disney movies the worlds was based on and I grew up watching my older cousin play the FF games so I knew those characters as well…I feel I got the full experience. Think about how some kids didn’t even know who cloud was so they didn’t go crazy when he walks into the Coliseum
I still call him Cloud from Kingdom Hearts. Drives my FF7 loving friends crazy
Burback videos can evoke some serious emotion. They are put together so well that even though I have never played a Kingdom Hearts game in my life, I still feel nostalgic.
Sora: We’re back
Kairi: You’re home.
It could have ended there absolutely nothing else and it would still be my favorite game of all time
In my head canon it ended at 2
Ngl I cried at the end of KH2 when I beat it so many years ago. The music still chokes me up whenever I relisten to it.

This video has rekindled my love for Kingdom Hearts again and I'm going back to finish up KH3. Thanks for the memories, Burback!!

It's a story about three friends Sora, Riku, and Kairi. No? Donald and Goofy? Oh ok
Man. I remember my brother getting super into and me by extension. Watching him play through ALL of the kingdom hearts was such a bonding experience that I wouldn't trade for the world. the people you played the game with and around were special and the game let you know that
I love that from what I can tell y’all record these in the same room. It really goes a long way for the chemistry during the video.
three people talking over eachother is the natural evolution of the two people talking over eachother bit
19:16 Riku picking up King Mickey like a toddler is so cute
Kingdom Hearts 3 always makes me tear up, and the first time I played it NGL I cried. Specifically when Xion comes back. It hurts my heart in the best way to watch the seasalt trio reform
6:49 The PS4 game actually has upgrades you can purchase with points. You can upgrade what you said you could upgrade in the PS2 game.
4:03 - well eddie. the answer to that is 358/2
The simple and clean intro is still one of my favorite songs. Even though I couldn't tell you the story of kingdom hearts to save my life. I never got past like the third chapter.
How are y’all not going to mention the absolute banger that is simple & clean????
Having a teen neighbor with videogames and going to their place with the purpose of playing but watching them play 70% of the time is an experience i will never forget
i never knew i needed to hear drew talking about kingdom hearts but now i dunno how i ever lived without this
thx for this video guys
and thx for making my day Droofy ♡

Drew being Goofy is something I didn't know I wanted in my life
Fun fact, the Burback's would have never encountered the Roxas fight as kids.
Yep, it was a Japan exclusive boss fight pretty much up until the PS3 release way later.
Unless you got a pirated PS2 and got the PS2 version of Final Mix? Yeah very true
To be fair they said they got stopped at Demyx as kids, so I think when they’re reflecting on the Roxas one they’re talking about when they played as adults, not children 🤷
this is the most video ever special thanks to drew for being goofy
I just turned 32 and everytime i finished a kingdom hearts game, no matter how many times ive beaten it, I still get emotional.
IM SORRY I HAVE FEEINGS, DREW
Just turned 34 yesterday, and SAME.
kh2 remains my favorite game out of all of them too. but birth by sleep slapped so unexpectedly, especially when it got to console
I agree with the first sentence. The second... just no. Fuck no. Bbs is the second worst kingdom hearts game and of the worst gaming experience I have tried.
@@johnpantag472 Me but feeling that way about DDD lmao
@Sophie that's wild i loved the gameplay. The abilities show you playing as trained Keyblade warriors.
@@dtanobo The problem for me is that the game has absolute garbage aerial mobility in a series that pride itself on it's aerial combat.
Yup. I don’t get the hate for BBS. Loved it, especially for the story.
Bit of advice, play in the order the games released in, it makes the story flow better
@@poliorice3600 Good to know, thanks!
Yeah, you can find 30 to an hour minutes video pretty much telling you the most important story points in the series.
14:27 Watching Donald get folded in slow-mo killed me 😂
Lmao the drawn out “awwwhhhhhhhh…”
The boys are talking about my favourite series... In a complimentary way?? Amazing.
"I'm gonna be 30 soon, I'm not gonna cry over a children's game"
Hard cut to me when KH3 came out bawling like a fucking baby at the Sea Salt Trio reunion
This is perfect because I just started playing the first Kingdom Hearts the other day.
The fact that sooo many people got kh1 and them went right to kh2 jjst thinking COM was just a side game was so troll by namura and I love it
That never happened pal. Everyone that played kh2 when it came out didn't even know com exists.
The opening of KH2 explained COM for the people who didn’t play it, but it was still hella confusing
finally for once, youtube recommended me a channel that is a duo with well thought out arguments and banther between both.
i also learned the hard way that there is a rng mickey system when you die on the zalden? bridge boss fight lmao.
and yes i also refused to turn the difficulty down but i was already on normal, that thing is still a skill check, i think that was the only fight in the game that forced me to spam items lol.

Gotta love goofy drew
My husband managed to snag all the Kingdom Hearts games during the hour that the PlayStation store glitched and sold all of them, even 3, for a $30 bundle. We've spent the past year playing through all of them together and we're about halfway through Birth by Sleep right now. I knew about KH as a kid but was too overwhelmed by how many consoles you needed to play so I never tried it, despite being a MASSIVE Disney fan. I'm glad we have all of them on PlayStation now because they're so much fun and so cute! I was really missing out as a kid.
great video like the rest, always happy to see y'all upload. The Drew guest star came right out of left field and I'm all for it
ahhh my childhood, thank you for a loving but honest review of these games! i watched my mom play KH 1 and 1.5 and I played 2.
Thank you for talking about it in a respectful way
The only reason that the whole story is incomprehensible is because the story is very long and each game has something to add to it.
"They dont tell you why Sora is in this pod."
But they did. In Chain of Memories.
THATS WHAT IM SAYING!!
"In this game" and chain of memories doesn't count because it's shite
@@DovahUm for a game boy advanced game, it was an impressive game for its time.
@@Luxiaaa-Z "credibility" ☠️ bro it's a meme video, and not everyone cares or is a nerd for KH lore, chill the f up
THAT COMMERCIAL IS WHAT MADE ME BUY THE GAME WAY BACK IN 2002. Bless you for unlocking that hidden memory.
I’m sorry but the prologue for kingdom hearts 2 is a find childhood memory for me idk why lmao but I really loved the game despite the fact I never finished all of it.
14:59 Wow, they were so ahead of their time with the Jujitsu Kaisen reference

KH is ridiculously convoluted and at times disappointing, but it's forever and always my favorite game series
It's not
As an old fart who got into this game when it first came out for the Final Fantasy elements with the Disney worlds just as an added bonus, it's cool to hear from people who enjoyed it without any connection to that franchise (and, in fact, y'all made this entire video without ever saying Final Fantasy a single time, something I don't think has ever happened in the history of Kingdom Hearts commentary)
It was a great idea to make Drew the third Burback twin. Having only two twins is so cliché these days.
