DIRTY & DANGEROUS! Historic GUATEMALA CITY is NOT beautiful like some might say...

  • Some TH-camrs purposely paint a misleading impression of a place to please locals and gain likes / new subscribers. This can lead to somebody watching and then paying thousands to travel across the world, only to have their holiday / vacation ruined when they realize the video that persuaded them to visit said location was nothing but smoke and mirrors. Always be sure to investigate a place inside out so you can make an informed decision. There's way too many TH-camrs sugar coating places these days (for their own personal growth of their channel).
On a side note, the everyday people of Guatemala City I met were genuinely very kind and sincere. It's the homeless people of Guatemala City who are wasted out of their minds on alcohol or drugs at all hours of the day (including sunrise) who totally ruin the atmosphere and sense of safety in the historic centre. Surrounding streets are not so safe and are plastered in graffiti. Go in numbers if you do venture into zone 1 and take caution at all times with yourself and your valuables.
This video is probably easier to watch that have me describe in here / why I came away with slightly dissapointed feelings about the historic centre of Guatemala City. Thank god for my stunning Airbnb; that place was my hide away retreat when it all because too much.

As a Guatemalan, I love your honesty. It does not feel safe even for the locals, and seeing those young drug addicts ruin the experience, and it's true I used to walk by zone 1 a lot, and it smelled pee everywhere, tons of trash... just disgusting!. A famous vlogger came to "El basurero de la zona 3 (the garbage dump from that zone) " he recorded how people lived there and a lot of Guatemalans got mad at him, tons of dislikes, even hate comments asking him to come back and go to the good areas, smh. Anyway... Hope you enjoyed the good spots of the country!

Hey Josh, thanks for your comment. I had a great time at the market in Zone 1, it was possibly one of the most impressive markets I had ever visited in all of Latin America 👌! Friendly stall owners and an overall great experience.
It doesn’t surprise me after the extreme hate I have received from Guatemalans on my video that the vlogger you mention, who showed a side that many don’t want showcased, would receive hate in the same way. I guess the agitated people commenting are very patriotic and not able to see that it’s actually positive to show all sides of a place rather than only the beauty. No traveller appreciates arriving in a destination only to discover that everything online they had seen was fictitious.
I see huge potential in Zone 1, gentrification will no doubt occur in the coming years. I just hope those tent cities and hoards of drunk/drugged people can be rehoused and integrated back into the working society. Most aren’t even from Guatemala, they’re become trapped there on their way to USA. Sad times but let’s hope for positive change pronto 😃!! Thanks for sharing your experiences man!! ❤️

It's a shame that you decided to focus only on the negative, I've been to some European countries and cities in the US that are as dirty and very dangerous. Yes, Guatemala City does feel unsafe in many parts, but guess what, so are places in Scotland, France, Slovakia, Spain... Etc. But just like those countries there are also a lot of safe places to visit. I think it's probably your prejudices that allow you to focus on those aspects only. Frankly, as a Guatemalan I am a bit disgusted by your video, because the Historic part of Guatemala is beautiful and for the most part is pretty safe and clean compared to other big cities in Central America. You can ask many Salvadorans, Honduran, Nicaraguan, Costa Rican travelers and they will say the same.

I was disgusted by the filth in the streets of Zone 1, human excrement and urine, as well as trash, graffiti and a very real sense of shady characters eyeing my every move. You can feel what you want about my video, but I can’t change my honest experiences in the week I had there. I chose to make this video because everything else on TH-cam was fake and unrealistic. Tourists don’t appreciate that when they are planning on visiting a place so I hope my version shows the other side. By the way, yes, bad places are everywhere in the world - I know that. But this video wasn’t about that, it was about travel TH-camrs who go to a place, lie their ass off to please locals and gather new subscribers. I don’t care about that - all I am interested in is showing a place for how it really is. Zone 1 sadly wasn’t up to standard.

I don't mean to be contrary, but I've always had a great time in Guatemala City. Sure, there is a lot of poverty and problems, but also lots to do and see. Unfortunately, it's not a place I would recommend one visit immediately. I live in Guatemala so I find myself needing to be there often. I always make a fun time of it. Next time, perhaps you should stay in the richer zones. This would insulate you from the parts you seem to not be enjoying. Zone 4 is fun hip safe and clean with lots of security. Zone 1 is only for a quick visit or if you have need to be there or speak Spanish fluently. I see your point, zone 1 is a bit shocking if you've never been, but it also has great pizza, bars, nightlife, my favorite cantina -though not for the faint of heart. Sorry you had such a disappointing time. You just need a guide and friends with possibly a car. NO ONE WALKS. YOU DRIVE UBER EVERYWHERE. You could also go straight to Antigua and never see any of this only 45mins away.

    • @FinnDelMundoTravel
      @FinnDelMundoTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Hey David, excellent comment, cheers for this information!! A common theme being mentioned by many is to stay in zone 4. I’ll be staying there if I go back. I think Antigua sounds more appealing or Tikal. Do you think the massive amounts of people homeless in the central plaza and around La Sexta will ever be addressed? Has it always been this much of an issue? Early one morning a guy who was drunk walking toward me cornered me against a building in La Sexta before his other friend pulled him away - others stared at me for very uncomfortable amounts of time. Staring in most cultures is considered rude yet it was beyond me how many eyes were on me in that historic zone. Makes me uncomfortable thinking about it. Do you think it could be the United States deporting refugees back south of their border? The situation overall was sad. It’s why I made a point of making this video because every other TH-camr seemed to be floating around in some fantasy land with no mention of zone 1’s dark side.

@@FinnDelMundoTravel sorry to hear about your near robbery. Though I'm not surprised. In Guatemala, theft is a problem depending on where you are. I imagine the camera gear doesn't help you at all. I always feel similar when I have mine out. Zone one has always had a lot of poverty, at least since my time here. A lot of the homeless there are actually people refugees from other nearby countries who are hoping to migrate further north but got stuck in Guatemala, so they ended up in the city where there are more resources and help. There's a lot of black and Haitian refugee on one end mixed with locals who have fallen on hard times and turned to drugs and alcohol near the plaza park. A few Avenues over also organized prostitution that is involved in theft too. Though to put it in perspective.... In Guate, I've been robbed twice, petty theft 200 dollars from my bag and another 200 Quetzales from my wallet. In the USA, I've been attacked numerous times, held at knife and gun point, beaten up, etc. I still think guatemala is safer than parts of the USA. You could make this same video about many cities around the world, the big difference being that the more developed nations have more money and laws to control, move, and displace homeless populations to non tourist areas. For instance, right outside DC and the white house, you can encounter a ring of poverty, the same in CDMX. If you go to NYC and leave Manhattan, you'll witness lots of poverty too. In Philly, the neighborhood of Kensington looks like an episode of the walking dead zombies doped up on cheap fentanyl. In Madrid, you'll see gangs of organized immigrants/homeless people all nearby the busiest areas or just one block over. Sadly, I don't think there are plans to change or help the people in zone 1. Guatemala has a lot of problems with corruption and much of the international aid gets pocketed and stolen before it can do any intended good.

That area of town has important historic, social, and even sentimental significance to Guatemalans of a certain generation whose collective memory of the area is connected to important periods of their life (the “turd” comparison may. be a bit jarring and may feel disrespectful to Guatemalans, especially those millions who have had to emigrate and whose nostalgia is an important source of connection to their homeland) . But yes, “El Centro” is very much outside of its heyday by at least 40-50 years. I live in Houston and I can promise you that you’ll experience a similar perspective if you walk around our downtown. Today’s middle/upper class Guatemalans are not necessarily spending time in this area and the city has several very high-end areas which are more appealing to them as economic centers of business and leisure. Zone 1 has touristic potential and sections have received investment but it will taken a lot more to bring it up to the expectation of foreign tourism. I personally see the development of a more artsy/bohemian scene working well in that zone but again it takes planning and lots of money. The most recent catastrophic earthquake to hit Guatemala was in 1976 and it killed 20,000 people and changed the face of the city which accounts for the odd combinations of architecture in “the historic center”. I just returned from Skopje, Macedonia and they’ve undergone a massive beautification program to bring the city in line with the expectations of western tourists and it is paying dividends in the increased number of visitors. But gues what? Like gentrificaron, the locals feel that they are being robbed of the soul and spirit of their city and the collective memory they have of their city. So I’m sure it’s a complicated situation. There are some travelogues on TH-cam of that same area of Guatemala City but from the 1950s. It shows how that same area is an example of modernity and progress in Guatemala.

My video title does state that the video is about the historic zone so I don’t feel like it is misleading viewers to believe this encompasses the entire city of Guatemala. People need to be aware that the historic centre isn’t how the majority of TH-cam videos portray it to be.

I recently moved to Guatemala at the age of 22 to live with my fiancee, were living in Zone 3, I'm from New Zealand, I feel safe but my parents in law and one of my brother in law are lawyers, my fiancee is a doctor, I have a lot of support, this is not the place where you can casually stroll down random streets like back home. There definitely are lots of piles of rubbish around. Its a convenient location and lots of great food around.
But many parts of the city are very beautiful, and I'm a kiwi who has never even been to Auckland the biggest city in my country, so for me Guatemala city is the biggest an most beautiful I have seen in my life. I love how green the city and country is, makes me feel at home coming from NZ.
Is it as safe as western countries? No. But the people here are far less spiritually dead like people in western society's, there is far less nonsense happening, there is a real passion for Christ with Guatemalan people. Extreme violence, but also extreme hospitality and kindness is los guatemaltecos.

My aim of this video was to expose the fact that reputable TH-camrs have been painting false impressions of places for far too long and that this type of misleading garbage needs to stop. Did you watch the whole video?
Personally I choose not to research a location prior to arrival. In my opinion, prior research spoils the whole reason for travel. Why would I want to arrive in a place, knowing it already? Boring. There would be no element of surprise or ability for me to give an honest and neutral opinion in my videos. In this instance, it backfired slightly. My bad, onwards and upwards.
If you watch the video all the way through I do point out that there are other zones in Guatemala City than zone 1 that must nice. Also that outside of Guatemala City, there will be beautiful places. My video isn’t a “hating on Guatemala City video”, this is a warning to anyone watching that most TH-camr accounts of a place are total fluffed up horseshit.

I love it when people say 'if you had taken time to do your research' as if that implies stupidity. Why would someone want to extensively research a place before going (except basics like simple history, language, religion etc)? The whole point of travel is discovery, not seeing what you have already read about. As Finn said, that's boring. If people think they need to research everything about a city before going there, they're doing it backwards. The discovery process IS research.

Every city has its bad places and it's good areas and of course that is subjective. I currently live in Brooklyn, NY and sure there is crime, shootings, drugs, gangs, homeless, some people peeing at the park, sleeping in the parks, and other problems. There was even a stabbing at my train stop about a week ago and I don't live in one of the dangerous neighborhoods, at least I don't think I do. The point is that your mindset has a lot to do with how you perceive your surroundings. If someone pissing in the corner or even slippery paint on the crosswalk bothers you to the point that you would call a place a polished turd it says more about your mindset than the place. People staring at you could've been out of curiosity, maybe the equipment, maybe the blue eyes, or maybe they were going to mug you. Yet, I doubt everyone was planning to mug you. When I first came to the NYC I was a little paranoid at first. After a while I began hanging out. I used to hang out in the Lower East Side. I saw the homeless, the junkies drooling on the sidewalks doing the heroin nod, and the random drunk passed out in the corner or at the park. That didn't stop me from hanging out at the bars, making friends with the locals, and having a great time. I made some friends and even got invited to various house parties. It was great specially as a single guy with no family. Things are different now. Usually, when I visit a place I look around and figure out where I can hang out and where I can't. Of course I don't go off into the alleys, deserted streets, or the streets with closed down stores. That is just common sense and that goes for every city. If I get lost and end up in one of those places I just keep going and try to find where the good stuff is.

Historic center really is just "la sexta" the rest of zone one is very sketchy haha however I do love La sexta, is cheap and I always have a great time. There are another great zones in the city like zone 10,14 and 16. However, if you come from a first world country you won't find many interesting things there, as pretty much every city in New Zealand probably look better and are more interesting. However, many central Americans get really impressed with Guatemala city, and I do think that is worth a visit if you are coming to Guatemala anyway. Sadly I was restrained by time and was there for a week so I only experienced Zone 1. You know, if the social issues were different, the entire place would thrive and tourism would increase tenfold. Drunk/drugged people are unpredictable and dangerous, and being surrounded by them wasn’t nice. I was always on edge. My experience makes me want to come back and prove that Guatemala as a country is a top travel destination 👌. Thanks for your advise 😀!!

Sadly, Guatemala city has lots of problems but I think the city has a lot of personality and its worth exploring as long as you know that you're gonna get good and bad parts haha. As for the rest of the country, Antigua, Atitlán and Semuc Champey are top tier destinations , and Tikal is directly one of the most beautiful things my eyes have ever seen. Zone 1 is the historic center, very interesting to get to know the working class and eat cheaply at the markets(as long as you don't go to far away from the main street)
Zone 10 and 14 are the richest parts of the city, pretty good if you want to take a wal, specially in avenida las Américas which is very green and safe.
Finally zone 16 has Cayalá, which is a small European city inside Guatemala city haha, it's also probably the safest part of Guatemala city.

To do a video like that is like telling people don’t go to Guatemala, and don’t even trying to go to Guatemala city. But it’s to malicious to put as is major thing the uncomfortable situation and things you don’t like and even as a locals wanted. Your focus has tobe in the real good things and recommended areas in the city. I been en NYC or Philadelphia, Boston, and I never going to say don’t go tho this place because so disgusting and horrible, cuz as soon as you say that people will generally think everything in That place is like that. And that is the thing I don’t like this video. I never say keep away from NYC because the Bronx is unsafe smell like shit and piss everywhere, and @the Treemont Blvd you. can be assault there are to much drugs smugglers, prostitution etc. …. Don’t even trying to visit NYC.. sounds ridiculous right ? Even if true cuz what I’m saying it’s totally true I’m not lying !! True, but not once do I say never visit Zone 1 of Guatemala City. I made this video because everyone else on TH-cam pretends this filthy side to Guatemala City does not exist. Not much else to it other than me making a video about TH-camrs being fake when they go to a location. Seeing both sides is great because it will prepare a total travel virgin for the worst rather than sending them out there oblivious to the danger which is absolutely lurking in Zone 1. Hey man look, you can take offence to the experience I had, OR realise that something is majorly wrong in Zone 1 worth acknowledging. The world isn’t all rainbows and tea parties unfortunately. PS, I did attempt to give balance to this video with the excellent central market. That place had some of the nicest people I met during my stay in Guatemala. I highly recommend seeing it.

Zone one is a so, so zone. I'm from Guatemala City, and won't disagree with you on the things that you have seen, and you are right its not so safe crime has been an issue for decades in our city. Tho with that said Guatemala City, has more to offer got to Zone 10 or zone 16 and 15 also parts of zone 4 and 9 you would see different things there and better. I honestly appreciate the rest of TH-camrs, not because they "sugar coat" but rather they show a good image of Guatemala city that is already severely damaged. While i understand you were brutally honest one thing is right you only focused on the bad parts of one specific zone. I'm not gonna compare Guatemala City with a city of a first world that would be stupid, but i can compare Guatemala city with the rest of Central American capitals and many people say it's one of the greatest in the region, also while Guatemalan tourism is in the preliferies, Some tourist said they enjoy Guatemala city because that's where the real people are as opposed to tikal or Antigua you would only tourist in those areas.

Ok lets make something very clear, this guy is obviously an amateur traveler that gets "shocked" with minimal stuff, if you have truly traveled and been to places in Asia, Africa and India some of the stuff he pointed out, really wouldn't surprise you . Given by the amount of views and subscribers he has, he's just an average Joe desperate to grow his channel by being condescending and controversial. Guatemala IS a third world country, it's known to be a corrupt, when you made plans to visit what were you expecting? a Dubai experience? However, Guatemala is also know to have some of the most beautiful landscapes, delicious food and their locals being some of the most friendly ever. This budget backpacker would not be able to afford some of the nicer areas and truly show his viewers the higher end places in the Capitol such as Cayala, where prices are comparable to those in Soho in NYC and everything is excellent quality. I truly feel sorry for this dude. Good try my friend trying to crap on a city that you so clearly didn't take the time to learn about nor explore. What he did was almost like visiting the south east of Washington DC and calling the whole city dirty and dangerous 🤣. Good luck dude.

Woah someone’s woken up on the wrong side of the bed. It’s evident since you missed the entire point of why I made this video in the first place: to expose liars who travel to whatever location in the world to pretend it’s some majestical fantasy land that has no issues or bad points. Did you miss that part? 🤦 You realise this video is about Zone 1 and not the entire city of Guatemala, nor the entire country? Is that sinking in or am I talking to a potato?
As for my monetary status: that would be none of your business, nor relevant to this video’s message, so before you condescend down that path, I’d like to kindly remind you to mind your own business. I stayed in zone 1, had an experience worth sharing, and now I’m dealing with really tacky Karens who would rather abuse me that accept the fact that the historic zone of GC is dirty and unsafe.
Your assumption that I’m trying to boost my channel… lol If I actually cared about YT I would be uploading twice a week and begging for likes and subscribers 🤣. Does this happen in any of my videos? No. So on that front, you are just clutching at straws.

I feel in visiting any country it's important to take into account safety concerns. True many vloggers focus on the positive and gloss over realities such as crime and poverty. However, ANY place you go, small town to big cities there will be this dichotomy. Even San Francisco and NYC are known to be dangerous or have many homeless people. So to title this video with such negativity and mainly focus on the negativity is reverting back to the way many foreign countries were viewed just ten, twenty years ago. Through the lens of a financially comfortable Westerner, condescending towards the darker sides of a country. You're not being revolutionary or standing out by reverting back to how tourists were just a few decades ago. It's refreshing to see vloggers being able to take into account the downsides and still have a good time. It's up to a traveller to do their research and have their wits about them when visiting anywhere new. If you were surprised to find a third world country's large city has crime, noise, pollution, and poverty then maybe you need to read or travel more.

I used to live 1 hour away from esquipulas (I havent typed that since a long time) and the giant church is the only beautiful place while the rest are small taxis and trash. Most of the time I live in the mountains and hills to go to my school sometimes and walk long distances about like a kilometer, its not the safest road on the hills and mountains but one you go to a place where houses are showing up, its peaceful but some trash but kids like picking up trash and make toys. This is just my experience and I dont say that you are wrong but the city is mostly the same as my town.

Hey my friend basically you can go to all countries in the world and film bad things, there is no perfect country. I am a proud Guatemalan and I have traveled around the world and the more I travel the more I love my country. I can understand your frustration by walking on the streets the same I felt in NY metro system, or the enormous amount of people living on the streets in San Francisco just besides the Trolley on Market Street at Powell...have you seen, my friend, in Montreal, Canada all homeless in winter time? With all that fucking snow? That's completely inhumane...you as a tourist feel so bad for them...have you ever been in London at night? all the guys peeing on the streets and looking for fights??? Or in Los Angeles walking in Skid Row neighborhood??? That's a real shit...or maybe have you walked in Brussels, Belgium and see the thousands of people asking for money on the streests? Have you ever been in Israel and walked were the Filipino prostitutes are? Near the bus station in Tel Aviv...or in Cairo, Egypt with all those scammers? Or the the dirty streest in Istanbul, Turkey near the grand bazar? Have you ever been in Yulin, China at the Dog meat festival, my friend? That's really disgusting...the same as seeing people spitting on the streets in Finland 🇫🇮 or in Mexico city where there are a lot of thieves, scammers and kidnappers? Or in Cuba where you see little girls going with all fucking old farts just for money??? No my friend there is no a country what can give everything you want...

You cannot demean, (micro aggression) insult and be intellectually dishonest against Central America without also insulting Mexicans. Both Central America and Mexico (MESO AMERICA) share the same ancestors, grandparents and forefathers. They are the same people, culture, race and share the same history, Languages, customs and geographical legacies. Guatemala and Mexico are the same nation with separate political divisions but no civilization borders. You cannot bash a Guatemalan Nahua or Mayan without bashing their Mexica brothers also. th-cam.com/video/ZV0IA5Qe1o4/w-d-xo.html

I made a video about TH-camrs who don’t show all sides of a location when they film. The video could have been filmed in Timbuktu but it just happened to be in Guatemala City, Zone 1. The path you are going down has nothing to do with my video other than being a nice piece of history that I am well aware of. Why the micro aggression? Why are you trying to turn this into something way more complex than it has to be? I gave an honest account of my week in squalor to bring light to others that TH-cam videos don’t always show the full truth. Simple as that. Where Mexico comes into my time in historic zone 1 is beyond me other than it being a joined nation 10k years ago. The past is long gone. Today Mexico and Guatemala are nothing alike other than the shared history and ethnic heritage.

I watched your video and feel sorry that you have spent more time critiquing the place than enjoying it. I have visited Guatemala City, and yes, there are wrong places, but unless you are from an underground area with no other humans around it. No place in the world is safe or one hundred percent safe. Every single city in the world has good and evil. I live in the United States, and sadly, three famous cities top the fifty most dangerous cities in the world in 2023. As a tourist, you must exercise common sense and follow your instincts. Why would you visit an area that looks lonely and has no business for you to visit? Or if you feel so unsafe visiting this particular place, stay in your own safe country.

I am an ex-pat in Guatemala City, and this is a terrible take on the city! As much as you accuse other bloggers of painting a particular impression to gain likes and new subscribers, you've done the same with this video. You are only showing your viewers the central part of the city. This is known to be unsafe, and yes, there are a lot of homeless and drug addicts here. However, I live in Cuidad Cayala, a very exclusive, clean, and safe area in the city. Many vloggers visit this neighborhood, and they talk about how much they love it because it's very nice here. Zone 4, Zone 10, and Zone 14 are also very nice. I am an obvious foreigner and have walked around safely in those Zones. Just like cities in the USA and many other places worldwide, there are safe and dangerous areas. You are only showing one side of the city, which is ironic because you are accusing other vloggers of doing this.
