      First off, great video, thank you very much! There is just one thing i'm left wondering.. What happens if you put the gain on, on the scarlett device, without the cloudlifter? Would that get a very different result? Sorry if this is a wierd question, i'm quite new to all this tech.

      Hey I recently just got a Triton Fathed inline preamp & have the same Scarlet 2i2. The issue is I don’t hear anything when I plug the pre amp (48volt on). I increase the gain but get static noise. Is my preamp just busted?

    i didn't use anything like the Cloudlifter all i did was plug the Shur SM7B into the Scarlett Solo and then set it up with RTX Voice and VoiceMeeter Banana and it honestly sounds even better than using the CloudLifter.

    • @kettnercreative
      @kettnercreative  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yes. RTX voice and VoiceMeeter can add a lot of options for improving the sound while the CloudLifter will only increase the gain.

      @Lily Crawford Cloudlifter or Fethead? Which one of both is better? Prices are clearly different.

    • @IzzyTheTanuki
      @IzzyTheTanuki ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tunaqua You'll have to get a second XLR cable if you go with the Cloudlifter, the Cloudlifter also offers less gain than the Fethead. With the Fethead, you also get a layer of protection for your SM7B in case the phantom power decides to go crazy. Although, phantom power damage to your microphone isn't really something you need to worry too much about.

    • @syf_jojiahhh2834

      @@tunaqua can't really advocate for fatheads as I have heard some people with somewhat negative experiences with them, but you can never go wrong with a CL1, it is a bit pricey but I'd definitely say you get what you pay for in this case

But it does not work with the Focusrite. They sound horrible with the Scarlett 2i2. Is there any free-ware for a equalizer or something so I don't need to go buy a sound mixer? You have answered all my main questions about gain, cloudlifter, and basic setup. Thank you. I was curious about the Shure SM7B and would love to try this mic one day for voice overs. Just for comparison sake, I currently use an Aston Spirit microphone (price range is *roughly* similar). In my case (for the Aston Spirit and pop filter), i only put the Gain at level 6 on Focusrite 2i2 during Raw Recording in Pro Tools. I prefer to add an extra Boost 1.5db afterwards - once I haved cleaned up all the audio with Izotope RX. There are many ways of recording and treating audio in Pro Tools. I am not an Engineer but use plugins and a general setup recommended by Engineers. Ex. Noise Gate, Limiter-Compressor, Maxim (to limit ouput levels between -3db and -6db). Things are routed to a Bus. After I boost the clean audio clip 1.5db, i bounce the clip and things sound pretty decent to me in headphones and in my monitor speakers.

    I have the sm7b -> SE Dynamite -> Scarlett Solo. When the gain is at around 12 O'clock, I hear some noticeable white noise in the background.
    Are you sure that there is no "Noise suppression" of some sort applied on your audio coming from the SM7b? Even when you turned the knob to the max and started clipping, I was very surprised that there wasn't any noise AT ALL! If I do this with my setup, noise level will go above -20db.
    Also at 3:45 and 5:00, your breath does not sound natural to me, but you say in the video "no post processing".
    So please let me know, is it my setup that has a problem with white noise? or did you apply some noise suppression to your audio? and also how can you not have tons of noise when you cranked the knob up to 100% at 4:53. Thanks!

    • @kettnercreative
      @kettnercreative  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Pola,
      I keep things extremely simple on this channel. Very rarely do I ever touch/edit the audio aside from adjusting the level since I'm always trying to accurately represent the equipment.
      I do know that the Solo can perform a little bit differently if you're on PC and don't have the current driver. But this doesn't explain that noise that you're explaining.
      With the scarlett solo, the headphone amp is really hissy/noisy, do you hear the white noise when you're listening to a recording, or just when you're live monitoring yourself? Sometimes there can be.a difference.
      I'm not really sure what else to suggest. I don't think the Dynamite has any noticeable noise difference compared to the Cloudlifter.

    Thank you for posting this video (all be it, months ago, lol). I guess my expectations were too high when dropping about $150 on the Cloudlifter. I have the same exact setup shown in this video. I went from fully cranked to max on my 2i2 to about 2PM on the gain knob with the CloudLifter (during streams and conference calls so listeners wouldn't think I wasn't heard loud enough). I guess the gain knob being at around 1PM-2PM on the 2i2 with the SM7B and CloudLifter is normal. Dare I say I have to put it at near 3PM so I'm loud and clear on conference calls with some headroom and not clipping. Overall, such a pricey setup but I guess it was worth it ($399 + $149 + $169 = $717 approximately minus taxes for the 3 things shown in this video - yikes).

      Yes a lot of ground noise and distortion. Unless you buy an audio interface that's powerful enough to power it with an inline amp like the cloud lifter of Dynamite.
      I use the se Electronics DM1 Dynamite for mine. $99 28 db clean gain.
      I already had the Scarlett Solo 3rd gen for my Blue Spark mic.

    Do I need cloudlifter if I am using this with the Focusrite Clarett? When I plug in SM7B with it - it seems to be doing what you described and showed with the gain needing to be maxed out. :(

      Sounds like you'll need the cloudlifter.

    Why didn't you use phantom power when trying it without the cloudlifter? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just curious.

    • @ThaiiTried
      @ThaiiTried 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The shure sm7b stock doesn’t require phantom power. However, when plugging in the cloud lifter, the cloud lifter unit needs phantom power while microphone itself does not

    • @kettnercreative
      @kettnercreative  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phantom power doesn’t have any effect on dynamic microphones like the Shure SM7B.
      But phantom power is required to make the Cloudlifter work.

    I have AT2020 and Scarlet 3rd gen 2i2 and get a very weak singal. I will have to turn the gain up a lot - way over half way and even then the singal is quite small when looking from Audacity. What could be wrong? Is AT2020 just not for Scarlet?

    Awesome Video but I have an question so do you need an software to use it?

    • @vespa731
      @vespa731 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use this without software. Just plug it in. Just make sure your 'recording' peripheral is set to the Scarlett 2i2 (or whatever interface you're using). Note: You'll be hearing non-EQ'd sound with no additional filters. After you mess around with it, you'll most likely want to take advantage of some of your DAW's EQs and filters to make your audio recordings sound even sweeter!

    What type of software for the Mac you used to record the video? Just curious. Very informative video. I’m jumping from yeti x to your exact demo gear. Should have most of it tomorrow except for the cloudlifter which was ordered after the fact :)

      The software is called Logic Pro.

    Can you phantom power the mic without the cloudfire amp? Like connect the mic direct on the scarlet and hit the 48v phantom power?
