    I learned much of what you showed. Bike on its side with drain plug down. You may not quite get a full 60cc out. To help reach that amount, best to do in summer when gearbox temp is high. Rest bike on its side for 30 minutes with syringe in place. After oil has settled to one side then start sucking it out. Double check. To fill I turn bike to other side with drain plug facing up. Once oil is in it does need to burp due to air in the box. I too have the aluminum version. Changing oil is a small price to pay. I use Phil Wood grease for the tiny planetary gears under the cap. Good idea to clean out old grease first.

    Next time start with the syringe half full of air. Connect it. Push the air in to the gearbox to pressurise it, then suck out some oil. Do the opposite for filling it up. Force some oil in and then suck some air out and repeat til the syringe is empty.

    There's a hole at the bottom of the gearbox to drain the oil. You can't get the oil out using the hole on the side. Watch Pinion's oil change video!

      There's a difference between the aluminium housing and magnesium housing for the P-Line (Alu) and C-Line (Magnesium). I have an aluminium housing which hasn't a drain at the bottom. Only the magnesium version (C-line)

    Looks similar oil colour to an Alfine 11 first change. Cannot comment on the Rohloff as it is over 13 years ago since I did the first oil change lol.

    Ya know maintenance is much easier when you follow the correct procedure, in this case, you're trying to vacuum the gear oil out through the fill hole. Why?

    I suspect probably liqui moly is producing gearbox oil for pinion. And rohloff too?

    Why not as a explosion engine a drain hole at the bottom and a filling hole on top?

    Looks like moly grease (molybdenum) on the shifter mechanism. I think most of that color in the old oil was probably some of that mixing into the oil.
    I see you putting in 3 times as much oil as you got out. Is that to be expected? Gearboxes don't burn oil, they leak it. So since there was no leak, do you think maybe the factory didn't put in the right amount in the first place?

      Actually, I was shocked when I saw the colour of the oil in comparison to the new oil. It could be an effect of moly grease. I saw a lot of tutorials of a Pinion oil change but that was my first one. It is necessary to refill the gearbox with 60ml new oil. Next winter I will buy more oil and will do a gearbox flushing, so we can see if I can pump the same volume out as I fill in. I assume that the gearbox was filled with the right amount of oil but I didn’t check.

      @@hagmag It is odd that so little oil came out. I would assume that it wasn't correctly filled by Pinion rather than there being a leak - you would see it if that much oil was leaking out. The grease looks perfectly normal. The oil colour is normal too - on my bike I found it was dark on the first oil change (presumably because the gears are bedding in) but almost clear on subsequent annual oil changes. As you found, you have to get the drain hole as low as possible. Laying the bike on its side with the back wheel on a chair works well.

      Thanks for sharing your experience! I will try with the chair next time

    I just watched the bike company Co-Motion do an oil change on a bike and they maybe got 20mls of dirty oil out and they push a full 60mls of new oil in. I don't get it.
    I'll have to call them tomorrow because I have two Co-Motion bikes both with gates and Pinion. They also put the cover back on without putting new grease on those little gears or whatever they are. Im sure the guy in the video above did.

    Ive watched lots of vids now on this oil change and never see anyone get the 60ml out. From what I understand pinion says regardless of what comes out put the full 60ml of new oil in. This does not make much sense to me. What happens when your on your third oil change and your not getting 60ml of dirty oil out but you keep putting 60ml of new oil in?
    I did a oil change two nights ago and maybe got 20ml of dirty oil out. I had the bike on its side and was was spinning the cranks and would get oil out each time but after about half hour of doing this I was done. Seems like they need to have a better way and where is this oil going?

    • @hagmag
      @hagmag  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a very good question: „Where is the oil going?!“ Honestly, I don‘t know why I can‘t get the full 60 ml out of the gearbox with this pump method. But I will try to flush the gearbox next time and will share this experiment as well

    Great video. Can you tell me the make of the grease you used?

    • @hagmag
      @hagmag  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I use a low temperature no-name gear grease. Unfortunately I did not find an exact description or required grease on the pinion manual or website

    Should you really be putting grease in there.?

    • @hagmag
      @hagmag  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you should. As it says in the user manual from Pinion „Planetary gear should be lubricated with resin-free,
      adhesive EP grease.“

    If you put more in then you got out from it, the gearbox will leak

    • @hagmag

      I drove 200 miles already with the new oil in. There are no leaks since then. Did you experience a leak with your Pinion gearbox? I think it is easy to get new sealings or a refresh when you sent it to the pinion headquarters

      pinion says regardless of what you pull out put the full 60ml of new oil in.
