When the customer picked up the car told me he had actuators in the back because he had already taken it to another shop to find out what went wrong. Good thing he came to SMA before losing a few hundred dollars in parts not needed. Or better yet good thing the other shop didn't put them on and have to eat the cost of them for being wrong in their diag! Let this be a reminder to keep it simple folks. If something worked before you touched it, it's likely something you did. Accidents happen, but double check your work and use a little logic. Could an actuator have failed? Oh for sure. Stuff happens I know, just take the time to make sure before you unload the cannon. -Cheers!
I love the idea that a shop would eat the cost of parts if they didn't fix the issue, round here you would be charged anyway and it's your problem if it didn't fix it.

Greetings from Tenterfield NSW Australia where we have just entered a snap lockdown - plenty of indoor time to catch up on SMA videos... Really enjoy your videos especially the diagnostic ones. I hope you realise how much pleasure you bring to us all in these troubled times. Stay well and soldier on.
Even more pro tip With the tape trick, use a 17mm 3/8s fits perfectly in the end of your finger and you can take your drill on a low speed to put the tape on the socket and don’t you have to sit there manually taping the socket
I always used a short piece of 3/8 polypropylene tubing. I could hold the ends of the tube between thumb and forefinger if I needed to unspool more than an inch or two of tape in quick order... also, the Super 88 was the only tape I'd ever use. Eric's correct about it being the best!
@@greatnortherntroll6841 I’m from a Benz dealer never actually heard of that tape but for our wiring jobs we have to make it look factory as per Mercedes Benz.. so we just use the tape they supply us but it’s the best I’ve used. Basically feels and looks like hockey tape
Does Benz use the self shrinking tape? That stuff is amazing but equally scary. Once the backing film is removed there’s some chemical activated witchcraft that makes it self heat shrink. Folklore has it that if you wrap your finger it will cut the circulation off.
I actually took the tape tip and modified it. I put my "mini roll" socket on my drill and and spun it slowly to get the tape on and all I had to do was hold the tape roll! Great video, great presentation!
Two things, 1: why four cables going to a two pin connector 2: with the tape and socket trick, if you put a short extension in the socket it would be much easier to wind the tape onto it. Hope Mrs O doing OK after her procedure. 👍👍
Told my Mrs she looked smokin this am, as she headed out, she said you ain’t gettin nothin til that bathroom floor is fixed. Oh well. Nice job Mr O, as ever.

I’m a technician for Honda in California, very common problem with DIYers, that cable does NOT need to be disconnected to do your rear brakes , simply loosen the bracket from the brake line if you feel you don’t have enough movement from the caliper , typical fix is new harness which runs about less than 80 dollars, not too expensive and not too bad to replace! Just a few 12 mm bolts
I'm an ME and am not sure why they did it that way but in another comment Trey Cook surmised that it may have been to allow for the connector to just come apart rather than break if the caliper was dropped. Sounds plausible to me.
Hey Eric O., Nice diagnosis and repair job. I am a retired E.E., and that repair was nothing short of genius. The connector was probably engineered this way to prevent a broken connection due to vibration. I like the Old style manual hand pull E-brakes on my Hondu Element. Push button shifting, push button E-brakes, etc. are trendy but a PITA when things go wrong. I just got smarter b/c of your video. Thanks, Eric. Keep Wrenching!
Hey guy, I know this video is a few years old but you saved me some trouble. I had the same thing happen to me, I saw the wires were out and couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t go back in. Had to pull the other half of the pin from the connector and put it on the wire. Cheers!

It isn't so much the complexity increasing prices - it is inflation. My first car, a 1970 Mercury Capri, cost me $2790 out the door. My mother bought a house in Hayward, California for $15,000 the year before - Zillow estimates the "value" at more than $600K now. The practice of "replacing hardware with software" actually lowers costs a lot. Electronics are pretty cheap to make and software costs only whatever the development and maintenance costs are. Ten or ten million... same costs.
@@flagmichael actually the average cost of a vehicle is significantly more today than in the 70s even taking inflation into account. Atleast from when I've researched it. However, cars are much much safer today.
The funny part is the “automatic parking brake” actually started waaaay back there as “hill start assist” for vehicles with manual transmissions. Essentially if you rolled backwards on a hill it applied the parking brake. Kept people from burning up clutches for the most part. Some Class 8 trucks still have this system, works the same - applies the rear axle & trailer air brakes to keep from rolling backwards.
@@rpp1348 the AMT in your Volvo still has a clutch so the hill start is still effective at saving it. No torque converter in a class 8 trans, it’s an “Automated Manual Transmission”. Some now even have a dual clutch setup. The XE package from them I think is one that the dual clutch AMT is an available option.
VW's variant of the hill start assist is based off of not releasing the brake fluid pressure, and is available on cars with mechanical parking brakes and electronic.
As my 2017 Acura ILX is out of warranty now, there will be a lot of small jobs done by me. I'm just glad cars of about the same age are coming into your shop so that I can get a heads up on what to watch for..
That’s some funny logic. As others have mentioned, this connector is quite likely to prevent damage that would otherwise occur on a simpler connector that may be robust in itself, but would strain the wire instead. EE…but clueless of mechanics?
Hay Eric o very interesting, good to see that you repaired it most people would have just replaced the lead . It’s the difference between a service person and a good mechanic.

EE: These old style connectors are pretty bullet proof, let's make it complicated to justify the EE designation. It'll work just fine.....until it doesn't, then we can sell a new harness.
You are amazing for this :D I'm going to be changing my rotors for the first time soon and my biggest fear is dropping the caliper and stretching the break line or the e-break motor line. Knowing that this is a possibility for a fix is such a sigh of relief lol. Thank you!

Your patience is astounding. Thanks for the tips on the connectors and the tape trick. Good stuff. And I regrettably can relate to forgetting about how you did it the last time. Frustrating!
I don’t know about the american domestic cars but if you work on euro you definitely CAN’T have this patience, probably is patient because he knows is Live 😁😁
Last one I saw was the Backwards pad. Only 1 out of 8 was backwards! CLASSIC DIY!
When the light fell it gave me flashbacks. Back in the day the light had a bulb that would go out Every Time it fell. Even the heavy duty ones.

Even more pro tip With the tape trick, use a 17mm 3/8s fits perfectly in the end of your finger and you can take your drill on a low speed to put the tape on the socket and don’t you have to sit there manually taping the socket
Not if you have man-hands. I need 24mm. LOL
Eric. Thanks again for a great video. Because of your videos I no longer pass up the electrical pages in my repair manual.
I actually took the tape tip and modified it. I put my "mini roll" socket on my drill and and spun it slowly to get the tape on and all I had to do was hold the tape roll! Great video, great presentation!
Two things,
1: why four cables going to a two pin connector
2: with the tape and socket trick, if you put a short extension in the socket it would be much easier to wind the tape onto it.
Hope Mrs O doing OK after her procedure.
👍👍
Told my Mrs she looked smokin this am, as she headed out, she said you ain’t gettin nothin til that bathroom floor is fixed. Oh well. Nice job Mr O, as ever.
Hey Eric - we also have a South Main Auto clone of our own here in Springfield illinois, its called Verns Auto Repair. Family owned, great shop, capable mechanics, fair prices and honest as the day is long. Only place I take my truck.
Just want to say “ thank you” for taking the time to make these videos. They are tremendously helpful for a do it yourself person like me. I’m buying a shirt to show my appreciation for your valuable knowledge that you willingly share.
Thanks for providing quality entertainment for people who love watching things getting fixed. Just enough OCD to make my day.
Aside from being a wonderful mechanic and truly customer-focused, Eric O is *such* a hopeful romantic!
Hopeful! 🤣
Just yesterday Eric I was frustrated with two roles of electrical tape having near zero adhesion. I thought I needed to search out a quality tape, and here you show Scotch Super 88. I'm buying a few roles quickly. Thanks for the "unsponsored" product plug!
Glad I could help!
Eric, the only part required was using your grey cells, thank you for sharing
Once again Erric O proves himself to be a true Master Technician. No guessing or swapping parts. Erric does real-time logical diagnostic work and identifies the problem at hand as a true professional should. Here’s to you sir, where I am located I can’t even get local shops and dealers to be honest about changing my fluids much less quality repairs. We need a million more like you 😎
Always a pleasure taking these trips with you Eric!!! Thanks for posting. I’m glad it’s not just me finding these little nuances with the over-engineered junk. Lol
Unfortunately many techs think it’s like baseball…. If I succeed 3 of 10 times I am awesome!!!!!!!
You Eric are one of the best at your thinking your way through a problem. Thanks for making us keep the faith
That looked like a pretty high quality contact. Nice weather seals, even has several layers of them. You should send a bungee cord back with the car, so the guy has one to hang the caliper in, for next time.
The Japanese make nice wiring harnesses. Cuts out most of the faults their competitors cars get.
I like the way you make a comment about Mrs I when she walks by. She sounds very precious! Good on you mate! Ian from Australia.❤️
Mrs o
Thanks for the video! Your troubleshooting techniques are top notch. I’ve been teaching industrial electrical maintenance for many years and your way of finding the root cause of the problem is one of the best IMO. We need an auto shop like yours in northeast Indiana. Keep up the good work!
Been a mechanic for many years and still learn new stuff every day including from your channel I’m thinking about starting my own channel so we can all work together to be better
“A league of their own” ha ha great quote!!
Fantastic memory for previous issues boss!!!
Love the channel. Been a backyard mechanic for years 😂 I’ve learned a lot of computer diagnostics from you as well as many other slick, quick tips👍👍
You da man
Man you just saved me hundreds! Thank you for the informative step by step video!
I love the “ enhance, enhance “ every time you zoom in!
Reminds me of the ridiculousness of the old crime shows on tv.
You’re a naturally funny dude!
Love this channel
Edit:
I’m an electrician by trade and yes
Super 88 is the best tape on the market, bar none!
And use your 10mm?
That’s ridiculous. Nobody actually has a 10 mm. They are all lost
"There's no crying in baseball" is from the movie, "A League of Their Own." Great troubleshooting and explanation as always.
Every DIYers nightmare - a simple job gone bad with some bizarre, inexplicable hiccup like this. Good info to put in my mental file cabinet. Thanks as always, Eric.
never seem to stop amazing me with your desire to find what's wrong and figure out how to fix it. the connector issue was great just figuring out how it works an connects all the intricate things needed to reconnect a connector that had pulled apart. Super "Come on Baby" !!!! then remember you had encountered same situation before. absolutely the best stuff to find out what's wrong no matter what it is .
I think you need an SMA "Come on, Baby!" T-shirt.
As well as enhance.. enhance.., unenhance.. unenhance.., there's yer problem lady!, Whoa fella!, What the thunder is going on.., son of a--, free tip Friday, whoa man down
@@adventureoflinkmk2 Don't forget "jiblets"
My vote is for 'multi-piece funk'
Thank you for the verbal articulation of the problem
Absolute favorite channel 💪 learned soooo so much from you man
I’m a technician for Honda in California, very common problem with DIYers, that cable does NOT need to be disconnected to do your rear brakes , simply loosen the bracket from the brake line if you feel you don’t have enough movement from the caliper , typical fix is new harness which runs about less than 80 dollars, not too expensive and not too bad to replace! Just a few 12 mm bolts
I’m an EE and have no idea why someone would do that. Actually, an ME probably designed the connector. JUST SAYING!! ;)
@@crisprtalk6963 ;)
I'm an ME and am not sure why they did it that way but in another comment Trey Cook surmised that it may have been to allow for the connector to just come apart rather than break if the caliper was dropped. Sounds plausible to me.
Ur a special guy!!Love how u approach every job.Great channel.
"Hey I did my brakes and now everything is broke". Story of my life there fella.....story of my life.
You are correct sir! Alan Jackson did "Remember When", excellent song as well as excellent troubleshooting!
Ivan would be proud NO parts required.
Customer states I changed my brake pads and the E-Brake light is on.(( Leaves out the I droped the mamajama)) lol.
Customer did a Scotty Kilmer.....dropped the brake caliper and let it hang by the hose!
Hey guy, I know this video is a few years old but you saved me some trouble. I had the same thing happen to me, I saw the wires were out and couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t go back in. Had to pull the other half of the pin from the connector and put it on the wire. Cheers!
Keep up the good work love seeing the enhancements aka close ups don’t always need to be in the frame to narrate, but I know close ups are not always practical while applying your skills
Reminds me of a chacing a open circ. On a 2004 trailblazer I got 2nd for free, IAT circuit opened. (I was not experienced in working cars like this) my father in law says "follow that wire" shit sure enough off the main lume 6 feet away, wired snapped or chewed off... Don't make a mess out of a ant hill, do the easy first, it's usually that!
"There's no crying in baseball" is from A League of Their Own.
Really
Great job Mr. O I learned a lot how to diagnose and troubleshoot a lot of electrical stuff that I didn’t know before the watching your channel and also watching Rainman Ray’s Repair to both of you do the best videos and I love watching them first thing in the morning makes my day a lot brighter keep up the good work
I wish they would stop overcomplicating everything and lower the cost of vehicles. Ridiculous, Great job though. That was a tricky one.
When you need a clip to hold the pins in the connector, it's over-engineered. Some of these newer connectors were designed by committee.
That's just one , one connector on a vehicle with many
Off work with a bad foot... You are giving me my work thoughts... Thanks
My 2015 Volvo day cab has this system with an auto trans… kinda redundant.
@@panzerveps My Challenger works that way as well. Uses the ABS system to keep the rear brakes applied until there is a second or 2 of throttle input.
Studebaker had that in the early 60's. They called it the hill-holder clutch.
As my 2017 Acura ILX is out of warranty now, there will be a lot of small jobs done by me. I'm just glad cars of about the same age are coming into your shop so that I can get a heads up on what to watch for..
I'm an EE and think it was simply a poor choice of connector by Honda due to the increase in points of failure. Make the solution simple and robust.
Morning everyone. This should be a good one *sips coffee*
Sips on protein shake as I enjoy my day off from the shop while watching sma work on cars in the shop🤣😌
Diagnosis, Key in the game. Well Done Sir.
Well now if that isn’t just the most eff’d up connector I’ve ever seen.
I wanted to say great job on this video. You saved me a whole lot of time when I ran into the same issue with the EPB. I was ready to order parts until I looked at the harness you pointed out. Fixed it for a total of 5 minutes and couple cents worth of electrical tape. Thank you.
Thank you!
“and he called me a talking pile of pig shit!” A league of their own! Good movie!
Always good watching Eric O fixing things 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😎🏴
Full Russian fix. 😂 A nod to my other favorite internet mechanic, Ivan. 👍
Don't forget about Scanner Danner
The tip with the tape on the 10mm socket... I learned it from you and I used it when working on my son's car. Thanks.
So...now I know where all my 10 mils went...in Eric O's electrical tape.
Just think of it as a car repair tax.
Thanks for being an honest technician
"Remember When" is indeed Alan Jackson. Great song!
Thanks for this video, I just had the same issue, changed my rear brake pads and all those warning lights came on and I couldn’t find anything helpful until your video and i noticed my terminal came lose so I followed step by step and it fixed my issue. Thanks again.
