Sorry but until buyers start costing Copart money by rejecting misdescribed vehicles, nothing will change.
I've bought several in recent months and you never get any joy back from them which is tedious when you aren't allowed or it's too far to view the car prior so we take a gamble....
Agreed, the problem with not backing the cars that are becoming all too frequently misrepresented by Copart, is that people trying to break in to the business of repairing and selling cars will suffer because no one returns the vehicles. Gents, start returning these cars that come in not as described. Think of the people who come after you.
They wouldn't collect my car they refused.
Just stop buying from them @@jasonhardy8383
Lin is a 12volt system that generally has one master node that can power 15 slaves. Which will be why you are getting a load of other faults on different lin systems. You need to check for a 12volt feed into the master node. That will be your first point of checking.
LIN means Local Interconnect Network. It is the network running in the car that connects all the modules. There seem to be a break in that network and therefore you get faults from all the unavailable modules on that network. No idea where to start but maybe a module in the network chain is unplugged?
Thank you 🙏
Hi guys. Just to add that Diagnosed Dan's technical site subscription is really worth your time. He runs his own workshop in Holland and solves issues on vehicles that dealership s etc have given up on. He has now opened up a Technical Database which the trade contribute to. They do also have a phone Tec support line. It all started because he was spending more and more time on the phone helping the trade out instead of working. I note that another subscriber has mentioned this as well. Hope you get there with it soon 👍🏼
Copart will continue abusing their position until a great number of buyers get together and hold copart accountable for their actions, adding additional damage to customers vehicles and the misrepresentation of vehicles, it just isn't good enough. VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE, IT SHOULDN'T BE TOLERATED
Wouldn't have taken it off the back of the truck if it's not as described, About time people started demanding Vehicles as Advertised from ConPart.
Diagnose Dan, right up his street. Definitely a comms or power issue you’ll possibly require source what protocol communicates to all the modules and to find the master module, work from there. Some have said, could be one wire, loose negative, or power disconnect. All the modules are good then get your back probe out and continuity check everything, that or scope if the issue corrupt comms. If it’s wires then could be a lot of time .
Copart have pulled your pants down on this I think.
They’re getting a truly bad name for not declaring or hiding issues when selling cars. They give a whole new meaning to buyer beware.
Rob/Chris, strip out the back seats and carpets and see what the little varments have chewed, sounds like a wiring issue to me, or send it back to Copart they shouldn’t keep getting away with misrepresentation, you paid top dollar for this car. Best of luck, great content, can’t wait for the next one.
Not as described, non-runner & yuck, rodent damage, with urine & faeces, that's a straight reject & money back. Poor judgement on this one guys.
@@wirdy1 more bad luck than poor judgement seeing as they didn’t know about any of the things you listed
Time for the trading standards to get involved with copart, on quite a few of recent purchases of yours they’ve not sold as advertised, hopefully you’ll be able to do something with this one good luck guys,ps never seen Chris so despondent on a car before
I dont think trading standards can do anything. As the cars are sold as salvage. Its not really the same as buying a vehicle from a dealer. It is wrong that they constantly miss lead people. But its down to buyers to reject the cars etc. Start causing them costly problems to force them to make changes
I know you took a known good LIN module out of the other car and that didn't work, but did you try putting the suspect LIN module in the good car and see if it worked. A different module may need to be programmed into the car. If the suspect one doesn't work in the other car, then the one from that probably wont work in this one.
Send it back guys, not sold as advertised
Not as described. Surely Copart are liable. You need to be refunded and they should come and get it. If they don’t the bad publicity will do them no good at all. All the time they get away with it they will do it all the more. Good luck, get well Chris.
That car is dreadful.
To advertise is as a runner is plain misrepresentation, Copart need to sort themselves out.
Any other business…..the lawyers would be on it for mis representation
Hi guys. Reject the car as not described or get a few grand knocked off it! Best of luck! 🤞
The fuse box on the vehicle battery supplies the front right power distribution box using a battery cable with terminal 30 on the connection for the positive battery cable.
A relay for terminal 30B is installed on the front right power distribution box found at the A-pillar in the footwell. This relay is activated by the LIN power distribution box which you swapped around. Take a look at the relay to see if that’s working. Quite a few fuses on the front box as well so check those too.
Personally I would send it back it’s not as described your time is to valuable to waste time on this car.
Anyone above Chris’s pay grade must work for NASA!
The only RATS in that car that have been are the CONpart lot
The only thing id say about not sending it back to CoPart is they they will continue to take money on cars not as described........they need telling
Send it back Guys. I'd take the "World of pain" return to CoPart instead of "playing with it".
Return the car because it is not as described or get some money back.
The difference in price for a run and drive and a non runner would be a nice start.
LIN is local interconnected network, it's a kind of CAN network but slower rate of transfer for lesser systems that don't need a fast rate of transfer. Kind of
It sounds like the rats have chewed wires connecting the cars network(LIN) to modules causing all the codes. See if you can find where the modules are .I would strip the interior, Good luck!
LINbus is in simple form, BMWs version of a control network (like CANbus), it’s essentially the control method for a network of devices, likely starting at the Body Control Module then expanding out like a web across the rest of the car (ECU, seat modules, airbag, roof cluster, doors, telematics etc.)
Each device that has values that the car needs to know about (sensors, modules like the seats etc.) will be a device or node on that LINbus (network).
I’m sorry i don’t have the solution, maybe try and disconnect all the rear modules or maybe near where water could possibly have got in, then scan to see if more come back (just incase 1 module or sensor is causing a comms issue on the network causing none to be detected)
Otherwise maybe trying to find an overview wiring diagram of the car then marking which modules are missing on the scan and which are there to maybe narrow down which section of wiring could be damaged.
Love your content, hope it’s easy resolved!
Once again Copart have ignored their duty of care to advertise items correctly and truthfully! It appears to me they want your cash but cannot be bothered to check things are correct as advertised. While I understand you don’t want to rock the boat they do need to be held to account.
Have you checked the LIN signal with a waveform buffer measurement tool to see where the signal is breaking down. The rear fuse box could of got water in it hence a loss of signal. Geat a auto sparky out to it
What I've learnt today is to never deal with copart
I suspect that you will need the bumper on and connected. LIN (local Interface Network) = nightmare. It is a single wire system, so a break anywhere will be causing this. I would also be looking around where your rodents have been foraging.....
LIN is a network protocol used on modern vehicles roughly equivalent to CAN.
You've got the legal on your side, guys. It's not as described, copart have sold another lemon. See it fad too often on other accounts around the world that copart are in presence.
Get well, Chris.
Copart strikes again 😮
In VW there is a central gateway module under the rear seats. Think of it like a central checker that all the other modules connect to and then it tells the BCM all is good. In Mercedes there is one in the front dash and one in the boot. I suspect the latter is the case in the BMW. You’ll need to take out the seats and carpets and trace all the wires in the main CANBUS channel (normally big black truncking) running to the front of the car. There will either be a broken wire or a damaged module, my guess is a wire in one of the modules under the seat (fuel module springs to mind)
Leptospirosis, you can catch it from rat urine, watch out. And I don’t think you waffle on, great video as usual.
LIN Local Interconnect Network...I think, maybe try a new battery? I might be wrong! Copart hmmm!. Thanks as usual guys..
Rob i have a jaguar f pace with rear end damage the car had no power turned out a fuse on top of the battery like a fuse pack i replaced the whole fuse pack and bingo started up im not sure about the bmw but worth taking a look at the higher voltage fuses hope this may help you good luck hopefully you can get it running
Copart should show a video of it running when they post the pictures etc
They usually have one of the dash with the rpm clearly showing
If you watch the video, Rob said there was a picture of it running. The rats have likely got to this one after
@@jimmyjt16 in fairness, that’s what I think, but it happened on Copart Watch, so it their problem, not Rob and Chris’s. SEND IT BACK LADS
I’d definitely plug all the broken stuff back together as best you can and take it from there sounds like a missing link a network connection, newer BMWs are a nightmare for this stuff now
As someone with experience with mice nesting within the workings of supermarket-sized fridges, they would not only cause problems by gnawing through wiring but frequently cause electrical malfunctions by urinating around components.
Find the ground wire for the module and continuity test it to the car body if that checks out I would imagine one of the canbus wires is damaged between the ECU's
If the Rats chewed the back seat badly, I would remove the front seats, check the wiring under them, and check for droppings behind the dashboard area.
Whole interior has to be ripped out and checked
My money is on a leak in one of the wires and the smoke has escaped from the system. You will need to get some new smoke from the stealership fill up the wires again and fix where the original smoke escaped.
Confirm that your LIN module is good by trying it in the other car
Hi lads, so sorry for you're headache. I'am sure you've got a thousand brains working on this one and routing for you. Remember an american channel the chap having a similar problem and it was the telematics box, but as you say something has disrupted coms. I do watch TH-camr Rob at RMS diagnostics and wondered if he'd help. (Just up the road from you) Good luck.
I think Chris hit it about 14 mins into the video with the fault "LIN distribution box actuator wire terminal 30b line disconnection" test the wire from terminal 30b for continuity
Copart getting shady with there descriptions
This is a Local Interconnect Network, which is a single wire data line.
Module under centre console supplies several different modules could be worth a look. If I was a mouse I'd love that as my house...
I had a mate with a Volvo that was written off due to mouse ingress. It was eventually traced to under the centre console where even after the loom was changed it still developed faults. The little buggers were still in the heating ducts chewing away even after weeks of being worked on. Get a CAT Scan. Good luck.
This is a strange one. When I was buying cars ,motorcyles & motorhomes from Copart. The rule was if vermin had been in the vehicle . It had to be a Cat B breaker.
I'd return it or money of that car lads their doing this alot lately they make enough on their fee's and now trying to bump up prices on cars greed
Rats have been under dashboard and chewed the wiring loom
Second thoughts, the lin sounds like it's another type of canbus system, so it could be just one wire that's preventibg everything else working
It will either be so simple you don't believe you've missed it or be so complicated you would never have found it
Good luck though 👍
Great video, as always, boys. Learning all the time. Nothing that can't be sorted. Cheers.
lin is a minor form of can system, normally just controls mirrors, cameras, seats etc, nothing in that system USED to interfere with running, but i am a few yrs behind on BMW lin systems...
disconnect all the tailgate wiring [ at multiplugs in the rear 1/4s hopefully], sounds like lin is shorted out on 1 wire, shutting down entire network. you may possibly need "signal injector" diag kit [hi-tec low power safe power probe]
I'm not a machanic, but have you tried kicking and swearing at it. It may not work, but you'll feel better 😅
I’m a mechanic and can vouch for this, it always helps me 😅
The yard looks like the BMW owners meet 😂
😂
Just a guess, but the immobilizer can prevent the ignition from turning on. I wonder if it has a ghost fitted or similar anti theft
Good luck lads
Should not have let him unload it when it didn't start
Then it goes back and you have a 6 month arbitration with Copart trying to get a refund.
How did they get it on the lorry? especially being on the top, too much of an angle for the fork lift I would think?
They obviously knew it wasn't running or it was driving onto the transporter. Could the driver shed any light to help?
I understand Copart handles a lot of cars, but that is awful someone should have noticed something, seems a bit fishy, but I have faith you will turn it around, once Chris is back to full health
linbus is similar to canbus but a lower speed communication, it generally communicates between low end modules such as seats and HVAC.
Think you may need a better scan tool with the topology of vehicle ecu's to help find this fault. Does look like a rat has chewed through the 12v signal wire on a lin network cable. Topology should show you the system layout, ie DME lin module - battery sensor- shutter vents ect. First module after dme do all module on that lin circuit show a fault if not it could be a chewed wire between the module that comunicates and the module that does not.
Take the seats and carpets out you know that ratty has some big teeth so have a look where you can't see would be my next step just to eliminate further problems or damage to the wiring loom good luck lads
Gotta get something back. cant let them mug you off like that
Wild guess wiring to the fuel pump , as that’s probably where all that rodent damage was , and knocked out other feeds
Might pay to remove the back seat perhaps there's a loom under the carpet the mouse has chewed through? Aussie Graham.
The biggest rats are copart themselves
I'd bet it's an earth wire been chewed and affecting all those circuits you mentioned, interior light, mirrors etc. I think all the seats and carpet and interior trims need to come out to check wiring, especially around that back seat / boot area where those rats have clearly been
As others have said. Send it back Copart are taking the mick.
Hi Rob and Chris, CAN & LIN are communication around the car, your definitely going to need an auto electrician I would say, as could either be easy or a quite involved fault. Shame rats or the like have been in there, to be fair would copart have even looked inside the car after pics etc done..?? Whatever the car looks a great buy for the channel.. Alex.
I’ve watched a few salvage videos and BMWs. One thing that they all had issues with was where the engine wouldn’t turn over. The issue was that all the sensors on the rear had to be wired up. These can contain certain sensors that stop the car from being started if not connected.
Worth a try
First thing I'd be looking at is all the cables etc in the damaged area inc number plate lights ..check everything sound like cable trapped damaged ....if it was ok before crash gotta be in that zone ...
I can point you in the right direction, copart.
Hello Rob and Chris, great video and a nice car.have you tried the battery, with things keep coming up with the dash.fingwrs crossed you sort this problem out to get the car running.
I wouldn’t buy anymore cars from copart guys coz it is not as described and they don’t care at all, remember the Audi q2 u bought that was flood damage and it was like a swimming pool in the car and u kicked up hell and got your money back that’s what I would do in this case. Get your money back guys
Return it, sold as a runner, its their problem.
Poor Chris get well soon buddy
LIN is local interconnect network and whatz probably happened is copart have lifted the bootlid after the damage and the LIN cable has been caught or shorted putting the car into sleep mode
Lin is a single wire serial communication network. Could be a single short to ground somewhere...
and although Chris has checked for 12V at the LIN distribution module, has he checked for a good ground there, rather than just putting his black probe onto the metalwork.
Personally I enjoy these misdiscribed cars it give you the opportunity to teach watchers you diagnostics skills. A virus will have to run its course anti biotics wont kill the virus all you can do is treat the symptoms.
Logic is that it was running going in to copart ,remove all rear seats and carpets to check wiring.tail gate open rats got in later down the line.hope it helps
LIN = Local Interconnect Network
It’s a protocol that links components.
It looks like you haven’t removed the rear seats, your likely to find the chewed wire around there
Check the grey green wires or grey blue wires for the LIN controls maybe see if you can manually take it off the handbrake and put it in neutral foot break on to try starting.. Get well soon Chris 👍
Check the module under the centre console lots of wires too.
I would take that back to copart rob, they done you like a kipper mate
Absolutely scandalous of Copart. Shocking behaviour.
Ehh. They had pictures of it running when it came in so it was OK then. I can't blame them for not inspecting every car on the way out as well. But, I would have a chat about a credit.
Send it back
The main thing wrong with it is being a BMW.
You're bang on with that one my friend. I think they're over rated, over priced and a complete load of junk. I've rebuilt BMW engines less than 50k on them and they've failed because of bad design mainly.
I was thinking that. The old Alpina was in the background looking very cool, but those days are gone. BMW of today is just catastrophic in the engineering decisions. Everything is done stupidly and will grenade itself and cost loads and loads of money
Surely you must be able to get some money back on this one, or send it back for a full refund as not as listed , electrics are a right nightmare on these new models , also could it have a ghost ?
Try the unit you swapped out from the other car in the other car! If if doesn't work maybe everything is damaged by reverse polarity, if it does then all is not lost.
I'd have bypassed the fuse box just out of pure curiosity, considering the rear end has been hit quite badly and the fuse box is located there, I'd also presume that exact fuse box would control the modules
With that many faults, it has to be an chewed wire, most likily an earth, sorry guys, no easy answer on this, take out front seats and centre console, then test each circuit is there a secondary fuse box, or junction point as its been rear ended, check for a loose or trapped wire where the damage is, check the battery voltage, possible substute another battery off the other car,
Almost sure you have a short that is causing no network connection LIN aka CanBus in this new cars.
Basically the modules can't talk with eachother... Check the Body Control Module, should be located behind the glove box
Pine Hollow auto diagnostics could fix it. He normally checks all powers and grounds to the body from the battery putting the positive on the tester and negative to chassis not the same as the ground on the module itself . Could be a broken ground wire inside the insulation caused by the impact maybe . Good luck electrical faults on modern cars are a pain in the arse at the best of times .
Rob you know that Copart have no scruples when they are prepared to ship doctored up salvage e.g. that scrap Lamborghini across the world (US to the UK) to get top money for them when they really should be crushed you know the score.
Copart are a bunch of well we all know......
Rob it's the red box in the boot battery distribution fuse box hopefully there's a fuse blown inside it
There seems to be a link between the lin codes and a wiring box under the passanger seat also a wiring box behind the dash,on forums they are looking for loose or damaged wires! Which would make sense with the rodents.
