  • In this video I have a look at a ladies Subaru that she had at another shop for a brake light problem. They informed her they "jerry rigged" it (or "jury rigged" if you want to be grammatically correct). That's fine if you intend on fixing it the following day or so I suppose. Any how, let's undo the jerry and fix this thing the right way.

About 15 years ago our local Ace Hardware that had been in an old downtown building on main st forever was forced to relocate to a new stand alone “smaller” store on the edge of town by “corporate” The elderly owner was was wandering around in his ACE Vest and saw me looking for something and asked if he could help me. I said yes I can’t find anything in this new store and sullenly he replied me too. ☹️ In the old store he knew where every piece of merchandise was and there was 5 times more floor space there. His daughters run it now and are just as friendly but it’s not the same as the old store.

@@4WDIESEL1 That's what I've been trying to do myself. I will say it sometimes has it's drawbacks however. I do some small engine work as a hobby, and a shop here has had an order of mine waiting for 6 weeks on the control wire to a mower. Ordered the air filter too, on march 5th. Two days ago I picked the air filter up, looked at it and saw it was very clearly wrong (mind you I brought the original piece in upon ordering). After saying "this isn't the right one" I was told that "sometimes they update the designs". Surprising nobody, it didn't fit anything I had. Tried to return it and order a carb kit, got told "that's a 50 dollar mower sold for 150 new." and kicked on down the road for that. "Go online" I was told. All in all, you win some and lose some with buying local.

My guess is, since this is a dual-element bulb, the ground for the brake element some how lost its connection to the ground terminal and was instead connected to the positive terminal of the running light element. So when the brakes were press, it sent power through the brake element into the positive side of the running light circuit.

"Jerry rigged" comes from calling the German soldiers of WWI (and later WWII) "Jerries", in much the same way Brits were called "Tommies", and Americans were called "Joes". The thought was people in crosswalks could see if the driver was applying the brakes. There were wireing kits to tie the front markers to the brake lights. Never caught on but somewhere a fellah is wondering why his front marker / parking come on when the brakes are applied in the 74 chevy he just got from an estate sale !

Had an older Chevy Cavilier that behaved in the most similar way. When ever I stepped on the brakes the interior, dash, headlight and break light would go on. It took me a day to figure it out. It was a dual element brake light that had a bit of solder break free and landed on both elements shorting it out. It was the head scratcher that I never forgot and this was the first thing that came to mind watching this video.

I don't Always Jerry Rig, but when I do it is to fix someone else Jerry Rig. Which is true, last one I did was on a 2009 Nissan Altima, Engine was replaced, and they cut wires to remove and replace. Well, a very young mechanic (if you could call him that) decided to use wire nuts to fix them, which didn't fix anything. long story short I had to find all wires and solder them together. The mechanic was 20 at the time and said he was a Diesel Mechanic, which I asked a few diesel questions which he failed them all.

New York people speak a slightly different language. I've lived in Ohio, Indiana and California and it was jury rigged in all those places. I had a NY roommate in collage who would do it to us every once in awhile. Called hamburger buns "rolls". Nothing like the English guy I saw in a TH-cam vid who called alligator clips crocodile clips!

    • @mostlymoparih5682
      @mostlymoparih5682 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The jerry is still out deliberating awaiting payment before they give their verdict.
I thought the same as you, if something was done poorly it was jury rigged like a jury gets paid off to change the verdict
But according to Daily Writing Tips, jury rigged is what sailors called putting in their backup mast.
Because they were often damaged in storms, sailing ships carried a spare mast called the jury-mast so when they lost their primary mast they jury rigged the mast.
Some people say jerry rigged and that may have come from WWII
The term “jerry rigged” found its footing in World War II. To keep equipment functional toward the end of the war, the axis would often times resort to scavenging for parts. British troops referred to a German as a Jerry. Thus, the term “jerry rigged” was embraced to refer to patchwork jobs.
And then there's Jimmy rigged but that's a story for another day.
      Happy Motoring.

@@keithstudly6071 In Michigan they call cans of soda, pop or soda pop. I can see them calling the buns rolls because when you buy Martins potato buns they call them rolls. In New England they say Hot Dog buns or lobster rolls and it's the same product. You are right, different ways of speaking in different parts of the US. I've heard someone say, this floor needs swept instead of this floor needs to be swept. Some people say Jerr zee instead of New Jersey and that does not come from New Jersey it comes from transplants from New York and has become part of the language in New Jersey over time. The English language is tough to learn because so many words have more than one meaning and some words are different but sound the same way too two to. Wright right rite?

Jury Rigged and Jerry Rigged are used synonymously in the US. During WWII Germany couldn't supply spare parts, because of Allied bombing; so they had to rig their equipment with baling wiring and bubble gum to keep it working. Allied soldiers were often amazed when they saw the deteriorated condition of Germany equipment.
I enjoy watching you logically and methodically troubleshoot issues.
