Tempo is too fast.. mid range should flow effortlessly...no interruption with emphasis on the left hand..which he does well. The tempo would be improved with a definitative..lift ..drop ..to he approach..
He has achieved a perfection, that most pianists will never achieve. This is not an opinion. Its a fact. His Rachmaninoff has the fiery Russian passion that only 2 other pianists were able to capture. Rachmaninoff himself, and Horowitz. Wait another 20 years, this pianist will be the Cziffra and Ricther of the 20th century
This is surely one of the finest interpretations of the current top Rach performers. Lugansky is reknowned for his controlled but powerful technique. He also has a penetrating intellect that helps shape such attractive performances. Just terrific.
The best performance of Rachmaninov in my opinion. It is not only a difficult masterpiece, but also, for a pianist, it is so difficult not to sound as a "picky machine" while playing it. And Nikolai plays it so brilliantly, fluently. With so much strength in the same time. GENIOUS!
Finally someone who brings out all the adventurous dynamic changes, uses perfect rubato, plays clearly audible transitions from one section to the next. The transitions from one section to the next are extremely important and it is a relief to hear someone play them effectively. Power, control, sensitivity, excellent phrasing and voicing.
a bit rushed in certain areas but wholly agree! lovely pedal control! im sure he has perfected by now. my benchmark was Kissin! not a super difficult piece but correct phrasing is very trying.
I am not Russian so not 'biased'. But there definitely is something magical in the Russian pianists, particularly when they play music by Russian composers. This is fantastic!
In Germany it's called the Russian soul. Lugansky on that: "I didn't know it until now, and in Russia they don't speak of a Russian soul either. But if it is written about in the West, perhaps it does exist after all ..."
This might just be the most perfect renditions I have heard. Simply spine tingling and so spot on. Rach is smiling down on this performance. Pure poetry.
@@KV4671 Richter too staccato and fast. So is Rach"s himself. There is a sort of common sense to a lot of music, beyond personal taste. I think it has to do with the chord progressions and the natural mood they evoke.
Nikolai Lugansky is hands-down my favorite pianist right now. I not only love all of his interpretations, but I also love watching him perform. His hands, his body language, and hey, he's not even bad looking either!
Dear Nikolai, you certainly mastered Rachmaninov's Prelude in the greatest of ways. Congratulations young man, you are obviously gifted. Take care and may God bless, protect and keep you in His caring love for ever.
Re Moment Musicaux 4: Before there was speed metal, there was Rachmaninov. This is the hottest, most passionate, fiery, emotionally raw piano piece I've ever heard. It's magic.
Brilliant!!!!! I'm speechless--there just aren't enough adjectives!!! Can't wait to see what Lugansky would do with Concertos Nos. 2 & 3!! (and #1, also, which ought to be played more)-- A born Rachmaninovian!!!
Oneil and her family are no clasaroom or a lot people who has the same thing the bus sometimes did you like 3the other 3way you 3are and 2I and 3the people 3PM 3PM are 3AM 3AM u in this month and you are not cameras and the 5AM has been 555555inches 3PM but it 4PM to 3PM 3but is not my fault 3and it 3was 3 i have more bread because it will not work 3AM well 3rd of all museums and you should 3PM it to
Exquisite playing from Lugansky. Emil Gilels' legendary Moscow conservatory performance have always been a benchmark, on the op. 23/5, but in some ways Lugansky's unique blend of control, power and razor-sharp articulation just wins me over. Outstanding👏👏👏
one of the best interpretations that I´ve ever seen.. I can play this piece for over year, but I still cannot find such a vivid tone in my fingers, such as Lugansky... INCREDIBLE!!! :-)
OMG, what a beast. This video made me buy Rachmaninoff's (who's always been my favourite composer) Complete Piano Collection played by Lugansky. 6 CDs of pure awesomeness. Thank you, capetond, for uploading this. :)
this is my favorite of the rach preludes... i like both lugansky and valentina playing of this... each has their own.... lugansky reminds me a lot of richter... and lisista reminds me of how rach played... but like i said i like both...
Angie Wiranata after hearing Gilel play the no 5 g minor and also no 2 c sharp minor i would agree, better?... it was like "what did i just hear!!" i posted comment on a channel "Gilels attacks the piano like it owes him money." (was quoting the moderator) good one! yes the scheißway i mean steinway is still in debt. if it was bösendorfer the piano would have paid him in advance!" when i finish the post-production on a movie... i might do a digital remaster of both like i did with the delius piano concerto available on my channel Mikael Kenner
I love him when he plays Rachmaninov
And Chopin
The best interpretation i have ever heard...
Excellent, but not quite as exciting or sensual as Ashkenazy's. th-cam.com/video/gXnjX9SnBnc/w-d-xo.html
I like Lugansky’s interpretation of Rach more than Rach’s own interpretation of Rach

I didn't believe this commwnt at the beginning of the video but now I've listened to it I can completely agree with it

"renowned" not "reknowned"
He sings out the inner voices in the middle section of 23/5 better than any other performer I've ever heard.
Listen to Rachmaninoff himself playing that section and you'll change your mind for sure.
Lugansky absolutely shines when he plays Rachmaninoff. My favourite two pieces in one video.. thank you

The above comment refers to the prelude.
jongleurette totally agree.

Esecuzione leggendaria.
Everything about this is perfect. I am sure Rachmaninoff would be pleased!

Excellent version. I really like the tempo he has. One of my favorite versions of one of my favorite piano pieces. Bravo Nikolai
I must've watched this 50 times through the years, and I always come back. Amazing piece and performance.
The best performance I've heard of this prelude hands-down. Majestic playing!
Richters recording of the piece 23 no.5 is better. Still Lugansky is great ! A great master in Rachmaninov.

What a GOLDEN phrasing and BRILLIENT sound!
After Victor Borge he is the best when he plays Rachmaninov. Many thanks!!

Precise and passionate, a great pianist!

It must be delicious to play the piano this way, with all that power and apparent easyness.

He´s an amazing pianist.
A master, especially in rachmaninoff.
The loudest performance I have ever heard and it's awesome just like the spirit of this piece
in love with this piece opus 23 no 5 and it's power.
¡ Impecable, excelente, bravo amado genial pianista Nikolái Lugánsky !!!!
Power full version, correctible interpretation, pury classic music.
I like his interpretation in both pieces,
The melody is very nice,
His harmony is very rich in many parts
