This interpretation is nearly unbeatable and unsurpassable. Everything is perfect. The central section is touching, very sentimental yet carefully weighed and progresses with unfaltering logic. The reprise of section A is also a masterpiece of crescendo and gradual accelerando. The intellectual and emotional understanding he has of this Prelude is truly out of the ordinary. This is Nikolai Lugansky at his very best, ladies and gentlemen.
I have listened to SEVERAL renditions of this piece. When I listened to this version for the first time, I knew right away that it's my favorite. Amazing.
Lugansky has got to be one of the most musical pianists I have ever studied. His melodies are ALWAYS there, and his interpretation of the score is very consistent. Incredible.
I had the chance to see Nikolai performing live, sadly he didn't play this prelude... I'm trying to learn this prelude and right now and it feels so insanely hard, not only to play it with a constant flow but to make it sound intense and full of spirit... I can't even imagine how much dedication and effort Nikolai put into it so he could be able to play this prelude with such a strong, passionate yet clear musicality. I feel like a newborn puppy next to Cerberus whenever I listen to this interpretation...
João Monteiro I don't know how far you are with learning that piece, but from my experience I advise you to first learn all the notes by heart and once you're comfortable with simply playing it I'd start working on the dynamics and intonation.
ThigioBadoni I'm more or less done with it, I havent played it lately because I had to study other pieces for an exam. But all I need to do now is to polish some sections and work on the dynamics, which will take another while, and then i'll be happy with it!
I learnt this piece one year ago, and even though I’ve been very busy with other pieces and exams, I still haven’t finished it by heart, and certain things need polishing, like how I play the central part. Nikolai there did the best job someone could do for this piece.
''I feel like a ghost wandering in a world grown alien. I cannot cast out the old way of writing and I cannot acquire the new. I have made an intense effort to feel the musical manner of today, but it will not come to me.'' Sergei Rachmaninoff
best interpretation i have heard so far. so many hidden details he brings to the forefront in the left hand and in the middle voices. most pianists just bring out the topmost lines in the soprano, or else the recordings were poorly done/ manipulated by the recording engineers...
Прослушал эту композицию в интерпретации всех известных исполнителей. Думал, что Гилельс и Рихтер - вне конкуренции, но Луганский превзошел все ожидания. Его интерпретация, на мой взгляд, удалась лучше всех.
That middle section is so perfectly weighted. The inner voices come out so beautifully and lyrically its incredible. Espicially the middle voice at 1:59
The best version of Prelude no. 5 by far-- so much better than Lang Lang's!! I listen to this at least three times a day and it never gets old. This guy is WAY under appreciated!!
В этом исполнении эта музыка весенняя .... Ручьи, гроза, ветер срывает лепестки с яблонь, расходятся тучи и яркое солнце пронзает землю торжествуя!!! Браво Маэстро!
His interpretations are always so simple, clean, and elegant and full of his exquisite touch and control. He makes everything he plays sound so bloody good.
Lugansky showing his class. I don't agree with everything in the performance (e.g. the lengthened chords at 1.00+ which disrupt the flow in my view), but there's no doubt this is a remarkable performance overall, all the more so for being live. Clean, accurate, sensible, impressive. Great job.
Congratulation. This performance is better than performance of Valentina Lisitsa. I like her, but Nikolai Lugansky is very good, elegant and perfect pianist.
There has never, and I say NEVER been anyone to play this so flawlessly and yet beautifully, especially the middle part. It's simply...heavenly, stary, fiery, choose whatever word pleases you, for me it's all three of them.

Its good but i feel that gilels interpretation was better at showing the theme, this was played too fast.
