I moved to Kent in 1984. I worked firstly in Derek Cadde's, then in Len Stiles, on the High St.. As a musician, I also joined a band led by the young lady who was to become my wife. Her Transit is on the right here at 1:18, parked outside her parents' house on Chelsfield Road - the last one before the fields. She and her mum used to love shopping in the High St and the Walnuts, and we walked the dogs all over the place. Her parents died in the early 2000s and she herself passed only a few years later, after a long and difficult illness. These videos are very precious to me - it is the Orpington of the very year which is a significant 'moment in time' for me. Thank you for this.

Great to hear from you Kevin, I know exactly what you mean by a "moment in time". When I recorded it all those years ago I was aware I was recording history in the making. A video camera (and they were new back then) is a vehicle to seeing an average day as a precious thing. I'm glad I could help a kindred spirit.

My Dad parked his Cortina in Devonshire road, we lived at 51 Broomhill. Wonder where they park the cars for the lane part of Broomhill now, there wasn't that many cars back then.

Old timber yard on the left as you went past the ponds at the priory...the yard used to back onto the ponds, then Jack Palmer's cycle shop on the left and Fabulous Phones on the right, where they sold lots of CB radio equipment and did repairs...aaah the memories

Yes, I remember buying wood there. You had to buy it by "the unit" which was their standard length. Yes and Palmers he always wore a buff workshop coat. And of course Cray Cycles with its row of secondhand BSA Bantams

Was that the place that used to have a sign that read, 'Get your ashphalt here'?!

Hah, when the top of Angleasea road connected to Welllington Road and Lower Road before they put the blocks in.
I used to live at 3 Angleasea Road, dad still lives there.

My dad used to help at the youth club in the old Wellington Rd school. I remember there were dismantled motor bikes all over the floor and hells angel skulls painted on the wall. A lot of the kids from the school moved to Ramsden when Wellington Rd school closed.

@lithic2 I didn't even realise there was a school in Wellington road, I remember the old church near the beginning. My grandad redecorated it back in the early 90s.
      Was the church the school?
