Orpington 1984 video part 2- Driving around Orpington-Perry Hall Rd to Chelsfield Lane

This is a continuation of the previous video, (Perry Hall Rd, Carlton Parade, Sevenoaks Way, St Mary Cray, Chelsfield Lane). More available including Orpington High Street I quite like the cars, especially the bubble car going past Derry Downs.

When video cameras first came out, I thought it would be a good idea to record the local area, This includes Moorfield Road, Elmcroft Road, the old part of the High Street etc. I have more footage of driving around Orpington, subject to demand. Quality is a bit basic as you would ex[pect

      My dad used to help at the youth club in the old Wellington Rd school. I remember there were dismantled motor bikes all over the floor and hells angel skulls painted on the wall. A lot of the kids from the school moved to Ramsden when Wellington Rd school closed.

      @lithic2 I didn't even realise there was a school in Wellington road, I remember the old church near the beginning. My grandad redecorated it back in the early 90s. Was the church the school?

    There was an excellent model shop in the parade with Palmers. I am ashamed to say that we used to nick kits from the display cabinet that used to be on the pavement. Pike's Aquatics was a great shop too as was Cray Motorcycles and Palmer's. Used to get my short back and sides haircut in Andrew's in Chislehurst Road!

    5:28 The pale blue Transit van carries the words 'Sandy Jones & the Honeys', advertising the girls' band that she ran a little before this time. This year - 1984 - I joined her trio as keyboard player, and we gigged for years all over London and the south east. We got together and married, settling in Strood, though often visiting her parents' house here. She passed in 2010, and is much missed by me and our two lovely children. Thank you for this video.

    About 40 seconds in, think I spotted an Austin Princess - red - we had a green one. They didn't seem to last long. Nice little cottages - characterful. The High Street used to be great - there was a good discount book shop which was aways worth a look, and at least one fabric shop. Crumbs, just seen another Princess.

    I moved to Kent in 1984. I worked firstly in Derek Cadde's, then in Len Stiles, on the High St.. As a musician, I also joined a band led by the young lady who was to become my wife. Her Transit is on the right here at 1:18, parked outside her parents' house on Chelsfield Road - the last one before the fields. She and her mum used to love shopping in the High St and the Walnuts, and we walked the dogs all over the place. Her parents died in the early 2000s and she herself passed only a few years later, after a long and difficult illness. These videos are very precious to me - it is the Orpington of the very year which is a significant 'moment in time' for me. Thank you for this.

    • @lithic2
      @lithic2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great to hear from you Kevin, I know exactly what you mean by a "moment in time". When I recorded it all those years ago I was aware I was recording history in the making. A video camera (and they were new back then) is a vehicle to seeing an average day as a precious thing. I'm glad I could help a kindred spirit.

    Next to Greeves furniture shop you can see an old church outline. As far as I can remember that was part of Greeves where you could go and look around. It must have been a old tin chapel long since closed. Jackson and Imms next door was apparently the old fire station, hence the large doors at the side.
