As a Porsche novice I was hoping to find out about the difference between the iteration of the original 911 revisions, up to the G-series and then what the difference is with the drastic, radical 964 (85% new after all!!). Going straight from the original 911 to the 993 was quite the disappointment. :(
I bought my doctor's 1996 Iris Blue 993 C2, after HE had owned it for 10 yrs, with only 19,000 miles. I've had it an additional 10yrs and now she has 56,000. All I've done is change the oil, (various fluids too) and put fuel in it. Bullet proof 6-spd 'manny tranny' and, need I add... always a head-turner!
I think this piece should've been much longer. Instead of jumping from the classic to the 993 to the 991, I would've loved to see the evolution from generation to generation. Frankly, the 911 deserves the screen time. This is a car that fully embodies and proves the worth of the idea of evolutionary change over revolutionary.
991 - Cristiano Ronaldo 993 - Eric Cantona That is how those two generations feels to me - both are great, both in some other ways. Excellent job Porsche as always! :)
I must say, I do miss my 1991, 928. I could fold up wheelchair and fit it in the back. And there was lots of legroom in the passenger seat. Plus it was one of 25 manual transmission cars that was imported each year to the US. It was black with the gray interior. That thing ran on rails, even have 150 mph.
I LOVE the 993, it will be my absolute favorite. A Dark Green 1997 993 911 Turbo 4s would be magical, especially sound. Here are my favorites. 1-993 2-996 3-991 4-997 5-964 6-930 7-911 classic. ALL ARE AMAZING
The 993 is my favorite as well. Best balance between the older feel and sound of the 911 while still having the more modern look to it. It's hard to tell from this video but they are tiny compared to the 991.
I couldn't agree with you more on that. In TH-cam (especially in car videos) is very rare to say something bad about a car without being insulted by a fanboy. But I'm gald that wasn't the case, despiete your earlier red mist, because, I understand that, If You like the 911, You might get upset by the legion of Clarkson's fanboys repeating his words as if he was god, so don't worry about It. It was nice to discuss with you.
they have gotten progressively more powerful but also progressively heavier. Also regarding the VW and porsche - the first VW was designed and built by Dr Porsche. Also, as most of you probably know, porsche/audi/vw share parts and engineering and are essentially one company.
"The beetle thing is plain stupid." Hardly. The 356 is a re-engineered Beetle. The 911 is a re-engineered 356; although the 912 is more similar to the 356. Being related to the VW Beetle is hardly anything to be ashamed about - they are equally iconic designs by Mr Porsche. :)
+TassieLorenzo They might be similar, but they have had a different approach in the market, while the Beetle was known as the people´s car, the 911 was, is and always will be a sport´s car, and that makes them completely different
The Porsche 911 is the modern Volkswagen Beetle. They still follow the classic rear engine, rwd formula that made the original beetle so good, while the “Beatle” that Volkswagen sells now is a Golf with a different (and very ugly) body slapped on top
I've driven the both and of course they are different but shall we say, same genus type. Same relatively light but quick responsive steering, they both feel so nimble. Of course the beetle lacks the power to dynamically push the chasis as much but unmodified and with its height and swing axles this is probably a Good Thing LOL
"fast like that Porsches" !!!??? Since when was a Porsche 356 "fast" with it's 80hp? Yes it was faster than the Beetle's 25hp; but VW is a PROUD heritage for Porsche, hardly anything to be ashamed of. :)
+TassieLorenzo If you'd been around when the 356 came out, you'd understand why it was so "fast". Compared to the behemoths of the day, the 356 was like being strapped to a feather that was rocket powered and handled like a white hot knife thru warm butter. Find somebody to take you for a ride in 1959 356 Super 90-110 and be sure to bring extra underwear.
Don't worry about the gtfo thing, It's ok now. Of course the first 911 and the first Beetle are completly different driving experiences, the Beetle is 25 years older , and It's a low cost car, not a sports car. But the thing is, that if the ideas are the same, if the 911 would have been designed in 1938, It would have been very similar to the Beetle. There are a lot of similarities between them, but there are also a lot of big differences. So I guess both of us have a valid opinion on this.
If I would fit in, I would prefer a 356… it is just so much sportier and more fun - the newer 911's changed towards performance and luxury, so I would prefer either way performance or real sportiness.
Classic air-cooled Porsche all the way! I love how noisy, minimalistic and raw the original is. If I want comfort and safety then I buy a Nissan or VW instead.
LaidIsGentleMen Hey LaidisGentelMen.....Well said, I have a 1983 SC with 294.000 klms on the clock & she stills goes hard & drives superbly, the sound, the lack of power steering, no ABS, no airbags, engine that hangs out the back, I could go on & on....32 years young & is vintage status now !
LaidIsGentleMen For the price they are going for these days the 911SC that I had always thought back when I was younger would be a cool, and affordable, car to own is now steadily moving into the territory of collector status. They used to be found for $10k-15k, and now they are going for $35k-$45k (or even more depending on condition) unless very high mileage and/or very rough. I always wanted a 911SC to build into a nice car to drive around, but would still love being on the track, but with their appreciating status as a collector I think that dream has gone out the window ... at this point I would honestly consider buying an early 00's 911 just because they can be had for
At 4:01 it says that Carrera 3.2 was produced from 1973-1989, that's not correct. 3.2 Carreras were produced from 1984-1989, 911SC (3.0) was before it, and 2.7 Carreras and 2.7 911 & 911S since 1974.
Because the Käfer was designed by Ferdinand Porsche. The 911 was designed by Ferry Porsche. The 901 (that was its original name before it was renamed to 911) is based on the Käfer yes, but it was not designed by the same person. The company we know today is the legacy of Ferry, whereas you are thinking of the genius engineer Ferdinand. Also, Ferdinand was instructed to design the Käfer (originaly called Kraft durch Freude Wagen) by Hitler. Ferdinand himself wasn`t interested in making it.
As soon as you see the Beetle, you realize that lots of Its details (for example, the body shape or where the engine is) appear on any Porsche 911 of any generation, so, according to that, you can say that the 911 is just a faster version of the Beetle.
Sadly.. CH does not work for this lot.. Autocar. Sure, he once did, but that was some years ago. Yes CH is probably the best UK motor journalist working today,..BUT, this guy Sutcliffe , is almost as good. Top lad altogether. My wish would be that these two CH and Sutcliffe would form a Co. and give us weekly top level flicks.. Great idea.. what'dyou think fella's..? WF
Right and your point is? After posting that comment, I did read back, but my comment still stands, Ferdinand PORSCHE designed the beetle. It is only natural of a designer to re-use HIS ideas. Even then i bet you have no idea which car came between the 911 and the beetle. You still didn't deny my logic, as you knew all along it was right.
Comeone Autocar, you don't gather 7 generations of 911 and jump from the orginal to the 993, this should be a longer video so please give each car ample screen time. This is the reason why your videos often get bashed.
As a Porsche novice I was hoping to find out about the difference between the iteration of the original 911 revisions, up to the G-series and then what the difference is with the drastic, radical 964 (85% new after all!!). Going straight from the original 911 to the 993 was quite the disappointment. :(
Sutcliffe said the 991 generation has put on some weight... to the best of my knowledge it is actually lighter than the 997!
I bought my doctor's 1996 Iris Blue 993 C2, after HE had owned it for 10 yrs, with only 19,000 miles. I've had it an additional 10yrs and now she has 56,000. 991 - Cristiano Ronaldo
993 - Eric Cantona
That is how those two generations feels to me - both are great, both in some other ways.
Excellent job Porsche as always! :)
Best sports car ever made
Here's to the greatest sports car of all time. Reign on, 911.
So according to autocar there is 3 Porsche 911 generations
The 2.0, the 3.0, the 3.3.
The air-cooled engine has charisma and can take a heck of a beating. I'd say the 993 was the last of the breed.
Always a pleasure seeing reports you've made, Steve. Thank you.
Evolution shot at the end was awesome!
I have the 1973.5 911 and this guy describes the feeling I have every time I run up the store and pick up a gallon of milk.
I LOVE the 993, it will be my absolute favorite. A Dark Green 1997 993 911 Turbo 4s would be magical, especially sound. Here are my favorites.
1-993
2-996
3-991
4-997
5-964
6-930
7-911 classic. ALL ARE AMAZING
"The steeering is d'lish-ish." made me lol
The 993 is my favorite as well. Best balance between the older feel and sound of the 911 while still having the more modern look to it. It's hard to tell from this video but they are tiny compared to the 991.
Steve is a good presenter. I like him and his approach.
My dream car : The original 911, Silver Exterior, Black Leather Interior.
Very good video! And this are the best cars, especially the 993.
What about the 996?
I really hope they make a proper video in the spring/summer where they go in depth with nice weather. This is a pretty nice teaser though :)
997 is the best looking 911 ever!!
Really nice piece. I hope there are more of them this year.
My favorites are the 3.2 Carreras and the 996s.
It could be a better review 😤😤
Carlitox b definitely.
I agree the 993 being the best, I fell in love with it driving it a couple of years ago. The newer ones feel stale in comparison.
Agree with Nathan, would have been nice to see a longer vid. Great with what was shown, though!
Hey Autocar, would you mind giving me the name of the background music? It sounds so relaxing :), great reviews btw, keep up the good work!
964!
Right, the classic Porsches sounds better then the news!
One word: Epic!

Nice one! Very sharp and to the point.
amazing tribute
930 turbo my dream but any 911 is welcome in my garage
Except the 996
Except the 996
996 gt3 rs is a legend for me I really want it!!!
The Star of China
Hey you would drive and own a 996, if it had ims upgrade, water pump and cooling upgrade, done!
Worst conditions for driving expensive cars EVER
which one would you have? for me it would be a 993 or the recent 991. hard choice to make that would be.
I love all of them . Porsche have a class !
so inaccurate! The SC ended in 1983 and had a 3.0 not a 3,2. And they lost all credibility to me driving such renown automobiles in SLUSH!
For looks alone, the 3.2 ("G series") Carrera is still my favourite.
It's a shame driving those first gen's during a snowy day. Besides that, a lovely doc!!
the audio from the latest videos sucks, i can barely hear it, and Steve speaks in a very calm way, so it is not loud enough.
What is the color name of that 991? It would look amazing on a 993 with black centered RS wheels.
The color is Lime Gold Metallic.
I've driven the both and of course they are different but shall we say, same genus type. Same relatively light but quick responsive steering, they both feel so nimble. Of course the beetle lacks the power to dynamically push the chasis as much but unmodified and with its height and swing axles this is probably a Good Thing LOL

my favorite is porsche 991 even know, but of course its dream car, which i might have in future..
Wow, this was awesome. I love the 993s also.
Don't worry about the gtfo thing, It's ok now.

993... hands down!
Yes, 993 GT2 is the 911 to remember!
Whats that color of the 991!? Is rare, Like yellow or some gold.
Classic air-cooled Porsche all the way! I love how noisy, minimalistic and raw the original is. If I want comfort and safety then I buy a Nissan or VW instead.

nicely done autocar
Again, congratulations for you.
Who let's their early 911 get driven in this crap winter weather?
Exactly, I sure ass hell wouldn't, no rain or snow or dampness.
993 was definitely my fave.
At 4:01 it says that Carrera 3.2 was produced from 1973-1989, that's not correct. 3.2 Carreras were produced from 1984-1989, 911SC (3.0) was before it, and 2.7 Carreras and 2.7 911 & 911S since 1974.
Really nice piece....thanks :)
Nice video. BUT! Why they drove the old, classic, beautiful 911 to the snow???
Because the Käfer was designed by Ferdinand Porsche. The 911 was designed by Ferry Porsche. i agree but the over all shape for me is the best, best driving car too
The 991 has grown on me a lot since it came out but I would still have 997.2 GT3 before it.
Yeah the shape is nice, never gotten to drive one =(
993 carrera , the basic one, 17 inch wheels (max), 6 speed, buy it and keep it
991 is the best looking of all..
He should have inluded the Taycan. The culimination of all Porsche ever has done.
A tribute like this deserves at least a full hour on a clear day on the Isle of Man...just sayin'
As soon as you see the Beetle, you realize that lots of Its details (for example, the body shape or where the engine is) appear on any Porsche 911 of any generation, so, according to that, you can say that the 911 is just a faster version of the Beetle.
I want all of 7.
So... 7 generations... You really only talked about the Classic, 993, and 991 in any length and skipped the other ones pretty much.
Sadly.. CH does not work for this lot.. Autocar.
Sure, he once did, but that was some years ago.

You still didn't deny my logic, as you knew all along it was right.
He's busy enjoying creative freedom at drive, son.
He was talking about the Cayman, he called it a cockster because it is a coupe version of the Boxter. Drop the B add the C simple!
why is your videos always so soft in volume???????
the original design is still the best looking if you ask me
Yeah i guess thats right, apart from my earlier "red mist" it was nice to end a discussion on TH-cam like adults.
Love the 993
So no mention of the 997.2 probably the overall best water cooled 911 ever built.
Things that go vroom...
is that rs 4.0 at 0:30 for sale?
50 years wow
why no 996? was it really that bad?
993 is my favorite 911. The 996 never got any love lol
is it just me? 996 sounds the best in this video
that you steve for saying what we all thinking. the latest 911 is just too big...
This should have been a Chris Harris video. He's very well versed in 911
thing about the 911 getting bigger, look at the difference in mini size for example. all cars are getting bigger, just a sign of the times
993 and 964 the nicest
The Australian Ford falcon has had 7 generations and is 53 years old this year
SUCH a shame the roads were crap - would have loved to see these cars driven properly...
Yep, right! But the Porsche is a Porsche and the Beetle is a Beetle.
the 930 turbo is the greatest!
I agree with you. It's also the best looking streetcar that Porsche ever made. IMO!
Scott Hill was a great handling car but way too much fuckin plastic!
Scott Hill 993!
Congratulations for you.
Comeone Autocar, you don't gather 7 generations of 911 and jump from the orginal to the 993, this should be a longer video so please give each car ample screen time. This is the reason why your videos often get bashed.
964..:)
