I remember playing this as a kid in an emulator two decades ago, just before TH-cam became a thing. Silly me needed TH-cam to see that it's really just Sonic 2 with some 3&K elements but for me personally, Pocket Adventure was still lots of fun. The smooth animations are just gorgeous and the music sounds really good for an 8bit system.
....honestly pocket adventure is actually a pretty damn good game, sonic 2 blood be damned. Special stages kinda jank, super sonic is locked behind the final boss, but honestly the puzzle pieces and the original layouts in not chemical plant act 2 is actually pretty interesting. The dimps pit issue is heavy yes, but this game has some genuinely clever ways to keep you into the upper path, like using loopdeloops to keep the upper area and even the "sky chase" section cuts a lot of the fat, which is welcome because _dear god_ every sky chase I've ever seen is _overblown_
Honestly, ign gets a lot of flak for supposedly hating on Sonic, but looking at their reviews of Sonic games, they are usually more positive than negative, consistently rewarding Sonic games higher scores than the average.

What?? It has the basic good and bad ending depending if you can collect all 7 chaos emeralds(the last being in Eggman's boss makes it clever) It also has puzzle pieces scattered around in every level that you can find and collect and make 6 different pictures with it. And if you do that(for 3 completed pictures you unlock the sound test) you unlock a special stage rush mode where you have to complete every special stage in one go. Basically that's 100% And you can also play time trial and get P on every level which in this game is Platinum. You can also play 2 player mode with friend. I think for a Neo Geo Pocket or handheld game in general before the GBA it has plenty of replayability. The graphics are also really nice to look at. It's not 10/10 because it's the best Sonic game but because it!s one of the best games on the handheld. I will never understand why we have to compare a console game to a handheld one.

This game has great graphics, solid sound, medium length and a lot of replayability thanks to the puzzle pieces and the chaos emeralds in general. At the time, Sonic Pocket Adventure scratched that Genesis-era playstyle itch that was missing in handhelds (not 1:1 physics-wise, but much more serviceable than the Game Gear offerings, which were their own beast). I doubt the walker was around when Neo Geo Pocket was a thing. The E3, before it was taken off the market, was promising, with more third parties showing interest in the platform. The NGPC library could be likened to the Dreamcast. There were more hits than misses, but the platform died before it could hit its stride.

a funny observation i made from reading the review is that, based on ign's logic, it's less of a 10/10 sonic game and more of a 10/10 neo geo pocket color game lol
SNK should have ported this on modern consoles by putting the game in their Neo Geo Pocket Color Selection Volume 2 instead of the blandness of Rockman Battle & Fighters.
