  • 2D Sonic is back with a completely original game and it mostly does the job well. Let's take a look to see what's good, what's bad and everything in between. Spoiler Alert: The bosses suck.

    Honestly, Superstars' time attack is genuinely some of the most fun I've had in a classic title... because 99% of the bosses are gone lol
    This game in some levels rivals Mania in level design but every time I get to the boss segment, its right back to the main menu.
    Also the art style is good, but i'm almost 100% sure the reason it looks so flat is cause of the backgrounds. In most of the stages, there's just... sky.

    Here’s how I would fix some of this game’s problems:
    -Make Trip’s Story OPTIONAL and give the player a difficulty warning
    -Nerf the bosses for those playing solo
    -Nerf the Black Dragon, there is no reason why it should take 5 minutes to beat one phase (and fix any instances of dying during phase transitions)
    -This is more of a nitpick but let us choose specific modes and stages for battle mode
    -Bring back Competition Mode from the other classics, there’s no reason why it can’t coexist with Battle Mode
    -Remix some of the music and make a toggle for it, and DO NOT LET JUN INTO THE STUDIO AGAIN UNLESS HE USES ACTUAL INSTRUMENTS
    -The medals should also be able to be used for things besides Battle Mode, like retrying Special Stages and a museum mode

    The level design for Trip's Story is the main reason why I think the player should have the option to zoom out the camera however they see fit for future 2D Sonic games. So, you know. You can actually SEE WHERE YOU'RE GOING at top speed. Playing through Trip's Story is like playing a Burnout game with the camera being stuck at only viewing the side of the car. You're not gonna see those hazards coming from off screen, so there clearly needs to be more control over the camera to get a better view of your surroundings. And if some players don't like having the camera being zoomed out, they can always just ignore that feature. Nobody says they have to zoom it out, but that should still be allowed for those like myself who prefer to see more of my surroundings in a game where you move as fast as Sonic.
    And yes, I agree that the boss fights absolutely suck purely because of how long they go on for. The wait probably wouldn't be so bad if they only took 3 hits to defeat like in a Mario game, but the fact that you have to wait for 30 seconds, attack, and repeat that process 5 or more times is just straight up tedious. I actually came close to rage quitting at the final battle with Fang because of having to do 9 minutes of progress all over again. It's not fun. It's just extremely aggravating.

    3:06 While not intentionally different, The Spindash charge is jank on higher framerates which has led to people thinking the Spindash has been nerfed when it hasn't.
    For anyone reading this that play on PC, Play with a 60fps cap and turn V-Sync off. It should mitigate most spindash related issues.

    When it comes down to it, I've loved Sonic Superstars. Especially loved the custom level design tailored to Trip's move set. But the only thing's that really bothered me with the game was all the bosses, as you pointed out, and the egg robos. Like the egg robos looked a little bit too shoehorned in. They don't even have a pixelated model for the cyber station either!

    I'm so glad I'm not the only one who felt so frustrated with Trip's final boss lmao. I genuinely didn't beat the game because of that. I spent over an hour on it and just realized that I was having such a MISERABLE time with it that I just can't bring myself to try more. I don't WANT to have to GRIND OUT a boss fight to beat a SONIC GAME. That's insane! Like yeah I'm sure I can beat it, IF I DEDICATE ANOTHER HOUR OR TWO.
    I don't even consider myself to be bad at the game or anything. But it's just frustrating is all.
    The game has a good base, just a few changes and maybe a price drop and it'd be a REALLY solid entry. But for whatever reason the game just has some really big mistakes.

      The bosses as a whole just make me not want to replay the game. If I play it again I'll probably just do time attacks of the stages since they don't have the boss fights.
      I think it's telling that the first speedrun tricks I found out about are Sand Sanctuary Boss Skip and Egg Samurai Boss skip.

      Same here, and believe me, it’s not an issue regarding skill, it’s just not worth it, I left it there it’s more BS than difficulty and after that there’s an equally awful boss encounter waiting for you… and Trip’s campaign it’s just annoying more than anything else.

    One thing most people don't mention is a downer about this game is the Act/Zone transitions..remember in Mania how detailed they were like the submarine from Oil Ocean leaving the Zone by flying through the air and continued showing as it crashed into Lava Reef? We don't get that in Superstars just a random "where did this object or platform come from" scenario, it's kinda lazy and bland

      or even sonic 3. you've got knuckles pressing on a button to break a bridge, a geyser sending you far away, or even being teleported to sky sanctuary

      Absolutely agree. They've done the bare minimum just to say they have Zone transition cutscenes in this game.

      Mania level transition weren't all that great for example. In stardust speedway when the little bug bot hit the phantom ruby we went from stardust speedway to falling into hydrocity or how the walls of hydrocity broke and the next thing we knew we were in the skies of mirage saloon. Whilst some were good transitions others were not really well implemented

    Great video. Everything you said here pretty much matches my feelings for this game perfectly. In fact I deleted the game after Fang's instant kill move killed me 7 times. Instant death is prehistoric game design and shouldn't even fucking exist at all today.
    Decent game completely ruined by terrible boss fights. Sorry for swearing but it makes me mad when a good game is ruined by complete bullshit.

      Eh... I don't mind instant death. Even in the new mainline sonic frontier we have instant death attacks. Fangs robot is meant to act as a harder final boss than the already difficult final boss of superstars. I think the instant death should be telegraphed better and we should be given a more clear heads up on it.

    Honestly after collecting all the chaos emeralds, running through the stages is pretty fun when you can just switch on Super Sonic to quickly destroy the bosses. Turning off the transformation between boss phases depending on levels is satisfying lol

    In regards to the bosses, they were designed with a lot of down time in-between hits is because of the multiplayer. As for Trip's story, I feel like it was intended to be a hard mode for the game. Although, I do understand the frustration people have with these aspects.

    Finally! Someone i can agree with this game. I didnt like bosses, the music is mixed, and gimmicks where a bit annoying. If only Artzert could learned a bit more from the Mania team to make ut fair and balanced but NOPE lol 🤣

    7:46 In Fang's boss fight in phase 2, if you get caught in the webs you can mash out of them pretty easily.
    8:38 In the true final boss, those black holes that are an instakill give you time to dash out of them, given the fact if you have enough rings to do so.
    I just thought these were cool little mechanics that people looked over.

      I know you can dash out the black holes, and I don't really think they're that much of a problem tbh. It's just a bit annoying that they're one hit kill in the first place.
      I wouldn't say you can get out the webs easily in the Fang boss fight, though. I can mash pretty hard, and I couldn't reliably get out. Maybe it's a similar problem that the spin dash has on higher frame rates? Either that or you have mash ridiculously hard every time, which at that point why bother?

      @@walkerslegendz I play Smash bros sometimes so mashing on the Fang boss fight comes as natural. It also makes it much easier to mash out if you press both jump buttons at the same time, much like how it makes revving the spin dash quicker.

    It's interesting how all the bad music in this game are the ones trying desperately to sound like genesis musics. Yet they keep doing it even though people don't like them. It's like their Music equivalent of Green Hill.

    I found myself agreeing with everything you said. I was very excited for this game. I had played all the original mega drive sonic games as a kid (that are still better than most games produced today), loved mania. I found, most of the time, I enjoyed this game. Though the difficulty spike in certain bosses is just off the chart. 7/10

    It's by far the best classic sonic game, it just has final bosses that are slightly worse than sonic fi al bosses usually are, which is always really bad this series has no good final boss

    sonic superstars isn't perfect, but it isn't terrible. Overall, it's just a decently fun time if you ask me

    That dragon is easily the worst Super Sonic boss in the series, no contest. Whoever decided it should be a long, strict pattern gauntlet should be fired from game design. The slow futility of knowing your rings won’t last because of a mistake or two(Even with Tails and Knuckles helping, yes it’s that slow) is far worse than instant death for me. It’s like “Oh well, at least I’m done with Fang’s final mech, it can’t get any worse,” but Superstars goes “SURPRISE!”

      Gotta ask how they are lazy when in every past game this is how they are handled? Go look at Sonic Heroes for example, they just get a round aura below them, not a color swap. They have never really had transformations.

    I honestly love 90% of Superstars, but *oh my god the final bosses are ABOMINABLE.* Especially Fang. The actual level design I think is great and really creative, the game looks really nice and I love the emerald powers. But the last leg of the game is just utter frustrating crap, there's no other way to say it.

    I agree with the whole video to the point of the base game being a great time and that it isn't the worst classic game by far, but I do believe thinking to yourself "When does this end?" can be a good thing, because when you're really enjoying a game and you start to "feel" you're in the endgame and it just keeps going is really cathartic if you like the game, but trips story seriously does DRAG-on

    This game is so close to being good, but it has some of the most _asshole_ level design I've ever seen in a non-kaizo game. Yeah I expect later levels to be harder, but instakill hazards you have a fraction of a second to react to with no telegraphing isn't good design. I don't care if I have infinite lives. In Sonic Mania every death felt like it was my own fault, but in Superstars they really went "eh, just put a bunch of spikes, pits, and offscreen crushers everywhere" and called it a day. At _least_ zoom the camera out a little more so I can see more stuff!
    They deserve credit for not relying on existing Zones, and Trip is a great addition to the cast, but... just play Sonic Mania instead, it's better and it's a fraction of the price.

    When do you fight the dragon? I got all the emeralds and never got to play that boss. Is that after Trip’s story? Which I haven’t beaten Fang yet.

    Solid points. It’s why I didn’t bother with Trip’s playthrough. At least you seemed to have enjoyed the main campaign. I can’t stomach another playthrough with all those annoying pace-breaking gimmicks and long bosses.

    I genuinely dont like the game as of rn for the reason my only experience with this game is in multiplayer, im sure when i do a single player playthrough it'll get better, but bc i have siblings and the game was a Christmas gift ofc we're gonna play it tg. However u feel like the main thing i was excited for, getting to play sonic multiplayer, kinda sucked. It was handled in a way that made it impossible to go faat or find secrets unless you and whoever you were playing with were on exactly the same page. They should've made it split screen or at least allow you to choose who the screen locks on to. There would be moments where me ir my sister went ahead of the other who was stuck on a platforming section and the screen would insist on staying on the person who was stuck, which just made most sections feel like a slog

    For me the whole game doesnt make sense. Stuff happens, just because. And sometimes the game feels like Brainrot.
    I had a decent time with the game, outside of the bosses, but it's not a game i ever want to replay in the future. I feel like playing Mania again.

    Says tracks aren't good but plays one of my favorites 😂😂😂and Trips Levels were great especially since you get to keep the Chaos Emeralds which makes her story childs play anyways

    I definitively enjoyed Sonic Superstars. Some of the bosses do overstay their welcome. Trips story...... I had to take a break due to the difficulty.

    I've realised that if you learn the attacks and use the emerald capsules, you will have more fun with the bosses. Also, I hate it when people use price as a criticism for the game. Last time I checked, the price is determined by the publisher, not the game developer. The overpricing is a criticism of SEGA, not Sonic Superstars.

    You’re spot on with everything you said here. The Main Story was fun enough for me, even if I didn’t enjoy the bosses, and if it was just that, I’d say it’s a pretty easy recommend at $30. But Trip’s Story genuinely ruined this game for me, and I guarantee it was only forced on you to justify the full $60 price tag. Her final boss, especially, is one of the worst things I’ve experienced in a video game *period* and no amount of “skill issue” comments can justify the abhorrently cheap design decisions made with it. I honestly think Sonic 4 has better boss fights on average than this game, and that is far from a good thing.
    I uninstalled the game after spending four hours trying to beat it only to die to the head slam attack that is not telegraphed in the slightest. I’ve played much harder games than this, and this is just blatantly bad design. And from everything I’ve seen, I’m not missing out with the true final boss. I shouldn’t be too surprised given Arzest’s track record, but this game was by far the most disappointing Sonic game I’ve ever played. All the criticisms I’ve experienced personally and heard from others really make me wonder if the glowing reviews from critics and fans came from people who only played the main story, because it feels like we’re playing completely different games. I’m not saying they’re wrong for enjoying it, but I personally don’t see how anyone could enjoy Trip’s Story and the true final boss.
    P.S. Sonic Team: *never* let Jun Senoue near a classic Sonic game *ever* again.

    Plz make a post or video talk about how lazy they are doing with the Lego super sonic
    every lego characters in game have their superform, although it’s lazy. but when lego sonic do a super form, he just becomes 2.5d instead of transform into the lego super form from the lego dimension dlc💀💀💀
    bruh im so pissed about this, they make the lego so good but why they didn’t make the super form for lego sonic? Bruh i love the lego one so much and they just fk it up☹️

    Trips final boss and snow zone boss were tight tuned as is final story boss, post game / extended story fights are not really something people should be boo hooing about...cause what does one expect from post game? Players had the entire game too learn the mechanics. If people are still crying over basic midboss / boss fights IDK what to say cause those fights should damn near be melted before the foe can do much of anything.
    Just because buy a game does not mean will see credits roll and clear all content. I think that is the problem some people have, as if software is at fault if does not pander players ego at every turn. LMFAO OK final boss gets a patch for a checkpoint and reduced hitpoints.........would one then feel pride they were finally able to best the " unfair " boss that thousands of others beat without a nerf?
    Spoiler Alert: The Players Suck...not because they cant beat a boss but cause they cant deal with not beating the boss and blame everything but themself. This scrub mentality is really sad in fighting games and forthright pathetic in PvE platforming.
    Anyhow...there is a very easy method for unlimited super form so push come to shove I really dont get the tears. There are options to cornball the game right back if feel being mistreated.

      There’s a difference between fun difficulty that feels satisfying to beat (like Eggmanland for example, and even then not everyone enjoys that) and something that’s unfun to play because the so called “difficulty” is more artificial than actually testing your skills. If you’re unironically saying “skill issue” to someone who isn’t enjoying the game as much as you, you’ve probably wasted enough of your time to come off as insufferable to anyone else that’s trying to mind their own business.
      P.S: if you play the boss unnerfed with no checkpoints, cool, I salute you. If you play it with checkpoints, cool, I salute you, as you should be able to enjoy the game without having to get frustrated because the game decided to pull a cheap shot at you and make you restart at the beginning (because that would be bad game design now, wouldn’t it?)

      @@sanctifiedfracture4579 The conditioning of the design works, so hard for me to call it bad design. Sonic 1 end boss simple as seems is nothing but 1 hit kills from pistons / energy balls. Sonic 2 has Mecha Sonic / eggman, nothing but 1 hit kills from them and something like 5-6 hits for Mecha Sonic / 10 hits for Eggman too defeat. Die enough on those bosses and its back to the title screen BAD DESIGN RIGHT :P Superstars seems in line with the classic series. Superstars was basically solved a few days after release many got it in one setting.
      Guess what, personally had to solve the end boss phases in increments, if that process started to tilt me...would go play Bridge Island and simply chill and let options simmer in back of mind. When felt fresh give it another go being lose enough to lab and not get mad. Sleeping on things helps as well as by default that is how lock in learning. Plus there is no need for me to beat the bosses cause already got freaking Super Sonic / Gem Powers / and entire game to route. Beyond that got the game so have another Sonic in rotation with the others been playing decades...so what if takes bit of time to 100% it? HELL routing style speed runs Superstars will never be 100%ed....gotta go fast...slow.
      Skill Issue / Get Good?...when advised in original post to Endless Super exploit bosses. My point is not getting tilted by a boss fight, its a nasty cycle where get more upset and more upset...locks one in a mode where start disliking what previous enjoyed ( and playing worse in a negative loop ). My point about checkpoints is nothing to do with player " skill " its all about...play game fun, play game fun, play game fun, die on boss OMFG broken cheating bad design no fun. Did we notice when the "fun" died? Yup...tilted at a boss fight so the sky is falling. If boss took less hits, lower chance of failure...lower chance of someone raging. We cant control how many hits takes to beat boss so how about control our own emotion when slapped with RETRY.
      Fun is subjective...some find no fail state fun others find some gauntlet of death 10x beyond Superstars fun. Some find problem solving fun.
      P.S If there was option to put checkpoint in middle of major fights or hell a training mode for the phases I would welcome it. for labbing / QOL. The only legit cheap shot can think of is Final Story RNG Fireball ( yet perhaps even that could be solved to defeat the " random " its keying off some element of Sonics position ) ...everything else is a pattern.
      Player does have a level of control over the bosses with basic placement and it can be nutty how easy many attacks can be avoided even kited by not killing self with useless movement and jumps. Trips Fang boss most deaths come from running into spider web. If its two low targeting, just stand and jump out after lock...dont full throttle run after jump out ( tick movement and single jump follow up shots ). One web target on the ground, just run from lock and start tick movement single jump for shots. See thats the conditioning spoke of...Fangs tri-web shots can have player get frantic.....the player gets conditioned to zoom 360 around arena and run into web they already avoided HAHAHA. HEY if want to talk design we can talk design :)

      Difficulty isn't inherently bad. A game being unfair is bad, and having insta kill attacks in boss fights that can last about 10 minutes is unfair.

      It really didn't take me that long to beat the final boss, I found it very fun with a heavy challenge. Just like with update 3, I feel that sonic fans honestly can't handle difficulty.....😅

      How about playing other game franchises to get a difficulty fix rather than demanding a player base to get used to it in a franchise not commonly known for it?
      Even the Mega Drive games had points docked in some game magazines for being too easy.

      Final boss glitches all over the place, I'd have no problem with the difficulty if the entire floor didn't blink in and out of existence or a cutscene locks my movement in the second phase and kills me before I can even move. If it doesn't glitch though, the final boss is just okay, not super creative or fun to play. Sometimes it really is a game-design issue, and anyone who says skill issue in response to valid criticism usually likes games like Big Rigs or Sonic Boom unironically.

    The idea that Genesis tracks are "bad" just because they are on this style is just stupid and the how how it was handle in this video was extremely stupid. That said, the Sonic 4-like tracks are bad because they are bad, not because of the Genesis sound chip.

      I never said the genesis style is bad. I said the composers trying to make it sound like the genesis is holding them back. Jun Senoue is a great composer, but he isn't good at making this style of music.

      I understand it can be annoying seeing people constantly complain about Sonic, but I think it's important to acknowledge any issues a game has, even in games you think are good. I still think Superstars is a good game despite its flaws.

      Because we arent conformists. We know these games can be sooo much better. We even have proved it before. Sega just like to tine crunch the fuck out of these games, at this point we are more waiting for fangames than sega releasing something decent.
