He's a good therapist. He recognizes that this man has a coping mechanism that is not a threat to the immediate safety of anyone. You don't try to make someone give up a coping mechanism before they are ready, because it can lead to an outburst of more extreme behavior in many situations. This therapist showed compassion and met his patient where he was for the singular meeting that he had with him.
I definitely agree that being non-judgmental and recognizing that this is not a threat to anyone is good of the therapist. The only thing I wonder, is about what he said towards the end of his interview portion; "eventually it will become more difficult for him to make connections with real people". I wonder if the guy at all tried to suggest resources to look into to work on social anxiety/loneliness/misogyny/trauma etc that could be contributing to this. Because leaving Dave with no follow-up or recommendations, even when you know it could hurt him in the future, might be irresponsible. like you said though, he only had one opportunity to see him, and I appreciate his kindness and understanding for the guy.

Yeah, just based off of this video, I was thinking he seems intelligent, self-aware, and put-together. He apparently has friends. Whatever the childhood trauma that has driven him to seek companionship in the dolls is not being solved by modern psychology. Unfortunately, it’s also not being solved by people being harsh/ judgmental of him having this coping strategy. If he can find someone who doesn’t find it creepy or weird, he will likely find an (as he put it) “organic” partner. He will probably always have his dolls, though, and someone who will really love him will have to accept him for who he is and not look at him as a project or date him with the intent to change him. That’s what a healthy relationship is, giving someone room to grow, but not dating them with the intent to fix them. Not to speculate, but that might be why he sticks with dolls in the first place, because maybe they give him the space to be himself? I hope he can find someone someday that helps him to be less lonely. I was recently watching a video about AI and people with AI partners and the appeal of having either a silent partner or one who just always says what you want to hear. The trouble is… real relationships, with real, complicated people challenge us, grow us and push us forward. It’s hard. There's just no way it's all about sex for him, in my opinion. It's clearly a fantasy relationship and he knows to draw a line, but the level of commitment and roleplaying in this poly relationship shows me a sex worker wouldn't do it for him because he would know the affection and validation is just as fake as if he were to pay a real girl to do it, but the dolls haven't been with anyone else and he can create their personality and lore and that really isn't super twacked to me. Before I actually watch this I'm just going to say....I genuinely do not mind when people do this in general. Between trauma, abuse, neglect and insecurity there are tons of reasons that people end up attracted to inanimate objects. It's unusual but happens more than people might think. It's not even strictly a kink or fetish either. It can stem from a few different mental conditions and illnesses but is generally not super harmful beyond making people uncomfortable. Yeah, well, the last guy I casually dated (31) hit me with a bomb at the end of our relationship by telling me he has not just one of these things but has three and that each one is a person to him. He's a good therapist. He recognizes that this man has a coping mechanism that is not a threat to the immediate safety of anyone. You don't try to make someone give up a coping mechanism before they are ready, because it can lead to an outburst of more extreme behavior in many situations. This therapist showed compassion and met his patient where he was for the singular meeting that he had with him.

Whatever the childhood trauma that has driven him to seek companionship in the dolls is not being solved by modern psychology. YO Okay, so my best friend of most of my life actually got in contact with Dave shortly after his My Strange Addiction episode aired. The reason why the psychologist seemed so chill with him doing this as a coping mechanism is because it can be far more harmful to get rid of a copping mechanism, especially if it isnt handled correctly. For example, if he was shamed into giving up this coping mechanism, then it could eventually turn into a mire hamrful coping mechanism that would do more damage to him and others as he tried to fill the gap of how this current coping mechanism was helping him. You have to instill healthy coping mechanism before trying to get rid of the unhealthy ones, otherwise it just creates a vacumes where potentially worse coping mechanisms are created
