After viewing lots of images shot with Leica lenses I am a firm believer in that almost indefinable “pop” of their lens formulas. I call it a creamy snap. I've used Leica's APO Summicron-SL lenses on my SL system for years. One of the least talked about things regarding the APO lenses are the way they render black and white images. Because the color channels are aligned on the sensor, there is a tremendous amount of detail, contrast and microcontrast . Images almost take on a degree of hyper-reality. I've had the Q3 43 since last week and it seriously may replace my 35 & 50 APO lenses on the SL3.

Some people seem to think that just because you can take a good picture with other camera systems that somehow should disqualify Leica on the basis of it’s steeper price. If you’re on a budget your accountant might agree with this rationale but if you’re a seasoned artist this logic just misses the point. Don’t own any myself but I tend to see Leica shooters as seasoned artists who have shot so many different cameras and can get great photos no matter what. I imagine when you’re at that stage of development, when you’re so secure in your craft, that yes you may still always be chasing after that next great picture but the process is smooth, well honed and it frees up capacity to focus on the other aspect of the craft which is the man-machine connection. This is what Leica offers. Of course image quality is superb. But honestly I think it’s the combination of the image and the quality of the machine itself that makes Leica sacred. Sure there’s the rich tourist out there who just wants to be seen with a prestige camera on holiday but by far and way I see most Leica users as some of the most dedicated and passionate for the craft. This may seem like an amateur question because it is, but are there Lightroom LUT or presets that I could apply to get similar looks on iPhone 48 megapixel raw images - in particular the m11 warm photos
Those extra presets are in the description! Those were edited with my LR film presets. But as the gentlemen above me said, you can use the presets but it comes down to much more than just that. But yeah, try shooting raw on your photo and those presets! I’ve used them on iPhone shots before and I jsut have to dial back the contrast a little
@@hhankx Um, no, lol... I think they're asking how to color grade their iphone photos similarly -- which is a valid ask. Not if their iphone can take similar photos to the M11. Misinterpretation of the question.
12:00 I understand how he came to this conclusion, but it's not correct. Let's learn together! Glass, much like water causes light defraction (warping). Shorter color wavelengths, like violet, defract less than longer wavelengths, like red. A good lens design and excellent glass clarity can minimize and correct diffraction. But it's extreamly difficult to account for diffraction on the far ends of the focus range.
I think that’s what I was trying to say haha. The different wavelengths (color) hit the sensor plan at different points. The APO elements help align those more precisely. No?
Love your images with this camera, they really pop! And the bokeh looks so nice, which is strange as APO corrected lenses rarely has really great bokeh. Any chance you could put some of the images for download in full res, Flickr for instance? :)
I actually covered it but cut it out cause this video is too long lol. But yeah you can use them but the hood barely fits on, and then macro mode won’t work. So hopefully we get an extended one with a window too
@@cammackey Thanks for your quick response and the clarification. I myself shoot with the Nikon Zf with a couple of lenses and the Leica Q2. Both great but it could be that the Q3 43 might replace the Q2. Although I now know that I will have to buy the round sunshade too 🙂
I don’t know if any other Q3 owners notice this. But one of my biggest gripes is the “hard stops” are actually unusable. Like if you go to the hard stop it’s actually past infinity, so nothing is in focus!! Anyone else notice this??
This is also very common on a lot of lenses. The infinity mark is there for a reason… to let you know when you’re at infinity………. Some lenses do go past that mark. I don’t know why fully, but I do know with cinema lenses it gives you some leeway just incase the back focus is off due to the lens mount or camera mount. Now obviously the Q is fixed lens..
Some great affordable APO options are the dulens series that came out a year or 2 ago. They're compact cine primes, but considering how much you like the APO prime on this guy, it'd be interesting to see your opinion on those.
The Q3 43 looks epic. Very tempting camera! How about the M11D, any thoughts on it? I know your rocking the M11P but I dont know, the D looks like your jam!
@@cammackey Woah, you've been drinking too much coffee. Your video was top rate. If you've got the M11 better to spend yr dollars on new lenses than a M11D! Best wishes.
@@johndewhirst3089 hahaha I haven’t had enough yet!!! I def won’t be buying the M11D, but I would have it was out when I got the M11 instead of the M11. Cause then it would separate the two even mroe for me.
idk maaannnn, it's tough, the X2D and 55mm is basically the same, has better color and is amazing, but then the A7CR exists. If you add A7CR + Voigtlander APO Lanthar 50mm, you get close for $4k, since I imagine a lot of that kit is similar to the q3 43, you can assume the q343 lens costs $3000 and the body is $4000. So is the q3 worth $3000 extra? Is the Hassleblad kit worth $6,000 more than that? The Hassleblad is16 bit color, 1/4000 sync, handmade, good service, all the glass is top notch..... q3 43 though let's you wear it casually. I can't imagine wearing a $14,000 street cam, I also can't imagine any E-mount lens is as small and as good as the Leica 43mm. So I think what has happened is that hybrid cameras are now annoying and multiple cameras with specificity is the solution... but that's EXPENSIVE. What a time to be alive. I think I'll get the q3 43 because of the "the best camera you have is the one you have with you" advice and for $3000 more than the Sony, you acquire the pleasant UI, good color and great tiny lens Leica have made for this. But I now only think this way because I can't think about a camera being the only one in my studio. My B&H wishlist is now up to $28,000 and I truly don't know what to do now, but the q3 43 does feel like a camera I'd simply enjoy using. So it's a luxury purchase, not a tool.... The better tool is the Hassleblad... but I only have e-mount glass. This has been an example of the manic camera thinking I'm sure we all do in our heads.
I’ll admit I’m not convinced on the “pop” I keep hearing about. I need some side by side comparisons first. with that said, I’m seriously lusting after this camera. I own the poor man’s version (Panasonic s9 😂)
@@cammackey I have both of them I couldn't bear to part with the V Just yet and I think the autofocus alone was worth the upgrade in my opinion. Having used the Q3 I don't think it's worth the astronomical price tag. 😵💫
@@javierherrera9450 I honestly didn’t notice too big of a difference with the AF, it still has that annoying pumping thing it does. And yeah I get the price thing with the Q3. It is kinda crazy how good the build quality is tho. I guess all their stuff is hand made and they pay all their employees well, so I feel blessed that I can support that. I’m sure there’s extra money on top of it haha but honestly the build quality compared to the Fuji x100 series.. the X100 literally feels plasticy in comparison. Like each knob and button on the Q feels robust. Like every inch of it feels like.. “they don’t make them like they use to” well with this they do.
As a car photographer I wish i could switch to a Leica Q3 43 becasue I need to be on the Sony Alpha system to create professional work with that versitality and quailty also the dual card slot. But all the time i wish i could do that on a Leica Q because the sony system dont inspire me as a creative. Any opinion and suggestion on this debate?
Well one, double card slots is a market tactic. Sure it’s great, but after 16 years of photography and lots of money made, I never once utilize double card slots. But yea, maybe the Nikon ZF, that was my favorite before this one.
I am the predictor of outcomes and I predict dozens and dozens of this model appearing on the used second hand market in about 3-6 months once the impulse buyers realise how restricted they are. Staying with my 28mm with the ability to crop in.
My QL has been my everything film camera. Love the 40mm. When I had my Q, the thing that made me sell it was that damn focus ring. Why on earth do I need to release a button to turn my lens? It was never in the right position. But damn those images are freaking awesome.
@@cammackey literally every autofocus lens available has that function. 🤷🏻♂️ Edit :apparently the all other lenses rotate freely. The Leica has hard stops for the focus range. Hence why it can’t been free to spin. Even owning one didn’t enlighten me on that design. 🤦🏻♂️
And everyone asks the other lens options to have hard stops. Why? Because focus by wire is absolute shit for manual focusing. Hard stops lets you know when you’re at minimum or infinity focus. It’s how DSLR lenses and cinema lenses are made. Mirrorless camera brought on that new tech and everyone ended up hating it who needs manual focus. So, Leica is doing the right thing in my opinion.
8:26 _"I'm pretty sure it's the same sensor as my Sony A7RV."_ I'm believe all medium format and FF sensors over 40MP are devloped by Sony, except for Canon's stuff.
Instead of buying different lenses, now you have to buy different cameras. I already have a Q3 28mm. It's time to buy another camera. The main thing is not to confuse and buy 28 mm again.

That ok. You take amazing images! Great Race car drivers love fast cars… Lots of them!!
@@cammackey Cam sorry for the confusion… my message is reading all wrong… It sounds like I’m questioning your decision to buy a faster Leica than your other 2, I’m not… I’m actually saying you are a pro and you work a certain way that is helped by a faster autofocus/ flip-out etc. And whenever it comes out, if that helps you make faster and better decisions its needed.. My point was supposed to be that in the old days they did the same thing but the cameras were a whole lot slower without good autofocus… And when a newer faster camera came out they jumped on it… As a successful artist you get what you need to get to be the best “YOU” can and if others don’t like it too bad!!
The best thing about your video is you show some photos rather than crap on about the specifications. I don’t know why all these other Q43 videos aren’t showing photos.

No?
Can the lens hood install after using Shortstache Filter? Thanks.
Yes, but you cant adjust the filter with the hood on
40mm is GOAT. Even though I just use Canon the 40mm 2.8 pancake as a bodycap. Wish there was a RF 40mm 1.4 though.
Agree, would love for Canon to make a compact 40mm.
Canon 35 1.4 > 40 f2
There is the small M-mount Voigtländer Nokton 40mm f1.4
Love your images with this camera, they really pop! And the bokeh looks so nice, which is strange as APO corrected lenses rarely has really great bokeh. Any chance you could put some of the images for download in full res, Flickr for instance? :)
How ia it for video?
I saw reports here and there that it is not possible to use filters in combinatie with the supplied square lens hood. Is this correct?
I actually covered it but cut it out cause this video is too long lol. But yeah you can use them but the hood barely fits on, and then macro mode won’t work. So hopefully we get an extended one with a window too
@@cammackey Thanks for your quick response and the clarification. I myself shoot with the Nikon Zf with a couple of lenses and the Leica Q2. Both great but it could be that the Q3 43 might replace the Q2. Although I now know that I will have to buy the round sunshade too 🙂
I always thought I was doing something wrong when I digitally cropped with my Q2 and it still showed the full photo.
🤡
got a link for that thumb grip? love it
idsworks.store
The price is hard for many to swallow but the results do not lie.. would love to own one of these some day
I don’t know if any other Q3 owners notice this. But one of my biggest gripes is the “hard stops” are actually unusable. Like if you go to the hard stop it’s actually past infinity, so nothing is in focus!! Anyone else notice this??
I haven’t noticed that
@@cammackeyOh really!! I have the 28mm one. At the infinity mark, it’s in focus, but past that to the hard stop and it isn’t!!
I own them ;) I prefer anamorphic tho
Count me in as a lover of the 40mm length. Here is hoping Canon comes out with a compact RF 40mm option.
How much distortion is there distortion when using macro mode?
Distortion?? Like edge distortion?? I haven’t noticed much. Granted I shoot a lot of anamorphic so I’m not as funky as others
Picked mine up yesterday. Absolutely love it. Great video Cam
The 28mm is still better imo because of the cropping ability with such high resolution.
If you don’t care about compression.. sure
@@cammackey for sure that’s a nice benefit of the q43 but there’s so many street shots you’ll miss at 43mm that you can’t go wider with like on the 28
The Q3 43 looks epic. Very tempting camera! How about the M11D, any thoughts on it? I know your rocking the M11P but I dont know, the D looks like your jam!
Yeah I would have loved the M11D honestly!!!! I got my M11 for $6500 tho which is a steal
@@cammackeyIn your video you say you'd like a tilt screen on your M11 so htf would you cope with an MIID??
@@johndewhirst3089 did you listen to the context of that part? Or are you just being a sassy pants
Great video!
idk maaannnn, it's tough, the X2D and 55mm is basically the same, has better color and is amazing, but then the A7CR exists.
Bro. I’ll send you some raws!!
When Leica puts as many video options in the M as the S9 has, I’ll switch lol
The Fuji X00VI would have done awesome on that cattle drive!
I sold mine. Will probably pick up the X100V again at some point. The VI is not worth it honestly
@@cammackey is not worth what exactly?
The wait.. the cost.. the upgrade.. if they ever actually get them in stock, the X100V used price will go down and I’ll pick another one of those up
@@cammackey I have both of them I couldn't bear to part with the V Just yet and I think the autofocus alone was worth the upgrade in my opinion.
I’m finding the image quality on Sony A7RV + 50 GM 1.4 lot lot better than Q3 43.
Lol, do you think this video was about image quality?
As a car photographer I wish i could switch to a Leica Q3 43 becasue I need to be on the Sony Alpha system to create professional work with that versitality and quailty also the dual card slot. But all the time i wish i could do that on a Leica Q because the sony system dont inspire me as a creative. Any opinion and suggestion on this debate?
Well one, double card slots is a market tactic. Sure it’s great, but after 16 years of photography and lots of money made, I never once utilize double card slots. But yea, maybe the Nikon ZF, that was my favorite before this one.
@@cammackey Have you tried M lenses on Sony? It is possible...
most punk rock youtuber out there too btw
loved this take. would love to get my hands on one as well!
Love you bro bro
@@cammackey miss youuuuu
I still prefer sl3 ❤
I am the predictor of outcomes and I predict dozens and dozens of this model appearing on the used second hand market in about 3-6 months once the impulse buyers realise how restricted they are. Staying with my 28mm with the ability to crop in.
This is a dumb hot takes. We might as well only buy 12mm lenses and just crop in 😂
I absolutely have to have one of these. Now I just gotta figure out how to pay for it.
If you cannot buy it two times over no sweat, you cannot afford it.
My QL has been my everything film camera. Love the 40mm. When I had my Q, the thing that made me sell it was that damn focus ring. Why on earth do I need to release a button to turn my lens? It was never in the right position. But damn those images are freaking awesome.
Because it would interfere with the autofocus……..
@@cammackey a very valid point
Super review.
You will ever make a review of nikon z6iii?
Maybe 🤷🏽♂️
I have no interest in this camera (Mostly because of the price 😂) but I do like 40mm a lot and like your style so I watched the video.
I appreciate it 🥲
8:26 _"I'm pretty sure it's the same sensor as my Sony A7RV."_
I'm believe all medium format and FF sensors over 40MP are devloped by Sony, except for Canon's stuff.
It's heresy but I never liked the colours from the Fuji XT30 II & 23mm f2.0 in the end I returned it back...
Thought you weren't excited about gear any more though?
I’m not. I’m excited for this camera though. And autofocus anamorphic. You got an issue with that?
Instead of buying different lenses, now you have to buy different cameras. I already have a Q3 28mm. It's time to buy another camera. The main thing is not to confuse and buy 28 mm again.
Very nice...
Come on Cam some of the greatest photographs of all time were made with old slow film cameras… You don’t have to explain why you buy a camera or 10 cameras… You take KILLER IMAGES with ALL of your Full Frame cameras… ❤
You love cameras.. That ok. You take amazing images!
Great Race car drivers love fast cars… Lots of them!!
Well, I didnt say anything like that though…….. all I said was that this camera was awesome. Soooo sure haha
Starting to regret buying the Q3 28
i want it
Aint got nothing on my trip 35 😅
