I get why people would want the 43 but the 28 makes more sense to me as an everyday carry. If your back is against a wall, you can't move back more to get the shot, but you can always move closer
Thanks for watching! Point taken, the 28 definitely gives you more room while the 43 switches gears so you can focus more on details or tighter compositions.
I predict, many will sell and I guarantee many will be on Facebook groups listed for sale 2-2 months later. If you shoot wide, you can always crop in. If you shoot too close, you can’t go backwards. If I had to have a camera with a permanent fixed focal length, it would be a camera with a wide focal length such as 28 mm and not a restricted 43 or more millimeters
Thanks for the wonderful video! The fact that you "have" the 28mm with you makes all the difference when you're traveling, especially if you shoot landscape. Honestly, the pros of the 43 does not outweigh the cons of the original Q3. Ultimately it depends on what kind of photography you do. I love my Q3 so much! They're all amazing tools.
I have a Q3 28 and just put in an order for Q3 43 after watching so many TH-cam videos. Although the 28 is very convenient and versatile, the photos from a 43 looked much much better. I understand this is a personal taste; to me, 28 is capturing the moments but without a subject, however the 43 really brings out the subject of a photo.
Thank you for that interesting and neutral comparison. It showed me, that it really depends on what you want to shoot. If you are in to persons and objects, the 43 mm is the better choice. If you are into buildings and landscapes you better go with the 28 mm. I think if you are like me, shooting on vacations with your family and only want to bring one camera. I‘ll always go with my Q3 28. I‘m much more versatile with it. It is wide, when I need it to be. If I want to make a close shot or a portrait of one of my loved ones I really can come a bit closer or crop in a bit. I think nobody with either camera will crop in to 150mm equivalent either. 50-75 mm will be the maximum on these. Both cameras will leave you with great results there
There are tons of Q3 and Q3 43 reviews out there but this is the only one that compares the lenses in terms of field of view and other differences. Thank you for sharing this.
I must say.. as someone who used to shot mostly 50mm and above.. getting the x100vi has made me appreciate 28-35 focal length and in pretty much every example you posted I preferred the 28mm shot.. it’s kinda crazy. I see the benefit of both.. due to 60mp I think the 28 makes more sense as you can sort of mimic a 40-50mm lens with it.. but with the 43 you gotta move back
Same here. In the examples I mostly prefered the 28mm shots. The 43mm versions very often looked cut off to me. I guess it depends on what you want to photograph. The portraits definitely looked better with 43mm.
I’m a wide shooter and in travel and landscape photography is what I do the shooting most. So the 28mm is for me. Very detailed comparison and nice shots you have here!
I feel like 43 is better for doing portrait. If you’re type of photographer who does landscape more often, I feel like 28 is the best because you can crop. 43 is not suitable for that category.
Thanks for watching! Yes, the 28 allows for more crop options for a wider scene while the compression of the 43 allows you to mimic longer focal length compressions more closely providing more accurate scale. Either option lets you achieve your desired vision.
This was a GREAT comparison video. Thanks for the time and effort you put into this! Both Cameras are beautiful and I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't want one of each!
Finally! I’ve been indecisive until now. Thank you for making this comparison video! There are a few mint condition used 28’s for 1,000 under list but I’m going for the 43. I shoot mostly friends and family and a few events. Yes I can walk towards a subject but perspective is important and taking a few step back is sometimes more appropriate.
I have GRiiix (40mm) and a Q3 (28mm)… even as Ricoh is far more portable, I pick Q3 a lot more because of the focal length more than for any other reason… 28mm is way more versatile and useful especially given the options to digitally crop on 60mp
How about the 5.7 EVF on the Q3? It is super along with the 8GB buffer that lets one shot and shot and shot without delay. The LCD is 1.7 and the battery lasts forever plus the Q is fun frame and 60MP of full frame. This is leaps and bounds above the GRxxx which is APS-C.
I’m a Q2 user and using it reminds me of my photo classes in college…zoom with the feet. Were I buying today, I’d go for the 43 (I learned on my dad’s camera with a 40mm), but I have really appreciated how the 28, and the Q2 in general, have inspired creativity through limitations. And the Leica Q line experience has made me much more intentional and confident in making photos.
Excellent video and demonstration of the two lenses, side-by-side. I was trying to decide between the 28 and 43, and this was very helpful. Thanks for sharing this!
if you haven't seen this particulare focal length and aperture combination, it's because it's impossible to make. realistically I think 24-50 f/2.8 is possibile, sony has it. at f/2.8 you still get lots of light, though you loose the super dreamy bokeh that a prime f/1.8 or f/1.4 would give you. I would still totally take it tough.
Thanks for the comparison! I have to admit that the compositions of the Q3 43 generally look nicer to my eyes, but I wouldn't sell my Q3 for it. I think the Q3 makes more sense for it's intended purpose to be a camera for all situations. If I was planning to upgrade I would probably get something like the M-11 D in addition to my Q3.
Quite surprised how much I preferred the macro with 28mm and the colour rendition with the 43. Maybe I just need an SL or LUMIX S5 with a couple of lenses :)
The lack of back space argument can be turned around by merging several vertical shots in Lightroom. I tend to use more frequently this technique on my 50mm Nikon full frame as I prefer the result over wide angles : No curves, no distracting large area in the front, realistic compression everywhere. An example on Q3-43 made by Mathphotographer : th-cam.com/users/clipUgkxnwp64-BdHJesbJs9XxTYj9tgho8y81kT?si=mVxPNcd7caGfuHFH Of couse it has limitations (e.g. wide moving crowd at an event) where I have then to "suggest" the crowd by choosing the right placement/angle rather than "showing" it in a wide angle shot.
Is the result of 43 very good compared to 28? Is there a big difference between the quality of the apo lens and summiLux? I'm torn between 28 and 43. I need a multipurpose camera
One important thing to mention is that the Leica Q3-43 is $2,400 cheaper than the Leica M 50mm Apo-Summicron, and that is just the lens. For $2,400 less you get pretty miuch the same lens, plus a camera with IBIS and autofocus. What is not to like? I used the original Q with the 28mm lens, but I found that the 28mm was not for me. The SL also has a 50mm Apo-Summicron, but it is big and heavy and a different animal altogether.
First video that really shows how a wide just doesn’t bring background close enough for relevance. Probably just how I “see” but so often there’s background detail i want considered in the composition that would get lost with a 28.
I'm biased to 43mm. Why? Tighter framing. Of course there are cases on which 28mm is useful. Just be aware with wide angle lenses, there are bigger possibilites of more unwanted elements. That's how I compose: always trying to avoid/subtract unwanted elements. No, I don't shoot portrait. On the other side, it's understandable that street/landscape folks will gravitate towards the 28mm.
I got mine yesterday, actually one of the first few in my country. I already love it very much, complements the Q2 28 I also have. The lens is breathtakingly good! Only quirk: it doesn't connect to the Leica Foto App (yet). The App might not know the "43" at the moment, therefore it is not found via Bluetooth. But I'm expecting a patch for the App hopefully very soon. EDIT: The Foto App of Leica is updated now - it sees the 43! :-)
I appreciate this video a lot. Carlo has a great eye and the way this video was presented is helpful to make a good decision, especially with the write up as well. M11-D w/50mm Summarit for Artwork and Q3 43 for Family & Friends/Weather.
All the photos you took favor the 43mm that’s why they look great, but you didn’t take any that really favor the 28mm. Some wide angle portraits would be dope to see!
My 28 served me well, being the only camera I took to Italy & France for six weeks, and to Japan for four weeks. Nonetheless, my favourite focal length has always been around 40mm, so a lot of my photos taken with the 28 have been cropped. I exchanged my 28 for a 43 and instantly happy that I did; do not look for my 43 to appear on eBay any time soon.
I want to like it but the concept makes so much more sense on a medium format, digital crop of 100mp, 16bit raw. Shallow dof, a curved medium format sensor paired with a fixed APO lense and modern interface and colour science features would be amazing
so tempting to go for the 43 but 9 times out of 10 I prefer your compositions with the 28mm . I think the 43 will be to tight . you can always get closer , but cant always step back I guess
I do mostly Landscape/travel photography, so i think the 28 will be more versatile/flexible. with the 60mp sensor I can always crop in but there are times you just cant move a few steps back especially on hills/mountains. I was definitely in the 50mm camp and thought that it's the best alround focal length. And the 28mm lens on the Q3 held me back for quite some time from buying it even though I really liked the whole concept and the looks of that camera. I hoped that Leica would bring a 50mm version of the Q3 sometime in the future. I thought that this would be the perfect camera for me. But at one point I could not resist any longer and bought the Q3 anyway. And when I had the camera I started to love the 28mm more and more each day. So much that now 80% of the time I'm using the Q3. What focal length you prefer definitely depends on what you are doing. If you are photographing mostly people or pets or smaller details of some scene, the 43mm is definitely better. But for me, doing mostly street and travel photography, I now prefer the 28mm. And from 28mm I can always crop to 43mm if I need to while I cannot crop to 28mm from the Q3 43. But of couse I will have to try the 43mm version. Maybe it will change my mind (again)?
The bickering over this camera has been insane. Leica being a luxury choice, I thought they were immune to misunderstanding the preferences of others. Nope! Everyone just raging about why anyone would choose a camera you "can't crop out" vs a version you "can crop in." So stupid.
Great comparison! Thanks for the video :) I was scratching my head while watching it as I already have the Q3 28. The sense of scale, especially in the photo of that big yellow camera building, is apparently better in the 43. At least for my eyes, but still, changing to a 43 for a fixed-lens camera might kill a bit of versatility. The APO feat, though, and its MFT charts make this lens technically a perfect marvel! It's impressive, and that photo of the boy fishing shows it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not the lens itself that "compresses " the BG. It's purely the PERSPECTIVE compression acting. So, if you're at exactly the same distance of the subject with both cameras, obviously, the FOV is different, but if you crop in the 28mm closer to 43mm, you should get similar BG "compression." That's what makes me think that stepping back is much harder in many situations, such as in an old town in Europe, than stepping forward.
Thanks for watching! We found the 43mm does pull the background close and magnifies the mountain range and street lights more accurately to scale when using the crop modes. Even though you can use both 75 and 90mm crops on both cameras, the 28mm's background is pushed out. An example can found in our blog post in the description. Much like how the 28 teaches photographers to utilize the entire frame, the 43 teaches you to be a bit more decisive and calculated.
Leica made a huge mistake with the 43mm. Before you had no choice but now you are start thinking of the limitations of having only one lens. And which mm is the best.
My view is take both. AFA the difference in f stops, it is only 1/2 of a stop difference so going on and on about that seems a waste of energy. It is not the stop but the rendering that appeals-one over the other perhaps. Plus the APO construction of the new 43. Keep in mind a true Summilux is 1.4 in Leica terms and not 1.7. I have found with owning each Q in 9 years that I too often was cropping my 28mm images and that is why I will get and use the new 43mm much more. To each is own and yes some images call for 28 and not 43.
2:45 How has no one pointed out yet that this is incorrect? Keeping the same distance, from the subject, there is no difference in background compression if you crop either the Q3 or Q3 43 to equivalent focal lengths.
Useful review I like the F1.7 I had very good results from the Q2, 47 megapixels I would use the Q343 for portraits although the high resolution might be unflattering Very nifty design
@@Ibz87 I'm using the 43 focal length for everyday/street use for almost a decade. I also use it for professional portraits, theater shootings and even orthodox christenings. This focal length never failed me, for me is the ideal one as i don't need to "frame" or think before shoot, everything is so natural. 28 and 35 are too wide and unnatural.
Have you put a filter on the 43mm and then go to Macro mode? It doesn't work!!!! A non-starter for me if you cannot add an UV filter to protect your investment.
@@chrisbogart687 Why? So that you can use the macro setting which extends the lens inside the lens hood outwardly. If you use a normal filter it blocks the lens from moving fully into the macro setting.
Very useful review, thank you. I understood once more why I am still and ever more fascinated by the incredible original 28 of the Q3! I just think that the 43 is simply... too flat for my taste.
I've watched 25 videos about the new 43 and this is by far the most helpful one. Well done.
We appreciate that! Thank you so much for watching.
totally agree

Because some people want an APO lens and because 43mm or 40mm is a nice focal length
„…but you can always move closer“ No, you can‘t
Well the beauty is 43 is closer to 35 , 28 always cropping in unless doing landscapes offcourse… but at least get full quality on 43

Yes, they are the same diameter and tread size.
I would definitely pick the Q3 43, as it’s better suited for street photography and people. Now the bigger problem, getting the money to afford one!
The Minilux cosplaying as a Q, I think I would like this better than the 24mm err I mean 28mm Summilux.

The colors and image is nicer on the 43 IMO. Probably a result of a better lens and not the different fl.
agreed! thanks for watching!
Is the 43 a true 43mm or is it somewhat wider like the Q3?
are you sure that lens compression exists?
Thanks for this - the comparison of compression between crops to equivalent focal length was nice.

The bickering over this camera has been insane. Leica being a luxury choice, I thought they were immune to misunderstanding the preferences of others. Nope! Everyone just raging about why anyone would choose a camera you "can't crop out" vs a version you "can crop in." So stupid.
I'll just get both
Great comparison! Thanks for the video :)
I was scratching my head while watching it as I already have the Q3 28.
So, if you're at exactly the same distance of the subject with both cameras, obviously, the FOV is different, but if you crop in the 28mm closer to 43mm, you should get similar BG "compression."
That's what makes me think that stepping back is much harder in many situations, such as in an old town in Europe, than stepping forward.
Does the shutter speed only go up to 2000?
Yes, 1/2000 is the max on the mechanical shutter and 1/16000 on the electronic shutter.
@@CameraWestTV Thank you.
need between 28mm and 43mm, which is why there is such a high demand for 35mm q series. Don't think leica will provide you that sweet stuff
The photos look warmer & more popped on Q3/43 compared to Q3. I like 43mm for sure
Has anyone tested the new 43mm to see if its a true 43mm, so many say the 28mm is more like a 26mm
Leica made a huge mistake with the 43mm. Before you had no choice but now you are start thinking of the limitations of having only one lens. And which mm is the best.
I will order one.
43mm is the way, in an ideal world I would trade that 43mm f/2.0 for a zoom 24-50 f/2.8 (sony has made this lens)
First video to make me chose 28 over 43
My view is take both.
This reaffirmed my decision to buy an M.
Yea man.. I was thinking the same thing. I'm thinking christmas time.Even the M11 has issues i like that as a proper rangerfinder.
The 35 apo-M is a great alternative!
Carlo my boi hit me with that new 43mm bay BEE
good review
Thanks for watching!
2:45 How has no one pointed out yet that this is incorrect? Keeping the same distance, from the subject, there is no difference in background compression if you crop either the Q3 or Q3 43 to equivalent focal lengths.
I definitely prefer the 28mm
Useful review
I like the F1.7
I had very good results from the Q2, 47 megapixels
I would use the Q343 for portraits although the high resolution might be unflattering
Very nifty design
Thanks for sharing!
Just make a 35 for gods sake. Its the x100vi for me till then.
I have used 28, 35 and 43. The difference between 35 and 43 is the more or less the same as between 28 and 35.
Is huge.
@@Pan.Jan. yeh definitely. 43 is way too tight for everyday use
@@Pan.Jan. I guess we are all different. I mainly shoot street and documentary style travel photography and find 35 to be perfect.
That's what Im sayin! I wonder why they settled on 43...
支持🎉做的太棒了!
Merci très intéressant au moins on peut comparer les focales
Have you put a filter on the 43mm and then go to Macro mode? It doesn't work!!!! A non-starter for me if you cannot add an UV filter to protect your investment.
You need a VERY VERY thin filter perhaps without front threads and under 2mm thickness..
@@flgrove but why? And who makes them? Leica doesn’t.
There is no such thing as compression. You can crop the 28 to 43 and get the same perspective, it is just like a 43mm f/2.6 (with “only” 23 MPx).
The Q3 28 looks more natural. The 43 is putting black lines where they don’t exist
this video just proved 35mm is the sweet spot for the Q
Thank you for so many photo examples, mostly all of the videos only briefly showed any examples
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!
The IQ on the 43 is significantly better, no contest.
music is too loud
I cant imagine something more dumb than buying a fixed lense camera for lots of money.
