Have you ever wondered why professional photographers often have better images than yours? What makes them so good? Well in this video, we're going to dive in to all of the things that separate the beginners from the pros.
Where better to demonstrate the tips in this video than on the beautiful cypress tree swamps of Texas. I've even got Michael Shainblum on hand to lend some words of wisdom.
For once, Amanda takes over the paddling as we rent a lovely canoe. This enables me to reach some amazing locations so that I can shoot long exposures with the telephoto lens.
I get trolled by a paddler who says I'm not his favourite photographer, how rude! Shainblum photobombs a magical wildlife moment so I make him pay by suggesting he sucks my toes. Weirdly, he's not very into it.
I generously offer to adjust Michaels camera bag straps so that his shirt spuds can enjoy a little lift but I think he's offended. I make it up to him by trading him a copy of 'Chasing Awe' in return for his wireless lav mic. He's a hard man to please.
I also give you a demo of how to understand the way light affects a scene simply by returning later in the day when the light is much softer. Naturally, I get the shot.
Will Michael look into my eyes and what's his best tip to improve your landscape photography? What should you do when making eye contact with the swamp creature and what's Amanda's face like?

That swampy sunrise image is cracking Gav. When you get results like this, you know it was worth all that effort.
Michael talks really well about how to set up a shot and not get into the water if you don’t need to.
The short knobby things are cypress knees, not saplings. Their function is not fully understood but they grow from the roots of the cypress trees. My fave shot was the last one. I liked the horizontal splashes of color and contrast caused by the shoreline, leaves and the water plants. I also like how there is a soft, glowing effect, framed the the dark trees on either side of the frame.

Great video!! Those are called Cypress Knuckles or Cypress Knees sticking out of the water and are part of the trees root system. They are cool looking

One of the funniest, most enjoyable AND educational videos so far this year. Bloody brilliant. And thank goodness you left out the Shainblum poison-extraction-from-the-crotch test shots. That might have been more than my bowels could handle this early in the morning.

For that last “pano” you can actually use a longer focal length and stitch some images to have a final image with less image loss and better resolution… sometimes works some times it doesn’t
The photos are epic. The shaded trees with the reflected sunlight at bottom is my pick as best shot. Great advice on commitment too. I really need to pull my finger out and get up early.
That first shot of the sunrise in the swamp is wonderful! So much atmosphere! The second with the bookended trees was worth the entire trip! Beautiful detail! Thanks for all the tips and examples Gavin! That snakebite skit was hilarious. "You've got to get some good suction ..." 😂

I've got to say, the images were amazing on both channels.
I'm not sure how you guys get the courage to risk your expensive gear like that. I've hit stumps I couldn't see in kayaks and it nearly flips me over.

Excellent video with usual mix of photography and comedy. All very useful facts especially the one on composition. As a moto Cross photographer it's hard at times to compose a shot without a distracting figure or advertisement in the background. Well done Michael for trying to keep a straight face. Brilliant. When I first got started over 30 years ago, I met a landscape photographer out here in the mountains in Utah.
He said the secret to great photos is to stand in front of cool subjects ( with good light of course). Made me glad I lived in Utah ( the only place I shoot). Saved a lot of money on travel. Beautiful shots G man .

I prefer the first image - the symmetry is pleasing ... but that's why I'm not as good a photographer as you & have to watch you drone on & on & on about 'Chasing Awe' 🙂
Awesome video and beautiful images! My tip for swamp photography? High shutter speeds. So you can shoot on the move. You see, alligators look at unmoving prey as an easy lunch. If you're always on the move, then the alligator has to constantly calculate distance, target speed, and angle of attack. Sometimes they decide it's not worth it and go look for something that doesn't require as much geometry. Alligators hate geometry...
I have loved this series from the bayoux, the pics are just so different and the colours are great when you get the light. Almost enough to make me want to head out there... but then again, maybe I'll stick to Croydon.
Shame that Thornton Heath pond was filled in a long time ago. That might have rivalled the bayou shots
Really great video. Lots of laughs and even better photography. I love the patience, dedication, and discomfort you choose to endure to get the shot. It makes your books, videos, and work to educate others, that much more valuable. I've learned a lot and it's definitely inspired me to get even better images.

Thanks for yet another fabulous video and absolutely gorgeous images. Where you asked which of two we like, my choice is the one at 6.30, i.e. the first one of the two trees book ending the middle trees, because the reflection is more beautiful and the colours are amazing.
Hahaha, the dude that rocked up and talked shit was the perfect character for that bit.
My acceptable level of discomfort is holiday inn express, but i prefer westins, their beds are like your favorite light, soft. I'm dedicated to snoozing the alarm 4, maybe 5 times before throwing it across the room and going back to sleep. After a large brunch and a post brunch nap I stare at my camera for maybe 45 minutes, then watch photographers on youtube for 3 or 5 hours. Then I head out for dinner since it's already dark outside. After a few beers, and a overrated trendy chicken sandwich, I get an uber to the local takeout noodle shop and head back to the hotel to get a good night sleep incase i get up early enough to take photos tomorrow.

This reminds me of a video you did a few years ago. In that video you said that the key to getting better shots was to "work harder". I know that sounds simple, but it's true. Want better photos? Then work harder to get those photos. Most people aren't willing to do that. And that is really what separates amateurs from professionals.

Those short root things sticking out of the water are called cypress knees. I have one my grandfather cut and gave to my mother 65 years ago.

Hey Gavin, great stuff, can I make a recommendation to always wear a belt with waders especially in a boat.
Great tips with examples, thank you. Your second with the singular tree. Reasons, the moss to me it's acting like fog . Keeping it from becoming busy. Then with the water it just strengthens your eye to see the subject. Then you've got the color seeming to float through on a breeze at the top third. Love the shots with the other photographer in the kayak too. The "Bloody Tourists" LOL It was so close, not bothered by you guys at all. I am an artist with an injury from a patient, I lost most of the use in my dominant hand, it's nerve damage. I'm left handed. Thank God a camera is set up for a right handed person. I can use a camera and a tripod though. I want you to know from you, Thomas Heaton, Adam Gibbs, Ben Horne, Simon Baxter, and Nick Page. I was smiling when Nick's name came up. I just wanted you to know how important all of you are to me. Thank you all for the countless tips and inspiration, and hours enjoyment from all of you.

Hi Gavin, I love your videos. They are an enrichment in my everyday life. I would prefer the second picture. But Grumpie would have made the picture in landscape format. There's too much water at the bottom. And of course you are right when you say that it depends on the location. The camera almost doesn't matter.

Knees , they are cypress knees...lungs and stabilzer's together. edit: when I was in the Okefenokee, my guide told me stories about the snakes...hanging from the trees. I didn't see any but there were lots of gators.

Of the first two swamp images, I prefer the one at 6:50. It's simpler and cleaner. IMO simple works best, most of the time.

Loved the tips Gav, I wasn't sure at first if it was a piss take, because you were standing angle deep in a warm lake talking about dangerous locations, (it reminded me of David Brent from the office) but I have seen you do plenty of extreme stuff to get the shot. Loving the swamp images.

All this talk makes my head hurt. Trond Westby had a good video today about perseverance and sacrifice to get awesome shots of a purple sandpiper on an ice slickened rock with the tide coming in. Your friend, Thomas Heaton, had a wonderful three part video this month of his trip to Mongolia to photograph the snow leopard. That was some real hardship and sacrifice in blistering cold and wind for some marvelous images of exotic species covered in snow on the frozen, windswept Mongolian Stepp. You, Gavin, are racking up some really enviable shots on your location in the bayou. But you aren't suffering enough. I need to see some real life threatening action from you to fill up a lot of the space you are filling with talk. Maybe a cottonmouth moccasin in the floor of the boat. That's usually good for a blood pressure spike and some water inside your waterproof waders. Or a run-in with the swamp people while the theme music from Deliverance plays in the background. I'll look forward to next week and I want to see some suffering and sacrifice to go along with the stunning cypress swamp images. 🤣

FYI -- those exposed roots @ 22:39 are technically called pneumatophores. They help the bald cypress respire in waterlogged conditions. They're part of the main tree's root system, not baby trees.

I think that bird that wandered into your shot is called a Limpkin.
Cypress knees
You know those hunters you were worried about lately - you know, when you wore the Vest of Midsummer Sunrise so they wouldn't mistake you for a moose (an understandable possibility, the resemblance is striking)? You should have talked to them about a suitable firearm (something of elephant calibre would do) to stalk _Michaelis Shainblumenus_ when the opportunity presented itself, which it plainly has. A trophy head mounted on an oaken plaque, or an offcut of ¾" Strandboard at least, would look spiffing in the church khazi, donchaknow.

“Sick Man Blues” was an ok choice for music, but this felt more like “Dueling Banjos” from Deliverance. Like the first shot better, complimentary color is great. 2nd shot was too busy for me.

Superb location and loving this series. A little idea and maybe a project for the missus to do to solve your LCD framing problem. Get some black card and cut out the frame dimensions you want. Carry them in your pocket and if needed simply place whichever crop you think may work over the screen and voila. Just don't get them mixed up with the s**t tickets, could prove to be painful. 🙂
