  • 2 Beautiful tomahawk ribeyes seared on Grill Grates using the Rec Tec 590!
    • Started with two 35 oz Tomahawk Ribeyes, Prime Cut.
    • Salt brined on all sides of the Tomahawks and put in refrigerator for 24 hours.
    • Set up the Rec Tec to run at 250.
    • Placed the two tomahawks on until they reached about 75 degrees and then turned them over to promote even cooking until 110.
    • Turned the grill up to 550 degrees to get the Grill Grates as hot as we could. They actually were reading about 600 degrees.
    • Seared on the flat side of the Grill Grates for 1 minute each side 2 times and removed them.
    • Let them rest for about 10 to 15 minutes before cutting into them.
    Summary: Prime Tomahawk Rib Eyes turned out perfect! The Grill Grates are a nice addition for my pellet grill!

    I buy everything based on reviews. Some said this was hard to put together th-cam.com/users/postUgkxCx5fHawkK9OoV-ojFrY8JLnZrFwAmvUt some guy said 2 hours and 2 beers later. I didn't drink beer like I was going to. I didn't feel like going to the store. I'm assuming I would have had at least 3. I took my time. Stepped outside for a cigarette break a couple times but all in all it was about a 3 hour project for me but it wasn't like it was difficult or anything . Only pictures but everything is pretty organized and labeled although I didn't see any #s on the actual pieces like it shows in the diagrams. Only the screws were labeled. On the cardboard part of the packaging on the back side. I put it together in my living room too. It wasn't supposed to rain today but it's Michigan and I couldn't wait so I put it together in my living room. Without beer but beer would definitely have made it more fun that's for sure. I'm giving this a 5 for easy assembly. I'll update after it stops raining when I can take it out of my living room and cook some food on it. Hope this helps at least for people who think they can't put this together because I did and you can too . And there are extra screws. I got nervous and immediately came here to see if others had the same experience and they have. You're not doing it wrong. There will be extra screws. Be patient. Don't rush it. Drink beer. Happy assembling

      Not sure if you coming from a Weber gas or charcoal, but you will not have an issue learning. It is more like a gas grill with great temperature control and acts like mostly indirect, but can get the temps up pretty nice. Good luck! Cheers!

    I know this video is a little old but I’ve been researching reviews of the grill grates and every video is of people just creating grill marks, there great to look at but do nothing to flavor the steak. I almost scream at every video trying to tell the people to turn the damn grates over and do an actual sear😂. Thanks for this video, you may have convinced me to give the grates a try👍

      It is not the ideal way to sear steaks if you have other options, but if it is your only option it turned out really good! You wont get the crust you can with other grills. Yes, the Weber is around 22 years old and I still use it for some vegetables and when I cook something in a pan, but still going strong. Replaced the insides twice! Cheers!

    My wife got me the 590 for x-mas. Any recommendations for instant read thermos and other accessories?

    • @beers-jackofbbq
      @beers-jackofbbq  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a great Christmas gift! My 590 came with 2 temp probes and those work well. For an instant read it can depend on the budget, but I use the ChefsTemp X10, I will put the link at the end of this. That is around $70. If looking for a more economic, the others I use are Thermopro, they have some for $20 and $30. But the instant read is a must for me. I use all of the other to get me close and then I verify with the instant read. I also have the small extended racks from Rec Tec, I have 2 of them. That works when doing about 10 lbs of chicken. You are limited because the height of them, but can be helpful when doing a large amount. You saw the Grill Grates and those worked nice for searing. If you have any other questions, just let me know, I am no expert, but I like good food and tools that make grilling easier! Here are the links for both instant reads, you don’t have to get these brand, but they are what I use and like. shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=1836663&u=2812985&m=111859&urllink=&afftrack= buythermopro.com/?rfsn=5780813.7984b9 Cheers!

    How long did it take to get up to searing temp? I'm debating on either this or the Pit Boss Pro Series Black Triple Function. What would your opinion be for either of those? I like the ability of a gas grill to cook quick when in need.

    • @beers-jackofbbq
      @beers-jackofbbq  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I remember correctly it only took around 10 to 15 min to get to searing temps, but I did turn up the grill on the last flip when warming up the steaks to get a head start. Not sure if the triple function include a searing spot with flame, but I think that is a great option. The 590 is a great grill and I did get a very nice sear, it is not my go to grill for steaks as I have other options. We like to show how to cook different cuts on all grills. So hard for me to give a comparison for you, not familiar with the Pit Boss. I still have a gas grill, but it only gets used for extra cooking space when needed and I do corn on the cob and clams on that one. Thanks for watching! Cheers!

    Are these the grill grates sold from Rec tec? I’ve been thinking about getting them. How is the clean up and can you do smash burgers on them. Thanks for all your help

    • @beers-jackofbbq
      @beers-jackofbbq  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Grill Grates I have are only 18 1/2” and the ones they sell for the 590 are 19 1/2. I actually contacted Grill Grates because I wanted a set I could fit in all of my grills. Mine did have 3 panels as well. I usually only have needed 2 of them at a time, but always good to have the 3rd one. Plus, Jack cut the corners on the one panel to fit the kettles and work better in the Kamado Joe. I have not done smash burgers on these yet, but I have seen others do it. I usually only use the flat, I am not a grill marks person and like the overall sear better. I hope that helps and please let me know if you have any other questions? Cheers!

    How long do you let a steak rest? And does it stay hot?

    • @beers-jackofbbq
      @beers-jackofbbq  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We usually let this size steak rest 10 to 15 minutes. I usually put them in a pan and I cover them while they are resting. The one thing to be careful of is the temp that you pull them because they can rise 5 to 10 degrees while they rest. They will still be decently hot/warm when you eat them. The resting is important to maintain some of the juices in the steak. Hope that helps and thanks for watching! Cheers!

    I bought a Rec Tec last year and really enjoy it as well. There's not to many pellet smoker's in today's market that can get to temps over 500 deg. I have the smaller RT-340 and have gotten it up to 634 deg. I used cast iron grates for searing. I'm definitely interested in getting some Aluminum searing grates, looks like the surface area is superior.

    I've seen a few videos you've posted, and really appreciate you using the 590, as it's the only thing I have - and don't really planning on buying anything else in the future. I'm a little bit tired of smoking those though, and miss grilling to get a nice sear. You've used Grill Grates as the term a few times in the description and comments, can you tell me where you bought them from? As in are they the ones listed on Recteqs site, or the brand name Grill Grates? Thanks for your time man!

      Hey Mark, thanks for checking out our channel! We try and show the 590 at least once a month in our videos. It is an impressive grill! The Grill Grates I have are only 18 1/2” and the ones they sell for the 590 are 19 1/2. I actually went through Grill Grates website, you can usually find some discount codes if you sign up with them. I got 10% off when I ordered mine. The reason I got the 18 1/2” is to work in all the grills I had at that time. Mine did have 3 panels as well. I usually only have needed 2 of them at a time, but always good to have the 3rd one. I hope that helps and please let me know if you have any other questions? Cheers!

    Just found your channel and subscribed! Any chance we could see you do a brisket on your Rec Tec? I like your BBQ style!

      Glad you found us and appreciate the nice comment! Thanks for the suggestion, I actually want to show a brisket on the Rec Tec and hopefully will shoot that soon. Just an FYI, we are a 2 man team and shoot in advance, so we have a bunch of videos already shot, but will try and shoot this and move it up in the schedule. Cheers!

    You need try to lower your sear temp down With thicker steaks. And clean your grease tray to avoid a fire

    • @beers-jackofbbq
      @beers-jackofbbq  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! I do use foil on my grease tray and just changed it before this cook, that fire was just from the drippings of these steaks. I do like to sear at higher temps, especially on the pellet grill since this one only goes up to 550. I have had other grills to high for searing and learned I like around 550 to 600 degrees for the sear. Appreciate the comment your perspective for sure! Cheers!

      LOL! I am actually not a grill mark fan and like the overall sear, so I bought these to only use the flat side. Appreciate you watching! Cheers!

      I am actually not a fan of the deep grill marks and like more of an overall sear. I bought the Grill Grates to use the flat side. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
