  • Today, we're stirring the pot once again in the hunting world, delving into a debate that never seems to lose steam: heavy arrows versus light arrows. Every hunter has their own opinion on the matter, and we're diving headfirst into this controversial discussion. While we've touched on this topic before, today we're going deeper, tackling a specific question: how does the weight of an arrow affect its ability to achieve pass-throughs and precise shot placement on big game animals? We give our own opinions on the debate as well as dive into a view past studies to provide some facts on arrow speed based on their weights. We even break down our bow set ups to provide some in-field insights to inform the discussion. So buckle up, because things are about to get interesting in the hunting community once again.

34:02 “not gonna happen?” Have you shot the single bevels? Whenever I shoot them in my targets, when I pull them out it’s never a straight pull, it is always untwisting itself out.
35:50 what were Joel’s test mediums? hopefully not foam targets or ballistic gel. I’ve heard those mediums give very closely consistent results. Meaning there all within close proximity, with all differing weights. Whereas, if you shoot basically anything else, the results drastically vary with different weighted arrows.
45:21 yes, KE and Momentum are probably the same. BUT if you’ve read Ashby on KE and Momentum, he talks about not all momentum being equal. Momentum Is mass x velocity. And so Momentum can be derived more from velocity, or from mass. But momentum derived mostly from mass penetrates better because mass doesn’t change on impact whereas speed does. Check out this vid about just that > th-cam.com/video/5vqdvUnUHEo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=m3zRd0aT4mFMd8Md
50:33 heavy arrows dropping more and deer being able to jump the string on a heavy arrow may not necessarily be accurate. Check this clip 1:21:45 from Bryan at DaySix his view on that th-cam.com/video/GxO5lLzkbV0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=GhTIxUdML6XqDVgf
Lastly, if you want, check out my penetration test I did on water jugs (which seem to be a pretty fair test medium) with a super heavy arrow vs a heavy arrow. th-cam.com/users/shortsS_46YgYRcbw?si=V-l9BhZuj50p9IOC

Speed vs penetration is a give and take preference that varies from person to person and usually changes with every bad field experience you have. I watch channels on both ends of the arrow spectrum. They are all successful hunters. I attribute that to the time and dedication they put into their craft.

For sure! No matter what set up you use or prefer, it comes down to the amount of time you spend practicing with it and gaining that confidence!

Great episode as always guys. About 3 seasons ago I bumped my arrow weight up to 600 grains from 400 grains. I do realize that it comes at a cost of arrow drop. But, I like the confidence in knowing that I'll have the momentum to open any wide cut mechanical.
To Warren's point, I'm right at the bottom end of speed for my trophy ridge react. I'd bet another 10 grains and at least my 50 and 60 yards pins would be hitting pretty low.
Keep up the good work gentlemen 👍

That's what it's all about right there though, being confident in your set up!

Man, at the 20 minute mark you can tell these guys shouldn't be having a podcast about arrows. They don't really know anything.

That was a good talk, but of course the broadhead has big impact on the penetration. Been shooting whitetails and pigs in texas with a bow for 16yrs and I've tried them all. Definitely matters, yall should talk about heads some as well.

We have discussed broadheads in one of our first ever podcast episodes, but we do want to discuss them again after doing some more extensive testing on a course so we can have very specific facts and information to share.

Warren, I have to bust chops once and awhile, makes things more interesting!! 😅 Got your nocks today, I’ll comment on Easton’s Raised Nocks video about them. Another great conversation, arrows are a very important part of hunting gear. I shoot a mom and pop brand called Deer Crossing Archery, very good arrows, love them and they are awesome to customize your carbon arrows any way you want them and are very inexpensive. I shoot a balanced arrow .001 straightness, 300 spine, 125gr broadhead with a 50gr brass insert, with my 30” draw it sits around 500gr all-in. As far as a deer reaction, I think it all depends on distance of the shot, I feel anything under 20 yards it doesn’t matter speed, anything over 20 yards I’m aiming low, but I wont be shooting over 35 yards any way.

Makes sense that there would be a sweet spot for penetration because your bow setup is not going to be able to move such a heavy arrow at the same velocity. If you could send an 800 grain arrow at 450fps you could probably get a pass-through on a hippo long ways, but it’s just not possible because we don’t have 40” draw length and pull back 180#.

Hows that pie David? 😂😂😂 Light Arrows for days! I want those pins close! I was shooting Easton Hexx for about a month, the nock ends started to split and I took them back and switched back to Gold Tip Hunters and have shot them all but one season shooting 402 grain overall. I did try some heavy arrows that were 11.2 gpi for 1 season and used the wrong pin on a booner at 36 yards, glanced off the top of his back and away he went. The distance between the pins was too much of a head game for me.
