A beauty for sure. You hit the nail on the head with comments on the date circle ... Too expensive to have a date background that doesn't match the dial color. This is where a mechquartz dominates - complicated movements needing to be slim yet give a smooth second hand sweep ... For a lot less money. All that being said - good on Seiko for taking a punt on the high end mechanical chrono market. This will sell.
Thanks for the show, Russ, fantastic one again! That's a beauty of a Seiko right there! I recently picked up a pearl-dial "ghost" Alpinist the other day on a whim, and I must admit, I'm falling a bit in love with Seiko again... I'd let this one pass I think, it's a little too pricey and too chunky for me right now, but I'm really liking the more vintage-inspired pieces they're doing lately. Makes me wonder where they're going next!
Today I wore the same Casio a1100, I Love that watch. Now at my night shift I'm wearing my casio DW5040 40th anniversary. I got it for my 40th birthday last week from my wife. ❤
If that price has got you down, you can get a similar look from Seiko's mechaquartz-powered SSB429 for a fraction of the price - and it wears much better due to being thinner and lighter.
Outstanding watch and great review. And.... please take note that I spent 5.5 K on a Seiko PS Spring Drive GMT that is a Grand Seiko with a different logo. These watches have value, must pay for that considering people spend more money in watches that has less value! Cheers from Italy
good review....was interested in this as I'm looking for a panda, and the inspiration from a 6138 made it intriguing, but it does look too thick....my search continues....
This just made me realize that I can't think of a non Grand Seiko, Seiko mechanical chronograph that isn't solar quartz. Impressive and very much needed for the brand! (I also love the circular date display in general. So much more refined than a square cut out, IMHO). Any thing under 15mm is fine, IMHO. Somebody does need to go to Seiko HQ and hold them hostage until they ditch all their pin and collar links, LOL. So ridiculous.
Inclusion of what the wife said is fantastic, great review, keep up the good work.Wish I had more funds to add more Seiko's to my collection, I'm working on a business to create custom watch boxes to fund my addiction.
Sitting here, broke and with my small wrists 😅 but hey it's a beautiful watch! But if I would have so much money to spend (yeah completly different watch and style) I'd get myself a Nomos 39mm Club Sport
I own the Seiko Prospex SSC911 Solar quartz chronograph. I paid under $650 USD for it. It is the panda dial with a domed sapphire crystal. I'm completely happy with it.
Enjoyed that one, thanks Russell! I'm a huge fan of the 6138 and 6139 watches, and for the price they are a real bargain right now. You can easily find a nice one under $400 at the moment. I just find it hard to imagine paying so much for a modern version, especially when the old ones were so much more compact.
I used to think this was too expensive, but then I became obsessed with the silver dial Carrera Glassbox, which is much more expensive. I’m seriously considering getting the silver dial version of this now (SRQ047). The size is a little scary for my 6.7” wrist but I can manage it. Probably. Hmmm.
It’s a good looking watch but if that’s the best Seiko has to offer they need to keep trying. Too many negatives for me. Great review. Have a great day!
Liked the look of this watch when I first saw it, almost ordered the panda, then today I found an offer on this model I just couldn’t refuse. Had to watch this video again to see your thoughts. Hopefully I won’t regret this. 😁
@@johnt1115 Hi, yes I bought it. Lovely watch, I was a little underwhelmed at first, but the more you look and feel, the more the quality shows. It’s an expensive Seiko, but it would be a bargain Grand Seiko. Probably 3 times the cost.
You can get a SRQ029/SBEC005 that uses the same case and movement and a better bracelet in mint condition for about $2500-3000 on the second hand market. I think it is a nicer looking watch IMO. This is a great watch as well and having owned a SRQ029 they are very well made.
Awesome looming watch, I iwnvan SRQ023 which uses the same movement. Excellent movement too btw, vastly superior in operation to my tissot PRS 515 which uses the more basic cam lever valjoux 7750.
It's a price level higher than the Astrons, and they are quite different beasts. It is a pretty thing but that's a lot of wedge for a Seiko, you're into a whole different level and brands like Tag etc are coming into the equation. A tough sell.
Remember this is also a nod to original chrono which beat Zenith, zenith el primero should been called el segundo but the swiss were so furious they just said "No we live in alternative reality where seiko doesnt exist so we will stick with the original name".
Have to say, pin and collar sends shivers down my spine! I'd rather have push pins than P&C. Seiko should commission any number of Chinese brands to make a screw link bracelet ... They seem to have cracked that code even on sub $300 watches. Nice Seiko, though. Wonderful show!
We need to get on to the brands to give date or no date options, it can't be that hard to do. The price isn't too bad, maybe at 2000 and the changes you suggest.....no Prospex badge, no date window and even a bit more lume so we can hit the 9 👍
Bracelet has distinct Omega vibes which I don’t like however dial looks great. 14.6mm tho is similar to the Tudor Chrono (lovely watch) that got pilloried for thickness.
I would expect Seiko chrono with 8R movement to have a higher price tag. Honestly, I don't think i complain that much. But I really feel that Seiko should chase the classic 6138 look. For me, that is the design of a perfect Seiko chrono.
In my opinion, the price is justified. In contrast to the new King Seiko models, we are talking about a high-end chronograph here. Nevertheless, Seiko's pricing policy is difficult to understand.
It's really a chunky boy 😂... Looks more like a helmet but not in the way of the 6139-7100 Darth Vader... I don't know, is quite handsome dial, except for the date window that looks like an after thought. Definitely not cuff friendly watch, rather more like a cuff Buster... Or a knuckle duster 😂. Thank you for the video.
totally agree with you on that silly proooospexxx logo and datewheel, thank God they are there though, otherwise I would be buying yet an other chrono 🙂
It's nice, very nice indeed! But at 2500 pounds? Perhaps not so much! Tonight I ordered my second Arnie, a Tropical, for $349AU (about 180 pounds). Now that watch, at that price, is very, very , very, nice - and with the change... well, it could be a very nice Christmas indeed!!
So true. I'm a sucker for Seiko too but their pricing since of late is completely bonkers. Their last true value offerings were with the Turtles, Arnies, Monsters, Samurais (pre-"King" versions) and a few others. Things went downhill after that. £2500 for an automatic chronograph may be "affordable" in the grand scheme of things but I doubt many people want to spend that kind of money for a Seiko on the dial when that's luxury brand territory.
@@Mettalchin Interesting too is that a key feature of this watch is the mechanical 8R48 Caliber, yet the identical Seiko caliber albeit designated NE86 is sold to 3rd part manufacturers whose watches can be bought for a fraction of this price! So while it is a lovely watch, I'd rather spend my hard earned on the also beautiful Seiko Speedtimer SSC911P which is about 17% of the cost (in Australia) of this one. And is more accurate too. So while the 8R48 is a wonderful movement, it doesn't really justify this price imho.
Good points. I think the most I'd personally pay for a Seiko is for the Alpinist. For anything more than that, there are just too many equivalent or better offerings from other reputable brands including Swiss ones. I'm happy with my SNA411 Flightmaster, it'll probably be the first and last Seiko chronograph I ever own unless I get my hands on a white dial Flighty someday 😉
@@Mettalchin Flightys are very cool, and yes a (rare) white dial (is that cloud white?) would be even cooler. I'd love one of those! Meanwhile I'm happy with the Seiko SSC015P1 Solar Chrono'. I'd still love to get my hands on one but they're becoming hard to come by, at least for a good enough price, sigh 😮💨 Quartz watches are perfect GADA watches, especially Solars. I'm yet to get my hands on a Solar Seiko but if I did, it would either be the Solar Chrono you have or a good old fashioned Arnie 😎
they’re continuing to move further upmarket, which is fair enough, but this is going to feel like a lot of money for a Seiko Prospex chronograph for most potential buyers.
I was shocked to learn that San Martin use the exact same polishing technique on some of their watches. Of course, I'm not saying it's the same quality as Grand Seiko, but it's just another reason that seiko needs to step up their game in the entry to mid level. They are charging more and more and still giving us basic movements and cheap bracelets and qc.
I'm normally one to criticise Seiko for their pricing in the Prospex line, but in this case I think it's fair given the 8R movement. It's when they charge £1200-1500 for a regular time and date-only 6R35 that I get annoyed. Agree it looks too large/thick for many wrists. My 6139-6012 chronograph from the 1970s is only 13.8mm thick whilst also packing a vertical clutch and column wheel, amazing really.
I had a similar size watch years ago and if the band had even a little bit of play, it would simply flop around to whatever was the downward position of my wrist. Reminded me of those exercise weights you use. Also, NOBODY needs a date function on a mechanical watch any more. We all have phones for that. And, of course, let's be honest. $3000 USD is right in the middle of some very nice Swiss movement options. I don't see anyone other than the most die-hard Seiko fan buying one as it's very expensive and 3k+ is suddenly a lot of money. $1500 one can think of as a bit over $1000 and a splurge, and $2000... well, it's a gift or something.. but $3000... plus tax... yeah, it's competing with Rolex and the rest as it's "bling"/excess territory and at that point money isn't the issue if you can actually afford a $3000+ watch. Kind of like how nobody "stretches" their budget to buy a Ferrari. If you can afford one, you're also able to afford any other supercar out there. Normal working peasants aren't going to ever see this as an option.
I'm generaly not a huge fan of chronographs, and definitely no big fan of Seiko, but Seiko really knows how to make a great looking chronograph. The fact that a $2000 watch has a pinned bracelet is exactly why I'm not a fan of Seiko.
I'm a bit confused Russ, How come Seiko could make all those amazing looking automatic chronographs back in the day in the 70's etc but I'm sure they were much thinner back then compared to this lovely modern slab of a watch?, I thought logically the new one would be thinner?
Fantastic point ! Ok so let’s get the water proofness out of the way first the case which houses the movement has to have a certain thickness in order to be 100m waterproof . Back then I’m not sure how waterproof they needed to be for people to start asking questions!;) the 6139 and 6138 were strange movements, outdated as the date and day was changed by pushing in the crown at certain tensions and seeing them flip over. The creme del a crème was and is a Valjoux 7750. This movement mimics this. They are thick . I can’t really answer why Seiko can’t . I know Bvugari can make and automatic movements that’s 3 mil thick? Maybe today, to do that type of thinner movement doubles the cost , decreases the amount of skilled watchmakers that can do it????
i like the signed crown when it is suposed to be a "formal" or even an everyday watch, but when it is supposed to be a tool i think is better if it is not signed. I might be alone in this, i know that being signed looks better.
Look, I think what we need to really acknowledge. Here is the fact that Seco is getting back into producing somewhat affordable, automatic chronograph watches. And for me, I think this is a fantastic watch. However, the date window is definitely a dealbreaker for me, and then the dreaded ex on the dial. Can we just put that on the case back? Fantastic review, and I love your videos. Great to see this one on the channel.
I think most folks wouldn't mind a tiny date window at 4.30, considering a date complication is more useful than a chrono to a lot of folks. I don't usually mind the Prospex logo but it does stand out too much here, should've been done in a subtler colour.
Hey Russell. Love the review, but I can't help but think that the 'chronograph' is a pointless complication, at least for me. I used to think it was great, and bought a Speedy for it, but I never actually ever used it. The additional pushers spoil the case aesthetic and the extra 'machinery' used to deliver the functionality invariably add thickness to the watch. Plus, if there is a tachymeter scale, it makes for a much wider bezel making the overall watch diameter larger than it needs to be. I must admit these days I basically ignore any watch with a chronograph now.....sigh!
Thanks for great content like always! Please checkout the JDM chronos that Seiko released under Presage SARK007, 008,009 and the ones with arita dials… Those are stunning and i would dare to say nicer than this one.
Nice dial , ive really gone off chronos , years ago i loved them , strange how tastes change. The colour is lovely , very classy. The thickness is ridiculous though , its getting to the stage you could take it off the wrist and use it as a stepladder 😂 Seiko and their pricing , im a huge Seiko fan , but they are starting to turn me off. Seiko will always be the excellent sub £500 section for me. That thickness though 😮
I’d nothing against mechanical chronos, but I’d rather get a cheap quartz like the Timex Marlin chrono of which, is more beautiful, vintage looking, and worry free watch. And spend my money on the navitimer, sumo noosa or sje093.
Great review. Thanks. Too bad your wife trashed this one. Not a watch for her! This and the white dial version are very handome. Chunky monkey! Seems like many mechanical chronographs are thick . Been checking specs on many recently. Just bought my first mechanical chronograph. Seiko sbec007. Vintage style dial........thicker still. Should be fine for me. I wear mm300 all the time. Should be here tomorrow.
Tell you what Russell I think l married your wife's twin as she says exactly the same things when I add a new watch to my collection lol!! Love the channel DrPaul
I think surely it's time for the Prospex logo to go! Keep it on the packaging or stamp it on the caseback if you must, but really it's beyond a joke now...
Funny that a bracelet made specifically for the watch still looks like a poorly matched aftermarket bracelet. It looks like a good bracelet, it just doesn't match up at the end links.
One for the diehard Seiko fans at that price. No use in having a top notch dial and GS level finishing when you ruin it with a Prospex logo. This completely counters any retro vibes.
Although true for all highly polished watches, I would disagree since this watch is treated with Diashield hard coating- helps keep the polished surfaces swirl free :)
Great content Russ, lovely watch but 2.5k 😮 only the true Seiko nuts will go for this.

This one is really gorgeus. I wish they could save 1mm at least, even reducing the w.r.
Definitely a nice watch. I have recently been turned off by dates on chronos. I just don’t think it works because it usually gets squeezed in
Deal breakers for me. That round date window is hideous
What a stunner!
Are you on drugs?
Please checkout the JDM chronos that Seiko released under Presage SARK007, 008,009 and the ones with arita dials…
Those are stunning and i would dare to say nicer than this one.
Why not give Quartz movements some jewels! It has moving parts too! Except for digital watches of course.
Unbelievable but my seiko presage 60‘s Style got an sign crown😉👍🏻😂
Nice dial , ive really gone off chronos , years ago i loved them , strange how tastes change.
The colour is lovely , very classy.
The thickness is ridiculous though , its getting to the stage you could take it off the wrist and use it as a stepladder 😂
Seiko and their pricing , im a huge Seiko fan , but they are starting to turn me off.
That's not a bad price for an in house column wheel chronograph. Nice
Very nice, but looks more like it was inspired by the Forzo Enduratimer 😀
Oooooph that’s a lot of dollar for a daily beater brand
The wife is a national treasure! 😂
Nah I like their two sub dial chrono more
It looks a lot like the Bulova automatic Accu Swiss 63C117.
Nice, for a granpa bear
That’s all good and everything but I’m buying a Sinn or Hanhart for that price range.
15mm thickness… What age are Seiko living in ? The are a multinational conglomerate and can‘t do a thinner watch movement ? Why ? Please explain…
Tell you what Russell I think l married your wife's twin as she says exactly the same things when I add a new watch to my collection lol!! Love the channel DrPaul
I would rather they just reissue the 1972 as is, with an upgraded movement, like their recent GMT reissue.
Me to;)
For me the orange accents look out of place on that lovely dial
It's not as dear as the SQR029 Panda, which I have, personally I prefer mine but I like this though
I think surely it's time for the Prospex logo to go! Keep it on the packaging or stamp it on the caseback if you must, but really it's beyond a joke now...
It's definitly a cool watch, but for $2500-3000 you can get a brand new grand seiko on the grey market, I think it's really overpriced.
A GS chrono? Really?
What market is this? Brand new? Doubt it. Maybe a Seiko/GS NOS you could get at that price, but not brand new ‘GS only’ pieces.
GS has a very different design to Seiko especially this watch . Why buy a GS if someone is looking for something that looks like this
I don't think that's really the case dude
Not going to get a GS auto chrono for such a low price
i'd rather have one with solar movement to shave off the thickness.
BADASS
Funny that a bracelet made specifically for the watch still looks like a poorly matched aftermarket bracelet. It looks like a good bracelet, it just doesn't match up at the end links.
Seiko has automatic chronographs much thinner than this, the thickness has me puzzled. At that size may as well throw it in a tuna case
One for the diehard Seiko fans at that price. No use in having a top notch dial and GS level finishing when you ruin it with a Prospex logo. This completely counters any retro vibes.
Zaratsu polishing on something that's gonna get banged on every door frame the wearer meets? Not a good idea.
They need to down with the thiccness!
Although true for all highly polished watches, I would disagree since this watch is treated with Diashield hard coating- helps keep the polished surfaces swirl free :)
