Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-99) - What Happened to This Series?

- I love Star Trek. It's one of the most unique fandoms since it features multiple different properties in the same universe. Don't get me wrong, I love Star Wars, but something about Star Trek raises it to another level. There are so many shows that are unique in their own way. You have Star Trek T.O.S, Star Trek The Animated Series, Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Voyager, Enterprise, Star Trek Discovery, Star Trek Strange New Worlds, Star Trek Prodigy, Star Trek Lower Decks, and Star Trek Picard. There is something for everyone. Fans are a little bit less toxic than other fandoms. My theory is that because there are so many shows, everyone can agree on at least one show that is good. So if someone were to, let’s say, hate Prodigy, they may like Lower Decks, or maybe they think Next Generation is the only good Star Trek show. But because there are so many series, there is a better chance to link the fan love. I have met many Trekers in my life and have yet to meet someone I have nothing in common with.
One Star Trek show that I loved that tended to divide fans was Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. In it, Avery Brooks starred as Commander Benjamin Sisco. Unlike other Trek main characters, he wasn't a captain. Rather, he was a commander struggling with grief (and rage) after his wife was killed in an attack orchestrated by none other than Captain Picard when the Borg assimilated him as Locutus. The show centred partly around him being a single parent to his son, Jake, as well as his adventures commanding Deep Space Nine. It had a tremendous cast of characters, including René Auberjonois as the shape-shifter, Odo, Nana Vistor as Bajoran resistance veteran, Kira, Terry Farrell as Jadzia Dax, Alexander Siddig as Dr. Julian Bashir, Armin Shimerman's Quark, and many more. It even had some TNG holdovers like Colm Meaney as Chief O'Brien, and (later) Michael Dorn's Worf.
In this episode, we dig into how the show initially divided fans, but in hindsight is held up by many as one of the best Trek shows of all time.

Hey guys!
This episode of GBNF was made from suggestions from fans who emailed us demanding this show be covered on this series. If you want to make suggestions for future episodes of GBNF then e-mail GBNFSeries@gmail.com and maybe we’ll cover your show
You claim you love Star Trek and yet show clips of Kurtzman Trek
Just because fans demanded it, doesn’t mean you had to claim that YOU personally loved it. It’s pretty clear you didn’t watch the show. No reason to pretend.
Just because fans asked for it, doesn’t mean that you had to claim that you LOVED the show, when you clearly never watched it. You mess up pronunciations of super basic things when you read the script that someone else wrote.
Can you do Sam Raimi’s forgotten sci-fi gem, M.A.N.T.I.S? That show represented black culture and was the first black superhero on a primetime network. It was way ahead of its time, something that FOX completely dropped the ball canceling the series in 1995.
Don't lie, you obviously never saw it. So many phrases used I've heard make me think you either plagiarized a human or asked an AI to write it. Watch the retrospective 'What we Left Behind ' to learn how to pronounce names, then just embarrassingly delete this. For one thing, some in show relationships were developed AFTER seeing actor's chemistry. O'Brien and Bashir, Kira and Odo, just to name two. And how is Sisko your second favorite captain? He's THE best! More depth, development, and his story is the only one shared with us from birth to end completely. Which is all predetermined by the prophet Sarah. He talked the prophets into stopping 2400 Dominion ships coming into our quadrant which nobody else could have done.
This is the best Trek show and I will die on that hill
See you there
TNG and VOY are way better
@@eS._Te I have the high ground, do not try it

*'In the Pale Moonlight'* is a GD classic bruh

I...can...live with it.
I CAN live with it.
Computer...erase that ENTIRE log.
Best ending to a Star Trek episode EVER.
@@samueltheprideofafrikarobi9319 epic AND legendary 🥲
DS9's finest hour. Garak being the one to commithe dirty deed, (dirt cheap) was fantastic. It also gave us the "It's a FAAAKKEEE!" meme.
The episode where Sisko is dragged forward through time in leaps as his son ages trying to save him runs it close, though.
Came here to say that myself. How could he not even mention it 🙄
The Changelings being the Founders and leaders of the Dominion was DS9s answer to TNGs "Best of Both Worlds" cliffhanger. Odo meeting the female Changeling at the end of season 2 with a loving "Welcome home," then the reveal of the Vorta and Jem Hadar working for them in the premiere of season 3 was a masterful rugpull that has rarely been topped since.
One demerit in the vid for no mention of "In the Pale Moonlight" though. 9/10
The Search two-parter was the season 3 opener. There was no cliffhanger between season 2 and 3.
What? No mention of 'In the Pale Moonlight', considered one of the greatest episodes of all Trek, if not most controversial?
The guy that compiled this is not very good at what he does. By the numbers take.
@Bangyourbirdnumb I'm getting sick of creators saying everything is their favorite series, favorite game, favorite movie claiming they live on it then can't pronounce the names right.
IT'S A FAKE!!!!
I think I can live with it.
@@jasonfischer8946 "Computer, erase that entire personal log entry."
"...two galaxies that are 70,000LY away from each other?" Two parts of the galaxy*
He also occasionally says things like "Ghoul Dukat", which is a weird mistake to make when no character pronounces Gul like that.
@@JazzyWaffles It's an AI voiceover....have you never noticed that??
@@blankspace178 Is it? Then they're lazy c-nts at JoBlo!
DS9, for me, is the best Trek series. Unfortunately I feel that current Trek has taken all the wrong lessons from the show and try too hard to replicate the grimdark vibe of the Dominion arc without actually doing the work of building up the characters first.
Fun fact: When DS9 aired in Europe Colm Meaney's character was changed to Kilometers O'Brien.
🤣 A nerd joke worthy of a Tom Holland Peter Parker t-shirt.
That brought a smile to my face.
That was my only goal so thank you!
Never forget; Chief O'Brien got to yell "Bollocks" in DS9, and all Ireland cheered.
@@JordanMayjor3p7 It's great to find jokes that are so creative but simple at the same time. 15 words, that's all it took. Boom, done, happy. Thank you for sharing that.
Other jokes that tickle that same funny bone are the speed settings on the wheelchair in Johnny English. Fast, V.Fast then F.Fast
Or the Original Warburtons bread advert with Sylvester Stallone. Three quick cuts of British Drivers getting it to the trucks, 'clonk', 'clonk', 'clonk'. Stallone gets into the American side of the truck, 'Clonk' no steering wheel.
The Alpha and Gamma quadrants aren't different galaxies, they're both quadrants of this galaxy. "Morn" isn't "Norm" spelled backwards (but they are anagrams).
He mispronounced a lot of names and things from the show, which is odd for someone who supposedly loved the show lol but it is what it is.
@@LordLOC he could be tone deaf. But then again this was a poorly executed video.
Quadrants are not different galaxies. They are quarters (quadrants) of the same galaxy.
galaxies 70,000 lightyears apart... apparently
I was about to say the same thing.
"Allamaraine, count to four,
Allamaraine, then three more,

@@LordTalax Agreed.
25:22 Will Crusher?
As played by Wesley Wheaton of course 😊
To bad he never took Picard's advice in real life "shut up Wesley."
This video *screams* that you haven't actually seen it and are just looking things up on the internet, and getting a ton of even the most basic stuff blatantly incorrect
Your idea that the narrator did'nt actually watched DS9 is backed up by his constant mispronunciation of both characters and the actors who played them.
Agreed. He was mispronouncing major characters. Took me out of it a bit. Still glad they did it though
@@therabbitslayerr I agree with you there. Where's pronunciation of names is a pet peeve with me.
If you watch a movie or TV show you hear these names pronounce correctly. It's always bug me maybe because I come from a family of teachers and I spent almost 30 years buying and selling books in New England 😀
*alleged former cardissian spy
How can you profess your love for star trek but then completely butcher certain names???
narrator and writer are two different people
@@Arroyo2099the writer also thought it was “the last post” not “the last outpost”…..
@@Bored_Barbarian It's entirely possible the narrator just misread it and they didn't bother do another VO take or no one noticed. JoBlo is a bit of a video mill
"It isnt you i hate Cardassian. Its what ive become because of you." The TNG that first introduced the Cardassians and Colm Meany's brilliant performance. Its like the DS9's producers saw that as a springboard for DS9.❤❤❤
"The Wounded" episode from TNG. I've always loved that episode, espically the end where O'Brien and his old captain sing "The Minstrel Boy" sadly while remembering lost comrades.
I'm half expecting Mike from Red Letter Media to join the chat and contradict everything that Jesse and David say about DS9.
Yeah, I'm looking for that comment, too! ;)
The DS9 writers had a rule for O'Brien - he was not allowed to have a good day
Star Trek died after Nemesis. DS9 was imo the highlight of the franchise. What we got today is just a shadow of what used to be a show with substance and heart.
that's horse puckey.
I am no fan of _Discovery,_ but _Strange New Worlds_ is just fantastic, and I really like _Lower Decks._
DS9 is absolutely my fav outta all the Star Trek shows & The Visitor is my fav episode! It reminds me of me & my late Dad who was a widower. Sisko & Jake had that special relationship of father & son just like me & my dad & I miss him to this day!
DS9 was absolutely divisive in the Trek fandom for many years, that's true. It was a darker, grittier Trek with many shades of gray and that polarized the fanbase. But as time has went on, I feel most fans have since come around. It's extremely common in Trek circles these days to see fans talking about the show positively.
Yeah, they're called the toxic fanbase. They hate everything new until it's not new.
They hated TNG bcos Picard wasn't Kirk, etc.
Then DS9 bcos is was station not a ship and a black commander was political correctness gone mad. Same with Voyager, female captain was political correctness.
Enterprise wasn't canon/broke the continuity. And the theme song.
They now cry about "wokeness and forced diversity". They never learn.
I was not a fan. DS9 was the only Star Trek spinoff that I never watched in its entirety, having been disappointed after the 2nd season. As the video says the show got better, I may go back and give it another try.
@@tanler7953 It _definitely_ got better. All the awkward weirdness in so much of the 1st and 2nd season went away, and was replaced with confident storytelling as they figured out what worked and how they were going to tell their story. I liked DS9 from the beginning, but I'm not going to pretend that seasons 1 and 2 weren't full of clunkiness, or that something like _Move Along Home_ was ever a good idea; they were still struggling with the idea of "what whacky new thing came through the Wormhole this week?! Aliens with a magic children's board game!" But by season 3 they got their stuff together. They would still have occasional silly fun episodes, but that's a tradition with _Star Trek._ The episode _Trials and Tribbilations_ is something that every _Star Trek_ fan should watch.
@@tanler7953 You should. It would be akin to someone telling you they stopped watching TNG after the second season and judging the series on that alone.
@@RonJomero I rather liked the first two seasons of TNG. At what point should someone stop watching a series if they don't like it? Three years, four years? I think two years is sufficient.
Weyoun played by Jeffrey Combs is my favorite Villian of Star Trek
Jeffrey Combs is awesome in every role he plays.
@@JordanMayjor3p7 He was excellent as Shran on Enterprise
Which Weyoun? That dude died a LOT
My favorite is the Borg Queeen, but he comes in close.
The way you say “Bajorans”, you don’t know how to pronounce Garak’s first name, you thought Jake would join “the federation” instead of starfleet, that you don’t know that the Gamma quadrant and alpha quadrant are both in the Milky Way galaxy, not separate galaxies… Relatively minor mistakes, but you say you love the show and these are pretty basic things. Seems more like you are just reading a script someone else wrote. Still a good vid. Props to the script writer.
NEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRDDDDDDD!!!!!!
I mean, the script writer got “the last outpost” wrong. 14:01
Babylon 5 👀 so glad you mentioned it.
A fantastic series!
I think Michael Dorn’s Worf is the most prolific character. He’s been in the most episodes.
Shout out to Vaughn Armstrong. The most different characters played.
Also your pronunciation is all off. 😂 it’s kinda funny.
Peak startrek.
I was immediately on board with DS9 when I seen Avery Brooks. One of my favorite actors. I love him so much. He could never be replaced. No matter what he does, it's just perfect! DS9 is one of my favorite shows of all time. I re-binge the whole series every so often because I just love being in that world, you know? Thanks for another awesome episode!
Deep Space 9 really really needs to be binged ... the excitement, tension and depth really comes to the fore when binged and is truly phenomenal!!!
Fun fact, the girl that played Miles O’Brians daughter appears on Kitchen Nightmares , on the Sushi-Ko episode.
"Will Crusher" 🤣 Also you pronounced Garak's first name wrong. Great job!
Thanks
Or maybe star trek fans are less toxic because it's a property that focuses on diplomacy and tolerance.
;)
Ds9 is cracked.. so underrated
DS9 is a gem. I really need that Blu-Ray edition!
Sadly it almost cetainly won't happen - they apparently lost a ton on the TNG remaster as sadly it didn't sell well enough to recoup the cost as they had to fully re-do all the open ship CGI, etc. to make it 16:9 as it couldn't just be upscaled given the way it was shot. With all the sequences in DS9 it would cost FAR more.
Though I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to see it.
@@ross-carlson Perhaps with someday AI upscaling. That does not really cost much
@6:22 The Alpha Quadrant and the Gamma Quadrant are, as the names suggest, *quadrants* of the Milky Way Galaxy, and not galaxies in or of themselves.
I grew up with TNG but Deep Space Nine is my favorite Trek.
WHOO! Been waiting for this!! Best Star trek series!
We love your station but "William Crusher"?! Fired! J/K... thanks for the great vid and y'alls hard work! Really enjoy watching your vids!
Ira Steven Behr saved Star Trek in my opinion....I get Gene's original intent with TOS but Ira brough the gritty, dirty reality of the galaxy in DS9.
Ronald D Moore as well. I love BSG because of them too.
DS9 is my favorite series... Season 7 aired my freshman year of high school. I had a huge crush on Dax...both of them...Jadzia and Ezri.
22:21 I forgot how much I LOVE Garak!!
So cool this just was released, last night I just finished binge watching DS9, which I had not seen before!
Top Five ST Shows: DS9, TNG, TOS, SNW, DIS
Top 3 ST Episodes: Far Beyond the Stars, Duet, In the Pale Moonlight - all DS9 episodes.
Enterprise and Voyager were much, much better than Discovery.
Loved this. Thank you.
What I love about Star Trek is that is helps instantly identify people worthy of befriending. No matter which show a person likes (well, maybe except nuTrek, because it's a Star Wars ripoff rather than continuation of Roddenbery's vision) and no matter what their views on singular aspects of life are - you are guaranteed that when you stumble upon a trekkie, you stumble upon a fundamentally... good person at heart. They might not be angels; they might not be perfect; they might have huge flaws of character - but in the end, you can be sure that they will do the right thing.
I have a friend that often poses as a tough guy. I treated him as a good buddy for a long time, but at one point I discovered that he secretly loves Voyager. He hid that from his manly-men buddies that he lived among, but when I found out he was so happy to share his softer side with someone! He had a tough life, resorted to dealing drugs at one point even, but there were so many times we drank beer in the woods at night and he would tell me how he wishes humanity to be as good as it is portrayed in Star Trek, treat people well, and so on. We are bonded for life since I discovered he's a secret trekkie.
Edit: the further I watch the video the worse ot gets unfortunately. Mispronounciations, wrong facts, and what thel hell is this all talk about sexuality? Seems like 10% of the video is devoted to genital preferences of the characters. Is this really THAT important to modern audiences??
both Dax actresses were so stunning.
Hard to.imagine DS9 with out Kira and Nana's.❤ great.performance
Friends of mine who weren't Star Trek fans at all, some who weren't even into science fiction, fell in love with Deep Space Nine in its first and second seasons. For some it became a gateway to more Star Trek. Others just stuck with DS9, which is okay. Some previous Star Trek fans may not have liked it but it was such a great show it created many more fans.
Great video. Can you guys do "Spenser for Hire" at some point. Please.
Great Retrospect Mr.Shade. You put some respeckt on DS9 name.
Well I wrote it but thanks for the compliment anyway
This was my introduction to Star trek. I remember recording each episode on vhs and writing them all down in a book labeled with episode names lol then i did the same with all the treks. The golden years of Star trek without a doubt.
Bay-Jorans. Changa-Lings. Ghuol-Dukat. Aleem-Garak.
For someone who claims to love this series, the narrator pronounces most of the proper nouns differently than the hundreds of times they are spoken in the series.
TNG was my first love, but DS9 is my favorite.
@@matthewdaley746 that's certainly an opinion, TNG is a close 2nd to DS9, but to each their own.
I am not convinced by the argument that the series was not cancelled. The Breen joined the war on the Dominion side towards the end, suggesting that the war was scheduled to continue. Also Jake was left waiting for his father to return from the wormhole.
Nice to know the real reason why Terry Farrell left the series.
‘In the Pale Moonlight’ is the best episode of Trek ever. Maybe the best episode of anything ever…
Thankyou JMS for giving us both B5 and DS9!
So was this entire script written by AI and narrated by someone from Fiverr? Or did you actually have any part in its creation at all?
This is your best video Shade. 💯
Nog had the BEST character development in all of Star Trek.
DS9 was the best Star Trek series, in my opinion.
Glad to see another person who loves and appreciates its great writing and storytelling.
Rick Berman deserves redemption. He was keeping the franchise safe from turning into what modern Trek is.
Cisko is my favorite captain and this is my favorite Star Trek. One of my birds, who passed away, would also enjoy watching the reruns with me.
Sisko….
One of the greatest television series of all time I love all theses characters
When I was young I didn’t like DS9, I wanted starships. Now it’s my favorite Star Trek series. Ben Sisko is my favorite captain/commander in the entire franchise. Love this show! Good breakdown!!
The rootbeer scene between Quark and Garak is still my favorite single scene in all of Star Trek.
INCREDIBLE job paying homage to a wonder piece of television art
Some of the best of Trek, even if it was inspired by the pitch for Babylon 5 because Paramount figured if they made it as a Trek series they wouldn't have to deal with a new property.
We ended up getting two great shows.
This is the best series that came out of Star Trek during that era.
Also known as BEST TREK!!!
DS9 is my favourite Star Trek show. A couple of months ago I binged it all and it's as great now as ever.
Adding Worf produced some of the best DS9 episodes
Deep Space Nine was one of the first Trek shows I watched as a kid and I loved it, and still consider it my favorite today. I'm so glad that many more people have come around to appreciate it now, considering it was dismissed as the black sheep of the franchise in the past.
This was my favorite trek. The characters felt the most relatable.
Deep Space Nine was the best Trek spin off since Classic Star Trek.
Like 1960s Star Trek, Captain Sisko and his crew weren't 'perfect', nor did they pretend that they were, neither did they parade their moral superiority.
DS9 tackled issues that had shades of grey such as politics, religion, and war; with the latter reminding fans spoiled by TNG's utopia that Starfleet does have a Military role.
Ironically, Deep Space Nine never had a confrontation with the Borg, given the Emissary's past with them.
As for crushes, definitely Kira for me. 🖖
I will never not be amused with TH-cam interpreting 'Cardiassian' as 'Kardashian'. 'a former Kardashian spy' XD
DS9 isn't my favourite (that's a toss-up between Voyager and TNG), but I do like DS9.
William Shatner (Captain James T. Kirk) made that same error in pronunciation several times.
Will Crusher? Um . . . I think you meant Wesley Wheaton.
Pronunciations aside, this is a fantastic video! DS9 is by far my favorite Star Trek and Sisko is BY FAR my favorite Captain. SO many great memories from watching your video. You were spot on with the favorite episodes. I can't get through The Visitor with a dry eye to this day (my father passed away when I was in my early 20s). Duet is simply outstanding. The characters were so amazingly fleshed out. If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it. If you can't get through the first season or two, skip to Way of the Warrior and watch the next few episodes; you'll be hooked :)
I wasn’t a fan of DS9 but got into it a few yrs later & was sad when it ended. But still a better ending than Voyager which was abit abrupt.
Quark is STILL my fav character of all time, I have the Rules or Acquisition on my wall :)
Thanks!
DS9 has all lot "best ofs", best of the Star Trek series, In the pale moonlight, best Star Trek episode, Garak, best character in Star Trek.
And talking about Garak, Star Trek is famous for great bromances and DS9 has several of them. ^^
Deep Space Nine is so great too bad it never got a blu-ray remaster release
I watched quite a few episodes of DS9 back in the day but recently rewatched the entire series and it’s fantastic. A must watch for Star Trek or Sci fi fans
I personally have DS9 as my favorite Trek series. And before we lose anymore of the cast to the eventual passing of life, please make a DS9 limited series.
On this episode of Keeping Up with the Cardassians.
Correction: The different quadrants are quadrants of our galaxy. Not different galaxies.
DS9 is my favourite Trek. Sisko for me is the best Captain, a family man, passionate but also cerebral. I really loved Kira too, her strength and fiery personality. Pushing and pulling against Sisko in the early days and her determination during the Dominion War. O'Brien is the best though, hand he has such a wholesome relationship with Keiko. As you said they have their ups and down but always stayed strong.
The regular Cardassian Guests had so much presence, Garak, Dukat and Damar.
For the record, my favourite episode is The Darkness and the Light
This has too many errors to have been actually made by a real fan of DS9.
DS9 is a real hidden gem in the Star Trek universe. When Next Generation started getting too PC, DS9 was a good alternative. It was fun, and edgy, and had awesome characters.
Absolutely nothing hidden about it, it IS the best Trek.
And the toxic fans HATED on it as much as they do with the new trek. They never stop with their toxicity
@@RichO1701e No, you're wrong, they are not even comparable. Star trek discovery and star trek picard were horrible in every regard. Nothing star trek about it and hundreds upon hundreds of continuity errors that break the lore. And the people who made the show called everyone who didn't like the show "racist" and "sexist" which is just sad honestly. Their only defense of their abominations were personal attacks against the fans.
DS9 is brilliant and it's unreasonable to compare it to the garbage produced today.
Next Generation got too pc? Please explain.
@@christianriddler5063 thank you for proving my point, toxic fans like you are just the worst fans. You all hated DS9 when it started. Just like Enterprise.

Yes, make more Star Trek Videos!
I remember watching DS9 every Sunday evening on UPN 48. GARAK and Dax were my favorite characters.. the episode trials and tribble-ations was my favorite episode.
DS9 was my 1st star trek and still my favorite. Once they get to the war it becomes incredible. I think I liked the fact it wasnt a new planet every episode and more focus was on the central cast instead of that focus being split between the main cast and the cast of whatever planet their on.
Now that A.I., machine learning, and 4K upscaling has matured and is widely available, I hope that Paramount will finally do a complete restoration of the entire DS9 and Voyager series. I will be first in line! Make It So!
When I finally got to watch the series in its entirety on DVD (remember those?) in the early 2000s, I realized right away it was the best ST to date. And upon rewatching all the Star Treks during Pandemic year, DS9 reinforced what a goddamn delight it is. Every character is incredible, including the recurring ones. Just flat out brilliant.
I do recall that in the late 90s online (usenet, in particular), a lot of people ranted about Berman era Trek. But now the consensus is that those series were pretty great. So for all the haters of Kurtzman era Trek, in twenty years most people will fondly remember the current batch of shows, which I personally have mostly enjoyed (other than the dang slow talking redesigned Klingons in the first two seasons of Discovery)
I love Star Trek too and I love DS nine I love how they changed it up in Myxed a hole bunch of things and kept it within the world of Star Trek,Sisco next to the card is my favorite captain
I will never understand how Star Wars is more popular than Star Trek. Go ahead and come at me!
22:19 - The best Bsshir/ Garak scene…
Bashir - Which is the truth and which is the lie?
Garak- It’s all true my dear Doctor, Especially the lies.
Still can't believe we have no blu ray for DS9. :(
I used to be a hater of DS9 when it aired. I think being in my early teens I couldn't appreciate it. It is my second favorite Trek series now
Beautiful, well done and thank you
God I love DS9
Although I don't think its the best Star Trek show, I didn't hate it. They tried to make us hate it when it was first announced. I didn't fall for that.
While in all honesty I do somewhat prefer seasons two through four of Babylon Five to Deep Space Nine, DS9 remains my favourite Star Trek series. Exceptional characters, some of the best villains in all of Trek, fantastic ongoing plotlines weaving across multiple seasons, and the preparedness to both ask and answer the hard question - what happens when the high ideals of the Federation are put to a genuinely stern and ongoing test? Episodes like 'In The Pale Moonlight' still stand for me among the finest that all of Star Trek has to offer.
