Thank you for the honesty. That is why I want the A7SIII. Shaquile O"Neal famously said "it's only money" and this somehow resonated with me. Not that I am a rich and successful NBA player, but it's the fact that knowing I am settling somehow. Cost is important, don't get me wrong. I just find that the difference in cost savings does not equate to the workflow aggravations, lost time and what your hearts set on.
That’s totally fair and I can understand that angle. Although in my case, I actually save a lot of time in post with the easier-to-edit codec and smaller file sizes. I think the fact that I still like my Blackmagic footage better played a big part too, making the price point of the S3 a bit unattractive. But of course, that’s just me! Hope you create a ton of great shit with your camera 🙌
@@boywithacamera I LOVE the quality of the Blackmagic sooo much. I agree with you. I didn’t think you spend less time in post...this is good to know. Hope you create some awesome art too, bro. 🤙🏾
Great video, great information, awesome audio... you either have a really great voice or you’re a wizard with audio. Thanks for bringing perspective and me back to reality. I’ve just started getting into video/photography and have been wanting an A7SIII but I don’t even know what I don’t know. In short, it’d be a waste for me to spend that much money on a camera, not to say I won’t do it anyways, but for now your video talked me down. Thanks!🙏🇺🇸

I totally feel you though, I'll probably eventually cave and get an A7SIII again lol. It's a constant battle!
Great video bro. I’m flip flopping between the two for my next camera myself so it’s nice to hear someone with real world experience with both. You’ve got my subscription
@@boywithacamera thanks man. Oddly enough I’m leaning towards a Blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4K. I don’t take photos (other than with my iPhone) and am really just looking for better video quality lol
Last week my A6600 took a swim and is dead. I had a $900 Weebill 2 gimbal on order in transit. It was the gift of the Magi. Couldn't stand the idea of spending $1400 just to get back to where I was. After much research and consternation I came across the A7C for only $400 more. I discovered the gyro image stabilizing system in the A7C and realized I can return the gimbal, use the money against the A7C, get 80% of the stabilizing of a gimbal with 10% of the hassle for 100% of my footage while only spending $900. I have and A7C arriving in 2 days. Thanks for your video, I will sleep better to night knowing for my situation I have made the right decision.
Hello, I had a Sony A7II and connected a dummy battery to a NP-F990 for video recording. My question is: for Sony A7C and Sony A7IV can I only operate the camera with USB type C without a dummy battery? If feasible please provide link to product. I tried it but it doesn't work, the settings on the camera are also set to USB-ON. Thanks so much
Nice appraisal thanks. The only reason Im interested in the C is gyro stabalisation because Im a gimbalphobe. You made a good point about enjoying using your equipment. Im pretty sure I wouldn't enjoy using the C.
Love the footage you took regardless - it feels really nostalgic, and you are absolutely right about a camera just being a tool. I think for personal use, the image quality for size trade off is one well worth it!
What about the single SD card slot issue with the A7C? This is the issue which is making the A7C less attractive. You go for a vacation or shoot for a client, somehow end up with corrupted SD cards. I've no idea what to tell to the client if that happens.
@@boywithacamera This really puts things into perspective, I currently have an a7iii that I have pushed to its limit and I've been debating between these two cameras for too long now. The hardest part is making that decision to go to a camera that is basically a simplified a7iii with added (needed) features or going to a camera that I won't struggle pushing around colours and not dealing with 1080p 120fps which honestly doesn't always look great. I feel like even if I go with the a7siii the same thing that happened to you might end up happening to me where you sort of realize that you can't necessarily justify the 'total' price of the setup for what you do.
@@FishingOD_OFFICIAL Oh man that's a tough decision to make. I personally would pass on the A7C if I were you and see if I can hold out until the A7IV comes out, but you know your situation the best!
Thanks for your time and glad you're enjoying the A7C! I'm definitely hoping there's a nice black friday sale on the S3 at some point in the future lol
That’s awesome to hear. Listen to your gut is what I’d say! I also left out that sometimes it’s better to go for your wants and just work your ass off to make it worth it aka pick up a lot of clients or do a lot of projects with it. In my case though both things didn’t seem likely so it was definitely an easier decision for me. Cheers though and good luck!
I totally agree, as an a7iii owner who's looking to expand my horizons, the a7siii just looks normal "just a camera". Blackmagic isn't perfect in many situations, but when you use it correctly, there's something unique about it.
@@boywithacamera Yeah definitely, wouldn't throw an A7siii away or anything! Especially with the auto focus and ease of use, but looking forward to seeing the new video!
I LOVE my A7RM3 but thinking of adding the A7C to have something at my fingertips at all times without having to invest in an entire new lens lineup! I only break out my A7RIII for special projects.
I heard that when you attach an oss lens to this camera the ibis turns off insead of complementing the optical stabilization. Is this true for both photos and videos? PLS ANSWER I’M CONSIDERING THIS PURCHASE
Hey Tommaso! I'd appreciate it if you didn't ask in all caps next time haha. I just tried the 70-200 f4 OSS lens on the A7C and the SteadyShot option becomes greyed out. I don't know if that turns it off entirely or if it's working with the OSS though. It might still be on, but you have to use it with OSS. Good luck in your search!
You are a VERY intelligent and thoughtful person. I'm in the micro 43 world with lots of good glass and more than happy with GH5 footage, but was interested in this video since so many are hailing the A7Siii as the be-all end-all. As I shoot natural history videos, I'd love that lowlight capability for my night wildlife shoots...not the strength of the GH5! Thanks for this!
Many thanks Larry for your kind words and time! Sounds like you would benefit greatly from the lowlight capability and coming from the GH5 (such an amazing camera though!), you'd appreciate the difference. Might be worth it for you to rent it out and try it!
You should have got a6100 and save $1200. I would say if you are into short films or documentaries, eventually save up for FX6. For me, it will be in 4 or 5 years (hopefully sooner if I have the 'extra' money). By the way, I am from Mississauga, ON, Canada. Let me know if you want to collaborate. I got a Sony FS700r, a6100, a7r3, XT3, and GH4. Love all my cameras and not buying any cameras. Saving up for FX6, the cine lens 16-35mm T3.1, and Shogun 7.
Haha I was definitely debating whether or not to just pick up the 6100, but decided to go full-frame instead. Sounds like a great setup you're saving up for! For sure, hit me up on IG @boywithacamera.co
The Sony A7C is calling my attention. My original idea was to buy the A6600 for the price, but I feel that video quality is already somewhat outdated. So when I see the price of the A7C the Lumix S5 is priced a bit higher, but within my maximum budget. And there is that I do not know which to decide. I really want a camera that will be effective for me for at least 3 years.
Hmm I think the a6600 will have the same or at least really similar quality to the A7c so I wouldn’t count it out just yet! As for whether or not a camera will last for 3 years, I’d say that really depends on what you want to do with your camera because that will determine your needs. I’d ask yourself if your needs will be changing a lot in the next 3 years because needs are different from trends. 4K video for example was trendy starting from a couple of years ago but I know a lot of people who still don’t shoot in 4K even now. I personally just started shooting 4k this year and only had one client that wanted 4K delivery. Hope that helps and good luck! Don’t get too stressed about buying the perfect camera 🙏
Is it an upgrade if I go for a7c from a7sII. I shoot music videos mainly for now but I am getting bored to focus pull so much manually.. I find it very useful to go up to 25,600 ISO and Canon FD 50 1.4 for example. But is the quality going to be really more annoying to use a7c on 25,600 ISO and Sigma 24 1.4 for example compared to my actual setup? 🥺
Hey CHT Films, sorry for the late reply! There are some clips here that show footage shot past 12,800 ISO so I'd take another look at those and for other examples online. I personally think you'll like the A7C better from the sound of it--the autofocus is a great feature to have and the updated colours are more pleasing imo.
I have an a7c! And I like it but I feel as though I’m under using it. It’s my first Sony camera and I’m lost I must admit....I wish I could find a video on here that goes in depth with this camera. I like your videos as their always so simple.
I'm a pretty simple guy when it comes to my cameras so I'm not sure how much I can help, but I'll sit on it and see what I can come up with! Let me know if there are some specific things you're curious about :) Thanks for your time.
Same here. My husband got me the a7c for Christmas and I have no experience whatsoever with cameras so I'm so lost and been watching TH-cam videos everyday for step by step guide or beginner's guide on how to set it properly for vids and photography. Would love a video on this. TiA
This helps too because I keep saying almost everyoneeee on youtubr just saying get the A7 III it's better, the buttons, etc. Yes I am frustrated there are some shortcoming to the A7C in photography aspects, like the 1/4000 shutter, custom, etc. But, I got this camera to make youtube videos and mainly record myself while learning to take pictures (hopefully take some of myself too). I sorta wish it was the same body as the A7 III but it's main use will probably be on a tripod unless I want to take pictures at the beach. I was thinking the same thing and build up my lens line while waiting for the A7 IV as well. The autofocus and flip screen was a big reason I got the A7C for self recording. Thanks for the video
Thanks for your time Greg! Definitely nothing wrong with liking the A7C. It’s not a camera for everyone, but who cares if it’s working for you. Hope you get tons of use out of it :)
I've been comparing A7C and other cameras recently to buy my first camera. I think each camera brand has its own strengths and weaknesses. It'd better to stop worrying and buy A7C and start shooting right away, right?
Your first camera is exciting so I don't blame you! Spot on though--each camera has pros and cons and you won't really understand how those cons might affect you until you have established a workflow + style/type of video that you want to create. And finding all of that out might also take a while so I definitely think it's better to start shooting & editing with whatever you can get your hands on. :)
Greetings from the Netherlands! I must say I enjoyed this video very much and you were very humble. Normally I don't even take the time to like or comment but here you have it. Good luck and stay safe!
Sample footages are awesome! a7c is way enough to amateur like me. Thanks for the good review holding me not to consider switching to a7s3 for a while!
I canceled my a7sIII order and ordered the A7C People do not notice the 10 Bit video quality, They cant even tell the difference between Sony a6300 and Black Magic 4K unless you point it out to them.
I definitely can agree with the 10 bit thing, people who aren’t in this space don’t really notice the difference. I have had a lot of people comment on my Blackmagic footage though so I’m thinking that there might be a noticeable difference
@@boywithacamera yep, if they look at it on a TV they there is a difference butt most people are looking at videos on there phone so they cant hardly tell the difference this was one of the main reasons I told my self don't need the a7sIII do I really want to be editing 10 - 13 bit footage where people cant tell the difference the answer was nope
You should look into the sigma fp. Picture quality is gorgeous. For stills and videos. Af isn't great but other than that its an amazing tiny cinema beast of a camera and feels like a leica in terms of build quality and honeslty even picture quality
Damn, the fp takes stills too? I had no idea. Might have to take a look! Have you used a Pocket 4K before? I'd love to hear your thoughts on how it compares to it.
@@boywithacamera i havent used a pocket 4k before. But I've seen comparisons and can tell you right off the bat, based on sensor size alone, that the fp is going to more than likely kill the pocket in picture quality, and lowlight capabilities. The fp has its quirks for sure, but I'll take picture quality over bells and whistles any day. You said something in your video about it (sony) still just feeling like a camera, and that's exactly why I went with the sigma. It feels like much more than a camera. It feels like a tool to create art. No it doesn't have a flippy screen, or the latest in autofocus. But the picture quality is just rich. And the colors are amazing. I left fuji for sigma actually and I always swore by fuji for the colors. And the coolest or funnest part about the sigma, is that its incredibly customizable. So no two sigma's look or act the exact same way. Depending on the lens/grip/cage etc etc. Its kind of fun to customize it to your own style. I'm planning on getting a super tiny pancake lens for it so that it is actually pocketable, and use it for street photography and city b roll. And when I want to get a little more serious I can attach an entire cinema rig/lens and go crazy! Lol!
Oh man love the passion you have for the FP! It's funny because all the things you said is exactly how I feel about the Pocket4K and the Leica M8 I own haha (minus the pocketable bit, impossible with the Pocket4K ironically lol). I'll definitely have to play around with the Sigma when I can, thanks for sharing and hope you're creating tons of shit you love!
@@boywithacamera my pleasure! The sigma fp is a camera that I feel like deserves more attention, hence my passion, and I feel like companies like sigma that are willing to take risks and think outside the box can use all the support they can get 😊👍🏽
Hi - Im a graphic designer who has been making a living creating photo and video work for SM. So far I've only shot 1080 with a DSLR (nikon). The reason Im considering a A7C is the added feature of gyro stabalisation when I need 2- 3 seconds of movement. I also only have been using primes and its becoming a bit cumbersome and not particularly enjoyable. So my idea was to buy a second camera with a couple of primes that would keep things light - sony 20 f1.8 and sony 85 f1.8. I can see the A7C ergos will not be as nice as my D750 but the superior AF should make things a little less stressful in video at least. Im pants at grading so I think 10 bit may be wasted on me. I do wish they'd stuck a second card in tho for video backup.
That's awesome that you have a well-rounded skillset. I really need to work on picking up some things from the world of graphic design! If using primes is cumbersome I'd definitely give zooms a try for video as they're so convenient. Ah D750 ergos are amazing, but the video experience on a Sony will absolutely be a nice step up. Agreed on the second card!
@@boywithacamera indeed it is! I’m mostly rocking vintage lenses right now. I got the Helios 44-2 58mm, The SMC Takumar 50mm F1.4, and I just got the rare 24mm SMC Takumar F3.5 to add to my collection.
@@boywithacamera Definitely! I love the image of the Helios, but the focus ring on mine is kinda stiff, what I’ve noticed with the Takumar’s is they’re buttery smooth as far as pulling focus. The 50mm Takumar has a bigger focus throw, the 24mm is definitely shorter.
Ah I see, thanks for sharing! I prefer a shorter focus throw most of the time, but feel like I'm slowly leaning towards longer throws. It's crazy how focus rings seem to make such a big difference (though you get used to it over time of course)
@@boywithacamera First of all, 제가 더 감사하죠 :) And as a person who owns a5100 and rx10m3 and planning to upgrade from it, your video helped me a lot. And I'm just looking forward to seeing more videos that you make! For me, I want to know if a7c's what kit lens is capable of.... Because I'm planning to get a7c with sel35f18f and crop kit lens sel1650pz just for that wide-angle. I like how small the kit lens is but it feels like it's missing wide for and low f stop. So, I want to know what can you do with kit lens for a7c..!
Oo very nice! A7C + 35 will be a perfect fit and I think the 1650 with crop is a really creative idea. I unfortunately don't have a kit lens for the A7C. I usually just use that money on a lens with a constant aperture (like the 35mm). I'm sure you can still create great images with the A7C+Kit because of its lowlight capability, but I personally don't like to worry about my aperture changing when I zoom in. Definitely try searching on TH-cam though, I'm sure it's somewhere out there!

Yeah the Blackmagic stuff is kind of insane especially when you take into account the price! Cheers bro
Thanks!🙏🇺🇸

Was a pleasure listening to you. Thanks!

Thanks so much
Tell me, is there an battery grip for a7c ???
Can't find one 😕
None that I know of :( If you want one for more comfort/make your camera grip bigger, then a cage will help
@@boywithacamera okay thanks!!!
Nice appraisal thanks. The only reason Im interested in the C is gyro stabalisation because Im a gimbalphobe. You made a good point about enjoying using your equipment. Im pretty sure I wouldn't enjoy using the C.
Fellow gimbalphobe here! It's definitely not for everyone, although I am surprised at how quickly it's grown on me.
Love the footage you took regardless - it feels really nostalgic, and you are absolutely right about a camera just being a tool. I think for personal use, the image quality for size trade off is one well worth it!
Thanks for your time bro! Yeah I've been loving the smaller size nowadays a lot more than I had thought I would
Appreciate the honesty here, this helped calm my craving for the a7s3 a bit haha.
Haha we gotta help each others' wallets! My craving is starting to come back already, not going to lie. Maybe I need to watch this video myself lol
terrific video
Thank you Carlos!
Great audio Quality
What about the single SD card slot issue with the A7C? This is the issue which is making the A7C less attractive. You go for a vacation or shoot for a client, somehow end up with corrupted SD cards. I've no idea what to tell to the client if that happens.
getting my a7c tomorrow. great video.

@@boywithacamera Id love to do that too! I don’t feel like spending extra money to get my a7iii fixed and stuff.

Very informative, helps me out a lot as I pre-ordered the a7siii as well and I was having trouble deciding if I needed it
That’s awesome to hear.

Working on a Blackmagic video because I absolutely agree with you haha (although I would still love to own a SIII)
Sounds like what I'm doing with my A7C and Pocket! The small size is definitely nice for bringing around. I just need to get a smaller lens now haha
@@boywithacamera thanks for your answer, no one seems to know this, i appreciate you trying helping me out
You are a VERY intelligent and thoughtful person.

Good stuff! Just recently picked up the a7C. Starting to use with my a6600.
Good choice! Sounds like a great combo
Can you tell us the settings you use with the a7C ( picture profile, settings...)???
S-Log2 with Saturation boosted +32 or something (the max). And then 4k 24 or 1080p 24. Pretty much factory settings otherwise. Cheers!
Man, you`re honest. (also, really digged into your filmmaking style. Subscribed!)

Oh man great collection you got going on! Definitely want to get my hands on each of those lenses at some point haha

Oo very nice! A7C + 35 will be a perfect fit and I think the 1650 with crop is a really creative idea. I unfortunately don't have a kit lens for the A7C. I usually just use that money on a lens with a constant aperture (like the 35mm).
