- I love the S5 II X, but it's a flawed camera. It's amazing but it's not perfect and today we are going to discuss those flaws because it's important to understand a camera before you buy.

Strongly disagree with you but each to their own
Deffo has flaws but calling this camera mediocre for video is just silly
He's obviously talking about it being mediocre FOR A VIDEO CAMERA... His entire point was that it shouldn't have been marketed as a video camera... It should have been marketed as a photography camera that has video capability (like how they marketed the regular S5II). They acted like it was going to be a FF GH6 or something, and it's obviously not.
Bro, you are splitting hairs, I shoot Events with 4 of these. lol. Your real issue is matching your personalization. I wouldn't say it wasn't made for Videography, it wasn't made for you and how you like things set. I have AF Down with this one. You should have returned it, anything that hampers your productivity doesn't need to be in your bag.
The high base iso is caused by the log profile, usually the more highlight stops a log profile has, the higher the base iso would be. Because the full well capacity of the sensor will stay the same no matter what profile u use, so the raw data all technically clip at the same point, but by making a really flat profile u effectively can underexpose and then push the image brighter and make a really flat low contrast image to maintain max dynamic range, and that's why shadows are always more noisy in log too, cus you are pulling up the exposure from a underexposed image to preserve more highlight detail.
"Oh no I put this screw in clamp on the ports and it doesn't let me tilt the screen...."
It is obvious that your video was made for clickbait reasons. WHERE DID YOU SEE Panasonic saying that the s5ii/s5iix is a "cinema" camera? It is a hybrid camera, (both for photos & videos) THAT HAS CAPABILITIES, especially for videos, that other cameras that cost much more do not have. Really what is the shutter angle in Sony and Canon. I'm talking about the a7iv and the r6 mkii because those are the respective cameras the s5ii/s5iix should be compared to. Do they (the above 2 Sony & Canon cameras) have prores capability? Do they have the ability to write to ssd?. And ibis? AND OVERHEATING???
If they released a full frame GH6 body with 50p/60p and 100p/120p with no crop like the A7siii that would be an insane camera. With the GH6 type body and the latest Lumix stabilization that would be a crazy amazing camera. If it had a 20 megapixel plus sensor that would make it the most amazing hybrid video/stills camera. One day...
I wish! Would be a killer camera for sure
If cameras are so good now that these published specs are considered flaws, then we are in a pretty great place!
Now compare the same stuff with Sony A7iv.. Because they are on the same page.. You gonna find a lot more issues.. Reminder; S5ii is sub $2000 camera.. If you have premium money, you can buy premium camera fx6 for example
Yeah true. But if you compare it to the Fuji X-H2S, the Fuji has better specs in some areas like opengate prores and opengate braw capabilities. Sure no shutter angle but it does have tally lights and a better hdmi/usb port placement plus cfexpress.
So yes it's better than canon or sony I agree. I still love the camera, just have issues with it
@@jeremypope-levison721 X-H2s is a 1.5 crop.. Soooo.. There is no perfect camera
@metreweli I agree there's no perfect camera.
And yes it's a full crop though, so you can at least plan for it.
@@jeremypope-levison721the Fuji design is terrible. It has a “bolt on” external cooling no solution which from a mechanical design view is appaling.
The S5 ii x has the prores/B Raw options lol
Great video and instant sub. I researched this camera to death before purchasing it but after getting my hands on it I found all the same frustrations as you when it came to usability. Looking forward to future videos!
It is very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you for watching it!
For the Port issue, have you tried 90 degree connectors? That seems like it could solve the issue?
It wouldn't necessarily work because you'd need to find one's that work with the cable clamps, but even still, anything in those ports would block the screen. Just a bad design
@@jeremypope-levison721 J, how much are you willing to let it discount for, I will need another Body soon.
I appreciate both this video AND the people taking the time to disagree with you. Respectful informtive discussion.
I agree for the most part. Some comments have been unhelpful but obviously these are my opinions. I'm working on the positives of this video now, hope it'll be done this week
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
So I shoot a lot of real estate and I appreciate the 640 base ISO…perfect for darker interior. Also love that I can bump up to 4000 ISO for even darker scenarios. I do understand about that being an issue in bright sunlight.
Totally. I prefer a lower base mainly because I do tons of outside work and it's really bright. Constantly using a 6-9 stop ND. But I love the 4000 for even darker times
I feel you, as a GH6 user i was pretty confused why they choose to go with 2 sd slots and a more photo centric body design when the X should've been the new Video Beast.
My guess is that they saved all this stuff up for their S1H mk2. I remember the GH6 getting the screen design from the S1H.
Yeah I feel like if it shoots prores it should have a faster slot but I do think they are saving it for the s1h ii, just want them to release that now
don't listen to the negative review its honestly, he's complaining on every little thing even tho its better than most camera's and it will be built in most cases negating all his complaints. I mean it shoots 6k apple prores raw and Braw 6k. I literally picked one up coming from a fx3 and fx6. I still have the fx6 and I rarely use that. this camera does pretty much every thing the fx6 does for a third of the price which makes building this camera and getting lenses a joy. the S series lenses compared with the camera is literally the best duo considering the price or not. I'm listening to the video again and want to shred this review but I will say that any button on this camera can be customized by holding it for 3 seconds then choose your function.
Can you record (h265) 4k 60 on sd card?
Do you still have the autofocus issue when multiple people in a frame after new firmware?
Haven't had time to test in detail. It's better, but still finicky
Love the honest review of your experience with the camera! Can't say mine has been the same - I struggle with the AF a lot, but I know that's a "me" problem, lol. I personally don't have any issues with the 4K crop and have only noticed it a few times. The lack of function buttons, tally lamp, and screen articulation options (compared to the GH6) are all small annoyances, but overall I've had fun working with this camera. I've found the 640/4000 dual ISO comes in handy more often than not for me, but again, I am not doing as much outdoor shooting as you are. Would definitely like to hear your pros and how this camera has been an asset to your production kit!
To be fair, I do love this camera. It's been fun to work with and it's just another tool in my arsenal. But with the work I do, every minute counts which is why the function buttons and screen design have me frustrated.
I think I'm one of a few that do photo and video at the same events which is why the 4k crop stinks for me.
That being said, it's still a great camera. Just wanted to get my opinions out there!
@@jeremypope-levison721 I can definitely see the issue with the crop at events like that. I do photo/video as well, but we shoot & deliver in 1080 for those clients, so I never experience the crop, unless it's on one of my side projects.
I'm also still learning and tinkering with my exact workflow, so I'm sure having one and having a piece of kit that doesn't play nice with that workflow is a bit frustrating.
Either way, I still really appreciate the review! I'm a fan of the Lumix ecosystem and I think it needs a lot more recognition.
@rivvidproductions I agree. Lumix is a great ecosystem. Been using my GH6 now for 2 years strong.
@@jeremypope-levison721 I'll be two years with the GH6 in September. It was my first "real" camera purchase haha
@@rivvidproductions it's such a great little camera
Jeremy, thx for the video! Appreciate your opinion, especially when most TH-camrs praise it. I also do like s5iix, but it’s not perfect and it couldn’t be perfect. And if the price were higher, for example, 800-1000 more - nobody would talk so much about s5iix. I think, Lumix s5iix is a great example of the courage of marketers (price) and engineers (hybrid features) of the company. But other than that, it’s just a good camera with its pros and cons: ff crop at 60fps, lack of OLPF, uncomfortable port position relative to the internal screen and slight image delay by hdmi-cable to external monitor. But this camera is still good, can’t wait next Panasonic’s hybrid camera
No problem! Yes the lack of an olpf was another negative I forgot to mention. I've dealt with moire on this camera too. But it's still a great camera, but far from perfect
I've been rocking an S5ii and S5iix for the last 8 months and have been mostly loving them. I think your gripes are things I would have loved to see as well, but I also think you have to recognize the positioning of this camera. It's NOT a full frame GH6 (that's what the S1H line is supposed to be). It's a full frame G9II. Sure it would have been nice if it had tally lights and a few more customizable buttons, but those aren't things that cameras in this class usually offer, so I could just as well criticize Apple for not putting tally lights on my iPhone.
I agree that the S5ii vs. X designation is probably not needed, but they were pretty clear about what the differences were so idk I think it's fine. For the AF - have you tried the new firmware? I've found that mine do a lot better job of differentiating subjects on the latest firmware they just released.
I think you took the marketing wrong. I never saw the “ii” as the stills centric camera. They are both video centric cameras and you are right, there is only a Few differences.
Def redy for Gh6iix w 2cf express slots compatible w angelbird 4tb cfexpress . Internal prores raw and pdaf.😂 def outfiting Gh6 w Dji Focus pro and rs3pro both w Ninjas. You make points! Agree🎉.Thank You
I disagree with many of your points and calling this a mediocre video camera. As a videographer I have been using S5II for many of my professional work for a year now. And I can tell that other than 4k 60 crop nothing else has bothered me.
For a price of 2000 or less this camera is a great value for money and the image that comes out of this is exceptional.
Base iso I found to be more useful than Sonys 800. If it’s too bright I just put an ND.
Overall what I understand from this video is for your requirements this camera is not for you but that does not mean it’s a bad video camera.
I will say it again for sub 2000 dollar it’s a great video camera offering some features that only high end cameras provide.
Everyone disagrees with his points.
This is a very amateur review 😅
and it is not Phase detect Af at 60p and above in 1080. it is still contrast af at 60p.
Can't wait for a GH7 but what would you tell us about the G9ii? At least the G9ii has no crop by shooting in 4K 60. Thanks for the video and your honest thoughts. greetings :) By the way... I'm still producing my TH-cam content with the GH5. I own this camera since it came out and I still love it 😃 I recently got a bunch of Sigma MFT lenses and they work great paired with the GH5!
So the g9 ii is definitely interesting but limits you to mft lenses if you want the phase detect. I like that the s5 ii x actually works with ef lenses and AF because the depth of field on full frame is more true to the aperture.
I'd love a gh7 since I love my gh6s. I'd potentially switch back to MFT if the GH7 had dual native ISO.
I'd still use my gh5 more but the hdmi port broke :( so it's hard to use
@@jeremypope-levison721 Oh ok, thanks for your replay man :)
I do hope they come out with a GH7 soon. I'm kind of waiting to hear if they do. I love the MFT system and would love to see a true GH6 update
@@jeremypope-levison721 yeah.. and the G9ii has some overheating issues when shooting for a longer period of time in certain modes like 4K 120p. as far as I know. So it's not a video centric camera but you can get the camera pretty cheap now.
@kenslyder yeah I just need a camera to never overheat doing what I do
The GH6 is top of the line MFT S5 ii and X are entry level full frame and on sale often. So if you put everything on the S5ii it will kill most of the sakes of the GH6.
For the cost.. 😆 what can anyone expect, it is incredible bang for buck.
Very nice work on this video! Making me rethink Panasonic 📸
It's definitely an interesting camera. Great one, but some flaws
YEah I would say the only thing to think about is how fast you one to pick one up. the S5iix is considered a Demi God among camera's for video and photos. I mean it's so overpowering it's almost unfair how good it is. this review is complaining about non important factors even though it's still out performing other cameras.
If you are shooting 4k60 it has a 1.5 crop…what about the new firmware if you also shoot in the high E-Stab
Companies are in full gears making 35mm format bodies for beginners & amateurs with video features than still.
Hearing all of this my mind wants me to just say "buy a Sony FX3" lol Thats why I personally got that camera due to no crop factor, amazing autofocus, lowlight etc. I do totally relate to the flip screen issue, even the FX3 didnt resolve that. I'd much rather have a flippy screen than not but yeah once you rig these cameras up the screen basically has to stay either flipped into the camera or out the side. I'm excited about the "pros" video. It's pretty fun to learn about other ecosystems cause I only know Sony, Canon, and Blackmagic, only used the GH5 a handful of times and while it wasnt my favorite camera it did a great job when we triple booked ourselves one day and our B and C teams got to use our Sony's and Canon cameras.
Yeah I mean every camera has their issues. Up until recently sony didn't have a true 1/48, or shutter angle, plus it doesn't have opengate or external braw which is all stuff I use. And it's $4000, so compared to this which can do photos, I like the panasonic. These are just the gripes I have with it, but I wouldn't say don't buy it. There's pros and cons to every camera and I truly do love this camera.
I hope the S1II will not get the same internal processing than the S5II.
You rented the camera, tried it, and then bought it anyway despite fighting with the AF???
Sold mine. Not a fan. Just didn't gel with me.
The reason they have 2 models is because they have to pay license fees for stuff like ProRes which some people are never going to need.
Look
About the screen with a lilmon 5 the problem is solved...I used the onboard pana screen with the info Arri style...just use the S5 in S35 Mode if you don't like the crop...I use FF when I know I don't need 50 fps...
AF works fin in one area mode with super small search point...it is well knowed since GH5s S5 org that area + AF mode works the best then you need to fine adjustment the speed and sensitivity according to your need...GH6 is the same...
GH6 base ISO is if you want to compare the Dynamik range to the S5iiX it is 2000 iso base in dynamic boost mode...if you don't use this mode you loose 2 steps of dynamic range...so when you talk about base ISO of GH6 it is not the truth...and the striking issues u forgot to mention...S5II don't have it...
The S5 had more features than the s5ii some of which ended up only on the x
Wow, strongly, strongly disagree with so much in the first few minutes that I had to stop. Your complaint is they offer you 2 versions of a camera, one with extras and one without??? Weird.
I think he's mad at the marketing decisions.
I subscribed
Dude, it was defo made for video.
Instead of nit picking, just look at what you do have with amazing value. Literally nothing comes close for the noney.
AND while the S5II may work for some :) HERE my beef with the Panasonic S system as a filmer and photographer. So while the S series may work for you :) For me it has one >>MORTAL FLAWMORTAL FLAW
There are so many confusing parts in this video, that makes me think you didn’t really do your work before using the camera.
For example you talk about customisation of the buttons, and say that there is only 1, without specifying if you meant on the front, so I will assume in general, which is a lie, any button you see on the camera can be customised at your need and like.
So this is just one thing, then there are many others wrong infos here that I can tell you all of them if you wish.
So please maybe just watch other TH-cam videos about the camera, or go through the menu a bit more, because the are a bunch of miss infos in this video.
But I respect your point of view and experience, but some of the things feel like user errors.
But this is my point of view ofc, from someone who has went through deeply in to this camera, and can say what I am saying is quite right.
S5 II is the worst camera , it has disgusting moire issues, extremely bad autofocus, no inbuild DP filter. Faces without using a mist filter look like oversaturated mummys.
And first of all, the rolling shutter is the worst i´ve ever seen on a mirrorless cam. so bad
118 likes to over 3000 views. It’s the clickbait title that is off putting. If I remember when it launched and the content creators were flown out it was pressed as hybrid and not full fledged cinema.
Amazing how dislikes and preferences become flaws. Very unprofessional. But not surprising.
Spewing views from drama, yikes
This review sucks 😅
Why.
This review is mediocre 👎🏼
one of the worst reviews i have seen in a long time
