Good to see a review that is not sponsored. Makes it more reliable.
Hi Matti, great to have you back in the Lumix-family. Enjoy!!
Thanks!
Let me make it very simple for everybody. I’m a full-time, working wedding and event photographer. I just got this camera and used it for two jobs. I also shoot with a canon R5, which I believe is the benchmark in performance for photography. The auto focus of the Lumix is 85% what the canon is it’s excellent, if you’re shooting photography, I would use zone with human detection on. As a back up you can go to single point, but I very rarely had to do that during high stress situations like during dancing. The colors are absolutely amazing and when I say this I mean from raw it’s very easy to edit to a final product extremely easy actually the 35 mm 1.8 prime and 85 mm 1.8 prime are absolutely excellent lenses tack sharp good character excellent for manual focus and for Video. I give this camera an 8 out of ten I prefer its Af with the new firmware over Sony because even though Sony seems a little stickier many times you get the eyelash or the eyebrows with the Lumix you always get dead center in the eyeball. Don’t listen to TH-camrs, who aren’t professionals. This is a great photography camera as well as video making it excellent for hybrid shooting.
I find the lumix has eyelash af far more frequently and I own both systems.
The biggest thing I agree with there "don't listen to youtubers who aren't professionals" Amen. So much noise on here. Everyone thinks they're an expert.
For people who shoot stills in AF and video with manual lenses, the S5 is a steal currently at less than £1k with 20-60 lens, new. Nothing in full frame photography comes close to its capability at the price.
I totally agree with you.
I shoot stills of fashion, models and events. I love the S5.
Is there eye AF on the S5?
@@Healthy_Tokiread the specs online or google it
I purchased one last year and haven't yet made the time to take it out to see what it will do. I did film a couple of talking head videos in AF (20-60mm lens), and it worked just fine for that -- admittedly, I was pretty stationary, but I do tend to shift forward and back when I talk to the camera, just out of nerves. It worked well for me.
Moi moi..what blows me away is my gh6 stills....that 25 mp sensor is amazing and the 100 mp mode is bringing me stunning stills. I didnt expect that. Video AF ? It aint that bad if you are careful. The color is the best of any lumix camera. Hands down
I prefer the colors of my GH6 over my S5II, and I also prefer the overall image in 5,7K of my GH6 over the 5,9k of my S5II, the S5II looks more digital.
But I can't deny the S5II has fantastic IBIS for a full sensor, very good AF and low light performance.
I couldn’t agree more. DFD is amazing for stills shooters in some situations, but not for sports or BIF. Certainly not for video. I love the user experience of LUMIX cameras compared to Canon, though. Here’s hoping Panasonic can gain some ground after such a long delay incorporating PDAF.
Thanks for your insights.
I will look with great pleasure at his next videos dedicated to this camera. I really like this brand and I love the menu system it has. Thank you.
Thanks!
Maybe the whole hype and nonsense over this S9 camera event will get more people to look at Panasonic. I think Lumix are drastically undervalued. I looked at an S1 recently that was being sold for stupidly low money. That camera was amazingly good apart from the autofocus so I agree totally with what you say. I use a lot of old vintage manual lenses so the autofocus of the S1 isn't much of an issue for that. Then I might go full Lumix for other purposes.
Until a week or so ago, if Panasonic had released a relatively small, light, rangefinder type M43 body with the G9ii sensor, PDAF, etc. I'd have bought it in a heartbeat. I've shot M43 since the original E-M5 and overall have liked the system. I finally came to that decided that there was no upgrade path for me in M43 that would be a small, light, rangefinder body. Sony can pack FF sensors, good image stabilization and tons of features into bodies that are about the same height and width as a GX9 (they are a thicker and heavier). I opted to buy an A6700 cause I don't really feel the need for FF for my uses and the Sigma 18-50 and Sigma 10-18 f/2.8 zooms are relatively small, light, good optically and not wildly expensive. I'm the AF to be truly astonishingly good and think I'll end up with a Sony 70-350 which will give me a workable entry level wildlife, birding, and sports setup. I never added a longish tele to my GX9 or prior M43 bodies. Pained me leave M43, but I wanted a new camera and there was nothing in the current line that had any appeal to me.
Congratulations on your new Lumix camera. I hope you’ll enjoy it. Looking forward to seeing camera’s review and many photo examples.
Thanks!
Agreed and the saddest part is i got my S5 mk1 4 months before S5 mk2 announcement 😭
Really excited to see your full review. I've had this camera for several months and your opinion really matters given your history with this brand.
Thanks! You'll hear from me and my experience with this camera😀
One of the most common comments about MFT is that OMDS should release an updated Pen F and I believe there is a potentially large market for smaller rangefinder-style cameras.
Unfortunately I don't think the camera market in general is large enough to support multiple examples of every conceivable type of camera, but the choice is currently far too limited, being little more than variations on similar themes.
Fuji and Ricoh have the compact market to themselves, currently. I still use my GX80, but Panasonic seem to have little interest in small m43 cameras.
@@borderlands6606 Yes, and that's a complete shame, considering how Panasonic made the smallest and best m4/3 cameras. I have their GX85 and GX850 and would LOVE to see a GX9 Mk II, or a new GM9! (I want to get a used GM5, but their prices are astronomical, if you can find one!)
I, I'm looking forward to your next videos on this camera. I recently picked it up myself as a Sony user. I love this camera as well. I love that it does not overheat. The viewfinder is good quality. The back screen is great quality. You get so much more value for the price. And finally, with auto focus, it makes it a great amazing buy. Great job
Agreeeeee!! I'm a loyal Panasonic shooter since 2015 as I love their cameras to this day but they really missed the content creation boat because of that old auto focus system. Catching up now is not easy.
I'm a simple man. I see Lumix, I like the video.
I have an S1 and its perfect for me x.
Congrats for getting back to the MFT family! Look forward to seeing some images from this camera. Have been contemplating buying a Lumix myself, having bought some of their lenses for my Olympus and finding them lighter and spot on with focusing on-well, most of the time!
Sadly this Panasonic is full frame.
@@ianstobieThanks, I did realise that my lenses would not suit the ‘S’ full-frame, but have been thinking of upgrading my full-frame Sony to a Lumix S.
Hi Matti, thanks for introducing us to your new Panasonic Lumix Camera. It's good to hear about how well the Autofocus works, it's a must to have good Autofocus. It does look very modern and it's not just good camera they make but VHS VIDEOS AND CASSETTES they used to make. Looking forward to seeing the pictures you take, and unveiling your second camera. Thanks Matti. 😊
Lumix S5 for the price is a good camera to get into the L - mount. I agree that Panasonic miss the chance to grow by targeting Content Creator. Sony got this users and now it is difficult that they switch back to Lumix. The FF Lumix should have been introduced with PDAF, but by releasing it with DFD many lost confidence in Panasonic. Right now it is to late. Those people will not switch back when they have now a big pile of E mount lenses.
In technology you need to have the right product at the right time.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Great video 👏👏, so excited for your next videos.
Thank you!
Looks cool and stealthy but unfortunately the dials are almost impossible to read in poor light conditions 😁
It's only the two mode dials that you have to read and you can see the setting on the screen. So, it's not any kind of a deal breaker.
100% agree. I got exactly the same observations.
Great camera, but 3 years too late to dominate the market.
I sold mine S5IiX cause couldn’t afford 2 systems and stayed with my A7IV even though S5IIX is better video camera.
Switching is expensive if you are not sponsored…
i fully agree i was about to buy an S1H when it was released a number of years ago, and i spent two days in store to experiment with it and that no-pdaf microhunting wobbling unreliable hectic video AF killed it today Panasonic is a total niche market, very few cameras and even lenses are readily available here in the local stores. Sony is the new star. But, never too late I am very much interested to give a try to S9. after so many years the S9 might be my first Panasonic camera.
I completely agree with your take on Panasonic's mistake of sticking with DFD for far too long. They really could have dominated and driven prices down for consumers along the way.
It also made me sad that Panasonic remained with DFD for so Long. Maybe Panasonic was still working on their Phase Detection/PDAF formula and they took longer time than the other manufacturers? There is no doubt that PDAF is faster, but accuracy is another thing which is more crucial than a fast AF.
I remember when Nikon switched from DSLR to mirrorless, Z6 and Z7 mark I, that was released in 2018 or 6 years ago. They used PDAF directly, but their AF system had issues with subject recognition and tracking. It took 3 years until Nikon got their PDAF formula right with the release of Nikon Z9 in 2021.
First! Thanks for another great video Mr. Sulanto.
Thanks!
Nice to hear your thoughts about these. A friend has a Panasonic full frame and new firmware came out which upgraded the autofocus system entirely.
It looks like the new FW 2.0 improved AF performance.
I enjoy your storytelling. Glad I clicked on your thumbnail.
Glad you enjoyed it!
So nice to see you holding a Panasonic again! I am also sure you will love the Real Time LUT-feature. It is for me also a game changer-feature in the S5II. Totally changes the editing process (videos and photos). I use it all the time. I can recommend trying especially the LUT's by Julia Trotti. They can be had from Panasonic Australia (Shane also has a video about it).
Thanks! I'll have to try the real time LUT.
The Originale S5 is a damm good Camera for Still photographie, except Sports and birding.
That is so true.
I love the look the colours
I have six month with this camera and really love it. Really a good deal.
Nice photos, Matti. Yes I like Panasonic, too.
My first Digital camera was Panasonic.
But in the past I only had a TZ 101& 202.
Because the lack of reliable autofocus I choose other Systems for "great cameras".
It's a pity, that they waited so long to change the autofocus.
Wish you much fun in using your new Pana...
Thanks once again for sharing your thoughts. Always appreciated😀
The really sad thing is that Panasonic made a m43rds sensor with PDAF in 2013, but Olympus was the only company to use it!
That is something I did not know.
@@mattisulanto the Olympus E-M1's sensor was made by Panasonic.
@@StephenStrangwaysno 😂 it was made by Sony. sony had a massive share in the Olympus company
I agree with you. And they are missing out on the range finder small camera for micro four thirds with updated PDAF to compete with Fujifilm and Ricoh for possibly cheaper cost and added versatility without a fixed lens
The most insightful thing I’ve read on Panasonics decision to not implement PDAF sooner is it requires a sacrifice in colors. I guess if you compare the S5 and S5ii, you’ll see a subtle decrease in colors. I’m not the type of guy that would notice this. Anyway, with that said, Japanese companies can be principled, and they most likely thought that they should not sacrifice color accuracy for snappier AF. With photo that was probably fine, but their cameras were just getting too popular for video… so they had to change.
Must have something to do with the bayer filter arrangement.
This won't be a problem if you downsample the resolution from say 6k down to 4k. It will be averaged out.
This is also why Panny needs to come out with more camera bodies ASAP, esp. the S1Rii and maybe even a retro body- offer consumers a few options to get what they want and that are different from what Sony offers.
I totally agree, I sold my G9 despite loving the images and video I got out of it. Just too many days of going out and having blurry images, or out of focus videos.
you really got me .... planning to buy this camera, so of course I wanted to hear what makes you sad about this camera ... and so I wasted 10 min.
I told you exactly what makes me sad and I'm sorry if that was not good enough for you😀 I'm sure you can find many many excellent reviews that can encourage you to buy this camera. Once you have it and find out how good it is you'll soon forget those ten long minutes that you wasted on my video😀
@@mattisulanto not saying u didnt ☺ ... I have already made my choice, its coming home to me, but then I need to decide what to do with my GH5S and G9 m43 ???
@@kennethrungsted7487 Not saying you said but you said you wasted 10min which indicates my reason to be sad was not good enough for you😀 Anyway, good to hear you decided to buy the camera and I hope you'll have many happy photo/video moments with your new camera.
I don't agree entirely with your sadness. Many people in forums I see have nothing but praise for the S1/S5 original ilnes and the images coming out. Those cameras are going to be looked at as anomalies. I just picked up a S5 w 20-60 for $1,100 and thought I'd sell the 20-60 bc I'd hate it. I love everything about the system and see why it's so well spoken of. I feel like I'm in the best time line being able to team it with a new PDAF for video, but for stills the overwhelming responses I see are there's something special about the OG Panasonic system camera.
hope you find it extremely smooth to use! people saying its clickbait, it really isnt since Matti does at least explain in the video why it saddens him!
idk when id go full frame, unless someone at Sigma is genius enough to develop a lens that does equiv of 200-600mm in the size of a 100-300 then i would.
Interesting video, I have not jumped into full frame. I can not agree with you more a portable smaller camera seems to fit most peoples needs. I bought into Pentax back in the mid 2000s and understand the challenges with seeing camera companies making auto focus advancements and feeling being left out. That being said, I still enjoy the cameras I have and rarely do I ever get someone pointing out a negative from these (challenged) cameras. Looks like the results are great. I use to think newest and greatest is best, but for what I do. Best is not going to make much difference. Thanks for sharing Matti!
Thanks so much for your thoughts. Let's hope we'll see a new compact MFT camera once again.
I think you will find it an excellent camera. I have had the S5ii for awhile now and love it. So many features to try and explore. Enjoy!
Hi there thank you for the video. One thing that would put me off of getting the S5 series is that the viewfinder is only 3.7 million dots compared to 5.7 million dots
Matti there is one issue I read about the Panasonic S5ii that when you use the electronic shutter at 30 frames a second there is about 0.5 of lag before the camera starts taking photos.
Thanks for sharing. That issue does not concern me because I never shoot at 30 fps stills😀
Too many features these cameras have. No wonder people want retro cameras with only a few features. When I shoot film cameras, the one thing that was a problem is quick and accurate focusing of moving objects. The one wish I had was for autofocus. Watching football on TV, I saw how these video cameras did a great job staying in focus. Today, that is about all I really want, great autofocus that is Fast and Accurate. Exposure automation is old, nothing new. These companies are giving us too many things we never wanted. No wonder cameras like the simpler Sony a6000 and A7C line is so popular. They are good, do the job and is not the tinkerer's toy.
Thanks. Those retro looking digital cameras are actually not any simpler that other digital cameras. Under the surface they just like any digital camera but the exterior looks different. However, I agree that cameras have too many features.
And all features are optional, you don't need to use them or even study them, if you are not interested.
Like most are probably only using 10% of their phones' Android or iOS features, and the remaining 90% are left hidden somewhere, and that doesn't really bother.
I think the underlying problem is simply age. Like, really old people are intimidated by things like smartphones, and they want a simple retro phone with just a big simple 1-10 numpad, a one-line LCD display for the dialed number, and that's it. Most hobby photographers are not THAT old yet, but the "Too many features these cameras have" is probably the first vague sign of the beginning of an aversion of aging people against intimidatingly advanced and powerful technology.
No. No. And no. I want all the features...all of them.
I don't have to use all of them. You don't either.
Take what you want, ignore the rest. If the features are overwhelming, put it in iAuto, enjoy composing, and take great shots.
You could always replace the rubber eye cup with a longer one, there are many options out there for all brands. But you can't do the opposite and shrink the viewfinder, and that takes more space in a bag.
That said, smudging the LCD with your nose is annoying. Especially after using sun protection cream..
The rubber cup does not extend the viewfinder. It only extends your eye further away from the viewfinder and makes it harder to see your composition. Especially if you wear glasses like I do.
@mattisulanto Yes, that's true. Additionally, glasses and sunglasses are a problem with all viewfinders; your eye needs to be really centred to see the edges of the composition, and because of the gap, light may also enter and affect the image you see. I make sure I wear my contact lenses when out with a camera!
I have wanted to get an S1R for the 48MP sensor. I do mostly wildlife and landscape and would love the extra detail. And the S1R is very similar to the G9 that I am using now. I love the user experience on the G9 (except for the super sensitive shutter button). I am considering getting a G9ii for the 25MP sensor and it is the same weight as the original G9. I have been experimenting with the 25MP sensor by using the GH6, but that gets heavy after a day of hiking around with it and the 100-400. I’m hoping for an S1Rii someday.
Thanks. The original S1R is a fantastic camera but rather big and heavy. I'm sure Panasonic will release another high resolution camera sooner or later.
@@mattisulanto a hi-res S5ii would be amazing!
btw Best Buy has the s1r on clearance at $2,400 and occasionally a local 'open box' deal much cheaper.
I use the LUMIX S5ii for my Construction Photo / Video business and it’s amazing
The X version looks so tempting over the regular S5II, at just a couple hundred dollars more, but man oh man, I just can't deal with that blackout style, at least on the dials. It should really be the opposite - phosphorescent paint so it glows in the dark and you can see everything. Duh!
One firmware upgrade to the S1/R could get us Live View Composite mode. It's something Panasonic could do but won't.
Thanks for this review. It's a pity that it took Panasonic so long to upgrade the A,F. as you said. Usually they are so responsive to customers needs. I have changed my Lumix G9 for the new G9 m2. As you say, the new phase detect A.F. is excellent, so much better than the previous . All together it is a great new gear , and I would like to hear your opinion ,even though it's not that small.
,as you would like. Yet ,great ergonomics, great features and excellent image quality.
Sorry to hear that you're not as keen on MFT as you were (in fact, you helped steer me toward my first G9, and I recently got a G9M2), as I strongly feel that MFT makes the most sense for the vast majority of photographers at any level. The only exception would be if you never use long lenses, in which case "FF" is still overkill (and I see no point in APS-C), but the penalty for that larger sensor isn't as bad with shorter lenses. In fact, I'm glad that there are larger MFT bodies such as the G9 I/II, as they feel much better in my hands (especially the I) than smaller bodies, such as most Oly/OM, rangefinder styles, and Sony E-Mounts (although the S1/S1R have more bulk than I'd like). I'd never want to deal with the 12-800mm EFL I routinely carry if it weren't for MFT. I don't see why you like the S5II but apparently not the G9II, as their bodies are nearly identical.
I've had few problems with DFD (although I rarely shoot video) and in fact, I'm still trying to figure out the best way to use the G9M2's hybrid system.
Like I said in the video, I like MFT, but I want my MFT small and compact.
Title is clickbait, but you are right...
It's not a clickbait, it's just a good catchy title. Clickbait title is something that the video can't deliver and I explain the title in the video.
Hope the next lumix s1r ii is a high megapixel camera with a stacked sensor and same 30fps and open gate video like the s5iix. also the stealth black look
I think now is time for Panasonic to make more atractive the M43 Sistem. Maybe with cheaper (plasticky) and faster aperture lenses (Primes f/1.0 or f/0.95 AF-lens) to compete with Aps-C crop factor, or with cheaper and smaller m43 camera body (with the Lumix g9 II specs) but that not compete with Aps-C camera price category (like the Fx30, XH2S, Eos R7, A6700) but at the same time give such better alternative, that can make the consumers sacrifice a (cheaper and bigger) Aps-C sensor Cropp for a M43 one.
* It seems nowadays, a fullframe camera with the same specs and performance than A m43 or Aps-C cameras, is ridiculously cheaper than an Aps-C and M43 camera (the case of the Canon R8 & the new Lumix S9).
Because, if there are all at the same price, offer the same specs, sizes and performance, but the sensor is not actually the same size (x2 M43 vs x1.5 Aps-C vs x1 fullframe) and also fullframe and Asp-C are actually cheaper and smaller (the body) and faster (the lenses) than the m43 ones in real life, so it gonna be hard to not choose an Aps-C camera over a m43 ones these days.
So, I think Panasonic must reinvented ther m43 spirit line to gain the heart of camere's consumers again to attract nowadays and succeed
Besides SONY The next go to camera brand for me definitely is Panasonic! Unfortunately full frame camera is too expensive for me! I might go for the G9 Mk2.
Thanks for sharing. I think the S5II and the G9II are in the same ballpark when it comes to the price.
The original S5 is cheaper then G9II.
You should enjoy this camera…heard meany great things about it. Now if you released this a few weeks earlier maybe Panasonic would have flown you to an Osaka for their new camera release! Curious about your second purchase…it wouldn’t be a second one to lend to Robin Wong would it? You guys are fun together!
Thanks. I doubt I would have had a trip to Osaka😀 I will reveal my second new camera soon. We try our best with Robin every time we are together in the same video😀
Panasonic has made very very best hybrid camera features for many years now. I have both Sony and Lumix MFT, but rarely use thew Sony full frame because I like Panasonic features so much more. The only thing I prefer Sony for is Product Showcase on my ZV-E10, or the compactness of my RX100 VII. But mostly I love using my G9 and GH5 II because they suit my needs more often. The Sony AF advantage is for me, very minor compared to the other things where Sony is not as good as Lumix. That includes ergonomics as well as video features, and for stills the brilliant 4K/6K features.
I am not interested in L-mount at all. I refuse to invest in a third lens mount. Panasonic should have done what Sony did, and used the same mount for both full frame, and APSC making it easy to transition between the formats. I think L-mount was the Panasonic decision that makes me sad. I can easily work around the limitations of contrast detect AF. (and incidentally, Sony also gives me a percentage of out of focus AF shots) but I cannot get around the costs that incompatible lens mounts imposes on any thought of buying an L-mount camera.
Thus for me, it is the G9 II that I am saving to buy, and looking forward to using when I can afford it. It is way cheaper to buy that camera, that to invest the big money in camera plus lenses that going L-mount would entail.
I got a s5iix with the sigma 28-70 and it ticks loudly when autofocusing…which makes me sad.
Sorry to hear that and no wonder it makes you sad.
In my limited experience, a tier list for autofocus (photo and video) would be:
1) Sony
|
2) Canon
|
3) Nikon
|
|
4) Panasonic (misses focus in portrait photo)
|
|
|
|
|
5) Fujifilm (less reliable than my old A6000)
Thanks for sharing. I don't think Panasonic misses any more and I never had problems even with the older cameras. But I don't want to dispute your experience because we all have our own way to shoot.
@@mattisulanto if you want to dispute my experience then I would give you all the points you would make 😸. You have a lot more experience than me and I respect your opinion more than mine 😅. But if you can please try to compare the eye autofocus versus Sony one in critical focus. In my experience Panasonic misses the iris more than Sony and Canon and the pictures are delivered slightly out of focus when using a wide aperture (f1.8). But my experience is about just a pair of hours with the camera that was not mine, so not fully reliable experience
@@amermeleitor Let me get some more experience with the S5IIx and maybe at some point I'll compare it to my Sony.
Actually with new firmware i think its on pair with Sony and Canon. I do a lots of weddings and I have better hit rate than my Sony A7III
@@ryszardzokowski812 wow!! That's interesting!! I would try to test a S5ii again. Thanks!
Panasonic had so much potential, but they cooked their own goose by insisting on keeping a bad AF system. Meanwhile Sony rolled onwards and ate everyone's market share. Everyone except Canon, but Canon also suffered because in days gone by people would have switched to Canon but moved to Sony instead.
Hey Matti, how're you? Did I understand your sad thing right: you're sad because Panasonic did not do this good autofocus earlier? Because you've already bought Sony? That's a huge compliment to Panasonic:) thanks for video
It makes me sad to think how Panasonic wasted so many good opportunities by sticking to their own AF system. Sony makes fantastic cameras and they make me happy and so does the S5IIX😀
Phase detection dosent come without a cost. What those paid reviwes wont tell you, is the s5ii has worse low light performance. And they had to slow down the rolling shutter performance in the mark 1 in the latest update. So it wasnt faster than the mk2.
I mean i love my s5 but thats a little unfair.
Thanks for sharing that info. I think for me the PDAF is more important because I could not use the original S5 autofocus for my videos.
Soon we will see a Lumix S9 on The market, a creater TH-cam kind of camera with ibis and same sensor as The S5 but without EVF!.
I am Shure you will be very satisfied with your new camera I am considering to buy an S5ii too.
Is there a lot of size and weight difference to compare to lumix G9.
The camera body is about the same size and weight as the original G9.
@@mattisulanto 🙏 thanks
I did not expect you to get an other full frame camera, the Panasonic Lumix S5IIX is a "Leica SL-2" in anonymous disguise (and much cheaper !). So now I only expect to see if you got the Fuji GFX 100SII !?
The Fuji would be attractive😀
I think it is very sad that both Panasonic and OM system has abandoned the compact and light weight MFT cameras !
I agree 100%.
@@mattisulanto I just saw a rumor that Panasonic are making a very compact FULL frame Camera, maybe we will start to see more compact full frame Cameras, that I have wished for in many years.
You finally came back to Lumix lol
Yeah, I did😀
I understand what you mean, Panasonic made a number of mistakes. But why be down on Pany today? We are hearing all the rumours about the S9 today! If they get it right, they could take a bite out of Sony's market share.
There are always more opportunities. Let's face it, you abandoned Lumix for Sony, now you are holding a new Lumix camera! 🙂😉
Thanks. The S9 sounds like serious business and I hope it can deliver. I actually did not abandon Lumix because of their products, but there were other issues. Anyway, happy to hold a Lumix again.
Honestly, I don't care about the af, as I learned to use manual focus instead. I still have the S1 and use it. One day I will update to the S5ii, but the prices are still to high
Thanks for sharing. Manual Focus is really nice for many situations but not for one a man TH-cam team😀
Sadly it has still a huge crop on 4k 60p. Thats the main reason im still with my G9.
I like to see more Lenses like fx the compact and light weight Panasonic S 100mm 2.8 Macro Lens.
Is this version 2 firmware.
I have the latest FW version which is 2.0.
Odd, i get exactly what I want from the s5ii every time without exception. The AF hasnt failed me in any scenario and situation. Maybe you have some habits you are carrying over from other cameras
Maybe you did not listen to what I said. Please watch the full video and concentrate a bit. I'll make it easier for you. I said the DFD autofocus (all Lumix cameras prior the S5II) was not good for fast action or video. I said the S5IIX AF is great.
Does anyone out there actually know why Panasonic delayed a competitive AF system for so long? Was there a good reason? I'm pretty sure many 'casual' video users simply gave up on Panasonic when it was easy to buy a reliable AF system (I pretty much only use the Olympus E-M1 mk ii for video) and keep your M43 lenses! Great video Matti.
Thanks. I have not heard of any good reason for them not to move to PDAF earlier but there must be a reason.
@@mattisulanto I think panasonic tried pushing DFD to its maximum limit until they couldnt push it any further is my speculative guess.
Simply the didn’t want to pay license to other manufacturers IP. Has nothing to do with the fake information that Sony didn’t want to sell them PDAF sensors.
They actually claim for so long that PDAF destroy image quality which is true. They work on image processing to counter that thats offical statment from Panasonic. Google it, and you find many info about that.
I have heard not wanting to sacrifice image quality. The S1s/S5 OG have top sensor ratings. There are many who say the s5ii/x images are not as crisp as the S5.
... older pana models with "inferior" af are best value cameras. g9/g90 and s1 are today hard to beat.
casual user is buying based on reviews and not on a base of own essencial requirements.
but time has changed, most important thing is tracking autofocus and stock jpeg quality😢. i think that the user experience with the body is also important. people are buying full frame from sony and for street/ travel&landscape are using phones. maybe this topis should be aimed by influencers, not just the autofocus and stock jpeg.
... you did not wait for pana s9, c'mon 😉.
If I waited for every possible upcoming new camera I'd have no camera right now😀
Congrats on the new camera! The human eye/face/body tracking option will be better than your Sony when you’re at a distance it works so well for video. I think most TH-cam gurus left it on eye only which is not as good generally. Great to see you with this camera it’s a monster 😀📸 congrats Matti! Well done. 👍
Thanks for the tip mate. I think I had the eye only for my testing and I still impressed. I have to try the other option.
G9ii next? :D
More cameras should have lighted buttons like red to be seen at night... Thanks!
Thanks. That is so true. We need lighted buttons.
I can't seem to identify the model at round the 2:32 mark...
GX880
@@mattisulanto ohhhh I didn't know about that model...!
@@AmedeeBoulette I think the same camera may have another model number in other parts of the world.
@@mattisulanto yeah... I share your frustration, I've been waiting for years to see an evolution of the compact models, like the GX85, but it seems it's dead... Same for Ricoh GR III. They now have 7 variants, with the new diffusion model they introduced this week!
I still hold on to my Z6 II in the meantime, but I can't wait to switch to a lighter setup...
I’m willing to bet they’ll make a MFT version of the coming S9
Isn't that the G9II already?
A G internals with the S body, and the good things from both worlds, with the new features from the S5II-GH6. Also, the S series, are FF, and the G and GH series are MFT. An S9 with MFT would break that.
They need to make the successors of the S1 series with a great sensor, without putting too much video features, and focus on photography with those.
So many hybrid cameras. We need more focused cameras now.
except G9ii and gh6 have huge bodies, which kinda defeats the point of mft. Having an mft version of the s9 would bring back the market that wants compact mft cameras that they had back with the gx series
@@jakeohare913G9II is focused for photographers, doesn't mean that being MFT should have a GX body. Also GH6 is a video production camera, is not meant to be compact, again, like the GX series.
I don't know why you're mentioning an S9. It doesn't even exist. But yeah, we all want a compact GX9II or GX10, to bring back that little market for travelers and street photographers.
I couldn't agree more concerning MFT. I give away all my Olympus gear and switched to S5II with 24-105, 18 and 85 plus Sigma 45 and, since yesterday, the compact Pana 28-200. I'm still learning, but get better every day.
My wife still owns the GX9, with 14-140 and 1.7/15, and that's a nice every day camera.
Panasonic should be so happy that Sigma joins the L-Mount, so Panasonic shooters have the same lens range as Sony, concerning Sigma.
Hope Tamron will join also. Hardly can wait for the 2-2.8/35-150, which is a people photography killer. Perhaps at least Samyang will finally deliver their 35-150.
Thanks for sharing. There is indeed a pretty good lens selection for Lumix S cameras because of Sigma.
Lol it turns out it was Panasonic's conscious decision to have bad AF.
I think the Panasonic Lumix S lineup of bodies and glass is amazing. I win a S1R, and it has one of the most comfortable grips and ergonomics in the the market. I was never bothered with the DFD system personally, as it has zero impact on my use case; however, it always saddened me that it was preventing those who care from trying an otherwise excellent system. I hope it's not too late for them to recoup some of that market share. The more competition we have, the more we all benefit, and these guys have very competitive products.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.
Proper photographer don't want tiny micro 43 camera they want easy to hold with big lens camera body
That's how all the current new MFT cameras are so you as a proper photographer should be happy😀
I keep making mistakes by saying Olympus and then oops... OM System too!
Yeah, impossible to forget the Olympus name and the legacy. They keep on coming back and haunting us😀
I don't get it. My gh6 AF is pretty good....
afaik its adjustable, isnt it? is yours tweaked?
It's good but the G9II and the S5II are better, especially for video.
Not my experience sir...and my gh6 brand new was half the price. @@mattisulanto
@@mattisulanto Only when it comes to AF, the GH6 is still a video monster.
@@daviddornblaser4512 Sure, if you don't need AF it's a beast.
New Fuji is old lumix win AF
Why do you have black tape over the name of the body? Doesn't make sense to me. Plus, the color looked pretty green to me.
Regarding those black letters on the camera, please watch the video😀
You mentioned you are going to explore two new systems. One of them is Panasonic S5 IIx. The other one should be either Canon, Nikon or Fuji.
I have a feeling that you would choose Fuji X-T5 and experience their film simulation!
Let’s also address the fact that Panasonic has not provided real cinema camera options compared to Sony and Canon.
A lot of professionals who need a modern cinema body do not have that upgrade option with panasonic. Panasonic needs to release their fx6 or c70 competitor or they’ll continue to lose more of the market.
Good point. Maybe we'll se a cinema version S body in the future.
@@mattisulanto hopefully they hit it out the park with an S1Hii! If somehow they brought internal NDs into it, I could see a lot of people jumping onto an S1Hii
Hi Matti, you would be so much happier if you bought an OM-1.
I think you would be happier if I bought the OM-1😀 The OM-1 is not designed for me, unfortunately.
Had to smile about pushing your nose against the screen, I do that all the time on my Sony and it's annoying as the screen gets smudged. The Lumix is a much better design
Thank you for your video as usual. I always enjoy your video. When a professional photographer purchases a camera for his work, he makes numerous compromises in his choice of camera. He may buy a large camera. He may buy a heavy camera, etc. while he does not like to carry a large, heavy camera. When he has to, he has to. However, when one buys a camera for pleasure, the selection criteria are much stricter: it has to look beautiful, it has to have Leica engraved on it, and so on. This is because a hobby camera is not a necessity, but a luxury item. You do NOT need to own that camera, no, not at all, but it is nice to have that camera, say simply because it has Leica engraved on it, etc. No, that camera does not have to give you better image quality nor anything. Not at all. It is a hobby. Absolutely no reason, nor excuse, necessary to buy a new camera in case photography is a hobby. A new gear is nice, period. It makes your life happier. So, in my case, I am waiting with anticipation for the Lumix S9. Enjoy your new camera and I am looking forward seeing your next video.
The prints will look the same.
That's good to hear😀
Congratulations you have money to throw away.👍🏽
We all throw money away one way or the other and you are no exception😀
I have this camera and the Ibis is so good that I sold my gimbal... The new E-Stabilization high mode is literally like a gimbal.
Not really it does 6k new 24mp sensor a fan traded my old s5 for s5ii much better
I have no problems with the auto focus on the S5. It works for me, its all about the settings!
I'm so happy to hear you have found perfect settings for your shooting style.
