My tips as a person who has gone through this cycle many times (and is currently keeping a moderately clean house, compared to the depression pit I lived in for almost two years)
    1)Everything should have its place
2)If you have no space to put something you either need more furniture (especially utilitarian stuff like shelves and storage boxes/cubbys) or less stuff
3)Try to declutter regularly. I break this up into very small spaces so it doesn't overwhelm me. Like declutter one drawer or one shelf in the closet. Something that can get done in 15-30 minutes or less. Idk about other people but I have a habit of bringing a lot of stuff into the house (I frequent thrift shops and estate sales) so I make sure to go through my things often. Luckily I don't have a hard time getting rid of stuff(except for the chore of actually taking the box to good will), but I know many people who live in squalor do.
4)Naming it. For a while I had a hard time because I believed I was just a messy person naturally. I didn't realize for way too long that it was a symptom of my mental illness and isolating habits. I found the squalor survivors website and it was incredibly helpful. It was comforting for me to have a name for what I was forcing myself to live in. They break it up into four levels of squalor and that really helped me gauge where my mental health was and put into perspective just how bad my situation was. Going from max clean for one day and then utter filth for months was so normal to me and I had put up this big defensive wall about my situation.
5)Do it the easy way. Every single task, do it the easiest way possible. Part of my problem was a mental block. I would look at a massive chore I needed to do and then think of the proper/best way to handle the problem. Then I'd get overwhelmed with all the steps that would take and keep ignoring the mess. For example the garbage was (is) always a hard thing for me. My house was in such a state that I wouldnt be able to fit all of the garbage into my cans. On top of that it was everywhere, to the point that it would take me an hour to even collect it all. So every week I would avoid it and miss taking out my cans at all and the problem would compound. Now I know that if it doesn't go out the night before, it doesnt go out. So I made that deadline instead of putting it off even further and missing the morning pickup. And if I am dead exhausted and I can only collect one bag of trash before taking the bin to the curb, then I at least do that. Also I used to feel guilty about using less environmentally cleaning supplies(like reusable rags vs disposable wipes/paper towels, or products that come in plastic). Now I just say screw it. I need a clean environment and they make it easier for me to clean.
6)If you have money, pay for a cleaner. It isn't terribly expensive to get someone to clean for an hour a week. They will be more efficient than you and it will take a load off your mind. Also it gets someone else into your house that isn't you, which puts a little psychic pressure on you once a week to do a pre-clean. I would consider it like another utility if you have a hard time justifying the cost. Some people can't spare the extra $100 a month but if you can budget it, do it.
7)I'm not terribly consistent but I try to do a "closing time" on my house. At night (but before you're super tired, maybe 3 hours before bed) I make my rounds in each room and tidy a bit. Throw away all garbage and at minimum take your dishes to the sink (also find the best time for you to do dishes, I personally like doing them in the morning after breakfast or right before cooking dinner provided I'm not too hungry). Put everything you can that's not in it's proper place, away. This will keep your house tidy, if not actually clean. For me, the minute I leave "tidy" I move into filth.
8)Some people find it helpful to set timers, my favorite thing is to do that with media. If I have a podcast that is in hour long, I'll just make it my goal to clean for the length of my podcast and see what gets done. I save the ones I really look forward to to make it more enjoyable. Chapters of audiobooks, movies, or episodes of tv in the background all make great time markers.
9)Take breaks. Cleaning for a long period of time is super exhausting, build in breaks to keep momentum and when you can feel that you are depleted , stop. Make sure to eat snacks and drink plenty of water and take breaks to sit down. I used to push myself to clean for 4-6 hours without a proper break which is just miserable.

I don’t actually mind cleaning. It’s easy I think to let things slide especially with depression. Some days it’s all I can do to get to and. from work. Just wish when I got things cleaned and organized it wouldn’t get messed up again!

There is a method in wich you leave the things in the same place after usin it. It sounds silly but saves alot of time and keep things organized

I do a little every day. Once a week, a bag goes to Goodwill. Sometimes a box goes to Goodwill. Extra linens go to the homeless shelter. There is so much.
Recycling and trash go out every night. I don't have the energy for a huge declutter session. Tina

I understand how daunting the feeling of cleaning up a neglected room, but there comes a day when you become tired of the mess, our the mess makes you sick. Just keep fighting and know you are stronger the whatever is holding you back

  • @kimkosyjana9511
    @kimkosyjana9511 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'm so proud of you! I've totally been there. The rest of my house was moderately clean, but I had that one room like this, I couldn't bring myself to clean. I go in cycles with my depression that way. Once it's clean, I become almost obsessive compulsive with keeping it that way until I fall into another depression episode. Right now, I'm in over cleaning mode. I just cleaned my depression room 2 weeks ago and I am driving myself insane making sure it doesn't get how it was again.
ETA. I will go from a room like this, to cleaning it and on hands and knees for searching a spec of dirt I missed when cleaning. There is literally no in between for me.

    Some easy step
💛 pick up all trash ( including dishes )
💛 pick up stuff off floor where they belong
💛 put things where they belong ( desk, dresser, night stand, etc )
💛 make bed ( wash if needed )
💛 Wipe counter & mirrors, sweep, mop ( vacuum if you have carpet )
✨💛 I BELIEVE IN ALL OF YOU 💛✨

    here are a few tips:
    1. i know its ahrd esspecially when your mental health sucks but just clean things as you go along (ex. you have are changing your clothes. then put the items away (clothes) right after you use it.) therefore you clean up small messes and not one hug multi day one.im pretty bad at that one so another thing that i do from collecting a ton of stuff is everytime i get something new i get rid of five items ect. i hope it helps! i really helped me

I watch your videos whenever I need motivation, when I was a fashion design student my room used to look like this ,even messier than this, but I got rid of the stuff that was not useful, I would suggest you to get rid of extra stuff that you don't need or use,if you own less stuff it's easier to take care of them and manage them💕

This is realley great work. You deserve to have a neat and organized space! I couldn't help but to notice the little amount of shelfspace/storagespace that you have. I highly recommand having shelves, because then everything will have its own place and you don't have to box it up just to take it out everytime you want to use it. This leads to being unmotivated because it is more work. Hope it helps someone :)

My tips: once a day go through and get rid of dirty dishes and garbage in both your room and bathroom. Maybe invest in something to hold your clothes off the floor. You can’t keep things organized and clean without some place to put your things.

I know how difficult it can be to live with depression and other mental helth issues. My home is definitely not as bad as yours, but I can't even do once what you did here, and you've managed to do it THREE times! You really should be very proud of your achievement. I'm hoping your health improves soon, so that you don't have to do it again. ❤

I know it's hard but maybe once you've gotten the order of the room where you like it then evaluate things by category. Don't rush it just really look at a drawer or shelf and decide if anything is broken, expired, fits, makes you feel good or if you want it. It could help you create more space for the things you use and like.

Hiii girly💖 I saw on one of your videos that you are going to get rid of 75% of your stuff. That is a really awesome decision that you made for yourself! I definitely suggest you try minimalism. It's all about keeping the things that bring value to your life. You can have a collection or two, but everything else is minimal. It's different for everyone; definitely not one size fits all.
I know what it's like to live in utter chaos and clutter, too; I suffer from depression, anxiety and adhd. I can relate to you, hon!

have a schedule for cleaning. Friday start sorting out garbage, spray down bathtub and toilet w detergent, change sheets and do laundry. Saturday mopping, folding clothes, microfiber wiping down bathroom and everywhere. Sunday tidy up the rest. Each day by 10pm throw out all garbage. My tips would be to throw away packaging of anything you finish, the moment you finish or unpack it. Like a soda can, anything that contained food or a wrapper, plastic bag, or cartboard box. Those things get taken away by the trash on a weekly basis anyway and you don't have to think about throwing it. It's a good thing you have decorative boxes under your bed that hold things together. Maybe a desk or a dresser would help with an extra space to work at your laptop on/keep your paperwork, or just to have extra drawer space for things that would otherwise end up on the floor like cables and electronics. Just trying to think along, assuming you live in some kind of student dorm situation? Temporary? Shared kitchen?

Oh yeah.. Your douchy comment really shows what a well-adjusted, normal human you truly are. 🙄
