The interviewer asked necessary and sensitive questions without sounding condescending. And he answered with heartfelt honesty without self pity. No doubt he’ll do well in life. This is an eye opener and very much appreciated.
He recognizes that this is a necessary step to move forward with his education and life. Starting a life from humble origins really builds strong character in my opinion.
People who start like this...they usually end up building castles. Right now he’s just gathering his bricks. I hope he is successful. He’s so hardworking and determined Edit: DAMN! Some people really lack positivity and are just so pressed 🙂. To everyone out there working & struggling...know your efforts will pay off. Don’t give up
@harsh sinha the perspective that once you're poor it's incredibly difficult to claw your way out of that situation and to imply otherwise is incredibly naive and ignorant of actual reality and statistics.
The lady that did the interview is great, her manner, her tone, her approach and the relevant questions she asked, makes her outstanding, she has a friendly nature
If you're young and just starting out in a job, this isn't actually bad especially if you spend most of your time outdoors or at work. I prefer this than pretending to have a spacious room that I can't afford with my.meager income.

I am Hyeondong from this video. It's been a long time since I watched a video. I am currently working and living very well. 😀 Thank you so much for your support. I recently created a new TH-cam channel with the goal of becoming global. I hope you are always happy too!!
Glad to hear u know I watched this video around 2 yrs ago and today again I watched it and I literally prayed to Allah that you are safe and sound and now I feel satisfied I heard that Korea is a depressing country so I was worried life is about being happy contented and satisfied with what you have .take care
My heart completely melted when he said he picked the cheapest place because he didn't wanna burden his parents. He seems like someone you could easy be friends with because of how sympathetic he is.
He kind of good person, but the word sympathetic is a bit so sad for him. Lucky for him, he should slowly doing fine, maybe compassionate could be his next grow up
It's kinda just sympathy vs empathy, I originally said selfless because being empathetic is a quality of selflessness. Sympathy is showing compassion when something bad has happened, I guess its not wrong but empathy is more correct in my opinion.
Everyone goes through hardship in life. When I got disowned by my family at 18, I found myself a box room he charged me £50pm. I use to wake up ready for work at 4am to clean a university. I had a dream to complete my studies. I have to drop out as I couldn’t travel to college 2.5hrs every day! I never had enough money for food. I only worked 16hrs a week. I was broke weeks on end with no saving no money, I was starving drinking water and couldn’t sleep bcoz of hunger, my shoe broke, I couldn’t buy washing clothes detergent😢 Now I’m married for 8yrs, have a supporting husband and a 1 year old son. I’ve completed my bachelors degree and finish my Msc. I’m living in a 3 bedroom flat. I have savings, I have a car also, travelled to a few places around the world. Life does get better, but you have to struggle and work hard for a better future, no one will spoon feed you! ❤️
I am an American living in Southern California. I've known some Korean friends here and I've been impressed by the respect that is culturally ingrained in Korean youth for their elders. This is even shown in Korean language because young people.use different words towards elders in ordinary conversation to show respect. Very different from attitudes of American youth towards elders!
Agree with you! When I watched this video, I remembered how embarrassed I was to take money from my parents to pay for my graduate studies. My parents are wealthy people, but I always wanted to achieve everything on my own
It's nothing special really. It's basic Confucian values, which are the basis of societal ethics in the Sinic World (Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese), which actually has its share of the UGLY SIDE too compared to Western ethics, which are based on Judeo-Christian principles.
I understand it's the norm in Asian culture but I'm used to seeing entitled western children and the fact he verbally and by actions expressed his concern for his parents several times impresses me. Think about it he's willing to live in the equivalent of a American walk in closet to save his parents money highly commendable in my opinion
Subscribe to his TH-cam so we can get him the views and subs he deserves, he does vlogs and such , he has a beautiful heart and I wanna help him get a bigger home
I am Korean and lived in a Goshiwon too. When I moved from my hometown to Seoul for a job after finishing my study, there was no money and no option but Goshiwon. I lived for almost one year before leaving the country. Yeah, I am the one of the "I can not deal with this shXX" minded Korean persons. Anyway, it's not a place I think it should be available legally in Korea but the government can not do much. In fact, many people will not find a place to live at the cheap price in Seoul. Where do they go? street or park? This is one of stories Koreans don't want to share but this student seems brave enough to talk about it in open mind. in any countries, there are good and bad things together and this is one negative thing when living in the country.
This is not that bad 300 dlls a month.. imagine how much would it be in Hong Kong, San Francisco for that little space.. and nobody actually force anyone to live in big cities and pay that high pricy rent.. it’s expensive because of demand.. that’s just how it’s.
300 is how one the cheapest social housing costs in my country. most spaces that you rent cost between 400 to 670 in social sector and normal sector between 700 to 2000 or more euros. which is even higher in USD. Buying a home is mostly done I think but is very expensive right now. Between 300000 and 1000000. Most normal houses cost around 300000 and 500000 I think. I do think it depends how much money you earn each month. Some countries get paid more then others.
drainact probably just venting his anger cause he is trying to be someone and he sees other people who arent doing anything with their lives. although i do hope for this person to be successful and be a doctor, he should probably be more open minded and get rid of his potential superiority complex
@John Wayne Calm yourself, It's not all about you, other people have their own plights to deal with. If you plan to be a doctor, you should learn to be mature.
He's living like this but he still decides to keep himself looking clean and well-kempt. Some of y'all he livin a life of luxury and yet have some questionable hygiene.
There was this journalist who raised controversy in my country by saying "no matter how poor you are, you have money for soap". It's important to be hygienics despite your financial situation.
I soooo admire this guy. He is sensible, hard working, humble, clever. He has a lot of respect for the efforts made by his parents to support him in university and he does his best to help them. His parents must be really proud of such a mature and committed son. It looks like they raised him the best way. I don't know if this is typical in Korean culture, but he is completely different from the millions of pampered, rotten spoiled Italian "students" that exploit their parents to have luxury clothing, cars, holidays and they don't even clean after themselves (mummy does all the cleaning and cooking for them!) let alone study hard!!! Many Italian families should take lessons from this guy!! I wish him all the best for his future job and personal life. You go guy!!
He will be success with that right mentality, btw I actually expecting a dirty toilets and kitchen since they’re communal but, turns out the rice is always prepared and the kimchi too, separated level according to gender, clean hallways.. it’s pretty nice
He seems like a hard worker who takes his studies seriously and is willing to put up with living in the equivalent of a closet because it is the responsible thing to do. He'll probably remember being stuck in that cramped little room and use it as motivation for success as he gets older. Hard work now will pay off later, and before you realize it the hardships you endured will be over. As long as he maintains a good attitude he'll probably do well in life.
@ITACHI UCHIHA I'm feeling alot of things after reading your comments. I'm surprised that you seriously think science have answers to all of your questions and a little bit sad that you don't are confused between religion and humans. I honestly feel you've been through a lot in life.
He is making this sacrifice so his parents don't have to support him so much. He clearly states this. He can take out loans there for more money as a student, but he doesn't and he also doesn't want much help from his parents. THAT is what shows his strong character. What shows his perseverance is that he does this until he finishes his education, and maybe stays a bit longer until he can afford to move to a studio.

This is living smart. My friends did only bed spaces, meaning they shared the room and only had the bed as their space. Now they are Doctors and other professionals😊
There's no offense at all. I wholeheartedly agree with you. I'm a student myself and I shared a big room with another student as well, after time he come out that he was gay and he told me that he loves me 🤢🤮🤮. I freaked out and since then I live alone by myself.
The way he talks and his outer appearance makes me feel like he's a humble and down to earth man. I feel very sad watching this knowing I have my own spacious room and a house. I wish he will have a prosperous life and become successful after his studies. I am also a college student and I feel very blessed after watching this. I wish I can help all these people 🙏🏻. A very hard-working man like he does will have his time as well. Have faith in yourself and you will be there too! Also, to all the people like him living in a place like this, don't give up! Life is still beautiful .
Hey everyone! I want to dispell some rumours that I've seen in the comments. I lived in a Goshiwon for about 6 months when I was working holiday visa in Korea. Let me tell you: they are horrible. Doesn't matter which one you get, they are all awful. Many people have written if you just organise the space properly, it wouldn't be too bad - but there's way more to it then that. For starters, goshiwons are often built in old buildings. There is also often no AC and the windows (usually) can't be opened fully to let air in. Because of this, air circulation is poor. Older people often smoke in their rooms and you can smell it from your room. Mould grows easily in the bathroom because of the humidity. Because the space is so small also, you'll find that it gets dirty really really quickly. Because obviously there is less places for your hair/dust to disperse. It often gets bad no matter how much you clean it. There is very rarely a window big enough to let in enough natural light, most goshiwons don't even have a window to the outside: only a window to the hallway of the Goshiwon complex. This makes the rooms dark. The lights are those ultra blue white lights and they're just awful lol. You'd be surprised how many low income people live here. Many older people who don't have family and can't afford somewhere often live in goshiwons. Many foreigners also do as well. Especially since the wage in Korea is pretty awful for an entry job and the deposit is really high for apartments. Goshiwons are about 300-500USD a month depending on where you live and the size. I got a bigger one so it was about 500 USD per month. Most goshiwons also have shared bathrooms. I was lucky because I had an average paying job and I could afford one with a bathroom, but ones with shared bathroom are much more common. You share with both women and men, with about 6 other people, and they get disgustingly dirty Many students live here to focus solely on studying for their exams. I had my Korean friends told me they lived In a Goshiwon for a short time and they wouldn't wish it on anyone, it's that bad. And I agree. It's depressing. It's claustrophobic, dirty and dark. Most people can only live in them for a few months at a time
@Maxim Kontsevich not once did I mention the average wage? So how can you know? The minimum wage is about 9$USD an hour and that's a pretty common wage for anybody at entry level or most foreigners.
I suddenly remembered that scene in Reply 1988 which Deoksun visited her sister's dorm (Bora). She got emotional seeing the size of her sister's room without knowing the situation of how she is struggling to live in that place and how can she manage to study there despite of her environment. It was an eye opener for everyone especially for those students who are working hard and doing their best to achieve their dreams.
This is temporary. You can tell Hwang is a very humble guy and this situation is clearly building his character (Life/God/The Universe? works in mysterious ways). I just pray loneliness won't mess his goals while he's actively working hard and doing his best to finish his studies then find a decent job. Stay strong bro 💪🙏
Megumi, don't mind the troll I won't even name down there. Your thoughts and prayers were kind and respectful, and I hope Hwang reads them. Bless you !
@@flonoiisana4647 it's ok, I ignore them everytime 🙄 thank you for caring btw. I was actually hesitating to specifically mention "God" because on this plateform called youtube it always generates absurd debates about religion. I thought ppl would understand that it could mean whatever or nothing at all or simply going through life itself. I know alot of students are probably enduring similar challenges while struggling/surviving. Let's hope their perseverance will pay off.
I admire this guy with all his honesty, no pretensions and he does not show any self pity. It helps to be contented with what you have at the moment but continue to aspire for something better. I love his attitude towards his studies, how he work hard for it. With this attitude, he will do well in life. I hope this could be viewed by many young people and get inspired by what he does. I am praying for this guy to be successful. God bless you. Stay healthy and happy. Be hopeful.
Young Korean men work extremely hard. They have inspired me to push myself harder. I've never lived in a goshiwon but I did live in a half-basement (반지하 원룸) one-room with a Korean roommate. I saved a lot on rent and did a language exchange with my roommate.
@@redzyakuza it makes sense with south korea being a country where lots of ppl have higher education and credentials, why would any of them want to do manual labour if they have the qualification to get an office job? plus in a place where social status matters a lot, it's definitely more appealing to say "i work at XXX company" than "I work at a farm"
You don't know what a gosiwon life is really like unless you've actually lived in one. I'm Korean myself, born and raised in Seoul, and when I was a young boy, my family had a hard time financially and so I ended up in one of these gosiwons. Needless to say, it was like hell, suffocating and all. No windows, hardly any ventilation, no soundproofing whatsoever. It looks like it's private but not really. The worst part of it is the lack of space. We humans are animals after all and we need SPACE. You don't get that in gosiwon and you don't realize that until you actually have the experience of it. It feels like you're stuck in one of those "cubes" in the movie "Cube", but much smaller. Or you could compare it to a solitary confinement cell in prison. It's THAT BAD. Those who choose to stay there choose to stay there not because they want to but because they have no other choice. They all want to get out of there as soon as possible. If you really want to know what I'm talking about, go find one in Seoul and try it out for yourself.
Honestly it's mostly about managing your expectations. If you go in there expecting the worse then it can only go uphill from there. Judging by how positive and humble he is, I believe he managed those expectations extremely well. You can't expect a gosiwon to be a cosy home. It should be meant solely for you to sleep and barely enough to fulfill your most basic needs.
These places should be banned! A total exploitation of real estate sharks. The south Korean govt can create affordable housing with much better architecture for low income ppl but instead continue to allow developers to build ugly tower blocks for massive profit. It's incredible how corrupt the South Korean govt is by allowing this trend to continue.
Couldn't you just leave the residence for leisure? You don't even have to buy anything, just take a walk around the park and people watch or something. Literally, you are only stuck because you choose to be. It's not like gosiwon is a prison. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. In this case, a place to sleep at night.
TheAsianOneWC Actually, some residents even live in cardboard boxes in the halls of residential buildings. They’re barely big enough to fit them to be honest. Also, I found out that if somebody died in one of them, they would go unnoticed for weeks or maybe even months because nobody really cares or knows.
FerdDoesWeirdThingsInLife Hong Kong is expanding a bit in the richer district with the airport; they’re filling up the shallow parts of the sea to make more land for residential and commercial buildings.
He seems extremely humble hard working and level headed. This financially is extremely smart. I know too many college students who live beyond their means. They end up being put out of their overly expensive apartments before everything is said and done . His hard work will definitely pay off! This to me is more or less a college dorm room!
Those are spoiled and dumb kids. Almost every student that i know of in my country get an apartament with other students, you can spend less then 300€ (ofc it depends where, some places might be lower, some higher) and live decently for years. Some of my friends that works still prefered to get a room and divide expenses with other strangers instead of going solo and risking to have no money at the end of the month...
I feel really inspired after seeing this. some things he said really make me want to be more productive i.e. cut out distractions and be more efficient so far as it concerns my life aims and goals. such a cool interview
while watching this video, i took a look at my room and realized that i have never been grateful for these blessings. I am not pitying this boy because i know that he will achieve his goal one day because hard work never goes to waste.
You attract who you are. If you're an ugly person, inside and out, then that's what you'll get. With such bad attitude, you are bound to get that right back. I've lived in Seoul most of my life and all I see are very attractive, well educated and kind people. The Goshiwon was originally started for students who want to isolate themselves so that they could focus on their studies without distractions. Both people from out of city and within city used these facilities. However, now it seems many different people use it for different reasons. The size of the unit was made specifically for no nonsense living because you have a set goal and life will be improved if you succeed. That's the inspiration it's supposed to give. People who really study understand what this means. There's a flower that blooms from patience, hard work and struggle. This gentleman is attending a good university. Korea has a lot of universities due to the demand. According to a Time Magazine article, Korea has the highest university educated population in the world, 85% at the time of report. To Koreans if you get into a university in Seoul, it is considered to be a success. Dongguk University is an old and well respected university, this is why the youtuber was proud to let the interviewer know where he was a student at. SKY, as in the kdrama is the acronym for the top three universities: Seoul U, Korea U, Yonsei U. not necessarily in this order. From his revelation of his life and his somewhat calm demeanour, he does not seem to be from a "poor" family. Usually, if he came from very difficult background, he'd be unable to attend a school, he would be working full time. Also if he is a student, he would be very busy working at some convenience store, delivering food, or some other part time jobs in order to pay for his tuitiona and daily costs. Sometimes, Korean parents will not support their child once they get into a school in order to nurture their self reliance. This is because up until then, their parents basically do everything for them which costs a lot of money. This guy obviously studied really hard to get into Dongguk and him being very natural and confident about discussing his personal life tells me that his family is not poor. However, he has good parents who taught him good things and he appreciates all of the help he gets from them. He is one of the better people. If he came from a very poor family, he would have a complex and tried to hide it. There's a way of telling; Koreans can tell right away. Lots of Koreans are wealthy, especially in Seoul, that's why housing prices and cost of living is out of this world. And yes, many people live exactly if not better than you see in the kdramas. As for meeting a rich oppa, you get who you are. Quality people of course want to meet other quality people. This is not just unique to Koreans. However, Koreans are more aggresive about this. This is of course a general statement but it is true. The best way of meeting a good person is to be good yourself. That is why working on yourself if a win-win situation. Don't search, you won't find one because you won't look attractive to a quality person. They know what they are looking for. There are lots of attractive Korean men. They're well educated, kind, generous, swag and good to women. Best of all, they're clean. However, you have to understand their position,, they're not going to just date anyone. If they respect themselves, they'll going to want to meet someone just as respected. It's only common sense. They worked hard to be that person and so they expect the same from their partner. Visit Korea to enjoy and experience our long running and rich culture. Learn the truth behind our very sad history--criminal japanese occupation--and our great story of survival. There's so much to see, do and eat!!! People who complain about Korea or Koreans, need to look in the mirror. Of course, like everywhere else in the world, Korea also has bad apples. But as I say, the ugly get other uglies. For me, I always approach perople and things with a positive mind and because of this, I can't say that I've had many bad experiences nor met bad people. People like positivity no matter where you are from. And, trouble finds other trouble. Hope this helps and hope to see you in Korea in the future. Stay safe and 안녕!!!!!

I don’t get it? Isn’t it the parents job to support the child until they can go off on their own? My parents pay for my college and I am going to pay for my kids college when I am a adult
Siddharth Nandi Oh sorry I miss worded my comment. I was not referring to parents that wish they could afford to help their children pay for college but aren’t able to. I was referring to parents that can pay for college but choose not to because they think “he/she is a adult so they have to do it themselves”. My friends parents had this mentality and he had to get a full time job while in college and he became depressed and his grades tanked. I just don’t get why parents wouldn’t want to support there child if they have the means to do so. In my culture you’re supposed to support your children if you can until they can do it alone. Maybe other cultures just think it’s normal to kick there kid to the curb when he/she turns 18z

Also I hope these places Goshiwon that are mostly close to colleges and schools mostly rent to students who are in school. I like the Korea do things like this. I live in a one room before and it was smaller than his room it was hell. I hope this beautiful woman date this guy, she ask brave questions and seems comfortable around him.
Lots of countries are far more open about what they have and what they earn. In my opinion this is a good thing. Related: I think salary secrecy breeds and enables inequality where I am from.
Lou M-H I don’t think salary secrecy is what they are talking about, but rather privacy and what is considered courteous in the US and other western cultures. The salary secrecy you are talking about is what is done with in a company, for example telling employees that talking about earnings is considered gossip and gossiping is a fire-able offense. In Korea, asking one’s earnings is just a part of the norm, but in my area that is t something you would talk about with strangers. I personally put finances up there with religion and politics as touchy conversation topics.
When I was stationed in Korea I loved the people there. Their culture, their food, and the way they respected themselves and those around them. Never seen a kdrama but living their several years allowed me to grow a huge respect for the people there.

My heart completely melted when he said he picked the cheapest place because he didn't wanna burden his parents. He seems like someone you could easy be friends with because of how sympathetic he is.

He kind of good person, but the word sympathetic is a bit so sad for him. Lucky for him, he should slowly doing fine, maybe compassionate could be his next grow up
Selfless is the right word. sympathetic means expressing emotion about someone elses situation.
@@tmelks7734 So in the example used, sympathize is correct. He sympathizes with his parents potential stress of being a burden
I'm a college student that lives in a room like from the boy in the video, you can get used to live on the room if you don't mind other things.
You share with both women and men, with about 6 other people, and they get disgustingly dirty
Many students live here to focus solely on studying for their exams. I had my Korean friends told me they lived In a Goshiwon for a short time and they wouldn't wish it on anyone, it's that bad. And I agree. It's depressing. It's claustrophobic, dirty and dark. Most people can only live in them for a few months at a time
yeah... let me smoke in this 60 square area with no ventilation
@@cardboardpackage people literally do and it's grossss
@Maxim Kontsevich not once did I mention the average wage? So how can you know? The minimum wage is about 9$USD an hour and that's a pretty common wage for anybody at entry level or most foreigners.

Hey man that's too bad. If ur still living there I suggest buying an $80 air purifier to fix the smoke and dust part. They are really good.
I suddenly remembered that scene in Reply 1988 which Deoksun visited her sister's dorm (Bora).
It would be so suffocating for someone with claustrophobia ...u worked hard ... all the best to come
Honestly it's mostly about managing your expectations.
Kevin Y you're not getting the point. These places are not livable. The govt allows developers to build these kinds of buildings for massive profit.
But still, this is ten times better than the Hong Kong's cage homes.
