The best way to fight FOMO is being poor.
Very strong.
I usually wait at least two months before I buy something. But it really just works out to having a Christmas list of stuff I want that I slowly move through because 99% of the time I still want the thing two weeks, two months, or two years later.
To anyone still buying Warhammer. May god have mercy on your soul.
I think one overlooked thing when it comes to FOMO in this case is the disproportionately high levels of neurodivergent people in the hobby, which often makes them more vulnerable to aggressive sales tactics. Especially ADHD which is massively prevalent within the Warhammer community
It's funny that crowdfunding projects like Kickstarter tend to be solely a FOMO thing too. Back now or miss out the biggest bargain of your time ! Even if you'll never use all these 100+ miniatures dumped at you.
I still have hundred of miniatures from an old Raging Heroes crowdfunding project in boxes. Sounded like a great deal at the time years ago, but their only purpose so far is to gather dust in my storage room. When I backed it, I wanted to build a full female imperial guard army. The time I got them sent at my home, my projects changed and I ended up with models I suddenly had no interest into. Nowadays, I tend to stay out of Kickstarter and the like...especially if they're physical products.
I love these video titles. Keep 'em coming!
I had been pretty critical in the last few Star Wars related videos, but this one was a good talk.
I have noticed that I have been far happier with the hobby in general by just stepping back and slowing my purchases, and even selling stuff off I know I had purchased likely due to FOMO years ago.
I definitely have found myself unhappy when I’m playing the competitive guys. I don’t want to play at that high a level, but I also want a chance.
I’m probably going to see how I can dial in on the group I want to play and make that happen. I don’t need tons of purchases but I’ll probably be excited for the stuff when my existing army comes back around for a new kit
@@timunderbakke8756 Can always play alternative rulesets with the minis you do have.
Stargrave has a fantastic Solo/Co-op campaign where you are playing against space zombies and trying to survive.
Grimdark Future and Xenos Rampant are very fun games that uses 40k or really any other minis you and your potential opponents have and lets you play relatively casual games with them.
Fomo is toxic, I was really tempted to buy the new blood angels box set.. but then I snapped back into reality and realised I’d be paying £140 ish for 2 models I want and a bunch of rubbish I don’t need. I’ll gladly wait till the full release
It obviously works for them (well that and the lure of the 'deal').
But I always say unless I want all the models in the box it's not really a deal.
While I actually do want all the Blood Angels box, I got around that with other releases by just selling everything I didn't want then keeping the cool mini I did want - so I got Vashtorr for nothing, Angron for £20, and actually paid for some armies by splitting Age of Darkness and Leviathan boxes. Rather than scalping with those big boxes you can sell stuff for way below retail prices and still make a profit.
Well it is a few things. Some stuff comes in a limited box and then is not seen for months or rarely ever. Then there is the "core" w40k player being a 35+ dude , who is either casual (doesn't care about rules, but wants models NOW) or pro (armies have 2-3 month windows , where they are top , so you need to get them fast to enjoy playing the army/build). And then there is more general stuff , which goes beyond GW. People brains not feeling the money spent with digital transactions etc
GW's made to order stuff used to tickle the FOMO response in me but their 4 month wait time has dampened that completely.
I’m bad with money:) My wife though usually fills the holes in the boat🥳
It’s probably both , but to say fomo isn’t messed up wouldn’t be correct either. It’s designed as a psychological tool to prey on customers who find it hard to just say heck no. It’s about the shadiest practice or one of them.
However the more you resist the fomo the less you want to buy long term, so it can be a double edged sword as once you feel left behind you just don’t care about keeping up anymore.
People need to be careful on how much they pull their fomo stuff or else make customers resilient to it and just stop buying much altogether , like myself , I haven’t gotten nearly as much just because of all the fomo crap.
It's definitely both. Corporations create artifical FOMO as a predatory tactic to people with addictive personalities, especially since hobbies like this are actually a crutch for people who are recovering alcoholics, gamblers, etc.
You really make playing with toys sound negative. Your hobby is complaining about toys. It's not that bad. Maby go play outside. Exercise is good for your mental health
@doubletire What turnip truck did you fall off of?
@@doubletire I'm going to guess you genuinely have zero idea what you're talking about. I've seen recovering alcoholics drink hand sanitizer right in front of me and act like it was nothing, these are the kinds of people that can get sucked into a hobby and become just as attached to it as they did with a past vice. I know two people who have had to sell (or felt compelled to do so, at the very least) personal possessions to fuel the FOMO, which I admit is insane but there's a reason GW and big companies do it. They don't give a shit about your home life, they just want your money in any way they can get it.
@@doubletire Your insecurity is beaming through
@@alphabromega859 If my comment upset you then you are the insecure one dude. Cry about toys if you want. To each thier own
Shoutout to the No Money crowd woop woop
The Kill Team season 2 short runs really put me off. To the extent that I didn’t buy anything from season 3 - Bheta Decima. I mean, I wasn’t impressed with the Bheta Decima terrain/setting, but I also wasn’t interested in having to almost buy before I tried.
True for most of us I think.
never have fomo for gw stuff. its just never anything i want. on the other hand ive gone berserk picking up star wars x-wing stuff. i nearly have one of each ship.gotta catch em all luke!
Best way to fight FOMO is to play Battletech.
Related to FOMO is the fear that you will lose out if you get rid of something you are no longer enjoying or using. Have plenty of minis and games that just never took off and they collect dust (some built and some still in boxes). It is hard to let go because there is that similar emotional investment. Some is sunk cost but some is just that fear that as soon as it is gone, you will need or want it.
Thankfully I’m at a point in my life where I can afford to spend on hobbies I love. My wife doesn’t mind me spending on warhammer/paint stuff, because my other hobby is fishing, and that’s $$$$$. There’s not a tackle or boat shop around that doesn’t love seeing me walk in the door.
It’s both - GW does limited releases to drive sales that are higher than they would be. Think about the blood angels box set. How many people would buy everything in the box over time? Most won’t - it’s just “the value” and the ability to get all the products first.
My answer is to wait and say “do I actually want everything in the box” and if the answer is “no”, I don’t try to buy it.
something to consider, there legitimately are people who own zero BAs. So everything in the box is 'new'
@@lordsofwargamesandhobbies3905of the people who do not have any, how many would legitimately buy that many upgrade sprues and that many jump intercessors at one shot? My guess is not that many
@@timunderbakke8756 You would be surprised how many people ask for the frills because they want their models to look extra cool.
Never experienced it until Pariah Nexus. Haven’t been able to get the cards since they were released since they were sold out before they even hit the shelf.
I think the only FOMO dopamine rushes that hit perfectly were launch nights for Halo 2 and Halo 3. Nothing will ever reach that peak
I dont have fomo, but I see others with it. I buy box sets if I want all the models. Otherwise I don't get it. When my favorite faction gets their codex. I don't have a desire for the limited edition cover. If I do get it. It would be because it came in a box set and I wanted every model. Otherwise I'll just get the regular codex.
For me, it’s the books, not so much the models. I feel like I need to buy the books despite having so many still left unread. I’m reading constantly but I just hate having to wait a year for GW to release the paperback. If the book is based on a faction, It doesn’t help that there is something else released to get me itching to read the background
Don't need to watch, I'm bad with money
It's both. That said, don't underestimate how many GW custommers aran't fan of (a specific) system but a fan of the GW ecosystem. That includes all models of all ranges. You could say that buying the 'new/FOMO' stuff is the hobby.
Joakville!
I hate the fact that I experience FOMO while buying dead games on Ebay. Confrontation, AT-43, and even a little bit of Warmachine lol...sigh. Like it's dead...why am I afraid of missing out? (My argument is that because the models are OOP, it actually is a finite limit out there, soooo that deal might be the best deal lol...I hope I'm not the only one in this aspect)
Case in point. I like Slaves to Darkness... Should I get the Abraxia Dawnbringers box? I don't have those models... but I have such a huge backlog... but the price is really good...is that really FOMO though? I think yes because I'm afraid of not getting that deal before it's out-of-stock. Also, I'm convinced John is an alien...
Yea those particular deal boxes are nasty...usually such a good deal they really prey on your FOMO.
Bro just cant help messing with the empty cup of ice in every video.
I haven't even
seen this yet, but my comment is "por que no los dos?"
I think whatever GW is doing is the opposite of fomo. With all the big bocks coming out I don't care about any single one anymore. I own 4 Necromunda Gangs, I play in two campaigns, I didn't get the new necromunda because it was drowned in a sea of other big boxes.
And honestly, these days I feel like I am getting better value from other companies, because the other reason I think GW is doing the opposite of FOMO is that not only does it diminish my interest, but it also kind of diminishes the worth on the table. By the time a normal person has painted up a big box, the models within might already be unplayable bad.
It may not be working on you, but I can tell you that it does work, and it does exist. I see it every week, for the last 20 years. It's probably never been as extreme as it is now.
Never buy more then you can paint. I've said no to models I really wanted that were limited time offers because I knew I had unpainted minis.
I always ask myself:.. when will I actually work on this model lol
Oh, I am definitely bad with money! I enjoy my pile of potential but not so much the debt.
Old world fomo is real, if you miss out on the reference cards for example they will be 2-3 times the price on eBay the next day, they purposely do not print enough
Yes
"fomo" gets really overused it seems like. even a store having a holiday sale is "fomo" in the sense people discuss, because it instills a "sense of urgency" due to the sale not being eternal.
it really boils down to a lack of self-discipline or poor impulse control.
I don’t FOMO GW … I will buy boxes that I think are good value but almost everything else can be found much cheaper in the aftermarket if you are willing to wait a couple of months.
You are stronger than many of us my friend!
A fool and their money are soon parted. One financial view is that people who don't know how to use their money giving it to people who do, is a good thing.
Are the mins the fomo or getting rhe new paint colors when they come out and i feel like it need it...
There is no point *dot*

Think they’re talking about 16:47
People always blame others for their addictions
I was worried that millions of space marine 2 players new to the 40k universe would buy all the limited edition models. Fomo made me complete my primaris collection before the launch of space marine 2. So many lieutenants lol. My fomo is cured for now
I'm in this video and I don't like it 😂
There's a lot of self harm when making these videos lmao
"Just don't buy it" is always the funniest of defenses of a product and corporation. It is right up there with "it is a luxury product...37 cents worth of polystyrene is essentially a yacht."
The “don’t buy it” isn’t just a justification though. It’s also the only way to send a message to a corporation that you do not approve of what they are doing
The target market value for a product isn't necessarily tied to its production cost. Lots of high end clothing costs little more than cheap stuff to make. You are paying for the name and prestige.
Both🫣
I was disappointed when I missed Warhammer Kill zone Rouge Trader, Blackstone Fortress. Kill zone Gallow Dark ect... Then Imperial agents was announced. Then My GW feel bads dismorfia was cured. For now
