About men in suits coming to speak with you, it happened to Tom Clancy after describing the layout of a Naval ship. They wanted to know who leaked such classified information. He was interviewed by the FBI and asked where he got all his information. He then pulled military technical manuals for maintenance (that you can buy anywhere), open sourced technology manuals, and documents sent to him from government tech and manufacturing contractors who design and build the government equipment. He said you’d be surprised what you could get and learn when you just asked for it.
His books also had to be vetted by the three letter agencies because he’d also interviewed ex military and three letter agency agents and used their stories they’d tell each other and others (basic bragging around the table and banter) as research for his books. Just to make sure he didn’t put something in them that he wasn’t supposed to know or be told by someone.

The reason we will never get a full Codex Astartes is that it would have to be written by an actual military genius. The in universe one was written by Gulliman himself, who you must remember is basically a demigod of war and strategy. It would be like Sun Tzu's 'Art of War', but for every conceivable situation that could ever happen to an Ultramarine. It would literally take up a whole Library. It is said in Canon that not even an Ultramarine can memorize the whole thing, but that each battle brother must memorize several chapters so that "Within each Company there exists a complete unwritten record of the entire text".

There is another book, "The Liber Daemonicum," that is possessed by every single Grey Knight. The book is said to be made of wafer thin screens resembling pages.
So, it isn't even the compilation of required knowledge. You would need the technology to craft the medium to store and relay said knowledge.
I imagine the Codex Astartes is written in the same fashion.

Trench foot is caused by lack of dry footwear. Socks and boots should be changed as often as possible and kept dry when not in use. If you get trenchfoot you're supposed to keep it clean and let it dry back out. If left untreated a number of issues from infection to flesh rot and more. You can get it in a desert you can get it in a snow storm you can get it on your hands.

Two things to keep in mind about the Guard's humble Flashlight:
Firstly, it was Big E's second choice for a primary infantry weapon. Mass production, maintenance, and supply of his first choice was not economically viable at the point Big E began launching crusades out into Sol.
Secondly, the Lasgun has been the Guards standard infantry weapon for something on the order of twenty or thirty thousand years. With that length of time in service, the only foes that *would* remain are the Uncontacted, the Freshly Evolved, and the Adapted. Most of what The Imperium (and thus, the Guard) fight falls into that last category.

    • @LAHFaust
      @LAHFaust 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +43

IIRC, the recoil is also artificial because the soldiers who transitioned to the Lasgun were really thrown off by the lack of feedback when firing and felt they lacked umph. So they threw in a weight that slams back when the gun fires.

It is a comfortable pack of lies designed to make the average man believe they can actually win against the like of Tyranids, Orks etc. If the average Guard recruit knew what they were really up against, the comissars would have to shoot half the compliment of every troop ship full of fresh recruits before they even got to the ground."

Hans stopped. The realization hit him like a boulder. In the 45 minutes since they had first met, he finally noticed that glint in her eyes. That touch of craziness.
"The corruption!" Hans whispered to himself softly. He had never seen it before, but he had heard the stories. The horror. What it led to.
He could not let it strike. Not here.
Slowly he unclipped his laz pistol. Pulling it out while she turned away. If he had to be the one to do it, so be it. Before she turned around, he lept forward and delivered Emperor's mercy.

    To Lysander and Koda:
Standardized Necron infantry use the Gauss Flayer as their designated firearm of choice, which fires arcs of green electricity-like energy tendrils in an adjustable cone. Each tendril of electricity, once it makes contact with a target, will cause a certain area around the point of impact to undergo near instant molecular disintegration, as skin, then muscle, the nerves, then bone are stripped away layer by layer. This causes such excruciating pain that some guards lucky enough to only be grazed by the edge of the Gauss Flayer's conical area of effect may still die from the shock of having part of one of their limbs "flayed" into a pile of carbonized organic material. Going off of the description, I'd assume getting hit by a Gauss Flayer's electrical arc is like having someone blow your individual nerve cells up to the size of a person, them rub them down with a rusty cheese graters, and you can feel all of that. However, since the damage is stated to be caused by molecular disassembly, I don't think any wounds caused by a Gauss Flayer would be carterized by the attack, which means the injured party still has to deal with the problem of rapid blood loss due to their impromptu amputation.

16:10 Ah, the propaganda of my fathers day. Which he said did nothing more than to make the young and foolish into the gullible and dead.
He once, very nearly, got kicked out of the USCG due to possessing a copy of The Communist Manifesto. This was back when the Articles of War were a thing.
When asked why he had it, his answer was "to know our enemy" and was told flat out by his commanding officer that was not his job and "they [command] would tell him who the enemy was."
He, and our family, also suffered immensely every time he got a promotion. The US Gov. would send folks to "question" his parents, relatives, and acquaintances to ensure we didn't have any Nazi ties. They did this right up to his retirement where his last promotion was to LCDR. Our family has been in the US since 1868, but they still checked.
He absolutely hated propaganda and rather preferred to study everything on his own and form his own opinions on things.

I want a warp episode and for you to make it clear that we know jack shit about the deep warp following is some excerpts
I'm shamelessly gonna piggy back of this and paste a collection of excerpts that are related to the deep warp.
‘There are layers,’ said Veil, impatiently. ‘Yes, there is stratum aetheris, the shallow ways. There is stratum profundis, the greater arteries, plunging deeper. There is stratum obscurus, the root of the terror. How does this help you? No living man can navigate the deep ways. Even he could not.’
‘But you try to map it.’
‘It could not be done.’ Veil shook his head with frustration. ‘He was wrong about that, at least. It is not a mirror. It moves like a living thing. It is a living thing. Touch it, and it trembles.’ He briefly lost his certainty. ‘I do not have the Eye, but still I have seen things. I have studied what they study. The complexity is… immortal.’
‘Try to explain.’ Yesugei spoke softly. ‘I am fast learner.’
Veil exhaled, his eyes widening. ‘The Seethe is an ocean. All know this - it has currents, it has depths, it has storms. Near the surface, you can see the Cartomancer’s light. You can follow it. You can use your Geller aegis, and you are kept barred from the Intelligences. But even then, you are just below the upper limits. Go deeper and the aegis shatters. The lights go out. The Eye is blinded. When men say that they traverse the warp, they boast, for no mortal does more than skim across eternity’s face, like stones thrown by a child. We do not belong there. It is poison for us, and the deeper in, the worse the poison.’
    'Achelieux try to go deeper?’
Who knows? Maybe. He did not succeed. Do you know why not? Because it is impossible. It takes the power of a tormented sun just to puncture the shallowest shoals. No energy in our arsenal could possibly pierce further. String the reactors of a dozen battleships together, double their potential, and still it would not be enough. So no, he did not succeed.’
Chris Wraight, [Horus Heresy 36 - The Path of Heaven](wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/The_Path_of_Heaven_(Novel))
Note that this is from the perspective of a human at the time when knowledge of the warp was incredibly limited. And even then, he is simply explaining that warp capable craft only enter a shallower warp and that they can not enter the deeper levels which, as readers, we know is where daemons and the gods reside.
The same novel also explicitly states that the Webway exists within the Deep Warp.
He perceived the truth. Both thrones had been made for the same reason - to plumb the deeper ways, to free the species from the nightmare of the shallow warp, to bridge a link across the hidden paths, ones that only xenos had known, and which the Emperor had found some way to access. Dark Glass was the lesser node, the one where the technology had been tested, anchored in the furthest recesses of the void while the Great Crusade scoured its widening path ever further from the home world. In the chaos that had erupted since, the portal had been left behind, lost but not forgotten, neither by its creators nor its opponents in the labyrinthine halls of the Paternova.
Path to Heaven by Chris Wraight
We also know that Tzeentch is located in the same place as the Webway
Along with the Visarch and the Yncarne, Yvraine suddenly found herself adrift - not within the webway, but without. They were stranded in a near-silent limbo, trapped on the top of the psychocrystal walls. The sounds of battle were muffled beneath them, and the cool void sucked in its breath at their backs. Yvraine did not look around, for she felt something there, in the darkness. A voice in her mind said should she do so, she would behold the Changer of the Ways himself, and learn the meaning of madness.
    Gathering Storm: Fracture of Biel-Tan
This is a comment from John French (author of the book Fateweaver) about Kairos and the Well of Eternity
Daemons are not living creatures. Each one of them is a facet of a Dark God’s power and nature. They are semi-independent, but ultimately they are only fragments of a greater whole. The mortal servants of Chaos are also slaves to the Dark Gods, their minds and bodies are twisted by the Warp, but they can still make decisions, hope, dream, and despair. They can plot and betray. That mortal independence, ultimately, is what makes the Gods crave their souls.!
So where does that leave Kairos Fateweaver? Tzeentch wanted to look into the Well of Eternity but would not risk to go himself, so sent one of his Daemons, which is actually part of him… and now Kairos Fateweaver knows more of the future than Tzeentch himself, while existing as part of him. How does that work?!
The answer is that it doesn’t. It makes no sense - because that would mean that Tzeentch both knows all of the future and past and does not. It means that part of him is, in one way, more powerful than the rest of him.
    And that’s fine.
It’s fine because the story of Kairos Fateweaver, and the Well of Eternity, is just that; it is a story told about something mortal minds cannot understand, and can only describe through metaphor. Th**e Well of Eternity is just a name. There is no hole in the middle of a fortress that does not exist that goes down for ever. Tzeentch does not literally listen to his Daemons. All these things are just skins that are pulled over a part of the vast, intangible malevolence of the Warp. The truth really cannot be known.
    How cool is that?

US Army Soldier here. You can look online and find unclassified Soldier Handbooks. I recommend specifically the US Solider’s Blue Book. It’s what we get in basic training.
Btw still very possible to get trench foot. Rain, puddles, and other bodies of water easily stepped in are always a problem along with just being in humid environments. Everyone should know to bring spare socks and boots when they’re in the field. Foot powder is also typically a good call.

  • @Jooru27
    @Jooru27 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

23:34 you absolutely can. Good boots help but the only sure fire way to avoid it is to change ya damn socks. Yes it's a pain in the arse to take you boots off, dry your feet, air them out and put on another pair of socks when all you want to do is sleep and you don't wanna unpack and repack the bag. But change ya damn socks

  • @tylerreed610
    @tylerreed610 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The precursor to trenchfoot is called chillblains, sometimes used interchangeably. If a part of your body is exposed to chill and/or damp conditions for long periods of time you can develope blisters or itchy sores in that area. It also causes lack of oxygenation to the area which, once those sores open up, can lead to increased risk of infection and slow healing.
You can get it for multiple reasons, but the biggest is damp socks and boots. Either because youre in a damp environment or simply just lots of sweat and not changing and drying your socks and boots. Its still a huge risk in almost any environment. This is one of the reasons "change your socks" is kind of a meme in military circles. Also. Change your socks. Always pack more socks than you need and an extra pair of boots if you can spare the room and weight lol.

Hey fellas, recent aussie veteran here.
Trench foot, aka pitted keratolysis plus cold/wet is still very much an issue. The US boots thing is not a thing.
Basically it works the same way as staying in the bath too long in warm environments, where your skin gets too moist and because you're wearing the same socks for who knows how long the bacteria go crazy.
In cold environments it works exactly the same way, but with the addition of reduced circulation in your extremities due to the cold. This basically makes it multiple times worse, as the reduced circulation by itself is enough to do damage (see diabetes foot).
Have fun searching up both diabetes foot and pitted keratolysis 😂

Trench Foot or more accurately "Immersion Foot Syndrome" isn't caused by a bacteria, virus, or fungus, it's caused solely by how water interacts with your skin cells over a prolonged period of time. You know how your hands and feet can get pruny from being in the shower or bath for too long? Thats basically the first stage.
Actually, Orks retreat all the time, they just don't view it as such, hence the quote "Orkses is never defeated in battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!" ~4th ed Ork codex.

10:45 Something like this happened to me. I was posted as the nightshift guard for a very remote warehouse just before the blizzard hit Texas.
Power went out, no communication equipment worked (cell/internet/landline), and no way my Dodge Avenger would make it through snow.
Thankfully, dear, old dad was born in '31 and raised my little brother and I to be absolutely ready for when things went to shit. I may not be a licensed armed security guard but I do keep a hardcase in the trunk with carbine, pistol, ammo, and maintenance stuff. Especially for long 12hr shifts.
So I get the posting, the drive REALLY sucked but was doable, settled in thinking it's not gonna be that bad and...well...yeah.
Thank god I had food and water stashed away in the guard shacks fridge along with the non-perishables in my cars trunk.
Boredom was the real enemy because that shit set in quick. Once communication went out, I assumed someone would be sent me way since it's a very remote post. But that wasn't the case.
The good news was that I clocked an extreme amount of OT and bonus. The bad news was that the client became absolutely furious I had camped out on their property, armed, and tried to have me fired for it. They also claimed I damaged stuff in the warehouse and the bathrooms.
Yep, fun times being along out in the Texas boonies snowed in guarding some morons cars.

45:10 the Lasgun rules because it is a reliable direct energy weapon that has no recoil, can be charged in the field with their power cell magazines, delivers it's energetic payload at near-light speed which makes it harder to track the origin of shots, is versatile in function and relatively simple to modify, can have mounted accesories like lights/bayonets/underbarrel grenade launchers and (on planets with sufficient technological and industrial capacity) scales far better than chemical propellant firearms while being more efficient than railguns in nearly every way. Like any weapon system it has pros and cons(range is a big one for example) but for a galactic empire it is a perfect choice as primary infantry weapon for guardsmen.

To be fair, I do not believe it's designed to lie to the soldiers for the sake of lying. It's the *Uplifting* Primer, it's purpose is, first and foremost, *uplift* the guardsman's spirits.
They already know there's war everywhere, and they will face hard times. They do not need to know *everything* non-human and *about half* of "human" threats are, individually, more lethal than them. Tell them that, and you get less volunteers, less draftees, and a bunch of scared and disgruntled, *trained* troops huddled together on a ship, usually outnumbering the crew...
Lying to them about what they'll face in order to maintain good spirits and discipline is kind of a necesity, at that point...

Love the video, i served in the marines recently as an infantryman, had a bunch of posistions, still have some of the training manuals and would absolutely love to see the similarities with this book, none of it is classified at all cuz most of it is out of date or basic knowledge anyways. keep up the good work

1:10:48 The idea of Freeza and Ruckus both looking at an Eldar and thinking "Woah, easy there buddy" makes me smile to no end.

23:46 Soldiers still get treach foot. Most often during field problems (2 to 21 day training event). It hurts so much speaking from personal experience. Each step you take you feel the bottom of your feet pulling apart.

They don't explain why ignoring the hordes of smaller Tyranid organisms and shooting the big ones is the way to do it, but it is genuinely good advice. Because that larger Tyranid might be a node in the synapse network. Not all of them are, but enough that taking them out (if you can manage it) will confuse the hordes around them. Not sure if this is still the case (the most updated Tyranid codex I've read is 7th edition), but from the very start the Tyranids have had the Shoot the Big Ones rule, specifically allowing enemy forces to fire on the bigger bioforms even when they would normally be forced to fire on other things. Again, not sure about the phrasing (it's in a box somewhere), but that's the gist of it.

I would love to see an episode covering the general weaponry of the Imperium. Lasguns, Plasma Rifles, Meltas, Bolters, etc.

My favorite quote regarding the Lasgun is that The humble Lasgun was strong enough to kill 99% of Hostile aliens, unfortunately they're dealing with the remaining 1%

There is that really cool video titled "Guardsmen Trailer" which is an animation about guard fighting orks in the forest. And I am pretty damn sure that in one moment a guardsman did pull off that "grab attacking ork by the wrist and stab him" maneuver (that one which is in the thumbnail to this video) from the Primer. It worked and looked really cool.
And that made me wonder - is it a possibility that bonkers tips in that book do actually work and work really well, but since everyone thinks it is all loads of BS, nobody would even think to try that out.
