It’s fine if the pain is psychosomatic, otherwise it doesn’t help me. Of course there’s the anti opioid stigma. Some people really do need them and shouldn’t be withheld bc others abuse it. And it’s Fentanyl from China killing people everywhere bc the border is run by cartels.
I definitely agree that there is a mind body connection, but this does not mean that every person with chronic pain can just resolve the issue with a mind approach. I suffer from a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy, which is a degenerative and ultimately terminal genetic disorder that I was born with, and that causes the degeneration of muscle tissue. There is no treatment or cure for it, and all the doctors can do is keep me comfortable. The result of my condition is that I’m wheelchair bound, with a feeding tube, have a tracheostomy and 100% dependent on a ventilator 24/7 in order to breathe, and have to have a surgical procedure done once a month under general anesthesia to keep infections in my tracheostomy under control, and require around the clock care. I am unable to do any PT or exercise, because exercise and things like that actually speed up the degeneration of my condition, because my muscled can’t regenerate when exercised or damaged, and any damage to my muscles is permanent. My condition will only get worse, and anytime I am sick and as my disease progresses it will be harder for me to be comfortable. I am on pain medication, and am in the rare group that has to be on them long term. I have met with many pain psychologists who have told me that they don’t need to see me again, because I have the ability to do biofeedback and calm myself and do mind body work well beyond what they expected. With that being said, I use those mind body techniques in addition to pain medication. The treatment for my condition is palliative and to keep me comfortable. All my doctors, who are experts in their fields have no problem with and are glad that I have access to medication that can help my pain. All of the doctors and nurses that treat me are amazed at the fact that I have such a wonderful attitude and mindset despite having such a devastating diagnosis and disease. I share this because there are some people, like myself, that need pain medication just to be comfortable to do the most basic things.
Dr Sarno was THE pioneer in this. Look up TMS.
