I'm a hip hop head and Gang Starr is my favorite hip hop act. Right from 89 when they dropped No More Mr. Nice Guy. Above the Clouds is a complete hip hop banger and you're right its aged so well. The beat gets so much fanfare, and rightly so, but the lyrics are just as important and delivered impeccably by both Guru and Deck. Deck throws down one of the best guest verses in hip hop history. Its 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
DJ Premier is the GOAT producer. You can devote a whole reaction channel dedicated just to his work over the decades. He's produced for many of the all time great emcees: Nas, Jay-Z, KRS-One, Rakim, Notorious BIG...
Guru passed in 2010, not 2019. In 2019, Gang Starr released a new album called "One of the Best Yet." If you haven't heard it yet, I highly recommend it. Much respect to Preemo for the probably countless hours spent digging, cutting and mixing old material to give us so many verses and hooks from Guru. RIP to a true legend.
Guru spit a top ten verse only to have Deck come in and spit probably the best verse ever.
When deck asked him what was the topic of the song .. guru simply responded by saying “the mental”. The whole song is literally about putting putting the workings of each others mental on paper. One of decks greatest verses and one of the best in the history of hip hop.

It was the mid-to-late 90s in Cape Town. I was a teenager in high school who wasn't working and therefore couldn't afford to buy all the albums I wanted. I would pop the blank tape into the tape deck and wait for the hip-hop shows to come on the radio so I could record some tracks. Above the Clouds is one of those tracks that just takes me back in time to those days. Others are Full Clip (Gangstarr), The Next Movement (The Roots), Nas Is Like (Nas), Time's Up (OC), Electric Relaxation (A Tribe Called Quest), Out For Fame (KRS-One).... I could list so much more
Hidden gem brothas
This song is so good because the lyrics are fast and stylish but there’s no aggression. It’s a smooth ass song. Even. When you hear the Wu in it, it flows.
