    FAQ:
    1. Ted Lasso Season 2 has yet to be watched/filmed but is the next thing in queue after we finish season 2 of Breaking Bad, which is on Patreon.
    2. We filmed these over a year ago when we started the show, so far only Season 1 has been edited. The rest of the seasons are on Patreon, depending on if viewers actually care to watch these videos, we will decide later if we will edit Season 2 and onwards because they are a LOT of work.

      It might be a lot of work, but sadly the lessons from the Wire still seem relevant! What I'd really like to see though is a Q&A/chat about the Wire in it's entirety, but I think we'd need to see your reactions to justify that

      The main reason why this show didn't run aground or get old was because each season focused on a different "power base" or institution of the city, and its relation to law enforcement (the goals & agendas of each as well as the people within them, how they cooperate with and/or interfere with each other). There were the same core characters from season to season, with continuing storylines and character arcs throughout.
      The instititional focuses in season order are: the illegal drug trade, the port system (Baltimore is a main shipping center), the city government and bureaucracy, education and schools, and the newspapers.

      FYI: The actual Baltimore Police chief (commissioner) when The Wire Season 1 was filmed played a detective on the show (Ed Norris). Within a few years, he was convicted of federal corruption and tax charges and went to prison. He wasn't the only police chief to go to prison.

    When the series aired, the actors (including Idris Elba and Michael B. Jordan) were all total unknowns, the creators purposely didn't want recognized actors and star power to detract from the realism of the show. In fact, many of the background extras and minor characters were actual Baltimore police officers, drug kingpins, and city officials, including the mayor of Baltimore who makes a cameo in season 3, and in season 4 a convicted killer re-enacts a drive-by shooting she once committed. This show launched numerous careers.

      I feel as if that actually makes it much more easier to react to, as there's actually a lot to say about it (see LM Reaction's discussions, for example. They pretty much have to cut themselves off else they'd go on for hours.)
      With action heavy stuff...I mean you get to make more shocked faces and go "Whoaaa!!" as a reactor, I guess? But I'd take a reaction with conversational substance over exaggerated expressions any day.

      @@Kadaspala That's the exception, not the rule, unfortunately. Quite often, reactors will talk over scenes, assuming they can't be that important, then end up confused later because they didn't follow the thread. I tried watching the "Sath Reacts" one and it was just an absolute trainwreck by episode 4-- just misunderstanding absolutely every detail. Still very glad people are giving it a chance regardless.

    My favourite thing about watching people watching The Wire for the first time (either on a reaction channel or IRL) is listening to them going on about how good it is from the start and all I can think to myself is "you're right, buuuuut...wait until you meet Omar...wait until you see Freamon in action...wait until you learn that the first series is actually the second worst...wait until you find yourself spontaneously going 'sheeeeeeeeeeeit'...yeah, Prez is an idiot, but wait until he finds himself..."

    • @7rollface
      @7rollface 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@36melodyproduction Difficult to say, honestly. I think 2 & 4 fight it out for top spot. Then 3, then 1, then 5.
      And don't get me wrong, even 5 is brilliant, but it feels a little more far-fetched than previous seasons with the fake serial killer stuff, and the newspaper stuff never really feels fully connected to the rest of the show in the way that previous expansions out into politics, the school system, and even the docks did.
      It's like you could see all the others as being yet another system which trapped people in "the Game", whereas the newspaper always seemed like a truly impartial observer, full of people who just wanted to do good. Even the guy who was making stuff up seemed like more of a distraction than anything else, and he was very much an outlier. Compare and contrast with the cops, almost all of whom - even our heroes - were corrupt, or incompetent in some way and who, in their own way, often contributed to the city's problems as much as they solved them.
      Again, it's still some of the best television ever made, but it was starting to show the strain a little by the end.

    • @36melodyproduction
      @36melodyproduction 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I need to admit to something... I didn't watch season 5. I had heard that it wasn't as good and the end of season 5 wrecked me. I didn't want to endure the kid's descent into drug addiction and the "return" of McNulty.
      For me it would be 4; 1; 2; 3; the third is a bit less focused in my opinion, so while it was still incredible i felt less invested in the overarching narrative. Also i thougt Avon became a whole lot less menacing for no reason. Anyway thanks for sharing !

  •  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    The recidivism rate for AA/NA is over 90% and that's according to some of their oen internal figures as well as scientific data. That's about the same as quitting "cold turkey" so calling NA/AA meetings drug treatment is massive stretch at the very least because it's not raising the chances of success at all and it's likely contributing to the record number of overdoses because society at large thinks that AA/NA is actually treatment and they aren't aware of actual treatment options. In the US, they force people to go through the courts.
    What's really fucked up though is they did a scientific study that showed that addicts who completed a supposed drug treatment program like NA were actually MORE LIKELY to overdose than the people who dropped out. That same study says you are almost 30 times more likely to overdose after a sustained period of abstinence because your tolerance pretty quickly resets so even if they think they are being cautious and taking half of the amount they used to that's now enough to stop your breathing especially if you mix opioids with other narcotics or alcohol.
    Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can work on some addictive behaviors, but studies show that it doesn't really improve outcomes very much for addiction to drugs like opioids and amphetamines which are obviously the biggest problems. The only available treatment option that has an even moderate success rate for opioid addiction is called Medication Assisted Therapy where you take a substitute opioid medication like buprenorphine/Suboxone that doesn't get you high, but keeps you from going through withdrawals and blocks the opiates like morphine/heroin from reaching endorphin receptors in the brain. Works 30-60% of the time, but most people need to stay on the substitution drugs either for several years or even life. That's not ideal, but it's better than anything other treatment option available by far and is obviously much better than living your daily life as an addict with a very high likelihood of accidental death especially now that fentanyl is everywhere. When The Wire was made fentanyl existed, but it wasn't a street drug and wasn't used to cut drugs either.

    • @jessharvell1022
      @jessharvell1022 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      as a guy in recovery (for booze and uppers not opioids and not in any sort of program any longer, just hacking it out day to day) i can anecdotally agree that recidivism is insanely high in programs like NA/AA and even government-funded recovery clinics with doctors, therapists etc. part of the reason i think is simply that you're constantly surrounded by other addicts and talking about addiction. for some people this is helpful, like any kind of talk therapy, and for others it just keeps them mired in their old life, albeit without the part that (for a time) made all the shitty and gross parts worthwhile. i was in recovery/therapy for a while, and talking about it one-on-one with a therapist was helpful (the vast majority of addicts have a lot of pre-existing mental and emotional and cultural turmoil they're trying to pave over with the drugs), but being in that addiction world eventually got too oppressive. (almost four years clean now but it really is one day at a time.) also with my (limited) experience with AA/NA meetings, there was often a kind of...boastfulness about people sharing their stories, even if they were describing the worst experiences of their lives. a lot of people kind of miss the thrill and chaos of the addict's life and they get to relive it every time they share. anyway this is not to dismiss anyone who's gotten and stayed clean in these ways, and it's all personal observation like I said and totally subjective and non-scientific, but just added to back up the idea that drug treatment (and "treatment") in the US is often wildly inadequate in a lot of cases.

    Soooo glad to see you guys reacting to this. Best show of all time. Opens up more and more as it goes on, and presents one of the most detailed and fleshed out stories in American television. It was written by a group of authors as opposed to screen writers, could have something to do with it.

    Thank you! I've been optimistically hoping you'd edit this reaction into a highlights format for a long time now. I do intend to use your full length reaction the next time I rewatch The Wire, but it's a major time investment and not something I can just squeeze in at anytime. For this reason I usually prefer the edited TH-cam reactions to the full ones. 👍

    jonny's 'green' in the world of the street life. The metaphor is almost definitely related to plants or trees, so brown is an appropriate colour to suggest for maturity. They're doing heroin, which is brown (as in the song "golden brown, texture like sun"). The convergence of the two facts is what makes it worthy of comment from jonny's point of view.

    DOB is Date Of Birth...When Bubs calls him green, and says he gonna make him brown, green means a newbie, brown is like a veteran of the street/heroin game (cause most of heroin is brown). These aren't official terms or nothing, just explaining what Bubs and him meant.

    One of the best TV series made, and very personal to me as it's where my Dad's family are from in Balmer Merlin. That city scared the piss out of me as a kid when we'd see relatives. It takes place during the crack epidemic and I can confirm it was that bad and worse. the writer was a beat cop and he pulls no punches on all sides as to how bad the corruption was. This show is legit.

    I don't remember where I heard this but apparently Idris did his whole interview with his Baltimore accent, not just the audition, and he was afraid that if he told them he was English they wouldn't let him on the show. By the time he admitted it to the showrunners they were so impressed that he was convincing enough to fool them that they wanted him on even more.

    Once you’ve gone through all the seasons of the wire and realize there’s no more to be watched, remember, you can always watch the several seasons of the TV series, homicide life on the streets, which was based off the same source material, and has many of the same people behind the production. I think of homicide life in the streets as the intro to the wire. When homicide was on TV it was one of my few must watch TV shows heck I bought a VCR so I could tape it so I would never miss an episode you’ll see the same actors appearing in roles in both shows.
