    Guru was a bit older than his peers, he was 37 when this came out and I think it shows..he was always a bit wiser than those teenagers he was competing with.
    You may be only getting requests for their later albums but there's definitely some good stuff on their early releases...No More Mr. Nice Guy was a bit raw but everything after that was high quality...and that doesn't even include non-album tracks like the classic "Jazz Thing" which was one of the reasons jazz rap became such a big trend.

    • @ABoomerReacts
      @ABoomerReacts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      From the second album, I have requests for Step in the Arena, Just to get a Rep, and Check the Technique. Thoughts?

    • @uamini
      @uamini 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ABoomerReacts Just To Get A Rep was a single and brings back a lot of fond memories from that era..the video version had an extra verse if I recall correctly. I like Check The Technique a lot, Step In The Arena is okay too.
      Do you have Dwyck on your list? It's not from the early albums but it's as essential as it gets plus it's a good introduction into Nice & Smooth, another group from that era.
      And to get a complete picture of Gangstarr's legacy it would be important to listen to a couple of affiliated acts, namely Jeru The Damaja's "Come Clean" and Group Home's "Supa Star". It can be argued that some of his best work wasn't for Guru but for those artists that made up the Gangstarr Foundation collective.

      "At times I feel like my back's against the wall. And if y'all ain't with me then it's me against y'all. I stand my ground that's what I was taught. While others stand around I hold it down like a fort."
      These lyrics really resonated with me especially during the pandemic. I'm not getting a vaccine and when I didn't want to wear a mask I was one of maybe three people I know that refused to comply with something I knew wasn't right. But it certainly pit me against friends and family, also co workers. I'm not trying to start any covid arguments but this is why these lyrics hit hard last year.

    It is a bit late in their discography but I have to say Moment of Truth is their quintessential album. Not a knock on any of the others, it's just stacked with bangers.
    If you enjoy Guru, I have to recommend Masta Ace. You had Crooklyn up in a poll, which he's in, but I don't think it won. He had some decent early radio singles _(INC Ride, Born to Roll)_ in the 90s but Disposable Arts and A Long Hot Summer are truly amazing albums. *He's also one of Eminem's influences as far as rhyme structure.* Maybe _Beautiful_ or _Good Ol Love_ as an introduction. He might not win any polls, but he's a legend. Also somewhat monotone, East Coast (Brooklyn), easy to follow, drops gems.

    you're the man for doing this one! sometimes you get a poll and end up with the most popular kinda club song from an artist, but the polls will never send you to the most thoughtful deep stuff, the mainstream track will always win the poll. like with de la obviously you need to hear 3 ft high etc, but songs like trying peoples will never make the poll, and its a tragedy for someone so intelligent and interested in lyrics to miss those ones.
