@@josephpeck8723 It's unwise to make Joakim that angry. I wonder how long this journalist tried? Joakim certainly doesn't get "very angry" that easily. But on the other hand: when his and the whole band's integrity is put at question...

I mean from what he said it sounds like it's the deep association in Sweden between Neo-Nazis and Carolus Rex (the person, not the song/album) that unnerved people, and some didn't care to dig deeper. This is something going back nearly 100 years, in the 1930's Swedish Nazis kinda claimed him and it's stuck since. Not that the song was accused of being fascist, but that because it was about someone so deeply tied to Swedish fascism people made assumptions. It's a uniquely Swedish association to have it seems.

If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

@@_aullik Should be put into context that before Sabaton, the only rock groups that had made songs about Hitler and Karl XII were nazi- or ultranationalist bands, so while it doesn't justify the actions of that journalist, it does sort of explain his mistake.

Great episode. I'm always exciting for more stuff covering the Great Northern War, since it often gets overshadowed by the War of Spanish Succession (at least, when it comes to North American history). I loved the episodes covering Fraustadt, Poltava, and the death of Charles XII, so I'm hoping for more episodes covering the larger events of the war chronologically (instead of just those specifics battles/events that are sometimes years apart). Maybe for Carolus Rex Pt. 2?
Awesome episode!!! Funny how uninformed people who probably didn't even listen to the album or even slightly research the topics try to come at you and scold you but you put them in their place! Good on you guys ❤ keep up the great job
I had no idea about all the controversy! That song is one of my favorites! I've learned so much history following this band and these videos. Thank you for the knowledge and the music!
One thing I have to share with you: I am Mexican, my son is as well Mexican and both of us speak Spanish as first language, but when it comes to your songs in Swedish, he sings them in a nice try of Swedish rather than English (a very more common language for us)... gotta love you guys, always make us learn history along with good music and even language classes! ¡Un abrazo! =D
Heck yeah! Carolus Rex is one of my favorite Sabaton songs, it's nice to know more about him. I remember the first time I listened to Carolus Rex and absolutely jammed out, it's so awesome! Hope y'all have a nice day!
I just wanna thank you guys for making these songs and Indy for explaining the history behind them. In my country, they don't even mention Sweden and the Thirty Years War took up about 10 minutes of class. So to find all these things out through awesome metal songs is really cool. Keep up the good work
When I got this song on Apple Music, I got the Swedish version didn’t ever remove it. This is my first time in about 6 months hearing it in English. It felt so weird listening to it.
I've been working so much lately, I've forgotten to watch all your newest videos ☹️ There's something seriously wrong with me. But when I saw that today's episode is about Carolus Rex, I knew I had to watch it asap. This, in Swedish, is my power song and I always listen to it first when I start my car. And as a theologian, I've been wondering whether or not Carolus was as fanatic about the divinity of the source of his power, as portrayed in the songs, but apparently he was... Great episode, thank you! ❤️
@ Metalhead Mom The "Carolus Rex" album is what actually got me looking into the Swedish Empire. (Also, if I remeber right, most absolute monarchs of the time used the Divine right of Kings argument.)
@@josephpeck8723 Yes, you're right, they USED it to gain authority and to appear righteous rulers for the common man. But did many of them ACTUALLY believe they were chosen/anointed kings by God, is another question. Carolus' time was soon to be the time of Enlightenment, and some of the ideas were probably already present in the mindset of the educated elite. So, like I said, I had wondered whether or not the "boy-king" was as certain of his divine right as portrayed in the songs, but seems like he really believed in it.
Carolus Rex is my favorite Sabaton album, and I was super shocked and excited to hear Lion from the North & Carolus Rex played at Sabaton's recent concert in NYC! Definitely wasn't expecting that in the setlist but it made a great day even better!
I discovered Sabaton during Covid, and listen to nearly all their songs (I'm still discovering new ones everyday tough ...). Carolus Rex is one of the first I listened (the first was Last stand), and still my favorite one (especially in Swedish, I kinda have the feeling that's it is the original song, it feels more powerful, the lyrics plays better with the music ...). I didn't knew the swedish history, before listening to you guys. Now I'm reading books and article by the hundreds because that history is trully fascinating. And this song, and the history of Charles XII did a lot in that way. It's only when I watched this video that I learned that Charles is a fascist and a nazi symbol in Sweden. Well I wanted to tell to you : you did well. Because everywhere, in every country, Fascist and Nazi take characters of the local national history, and turn their history and their deeds into their fantasy, and their symbols. They try to do the same thing with Joan of Arc in France (Yes I'm french, pardon my french), and I'm pretty sure they do the same everywhere. By making an album about Carolus Rex, and a song about him, I hope that you did something in order to allow him back to his original place in History. Because that's only when we give up on the past that other may transform it and tell whatever they want about it. Congrats Sabaton ! Keep up with the good work ! (And by the way, doesn't Joan deserve a song ? "The girl on fire" or something like that ...)
when I played Empire: Total War as the British Empire, while I was busy fighting the French and the Spanish to gain control over North-America, out of nowhere the Sweeds occupied Boston and invaded the continent. I thought that was amazing.

I've been waiting for this video! I've been so curious about this subject and its hard to find videos discussing this as in-depth as you guys thank you so much for all your hard work!
Great shirt Indy! Totally outclasses the infamous "Puffy Shirt" from Seinfeld Season 5. Good for the Guys in Sabaton for not caving in on the content they cover due to some dubious modern interpretations of historical events. That unprepared journalist sounds like the kind of guy that who would try to paint Mel Brooks as a Nazi (despite colossal and painfully obvious evidence to the contrary) because he wrote the song "Springtime for Hitler" for "The Producers."
I don't blame them though, in terms of making a album that is specifically Swedish history. Me as an American who loves his country, I know I would do the same for the U.S. if I made music. And only if said interview was published, would get a good kick out of seeing Joakim going off on that journalist.
I can't help but feel that those that lambast media as being 'enabling' of certain ideologies and agendas are simply betraying how easily influenced they are. If a historical album is enough to convert people into monster...what about the likes of rap that glorifies gang violence and crime? And of course, you can take this across mediums - movies, books, tv, and the ever-popular punching bag of popular culture in Video Games. If you argue that its impossible to separate fiction and reality, or in this case history and revisionism, then you are admitting that you yourself cannot see the differences. History is a precious, somber lesson to us - those that seek to forbid it are rarely interested in learning why.
I'd add news media itself to that list. They're effectively taking "if it bleeds it leads" to the extreme of spraying fake blood all over a crime scene to boost ratings without caring about the evidence they're destroying to do so.
@Jeremiah Kivi As a fellow American, I am comfortable saying that it seems as if many people in America have abandoned reason for madness. I hope you are ok.

Joakim is beyond cool and whilst I have no doubt that he's a patriotic Swede ( there's a live video of Lion from the North where he takes a Swedish flag from a pair of young ladies in the audience and drapes it around himself), the idea that he's a closet neo-nazi would be alien to anyone who's ever listened to Sabaton. I mean these are the guys who sing about Heroic Germans, Poles, Greeks, Brits, and yanks. Who highlighted the role of Maori's in the trenches of France and the union of nations that took the slopes of St Benedict. I just want a time machine so I can be a fly on the wall in that interview ............ a pity that it was never published :) Seriously though Sabaton are great educators, great role models and most importantly ......... bloody good musicians
The guys who wrote a song about American soldiers, German defectors, and French political prisoners banding together to defend a Medieval castle from the SS!
The irony of a king having "mort au roi", "death to the king", tatooed on his chest. And unfortunately for him everyone in his palace could understand that since french rightfully was the language of nobility.

@@_aullik Should be put into context that before Sabaton, the only rock groups that had made songs about Hitler and Karl XII were nazi- or ultranationalist bands, so while it doesn't justify the actions of that journalist, it does sort of explain his mistake.
Lol. Journalist: grumbly, whiney noises.
Joachim: "eat history and get wrecked"
XD
Joakim really pull out "So, you've chosen death?" So hard that the interview couldn't be released
For 1 year have I’ll been waiting for this video, finally my time has come
Next episode you record should be “camouflage.” Even though it is a cover it would still be an amazing story.
That and In the Army
Who did the original?
Stan Ridgway, but his was more of him talking over music.
@@owenlunt4425 I just listened to the original. You weren't kidding. I think I prefer Joakim version.
@Sabaton History: who are you, dude? Are you like the bands' historical muse or something? Your dress, presence, speech, breathing, timing, delivery, cadence, honesty, knowledge; all are impeccable. For a minute there, I thought I was all alone down here. You sir, are a genuine bard...
Sabaton and Sabaton history are legitimately one of the best things to happen in my life
“Actually two.” You forgot the main line. “Two amazing albums.”
Lyssna to Carolus Rex, it's a good album.
Uneducated journalist: throws accusations at Sabaton
Joakim: so you have chosen death
Carolus Rex when he finally his episode of sabaton history: My time has come
As one who has been on a signing session with you guys I agree on the scary part. Seeing you angry would be a pretty terrifying experience.
And also a heap of applause for taking back our history from the folks who want to use it in modern day politics for their own agenda. The history is ours to learn from and enjoy not for journalists and extremists to exploit .
Neo-Nazis: We have chosen Carolus Rex to represent us!
Me: *Trying to do the math in my head*....were actual Nazis not good enough anymore?
Well, we swedes dont really have any famous nazis.
Well there’s the founder of IKEA who was part of a Nazi organization while paradoxically being best friends with a Jew who escaped Germany.
yeah, funny things is that Monarchists and fascists hate each other lol
Well in Germany the swastika and the Hitler salute are outlawed so they are probably trying to work out around that. Just my theory.
@@alexamerling79 yeah cuz communists now rule Germany
I was listening to this on the background. I alt tabbed in to see Indy in full regalia. I couldn't help but snicker in approval. Keep up the great work
Great episode. 2?
A journalist not knowing what they're talking about is the most 2023 thing I've heard today.
What I wouldn’t give to have been a fly on the wall during that “interview”.
It's unfortunate how some people get so triggered by history.
Gotta love the fact that the most political episode is literally about rejecting stupid politics pushed on people.
I love this channel
Me too bro
Sabaton ready to fight so historical stories can be told no matter what people attach different meanings to it now and I’m here for it
Journalist: I don't need to know anything about history to put Sabaton on the spot!
Joakim: I'm about to end this man's whole career.
¡Un abrazo! =D
Thanks Asenath, we're glad you enjoy our work!
Indy has really outdone himself this episode with his outfit.
Heck yeah! Carolus Rex is one of my favorite Sabaton songs, it's nice to know more about him. I remember the first time I listened to Carolus Rex and absolutely jammed out, it's so awesome! Hope y'all have a nice day!
The Swedish version is so good that I have it memorized despite not knowing Swedish.
The one takeaway I got from this video:
Never poke Joakim with a stick, unless you want to invoke the ire of Sweden’s greatest warrior.
I just used to listen to Sabaton, I didn't know how much research went into their songs. Huge fan, thanks
Thanks for appreciating it 🙂 Keep rockin'!
The idea that a song about a Swedish king from the 17th century has anything to do with Nazis is utter nonsense
Nah, there is pretext for it, swedish nazis often make use of this era of history to promote their insanity
Guys you are the best. Tack så mycket! Kreativ framgång!
Welcome back
@ Metalhead Mom The "Carolus Rex" album is what actually got me looking into the Swedish Empire.
That would actually be cool. Not for politics or some weird feminist shit. But historically that would be cool.
Im very happy to you tell this story. My ancestor fought in the battle of Narva and was reported MIA after the battle of Poltava.
I love how Sabaton takes the historical facts even from both sides as long as it is possible and try to translate it songs
when I played Empire: Total War as the British Empire, while I was busy fighting the French and the Spanish to gain control over North-America, out of nowhere the Sweeds occupied Boston and invaded the continent.
I thought that was amazing.
Similar thing happened to me in Eu4. Sweden got a PU over Britain and Russia, took Britain's colonies, and steamrolled through Europe. Britain eventually broke free with Ottoman help but holy fuck dude.
i love playing as sweden in empire total war- funniest shit that happened to me is when i got pwned by a maratha armada. just appeared out of nowhere on the danish straights full of legions of advanced indian units. I just rage quitted x'D.
What'd be even more amazing is if the game started playing Carolus Rex at that moment.
@@brigidtheirish let's just say it was the first song that came to mind when I saw what was happening
@@TheExecutorr I bet!
Next time, do Ruina Imperii.
I think its awesome.
Not only one of the best Sabaton songs, but one of my favorite metal songs.
Some Journalist: I'm gonna brand Sabaton as Nazis
Joakim: I'm about to end this man's whole career
Carolus Rex is my favorite sabaton song. It was awsome to see it played live in Dallas.
Finally! Now i just have to wait for The Lion from the North.
This is what I've been waiting for Thanks Sabaton. Goosebumps all over me!🤟
King Charles XII was the latest king that was fighting in the frontline of an empire, that's why he's the latest true warrior king. To bad so few knows about him
love the part on the inquiry on part and how joakim destroyed that journalist..haha thank you guys for doing the best album of the decade for me personally and it was two.. kudos!
Notification squad reporting as ordered to SEE CAROLUS RISE
I've been waiting for this video!
Carolus Rex is such a good song. Both of them.
Lets Just take a moment to admire Indy's outfit 👍
I've been waiting for this video! I've been so curious about this subject and its hard to find videos discussing this as in-depth as you guys thank you so much for all your hard work!
We appreciate your support Kaleo. We're glad you enjoy our content.
“Hear my orders, question me and die”
Kaarrrllll, that kills people!
Carolus Rex: **looking down at Neo nazis from heaven** pathetic.
@CJED No, it isn't, that's just ignorant.
Also, this song isn't even about nationalism, it's about the epic achievements of one guy
My best friend at the time introduced me to Sabaton through this track. It's still my favorite. :)
Glad you like it!
I don't blame them though, in terms of making a album that is specifically Swedish history. Me as an American who loves his country, I know I would do the same for the U.S. if I made music.
And only if said interview was published, would get a good kick out of seeing Joakim going off on that journalist.
I am a history buff. I love these videos. Keep up the great work, can't wait for the next one.
@@josephpeck8723 Also as a fellow American (the username refers to my ethnicity), same. And the news media has been like that most of my life. You'd think BIll Clinton was the Second Coming of Christ the way the media kissed his ass.
This video deserves an update in light of the Helsinki and Oulu universities findings about Charles XII of Sweden.
One of my favorite Sabaton songs... Even if it's about a king that made chaos in my country ;)
YES! My favorite Sabaton song!
Indy: He was the king who inspired an album!
Pär: Actually two
Indy's mind: Dreams are seldom shattered by a bullet in the dark
Rulers come and rulers go, will our kingdom fall apart?
Pär's mind: Hear my orders.. Question me and die, what I say was said in heaven and so it shall be done
Indy: He was the king who inspired TWO ALBUMS!
Pär: Carolus Rex
Good episode fellows. Great album. Thanks for putting them on TH-cam. I plan on buying your albums once I am more financially stable.
Sabaton History: Carolus Rex Svenska please!!!!
You released my favorite song on my cake day, well done:)
I just want a time machine so I can be a fly on the wall in that interview ............ a pity that it was never published :)
Seriously though Sabaton are great educators, great role models and most importantly ......... bloody good musicians
The guys who wrote a song about American soldiers, German defectors, and French political prisoners banding together to defend a Medieval castle from the SS!
The inclusion of the history behind each song is awesome.
No one:
Absolutely no one:
Russia, Poland and Denmark saxony:
We have you 4to1
Sweden: I like those odds
Swedish Pagans in Valhalla: *Pride.*
Sweden lost though, and the once great army was totally decimated.
But I must say, lasting 21 years against those odds is mighty impressive.
I am so happy you finally did this episode! It looks like you left a lot of space to do a part II as well. Now I hope you will do Ruina Imperii soon.
Is there a video of the interview? I want to see this journalist getting a WWE Smackdown
I doubt you are the only one who wants to see this.
tbh Carolus Rex is one of my favorite albums
Great to hear that!
Please do a series about Napoleonic wars and the consequence of the Bernadotte house becoming the actual royal House of Sweden.
they have to write a song first though :(
The irony of a king having "mort au roi", "death to the king", tatooed on his chest.
And unfortunately for him everyone in his palace could understand that since french rightfully was the language of nobility.
And this history channel is just right! Only facts and good music, and humour. Carolus IX founded our City. thank you.
Thank you for appreciating it!
Not only are Sabaton not Nazi's, they are specifically anti-nazi if Rise of Evil or the Final Solution have anything to say about it
I'm so glad they did this album, it was my favorite. I hope to see you guys in April in Krakow for your tour!
It is so funny how Joakim destroyed that journalist's bs claims.
