There has been a debate on which is better for a long time between the two groups and I want to take a moment to maybe give you a different perspective on the whole argument.
I'm union, IW Local 786 that means that I get a better deal with pension, benefits, free and even paid training through the hall and we don't have to go out looking for a job. Now that being sad union or non-union doesn't affect who's the better welder, that's up to the individual and who wants to put the time in to perfecting their skill set and bettering themselves.
I'm a union pipefitter/ welder and also instruct welding at the union hall, I agree with you 100%, union or non union we are all welders, some of the best welders I know have been union and some of the best welders I know have been non union, its the individual that puts in the most time that separates themselves from others, its not what u do in the 8 or 10 hours at work, its the time you put in after work that will make you better. Its nice to hear someone with good sense. KEEP IT UP.

i am abit bias but IMO union has treated me very good thus far in my career. I was takien into my local union as a journeyman welder at 17 with the full rate. the wage is amzing for a young person, All my training is paid for, benefits are great, dont have to worry about what my next job will be, and the people ive met have been very helpful in teaching wisdom and knowledge about the trade. ( i have never worked non-union as a welder) . i have alot of opportunities in my career so far with the UA. ive traveled abit to work and i learned carbon, stainless, chrome, tig and stick and ive also got my downhand tickets aswell. being 21 years old now i am excited to see what welding has instore for me. i am flirting with the idea of building my own rig, what do you think? love the vids man im gunna watch evreryone haha.
It's both good and bad. It's good for those who benefit and it's bad for those who suffer because of it. It's life in the big city. Thankfully for myself, very selfishly, I've already lived more years than I have years left to live and thank God for that! I'm pushing 60 and literally broke my back working hard. I liked working hard and I miss it, but i wouldn't suggest it as a smart way to live!😉 Make your money the old fashioned, American way..... steal it!😂😂😂😂
From my experience... Yeah on paper ,union workers earn more, but once the job site is finished, and if the contractor you happen to be working for can't keep you on the payroll ... You go back to the dispatch hall , you sit out if work for a bit.

@@Hardstyler981 right on ... Well union route is awesome because they will teach you your trade from scratch, absolutely no experience, it is 5 years of night school though. The dispatch hall is where the building contactors submit their work orders to, and those are distributed to apprentices/ journey men waiting to pick up work , these are guys/gals on the "out of work list" . From the dispatch hall, you pick up your work order, then get dispatched to the job site where you will report for work until the job is complete or when you, with your particular skill are no longer required. At that time your foreman will give you your last check , on paper. And you go back to the dispatch hall to wait for another work order. It's called a "layoff", different from being "fired". You get fired if you truly F--k up... ( Being late all the time, making numerous mistakes costing time and $) you will know when you are fired, you will be given multiple warnings. Problem I've noticed is that work crews are very "cliquish " and people talk behind others' backs. There is racism, sexism, nepotism, ( these incidents are rare, but they happen) and if you aren't liked for whatever reason, you'll prob. Get a layoff. Another thing is .... These yearly $ amounts you see include a crap load of overtime... You'll be working many weekends and 12 hr shifts to make that in a year. From my perspective, I've worked in a few non-union construction outfits and they are awesome! America was built on small business and work standards have improved dramatically in recent decades . I don't think you're gonna find a non-union outfit that won't offer the same benefits as Union in modern USA .

Projects will take on union workers (universities, hospitals, refineries, military bases.. as well as luxury high-rise condos/apartments since they are bought mostly by Chinese investors in bed with the DNC). Yet... It's kind of an unspoken rule that you just have to vote Dem because they are supposed to keep us employed, yet no blue-collar worker, or anyone who has get on the freeways for work agrees with DNC policies.

I will say this. I used to be a union electrician and I spent most days getting shit on. I got hurt on the job (fell into a hole that wasn’t marked that was over a hill we regularly walked to the cafeteria) and was shit on for getting checked out/medical attention. I had 1 guy who spent the time to teach me things and help me learn but he was going through a divorce that was effecting him badly. He was ridiculed and harassed so much for being in love with someone and not wanting to lose his wife because we worked with “MEN” and he had to be a “MAN” about it and all I ever heard was these guys mess with him and tell him how pathetic he was being and how many marriages these other guys had been through and to let her go that he ended up killing himself. We got a call from his wife saying he killed himself at the front door so she would find him (according to the note she found). We went to the funeral and immediately after walking out the guys started badmouthing him again. I was so unbelievably disgusted I left my local and never looked back. I’m looking to join a different trade or even get into IT but fuck me if the locals are just gonna be like the electrical union I’d rather stay out. I’m not weak or soft but I can’t be around people who are so unbelievably toxic. Also the way I was treated for being green and like he said in the video being told “well I wasn’t ever properly trained” well then what the fuck? How am I supposed to do anything right or learn anything? Just because someone decided to treat you like shit shouldn’t make you want to treat the next guy like that. I did nothing to you to deserve just being left to my own devices like that. Was such a bad experience working as an electrician. I will say though my foreman was the best guy I ever worked with. He understood why I was leaving he said he understood and that honestly the guys he was in charge of was making him consider retiring that year. But man the moment he found out my truck fell apart and I was spending most of my checks to get to work through rentals he put a down payment on a new suv for me and told me to make sure I made it to work on time. I paid him back before I left and said my farewells. I will never forget that man and his generosity. If the guys were more willing to teach and help someone grow I would have stuck around but I just never felt so alone in a place where all I had heard leading up to that point was how everyone was a family and got no kind of family feeling. Anyway I’m rambling but like I said I may check out the welders union. I’ve always wanted to do underwater welding so who knows.

Kyle G It really depends on where you live and if you’re in a union or not. I’m a member of Local 537 in Boston and the journeymen make over $100K a year with no OT. If you’re a welder though it’s a totally different ballgame!
while I am in different industry, my parents were Union, 30 + years, & I am Union, I also been in the Union over 30 years, & I am a Shop Steward in my location, when I say I have seen it all, I nearly have, I have seen he good, the bad, the ugly, & the greatness. I have seen corrupt officials, & I have seen reps go to jail fighting for employee rights against Tyrant bosses, & companies. once I get my foot in door in welding industry, I will be joining a Union. its about the pay, the benefits, insurance, retirement & why would you not want to have those 4? I don't get the arguments for people wanting to work for lower wages, without benefits, but that is what makes this country great, they have a right to do what they want to do, but I also don't want to hear sob story when older & have nothing, no insurance, no retirement. as for how to treat people, live like I do, this is the code I live by 100%, I can be your best friend, OR your worst enemy, YOU make the decision & I will roll with it. so treat me good you will be treated good. treat me like your best friend, & you will be treated like my best friend, treat me like crap & you will hate me, as I will show you no respect, & its very rare for people to treat me bad, unless they judge me without knowing me based on my looks

To hear you guys talk about it, sounds like " Yeah, I think I'll go down to the hall and pick me up a card, go get some lunch and I'll live happily ever after!" Nothing like that here in the Tri-state area and New England! How do you get in the apprenticeship program where you are?
It's not easy to get in where I went through my apprenticeship. You have to find a local hall near you, then you have to put in an application. If your application is favorable you then go through interviews to get accepted into the program. Out of my class nearly 300 applied and I believe 50 got interviewed and only 22 were selected. Once you get accepted then you have to keep up your grades and your work ethic to complete the program and become a Journeyman. If either lack in any way you are removed from the apprenticeship. My trade has a 50% turn out rate so after 5 years, half of our class was left and became Journeyman. How do you get into the apprenticeship program where you are?
Dude your videos are awesome great stuff I’m definitely a fan I’m trying to go union but I’m in the Chicagoland area and the only pipefitting union is extremely competitive so I was thinking trying iron workers if that doesn’t work out my question is you personally would you go into iron workers or sheet metal workers? I work for the pipefitters union journeyman make 50$ and after taxes and dues checks only come out to 1200-1400$ take home on a 40 hour week, I got a buddy that makes less then 40$ a hour and takes home 1300$ a week in 40 hours take home with optional o.t and good benefits as a mechanic/welder for a mill. I’ve been kind of debating if I should say screw construction along with the politics and drive time leave the union to join that job with my buddy Wich is close to home maybe 2 miles away with plenty of job security or stay in the union all because of my pension. Any honest thoughts or advice ?
Just have to think about your retirement benefits, medical and pension when you retire, if that non union company can put those retirement benefits in writing for you then all means go non union close to your home
Boilermakers is a good union to be in, they did things right a long time ago and had it worked out so their members can work all over North America without all kinds of special permits and visas.

Thanks for the info brother. I recently finished a welding course at my local trade school and applied for local 433 in (Los Angeles) apprenticeship program. It’s been about 2 months since I applied and I haven’t been chosen. They need us to get a sponsor from an eligible contractor but all the numbers I’ve called ain’t hiring. Anyone here have advice on what to do? Thanks in advance
It matters because you are treated better in a union. I knew a dude that was 23 work for my crappy factory job was there for 2 months then left joined union making 89 bucks an hour. I told him nice job that's better for you. He told me I was the only one who was happy for him.
Well my days of wanting and trying are behind me (I'm too old now) but years ago when I had my best chance of admission you had to have a hook or a rabbi as we say here. A member in good standing like your dad or Uncle or your dad's best friend to get you through the door then it was up to you ultimately. Depending on your rabbi's pull, it could really tip the scale in your favor. But along the way since then, certain groups of people have been getting preferential treatment and free training to make the world a more diverse and equitable place! In other words, in NY, if you have nothing you get Sect.8 housing money, food stamps,health care and not only free training but you get paid a regular pay check to go. Then if you complete the training you can apply for the union. Of course the union gets all sorts of kick backs from the city and state if they take these same "underprivileged " folks into their apprenticeship program. And that is basically the same anywhere in the Northeast. I would imagine California operates along the same lines. Back in the 1850's when alot of immigrants came from Europe, alot of families were split North or South depending where there boat landed. These days the new lot coming in are heading East or West to the Socialist States of America! And why not, Robbing Hood and his Crew have no qualms taking from those who have little and giving it to those who don't even have green cards! Only in America! Really, only in America!
I have worked both sides. I am 19 as well. I worked in a non union shop when I turned 18 and worked there for 8 months and then went union. What I've seen in my short time is that non union has lower wages, benefits aren't as good ect.....at 19 in a union I have very good benefits, wages are great and I'm getting paid to learn every part of the trade. And I have a brotherhood all across the country. I am a 5th generation union pipefitter.

@@Welderbeast I'm never offended don't worry. The national average is roughly 35k which is crap money. only roughly 10% take home more than 50k. I'm not expert I've been doing welding and fabrication work for around a decade and it's feeling like a decade too much for the pay so I'm skeptical to even promote it as a career.
Kyle G I’m certainly glad your never offended that way we can have a civil conversation about this matter. I’ve been in the trade for 10 years as well, I honestly don’t promote “averages” I just focus on promoting the opportunity a person could have if they apply themselves fully. If a person goes at life average they will get average results in my opinion. Now for my experience, at 19 and 20 I was making over 50k in this trade, by 22 I hit 6 figures for the first time. I’ve been surrounded for years by friends and acquaintances that have also pulled 6 figure incomes from this trade consistently. So I can see how my opinion is skewed and biased toward optimism and “potential” over the average. I’m sorry you’ve had a rough go at it but the opportunity is out there. I can say confidently because I lived it, as I said before, I’m only talking out of my personal experience.

Take off his OT and recompare does your union give you optional OT?

Thanks for the info brother. I recently finished a welding course at my local trade school and applied for local 433 in (Los Angeles) apprenticeship program. It’s been about 2 months since I applied and I haven’t been chosen. They need us to get a sponsor from an eligible contractor but all the numbers I’ve called ain’t hiring. Anyone here have advice on what to do? Thanks in advance
It matters because you are treated better in a union. I knew a dude that was 23 work for my crappy factory job was there for 2 months then left joined union making 89 bucks an hour. I told him nice job that's better for you. He told me I was the only one who was happy for him.

Well my days of wanting and trying are behind me (I'm too old now) but years ago when I had my best chance of admission you had to have a hook or a rabbi as we say here. A member in good standing like your dad or Uncle or your dad's best friend to get you through the door then it was up to you ultimately. Depending on your rabbi's pull, it could really tip the scale in your favor. But along the way since then, certain groups of people have been getting preferential treatment and free training to make the world a more diverse and equitable place!
In other words, in NY, if you have nothing you get Sect.8 housing money, food stamps,health care and not only free training but you get paid a regular pay check to go. Then if you complete the training you can apply for the union. Of course the union gets all sorts of kick backs from the city and state if they take these same "underprivileged " folks into their apprenticeship program.
And that is basically the same anywhere in the Northeast. I would imagine California operates along the same lines.
Back in the 1850's when alot of immigrants came from Europe, alot of families were split North or South depending where there boat landed. These days the new lot coming in are heading East or West to the Socialist States of America! And why not, Robbing Hood and his Crew have no qualms taking from those who have little and giving it to those who don't even have green cards!

what union were you in?
I have worked both sides. I am 19 as well. I worked in a non union shop when I turned 18 and worked there for 8 months and then went union. What I've seen in my short time is that non union has lower wages, benefits aren't as good ect.....at 19 in a union I have very good benefits, wages are great and I'm getting paid to learn every part of the trade. And I have a brotherhood all across the country. I am a 5th generation union pipefitter.

Maybe you should be thankful for the labor movement of the past and 7 day workweeks are in china and history books. The government orchestrated union decline is why corporate ceo's earn 400x what workers earn at some companies.

@@kyleg8230 I'm just talking from my experience brother, I don't know where your getting the 35k number from. I've personally never made that in the time I've been in the pipefitting trade. Let's have a good convo about this, I know I don't know everything so I am always open to others perceptions. How did I offend you in this video and what would you have done differently?
@@Welderbeast I'm never offended don't worry. The national average is roughly 35k which is crap money. only roughly 10% take home more than 50k.
I'm not expert I've been doing welding and fabrication work for around a decade and it's feeling like a decade too much for the pay so I'm skeptical to even promote it as a career.
Kyle G I’m certainly glad your never offended that way we can have a civil conversation about this matter. I’ve been in the trade for 10 years as well, I honestly don’t promote “averages” I just focus on promoting the opportunity a person could have if they apply themselves fully. If a person goes at life average they will get average results in my opinion. Now for my experience, at 19 and 20 I was making over 50k in this trade, by 22 I hit 6 figures for the first time. I’ve been surrounded for years by friends and acquaintances that have also pulled 6 figure incomes from this trade consistently. So I can see how my opinion is skewed and biased toward optimism and “potential” over the average. I’m sorry you’ve had a rough go at it but the opportunity is out there. I can say confidently because I lived it, as I said before, I’m only talking out of my personal experience.
