I’m 68 and looking back on so many years of wishing I could keep my house clean and tidy easier. But I am part of the “accumulate more” generation. I’ve learned so much from you younger gals and have been decluttering lately and also just cutting back on shopping. I can already tell a big difference in the way my home looks!

I think it is addictive. When my sister and I would have a garage sale it was so satisfying to have things gone and make $$. I would look for more things to pull out and offer for sale. Now I'm thinking money might not have been alI I was looking for. That feeling of wow it's gone and I'm glad because I really didn't need it anyway was part of the payoff.

Carol Sailer - same here! I often don’t know where to start so I end up not doing it. I want to know what a clean simple life looks like - so far it’s challenging! For ex: I want to clean out my fridge at that moment but wait the counters not clear, there is stuff that keeps accumulating on the kitchen table (I have a very tiny kitchen and not much or any functioning cupboards - height issue - built in shelves aren’t good height) so then I wait till every thing is clean but other issues come up so...on and on....

Jennifer Barney we will be selling our house soon. Getting rid of a BIG collection of Boyd’s Bears yesterday by trashing them. We’ve had a mold problem and the bears couldn’t be saved. They were love gifts from my husband. I cried hard the whole time I put them in a trash bag! I could do it again even writing. 😢 I told my husband after doing that....NOTHING is sacred anymore. I’ve already taken truck loads to places like Goodwill and have, in the past, put as much as 16 contractors trash bags to the garbage. Yet it’s such a small amount. Sigh. But when we move, I refuse to take all the stuff with us. Time in prayer and calling out to God for help has been key.
Thank you for these videos! They encourage me....and the fight is still on.

Cathy Bunker: Hi, I am my 60’s as well and I am struggling to minimize our home. We had 2 large homes (up north and Fl) plus when my mom died, we invited my dad to come live with us so we inherited tons of his things. Well fast forward years later....my dad, brother and cat all passed this past year and the emotions are so overwhelming to get rid of everything. We have made numerous trips to donations centers, sold a lot online but we still have a mountain of things to get rid of. I cook/bake for others a lot plus make a lot of homemade things so getting of rid of those things is putting me into a panic. Why? Because what will I do once it’s all gone? This COVID thing has changed everyone’s lifestyle. I stopped buying things and focused on experiences but now we can’t travel much with everything shut down. I think our age group is a little challenged because our parents went through the depression era and taught us to save everything and not be wasteful. I know that isn’t always ideal so I continue to go through each box and donate items. Each day is different. Some days I can whiz though everything and just get rid of it. But some days, like today, I am overwhelmed to the point of closing the door and not dealing with it. I feel like I are running out of time to get it all done. (Health issues) I wish you the very best in your endeavor to declutter your living space. Thank you for your service in the hospitals.

Well said! I feel the same way. I have found that I needed to declutter and simplify when I became a mom. My husband was very supportive. My in-laws were often very unkind, calling me anal, picky, and OCD. Now, years later, I realize their judgmental attitude toward me was from envy. The meanest ones were also the the ones with the most debt and the most clutter. We have recently retired at a very young age, middle 50's, and are happy that we set our priorities when we were in our early 20's. You are doing a great job! Omg! Dawn you said exactly as I feel, like the old saying “ you took the words out of my mouth”
I love living simply, life just feels so peaceful, and I don’t regret or even think about anything I have donated.
My husband and I and friends of ours have the same model home, when ever they come over, they will say my home looks double the size of theirs, I know it’s because their home is filled all over with nic nacs, framed photos, and a BIG china closet filled with possessions, artwork on every wall. When I’m there, I will admit I feel a bit overwhelmed by it all, when they visit us they say they feel ZEN.... and peaceful.
Today was a big day for me, I had a very expensive collection, when I started to rid our home of things, we didn’t need or love, I put them in a rubber made container, thinking this winter I would start listing them on eBay, but instead I gave them to a charity to be auctioned off with the proceeds to help abused animals, I walked away feeling so good... I also have a declutter muscle now, nothing I give away bothers me.
I love your channel, it’s wonderful to be in company of people who get it. This is where I find my TRIBE....

Just decluttered our house as we are moving across country and cant fit much in a truck/everything will be small storage for awhile=money. Initially i felt dread and a feeling of oh hell no when told i needed to part with stuff as i wasnt expecting this move and i originally hated words like minimalism as to me it felt hipsterish n like a dumb trend. However i realize decluttering is so necessary and im actually glad i did it. I plan on doing it now yearly like when u do ur spring cleaning. It really helps u see how much money/time u waste on stuff u dont need at least in my case and just in general. It also helps u utilize what u do use better. It also helps with cleaning n organizing ur life. It puts ur life, money n time in perspective.

I have always been a collector of things, but became a hoarder of stuff over the last 5 years when I lost my best friend of 30 years and depression set in. I'm out of the depression fog and shocked at how bad stuff has gotten. I know this will take time, and I don't think I'll ever be fully a minimalist but I do know I don't want to hoard stuff. HUGS for being real and open about your family's journey.

We are in the uphill, actually at the beginning of uphill. We had a traumatic event happen in our family about 5 years ago, and my house got out of control FAST. It's been weighing on me heavily, so I started just a few months ago (although I've been following you for much longer). It is so difficult, but I want my home back! I want it to be a sanctuary for my family, not a burden. I have been taking "before" photos to keep me motivated and seeing my real progress as well.
Thank you for all that you are doing for so many of us out here!!

    Yes! This!
I am continually simplifying, peeling the onion layers away. As a young mother/wife, I thought more was better. More toys, more dishes, more clothes. Ugh.
And now, I see the simplicity is best light. Fewer items, fewer choices, less arguments, easier chores, faster tidying and more money saved.
You're still ahead of me but I'm inspired by your home. Simple living is a lifestyle that I hope to pass to all my children. (I was raised by a hoarder, so it means so much more to me)
    Bless you and your family!

I just recently heard some wise words about how you cant make positive changes in a negative environment. I've had to get outside help because I cant do it myself. Plus she would say my house felt so cold 🤣😂. I would tell her why do I have to keep things if i dont use, need or like. She would get mad and till this day she sees me as the weird daughter 🤣😂. I remember laughing with my aunt as I told her how recieving 'mom's stuff' was gonna affect my minimalistic journey and what my kids were gonna say after years of tackling my sweet family of wanna be hoarders! I've been using the onion method for years! Every time it gets tighter and tighter! So here comes yesterday and I decide in cleaning my carpets. Since I have hardwood floors this means taking them up stairs! Years ago I would have put it off because it meant moving everything then putting it back! 29 minutes after deciding it (your videos motivate me so much) I rolled and hauled it upstairs where i had THREE items to move. The toy box gr'pa's brother made, my grands bed, and mom's antique sewing machine! As I looked around that room (and here's what today's video reinforced) it was so comforting. One futton couch in between 2 china cabinets displaying mom and gr'ma's items with the sewing machine sitting on a wall. No boxes, no clutter, and NO stress. It is so freeing and healing to be able to touch those memories and include them in my working daily life!
Thanks for constantly reminding me to never give up!😎👋😜

Fantastic advice! What I would like people to know is if they really think they want to declutter and lead a more minimal life, they need to be prepared to be BRUTALLY HONEST with themselves. Also, people need to understand that just because they think they want minimalism, some (most) family members who live with them don't want to toss or donate all of their stuff. Compromises will have to be made.

What I would have told my past self instead of going shopping for more stuff to make me happy I should have spend quality time with my two boys. Now they are grown men and I hardly see them and realize if I could have rewritten my life story I would have lived a much more simpler life and realize going shopping for more stuff does not make us happy. happy was right there in front of my eyes, (my sons), but unfortunately shopping for more stupid stuff got in the way 😪. Moms, who have young kids take note of what Dawn said because in a blink of an eye your kids grow up. Don’t waste your time in accumulating stuff to impress people or shop to fill a void.

My minister, a very intelligent young man ('young' in my 67 year old mind) and his equally intelligent wife, have nine children, ages from 19 down to one year. They have a large house, of necessity, but they are the most organized, neatest, cleanest family I've ever known in my life. While they're not minimalists, it's very difficult to see where their "stuff" is because the parents have taught the children right from a few months old on up, to put everything away when play time is over, to vacuum the carpets, sweep and mop the floors, etc. He gets his children motivated by saying "The reward is in the effort, not at the end of the journey. Take the time to enjoy what you're doing to get to the end goal, because there's a lot to be learned along the way." He admonishes us adults with that, too, and I've found that he's right---there is great reward in the DOING, not just in the result. I just wish I'd known that when my own two children were still alive....

Dawn, you have been a huge inspiration and help to me. I started maybe back in January or so, and it has been a slow process. I have osteoarthritis in my knees, and it's very hard to work. But finally, I am seeing great results. I'm still working on it and will continue to peel the onion, but you are so right! I don't miss any of it! Early on, when thinking of the money spent on items, my mantra was, "Mistakes were made." And then I just kept plowing through. You're also right about wanting more simplicity. Thanks for helping me through this.

Don't think about "fully minimal" because that's not real. Like kimleein09 said, it's different for each family and it will be different for you and your husband. I don't know if you know The Minimalists, but they've been a huge inspiration for me and I really think you'd like Joshua Fields Millburn's Home Tour. It's a 5 minute video and you can see his house looks exactly like a normal house, minus the clutter. When people say "minimalism" they immediately think about "nothing on white". It will only be that if that's what YOU like. There's no rule book, no recipe. Your minimalism will never be the same as mine, or anyone else's. So don't worry about it. ;)

"People won't think you're weird." After doing some major decluttering for months, my MIL recently came by for the first time and I was a little worried that she'd ask about where all our stuff was. She walked into the living room, looked around and said, "Oh, things look pretty much the same here..." She definitely didn't mean it as an insult, more as a comfort to herself given that we had all been missing each other during covid. But it made me realize how much people just don't see our houses or our stuff, and that it was OK for me to do what I needed to do and I could let go of other people's expectations. No need to worry about being perceived as weird.

I started with kitchen pots and pans , dishes... then to closets ... then clothes. I went to bed at 1AM the first night and woke up and started over again on some shelves I saw I didn't do enough!! Yes, I wanted LESS stuff... got all bookshelves done (and I love books)! My counters are cleared off and I love it... I'm so pumped! I feel so free! One of the best decisions of my life (decluttering only, I'm faaaar away from being a minimalist and don't think this would fit me)

I was saving them for him, and now that he's 24, had him look at everything. He basically told me to throw everything away except a few things. Realized all those years of moving, it was all for nothing basically since he is very minimal. Less is definitely more!

I love this video! Actually can't wait to watch it again cuz it gets me so jazzed to keep simplifying!! The craving for more simplicity is REAL and it's the best craving I've ever had! Over the last couple years I've been watching your channel, my family's mood and how we communicate has skyrocketed because of simplifying!! Who knew that hidden clutter affected us so much?! My family used to get so stressed trying to put all that stuff we had "in the right place" where I wanted it. They'd get frustrated, confused, defeated. Now it's become so clearly defined where everything goes! Our realtor came by the other day and I randomly asked a question about our bedroom closet. And I was able to take her RIGHT back there... because everything was clean! No secret piles of junk frantically stashed anywhere when company's coming! Hurray!! Our previous home was BIGGER than this one and we spent 10 years longing for it to be bigger. No! We didn't need it. Less stuff = more room! It's the cheapest "remodel" ever!! 😄 I'll never go back-- this is the good life! Thank you every day, Dawn!!!

I have been "goggling" your channel for a little while now, every once in a while for about two months. I came across this posting on my "recommended" list today, and I am so glad I did. My story: I am 50, I have moved at least two dozen times in my lifetime (former husband was military), and now I am engaged to a quadriplegic (for the past 13 years). We have been in the same home, always renting, for the past 5 years, and suddenly the landlord needs to sell. We have become so accustomed to this house. It is just the two of us in a 3 bed, 2 bath, full basement BIG house. So much storage for all his medical supplies and anything else we could ever want or need. We don't know yet if we are going to need to move (we were told about 3 weeks ago). And I have been just so anxious about tackling this place. Watching your videos has given me the inspiration to just do it. Even if we aren't going to have to move, I have to just do it. I have a back injury and have been letting things collect everywhere: the spare room (!!!), the dining room (which is also my craft room) and the basement is what they call organized chaos - meaning, I know exactly where something is, but could never explain to someone how to get to it. It really all needs to be dealt with, not so much in that I need to do it in order to move possibly into a smaller place, but also, if something happens to me then my fiance will be able to be taken care of easier. Thank you so much. I hope you know that your videos, advice, experience, and positivity are exactly what a lot of need. God bless you and your family.

I was just talking to my little sister about sentimental items. She mentioned that she’d been handed-down a really large painting from our grandfather. He told her our recently deceased grandmother had loved it. My sister is about to move into her first apartment and wondering if she should bring this painting. She feels attached to it for sentimental reasons, but she’s not crazy about it, and neither one of us even remembers our grandmother ever discussing this painting, or even seeing it hanging in her home! I told her to take a picture and then donate it and leave free space for the things she loves.
