DAWN...My favorite words that triggered my brain and actually made the most sense to me was INVENTORY...how much do I want to manage and the Silent To Do List?! Simplify too...ah ha haaa...honestly everything you have said on here...they all click....like the perfect list to go in order...I just adore you and your family
I love how much you and Tom were laughing while you were demonstrating the Helix bed. :) thanks for having fun with each other it invites us into your world. :)
Dawn! I just want to let you know that I thank our Lord for creating you; giving you this passion in your heart to help us out of the these cluttered houses some of us are drowning in mentally. So thank you for each video you share with us! God is good to us!❤🥰🙌❤🤗
You know...this is weird, but for SOME of the stuff I've decluttered, it made a difference WHERE I donated it. I was taking things to our local Good Will, and they just honestly seem like they don't care. There's one big bin to throw everything in, if something gets squished at the bottom, so be it. The idea of someone else getting enjoyment out of an item I decided to pass on was dying in that giant bin. Then I found a local Catholic thrift store. I'm not Catholic, but the ladies at the donation place are SO FRIENDLY AND CHEERFUL! They are genuinely thankful and say "thank you" out loud when you bring a donation by. They sometimes even say out loud "oh this will go with the kids items" or "wonderful, we can put this with dishware." And the shop itself is so neat, clean and organized. I feel like the things I donate are appreciated, loved and will be loved. Makes it so much easier for me with certain items!
I completely agree! My favorite place to donate (the staff were so sweet and helpful) was receiving so many donations they had to start storing things in a Pod. I stopped taking my things there because I no longer was confident they needed or could process more stuff before it was “storage worn”
I had trouble donating because I know how the industry works. Unfortunately, most of what is donated into those bins in parking lots, enters a for profit system. Even if there is a charities name, often the charity only gets a small fee to use their name. I give my things to retired friend who takes craft items to local nursing homes and clothing to a community center which donates it directly to people who wear them. I take my housewares to a local thrift store where the ladies put the things right on the shelves. Old formal dresses I donate to a charity which distributes them to high school girls who need prom dresses. And, when I had business suits I donated them to a women's organization who gave them to women who were interviewing or just starting out. You can also donate things to a women's shelter.
I agree. I donate all I can to the local women's domestic shelter. These ladies and their children are starting out new, with nothing. So everything I have that they can use I love to give to them.
What clicked for me is "if everything's important, then nothing's important". It made me take a look at what I'm really valuing. If I'm not using it anymore or using it for its intended purpose, then do I really value it? I even celebrated my 10 year wedding anniversary, by running a 10k (10k for 10 years), in my wedding gown. My husband ran in his suit. We had so much fun, made such lasting memories one last time, and then I discarded my wedding gown. It was only sitting in my closet, taking up space, and by having lost weight, I felt even prettier on my 10th anniversary then I did when I originally wore it. It was spectacular and I will cherish doing that forever, without any regret in discarding my wedding gown. 👰♀️
That's cool! Some people try keeping their dress for a daughter. My grandma tried that, but all her daughters were way taller than her. Also, by the time it came around to it, it turned out the dress hadn't been stored properly and had gotten moldy. 🙁
I was hanging onto some homeware that belonged to my Nana. I meant to (eventually!) donate them, but when I finally pulled them out, I found that 20 years of storage had spoiled all but a few. So the trash can it is, and the feeling of relief is amazing! My grandmother is not in those plates and glasses, I can honour her memory better by living free(er) from piles of stuff.
For me, I think about loving people and making memories rather than loving things. For example, when my parents died, I realized that I didn't need or want any of their stuff. I just wanted them.
My mother-in-law told me about you probably a month ago. Since then, you've been on in my house pretty much non-stop, and I've showed your videos to my mom and both of my sisters. I'm currently packing to move two states away from my hometown with a five month old. Thank you for all of your videos! You've been so helpful in this season in my life. I love your transparency! Also, I play your videos to my sleeping baby, because I don't have to worry about what he'll hear! Haha! You're incredible. :)
I can tell u that you have help me be a better mom and wife my house is so relaxing now a place I can clean in less than 15 minutes. My kids look at cleaning as something they just do for a little everyday with mom and then we r off to play. Ty for all u have thought me🥲
Don’t buy the containers!!!! Until you declutter and the stuff fits where you want it. More containers doesn’t mean more organized! Thank you for telling us in some video that containers are not the first solution. 👍🏼🙌🏼
Yes, that was the old me. I've not only decluttered my stuff, but I was able to donate it in the bins, because I no linger needed most of them. I do like the ideas of the container creating the boundaries though, so helpful.
One phrase that really helped me clear out some of my sentimental items that belonged to my Grandmother and Mother was “ This is not my memories” the items were things that they had used and collected. I just ended up keeping a few treasured items that were my memories of them .
Good for you. I've had to go through items handed down to me from my grandmother. And I ended up with some items that I do not have specific attachment too. When I decided it wasn't something I was going to keep it helped to think "This item served it's purpose for my grandmother and now it can serve a purpose for someone else." I don't need to keep everything to remember her.
Yes, me too. I just went through a lot of things I was saving, held memories of my first years with my husband. I lost him 10 years ago & still have all those memories, without those things packed in boxes cluttering up my precious space in my few closets. I was able to take each item, smile at the memory & bless someone else with it. I keep thinking maybe someone else, that is just starting out, will use & appreciate these things. That has helped free me.
Now that you have me hooked on decluttering (I actually find the results to be very therapeutic) the standard question I ask myself when I'm out shopping is, "What's the chance that this will someday be part of my decluttering efforts?" If the chance is pretty good that it will, it about always gets put back on the shelf.
I love the story James Clear uses in Atomic Habits about the man who uses the term ‘resetting the room’ instead of tidying the room. I don’t know why but I hate tidying but I can reset like a boss!!!
Our kitchen has been completely transformed. It started with wanting to have the countertops cleared. So, where do you put the stuff that was on the countertops? In the cupboard, but the cupboard was full. So, we decluttered the cupboards. The biggest change, that got the whole transformation started was putting the lids/covers on the storage containers. We found quite a few tops with no bottoms and bottoms with no tops. We found we had containers that we rarely used - out the door they went. It has been such a TIME SAVER to reach into the cupboard, grab a container and have the lid with it. Used to take a LOT of time just sorting through to find the tops that went with the bottoms! Once the containers were decluttered we moved on to the rest of the cupboards. Found stuff we never use/eat and gave them away. That opened up space for the appliances that were taking up space on the countertops. We decluttered the appliances as well. We had items that did the same thing as other items so we kept the ones we preferred and gave away the others. I LOVE having empty counters!!! It makes it SO much easier when we come home from grocery shopping. We set the bags on the counter, empty the bags and at a glance we can see what we have, sort it out and put it away. Also, the empty counters make meal preparation so much easier. There is space for a cutting board to chop up vegetables, space to roll out dough for a pizza or pie, space to set all the ingredients out BEFORE starting to make the meal. SPACE, SPACE, SPACE. We have a donation box right by the door leading to the garage. I am retired and only go into town once a week so I bring the box with me to drop off the donations. Stream-lined the process with having that designated spot. Box gets full, it gets put into the car for the next trip into town. I'm in the process of working on the walk-in closet and at the same time, working on a strategy to attack (yes, attack!) the sewing room and quilting studio. Yes, I have 2 rooms dedicated to my hobby and really need to do some major decluttering and cleaning in both especially since my parents passed away and I now have stuff from my mom's sewing room as well. I didn't bring in 1/2 as much as I would have had I not had the mental focus on what would REALLY benefit me and my hobby when I was first packing my mom's sewing room. A LOT was donated to the thrift store and a LOT was tossed out leaving just what I REALLY want to work with. Not a lot of odds and ends but things I will truly cherish. Just the one sewing machine that I learned to sew on and not the other 2 that I gave away. Just the fabrics I will use not the little bits and pieces that I won't. My mom had taken on the challenge of getting rid of 10 items a day about 2 years ago. So glad she did!!! They'd been in that house for 49 years (a LOT of accumulation!). Only needed 2 dumpsters instead of 4 or 5 to clear the house out because she DAILY worked on decluttering. She also had an accountability partner (who I met at the funeral). So, in conclusion - manageable portions, on a daily basis makes a BIG difference! Go for it!!!!!!
My kitchen is being transformed too. I started with just trying to wash the dishes every night. No dishwasher. Then I took out extra dishes and cookware that I didn't like or never used to make more space for what I do use. Just last week I got the largest part of the counter emptied! I love it. I have usable space again. And it's much easier to keep clean.
I think your sentence “this stuff isn’t supporting my goals” hit me hard. Just to see how “stuff” gets in the way of having a better life was a wake up call for me! Thank you both for all the love and laughter your videos bring to my house. You are an authentic person and that is what I love about you. 🙏🏼
The silent to-do list really resonated for me. "I should do this, I should do that, put this here, take that out, haul this away, donate that....Blagh! Stop talking to me!" I've done a few things and was quire surprised that it's a little less noisy now. Still got some racket, though.
I feel like the elephant in the room is depression (something like half of all women suffer from it). And, Dawn, I know you're not a therapist but I do think you could address it via decluttering. A lot of your words - procrastination, overwhelmed and unmotivated feelings, inability to focus - are the same words therapists use to diagnose depression. Just a thought. I think you could do it really well!
@@francesrevetria8914 I will! I don't actually suffer from it... but I struggle with friends who do and employ my help to get rid of stuff. It's HARD. Dawn's channel is SO midwestern and positive... but I always wonder why she never addresses The Issue.
I feel that without putting a label on “it” (depression)….. Dawn does address depression! Dawn has many ways in which she encourages us to think differently from the negative voices in our head about our lack of motivation, the weights of clutter/chaos, fooling ourselves about our body image in hanging onto clothes, our insecurities that can feed our chaos and “hanging” onto items, etc. I was just telling my husband about Dawn and how she has learned, researched, encouraged us, shared her own faith story….etc. I could go on about this for awhile😃. Thanks to Dawn and the teaching of the Holy Spirit within her and in Tom!!
Yesterday, I had to declutter my main floor, because my realtor was coming over to look at my house and compare it to comps. It took me more than half the day. I did find donations and garbage, but I realized I don't want to take all day to declutter! If it takes me that long that means I have too much stuff! I plan on starting today to declutter every day, so next time my realtor comes to take pictures I will have to take only an hour to prepare for her arrival. Thank you so much Dawn! I really appreciate all your support and encouragement. Kat
What clicked with me was when you talked about why it feels so good and peaceful when you go on vacation and stay in a hotel. Because you don't have ALL THE STUFF.
My guest room is so beautiful… it makes me want every room in the house to be that simplified too! It’s very much like the hotel/spa idea, but just with my guest room.
@@amandah2935 I agree. I don't like hotels. I never have. For a few reasons, actually. I get claustrophobic when I'm 'stuck' in a hotel, as I prefer outside nature type activities and hotels are smack dab in the middle of town. What do I do in there?? I don't like TV or shopping. I also have absolutely no sense of direction so to go for a walk, all buildings look the same, I'll be lost in no time. BUT... Get me in a sparsely stocked cabin where you walk out the door to a firepit, lake, BBQ, mountains, or other outdoorsy place, and AHH!! Minimalism rocks in that setting!!
My mother-in-law shared one of your videos with me about 2 months ago. Our family experienced a lot of change within the last year. My husband and I welcomed our second child, I adjusted to virtual learning as a teacher, and the Lord led my husband to change his career path. Amongst all the blessings and trials I was bogged down by all the "stuff" in our house and kept putting off "organizing." Within the last month, I have devoted 5 minutes to decluttering. Almost every time this led to at least an hour of decluttering. I have been able to make at least one "pass" through every room in our house and it's amazing how much better I feel about our home. So, thank you for being a rainbow amongst the storms that we have been facing here lately. I thank the Lord daily that my mother-in-law discovered your channel and shared it with me.
The phrase that changed how I feel about stuff was when you said holding onto to something does not put the money back in the bank. I was finally able to let go of clutter. I just finished washing my kitchen cabinets, since decluttering, our house is so easy to keep clean. I listen to you in the background 😁❤️
I remember her saying that when she did the bathroom declutter and the checking account example a long time ago! It helped me get rid of a lot of things that I was keeping just because they were expensive even though I never used them. Particularly clothes and cosmetics
This is the first comment I have posted. I cried today when you talked about how trying to balance our lives doesn’t work. I am one of those who has tried many different planners and systems. What a waste. I will try to keep the 80/20 rule and 2 goals in mind.
"I chose people over things" this is my mantra lately. I repeat it often. It resonates with my husband as well. We are focused on our family and personal connections. Things do not help us achieve this goal.
My parents and nephew stayed with us in our small house for several days and it wasn't even stressful. The kitchen got a little messy, but it took no time to clean up. I really believe having such a minimal home made it much easier to have guests. There were plenty of empty space in closets for their belongings. They've never stayed with us before and we're actually looking forward to them visiting again!! Experiences like this make me want to go more minimal. It reinforces that my life is meant to be more than time spent managing a bunch of stuff until the day I die.
Dawn, you and Tom are amazing! I have family staying over all week. The prep for their arrival was stress free because of you. I could focus on cleaning showers and dusting instead of stressing to clean up clutter. I did not have to throw things into a closet because I ran out of time. Right now I got rid of about 50% of unnecessary items. I went from having no hangers to over 50 unused clothes that I didn’t wear. You taught me about the mental inventory that we keep in our heads. Thank you to both of you for bringing smiles to my family every week.
You two are PRECIOUS!! 😂😂 For me, it’s the idea of my grown children having to “go through my stuff” and wondering why they’re stuck doing it! Keeping one or two very special things from each grandma, mother in law, mother… makes so much sense (like your grandma’s candy dish). And it’s all we need to remember them💕
As a recovering pack rat, what really helped me finally let go of stuff was finding like-minded people who had already blazed a trail and were willing to share their decluttering wisdom. I tried various methods in the past, but really mentally clicked with Dana K. White and her container method. From there I discovered Dawn's channel, and was inspired to get rid of more. I'll never fit into the minimalist category, but I've now decluttered my house thoroughly, and l approach acquiring new things in a completely different way. Finding that match was my recipe for success!
Your enthusiasm and your faith in me help me to have faith in myself. Thank you. P.S. One of the attributes of an excellent teacher is being able to present information differently so every student "gets it". Another attribute is that you lay awake trying to figure it out and that you worry about anyone not "getting it". Thank you for caring and sharing. You've got the good parent goalmet.
How about this...clutter causes procrastination to everything important - physically building a wall that not only distracts but immobilizes us and therefore halting our progression or at the least slowing us down and often stealing our focus so we forget our original goals.
My clutter caused me to be depressed, and it was hard to get started. I would lay on the couch and watch TV or go online so I didn’t have to look at it. A coworker told me about Marie Kondo, so I listened to her audiobook. Around the same time my brother was visiting from out of state, and he was in my house and said in a serious tone of voice, “You have a lot of stuff.” Well, coming from my brother, the slob of the family, I knew it must be bad! That got me moving. Somewhere along the way I listened to Peter Walsh’s book, “Loose the Clutter, Loose the Weight”, and eventually discovered Dawn! I’m so thankful for you, Dawn. 💕 Now I keep my house tidy, I do laundry on a schedule, and I have much more self-discipline in many areas of my life. 💪. Praise the Lord!
I think most people feel the biggest struggle with time mgmt. After decluttering, no time shopping, looking for stuff, little time cleaning, less decision making, life is so much less stressful, so much more time to breathe! Thank you!! ❤️
I'm sad to say I was raised by a poverty survivor. I learn to hoard. It is true that many times saved stuff saved us in hard times. However, when my mum passed away I had to deal with drawers full of extra soaps, and craft material, and candles, and kitchen ware. I want to be different, and your videos help so much ❤️
Same. My mom died at 53 and I was left with so much junk to sift through. 5 years later I am finally down to 4 plastic tubs. It took lot mentally to get there.
@@Danceswithfishes Feel good that you are working at this task. I have a good friend who has a garage full of her parents things -- they both passed over 30 yrs ago. You are doing well, keep up the good work.
I took me a month to go through my moms things when she passed. I had a time limit, if the apt wasn't empty by the 1st I would have to pay another months rent. I got rid of so much. She had a small apt but there was stuff crammed everywhere, plus a storage unit for all her holiday stuff. I did have to pay for an extra month on the storage unit to get it cleared out. That's when I started looking into minimalism, I don't want my kids to have to go through that. Dawn has helped me so much. Still on the journey but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.
I remember about 6 years ago pre kids realizing that if I ate healthier options 80% of the day I’d stay managing this new healthy weight range. I loved it. Trying to get back to giving myself that dedication with my health.
Your video on simplifying your sons clothes did the trick. Rather than looking at each thing and making a decision about it (impossible task), I could pull out each group of clothes - jeans, tops, sweatshirts, etc. and pick my 5 or 6 favorites and get rid of the rest. I’ve never missed a thing. This motivated me to go through the rest of my house. Life changing!!! Thank you Dawn!
The comment that ‘you don’t have to keep all this stuff’ helped me so much today. Working on the laundry/storage area and got rid of sewing patterns and material that have been in a bin for ages!! I’m on a roll! I’ve been messy all my life and I’m 68 - better late than never! Thank you for these videos!
You continue to inspire so many, and your passion for simple living and minimalism is contagious. Dawn is a GOLD medal WINNER when it comes to minimalism. Love you always.
As I've mentioned before, we recently moved. That was a TOTAL wake-up call for me. You just can't imagine what we purged, donated...or threw away! After living in our new home for a month now...I want to get rid of MORE! Thank you for your inspiration. And...you and Tom are so stinkin cute together!!
I like the principle of “is it making my life better”. This is so genius because I’m just starting this journey and finding letting go of some things harder. Also, your hubs is a riot, “I’m just talking to my people “.
I've always been complimented on how clean and organized I am, but I often still felt so overwhelmed with managing everything. That's when I came across your videos, and I realized it was a matter of inventory. I immediately started decluttering our house a few months before we were set to move. Now that we're unpacking in our new house, I already have boxes and boxes of items for the giveaway pile. Every item I choose to get rid of is a weight off my shoulders. I love this opportunity to "start fresh" in our new house, and I'm so glad to have your strategies to work from.
I think that is a good point. We associate clutter with being untidy, but we can have way too much weighing us down, and still keep it tidy, but it is just so much more work to do that :)
I had the same feeling when I did my first major declutter over a couple of months. It felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. I enjoy going through areas of my home every few months and donating items we no longer use. I have noticed that since we are more choosy about what we buy we tend to use those items much more so we declutter less often but we also buy a lot less than we used too.
When you talk about inventory. Each item in my home is something to manage and keep up with whether with cleaning, picking up or laundry. This helped me look at the mess less emotionally and more strategically. Thank you!
I have another 80/20 rule: Dawn wears black 80% of the time and other colours 20% ! Also great fun with the sleeping arrangements ! Have a great day Dawn !
I took a week off of work (while hubby was out of town) to declutter several areas of my home. It was TOTALLY worth it! Although I still have lots of work to do (a little at a time now), I completely cleaned out the worst room and we can now have company (ie my mom) come over and stay the night! It's been over 2 years since I've had ANY time off of work (vacation or just sick day)...so I just finally said...I MUST take time off. Anyway...thanks, Dawn for all of your encouragement and for providing common sense solutions!
the idea of 'future clutter' really resonates with me; if i dont declutter this now, will i come across this in two months, untouched, with a new layer of dust on it, only to get rid of it then? then it needs to go right now!
A good rule when tackling kids rooms is applying the 80/20 rule which translates to 'for every 2 things you keep you donate 8 things' OR 'for every 1 thing you keep you donate 4 things'.
I'm in transition and recently had to pack my life into 4 medium size suitcases and a couple of carry-ons by a certain date. Talk about laser focused. And the things I saved had to be really important to me to make the cut. When I get transitioned and start building my inventory back up, I will be very selective about what I add.
Now that’s impressive! That took guts and excellent decision making skills. Elon Musk or Donald Trump should offer you a job. Good luck and God bless you to the max.😇❣️🙏🏻
managing inventory has been what really made sense to me; I don't want or need to manage all the inventory. Also, not having shame or guilt into keeping stuff I'm not using. Love your videos they have really helped me get motivated to declutter!
Awww, this was an especially helpful vlog. I've known you are ruthless about decluttering since I started watching your channel. I kept asking myself why I can't be as good at saying goodbye to stuff. I really wasn't applying hyper focus to the task. You mention "well, it goes in that room, so I gotta make it work"... dang woman, that's so me. I'm looking around my family room right now & thinking we really don't use all this... old games, books, DVDs, bean bag chairs, 8 throw pillows on 2 sofas, 4 comfy throws for 2 people. I'm grabbing a box, I'm doing just this rm right now. Ok, I need more boxes. I love you right now. 🙂
“Inventory I have to manage” runs through my head regularly. I am already pretty minimal, but glancing around my house thinking about how much we actually are using…yep, more can go!
What helped me get a lot done to get rid of a lot of stuff was the thought process of not wanting my children to have to deal with more stuff than necessary if I were to pass away. My mom had both of her parents stuff pushed on her in her small place and she had to get rid of a lot. I know from her experience that she didn’t know where to start. I was lucky enough to help her. Even over the phone I talked her through it. Plus she doesn’t drive so I used my car to take away lots to get donated.
I know that feeling about not wanting to leave behind stuff for the kids to deal with. My kids don't want my stuff ( my daughter was a minimal mom fan before me, my son and dnl don't want it). I've decided to donate or Yard sale it. Why not use the money for vacation!
Thank you for teaching me the concept of having too much inventory. It has changed my life. I'm not finished decluttering yet but I make more and more progress every week.
🤯THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED TO HEAR. THANK YOU 🥰 Clarity towards singularly focusing on each area when necessary. Been minimalizing for 2.5 years now and now I’m ‘decluttering’ my mind and life, not just physical😊
For me, what clicked was the simple, “You don’t need as much as you think you need” along with “the more stuff you have, the more stuff you have to manage.” And container method has changed me!!!
Okay... I have spent the last 2 months REALLY decluttering. We have probably gotten rid of 70% of our stuff. Yes, I got rid of things that I still liked, I got rid of things that kinda sparked Joy. But what I have found is I have so much Joy in having a clean uncluttered house. I found I don't HATE to empty the dishwasher anymore, bc I don't have to shove things into spaces. So now I run the dishwasher more which makes my kitchen cleaner which makes me happier. It's A Vicious Circle... in the best way!! And the 5 minute clean up daily is amazing along with the " If it takes less than a minute, Do It NOW." That has changed the way my house feels and bc I have a place to put items that aren't overcrowded, I'm more willing to just take care of it. It has been great, I find I have much better self talk about myself. Thank You for sharing your wisdom!
We just moved cross country with a 6x12 trailer. We got to our new location and it took 5 months to buy a house! That was a crazy 5 months in a hotel with our toddler and dog. We lived out of 4 duffel bags, 1 seabag, 3 totes, and a backpack. We unpacked our storage unit when we finally closed on our house...and good golly! There's so much stuff we didn't miss! And we did a HUGE declutter before we left. My new rule, if I can't name what I need from my box before I open it, those items don't get unpacked. I'm trying to start this house off right!
I have been watching and decluttering for a while. So many comments you have made have stuck in my mind. The “ silent to do list”, stop managing stuff you don’t need, the onion method, etc. I love that you research books, etc. to give us even more ideas! My daughter was helping me put more empty storage containers in the attic yesterday to keep only until she goes to college next year and takes what she needs for her dorm( then I am selling or donating quickly!) I suddenly realized how many organizing and storage containers I had in the attic that I had emptied out from decluttering this past year. It is crazy !! I have become used to my more organized and emptier closets etc. and don’t even know where!!! I had all of those containers in my house! I still have cabinets and closets with items, but I can find the things I want quickly and don’t have to push things around. It has been a joy being able to keep my house cleaner and easier to manage! I do play your videos before and during a declutter and on days I need to get motivated to declutter!! You are a great inspiration!
You and Josh becker were my inspiration towards minimalism. I've been working on my closet, got it paired down to 15 items yesterday. I did a happy dance
Yes! It does. This summer my goal has been to remove one item from the basement each time I go down there for an errand. It might be as simple as an empty cardboard box that needs to go into recycling or an article of clothing from storage that needs to go into the donate box upstairs. Basically, whatever I run across quickly.
I literally pause my favorite Minimalism and Decluttering TH-camrs' videos so I can TEXT myself their really fanstastic quotes that hit me like a ton of bricks!!! "Minimalism isn't camping; it's more like staying at a really nice vacation house!" -Dawn!!! "We don't use them 24/7, so we need a place for them to go when they're not in use!" -Rachel Jones from Nourishing Minimalism "Only the items you use in that room should be stored there. Store personal items in personal spaces." -Rachel "Clutter is a delayed decision." -Hilary from Old World Home "A tidy house happens when putting things away is just as easy as leaving them out." -Cass from Clutterbug "Organizing does not make more space. Decluttering makes more space." -Cass
I have watched you for about three years. This summer I am in a small group book club through my church. I told them about you and you now have some new fans. We decided we are each going to declutter a space and tale before and after pictures. Thank you for doing such an awesome job.
Thank you minimal mom, I am also a minimalist but watching your videos is giving me more tips. Just went and tossed clothes that don't fit and Rubbermaid that has no lids. Love the idea of having less to manage.
I used to try to declutter everything all at once. What's worked for me, now, is to concentrate on one small space at a time. I had a kitchen drawer & container on the counter filled with utensils & I never could find what I needed right away. I took out only 1 of each of what I needed & put the rest in a quarantine box. I only went in it once, I forgot my potato masher. It all fits in the drawer, don't need the container cluttering up my counter anymore & I can find what I need at a glance. The rest, after a month of sitting there, got donated. Next I moved on to the pots & again donated most. I used the same principle with my clothes & so on. It's working great. Thank you Dawn for all your inspiration.
When you told your story about the spats you and Tom would have and that they stopped happening after you decluttered, that was when the "why" clicked with me. The "how to" was the quarantine bin. And more importantly, that things in boxes are already quarantined!
The "quarantine box" has made all the difference for me. I was so afraid to get rid of things, but knowing they were just in the box, made it easier. And like Dawn said, I rarely ever went back to get anything.
What clicked with me on one of the videos was when you said this stuff is always talking to us, sending positive or negative messages to us. So to go along with today's video when you tell yourself that I will use this someday, every time you look at that item it will ask you is it someday yet? Is it someday yet?
I liked it in a previous video when you said to leave the extras at the store. That is hard for me because I live out in the country and I can't just run down the street to Walmart anymore when I need something. However, I agree with "leaving the extras at the store" so that I can be more intentional with purchases. I'm still struggling with when I try to get rid of something that someone else has given us particularly grandparents giving things to grandchildren they get very offended if I don't save every single thing that they get us. I have had to stand my ground in some of these situations. I feel like they cause strife by telling me that I have to choose whether minimalism is it more important to me than their relationship. But I need to remember that putting things over relationships is not God's way. And I need to remember that I am not responsible for them choosing to put the things over our relationship. I feel like they do it in order to control what I do with my house in my things. I know this comment is a bit deeper than what you called for but I think it's important to note that when some people are trying to get rid of things it's not as simple as just tossing the things because they've developed a relationship with the things instead of prioritizing relationships with people.
I have a friend who kept giving things to even knowing I don’t need or want them. If she asked about something I would say I gave to someone who loved it, wanted it, or needed it so much. When she gives me something now I say, straight away, “Oh how lovely , I now someone this would be perfect for”.
My kids love to give me stuff to set around or hang on walls, and it's always so meaningful to what's going on in my life. But I have things NOT on my walls or set out that I WANT because I have no room!!! I finally told them all in no uncertain terms that the only thing they can get that I'll love is a plant. My plants make me happy. I am slowly decluttering, wish I had done it way before I got older and it's so much harder now.
If someone is giving gifts that you don't want, and you have told them to stop, they should stop. It is called respect and boundaries. Would they like it if you junked up their house?
Dawn, you’re just the best. You’ve becoming part of our team. Every space we’re working with, you’re right there supporting us. So positive. Instead of getting rid of, we are gaining freedom from letting go, and when there’s not so much in the way of getting to our goals. Sentimental things we’ve inherited - we have shared, so that others may use them with joy. And keeping one item to remember that connection is the same as keeping everything from that person! You’re so right. I miss my mother-in-law so much. But we let her silver pieces be sold on eBay with the profits going to the animal shelter (she was an animal lover). I know that I wouldn’t and didn’t want to keep them polished. And what was the most meaningful ‘thing’ from her? A 20 year old letter from her that I found in a book. It means everything, I keep it in my nightstand with my glasses and my eye drops! Understanding 80/20 with values/goals in mind is the stuff! I’ll return to this video over and over. Okay, on to my overflowing PJ drawer 🕵🏼
Great timing! I actually took PTO three hours today from 2 PM to 5 PM to decluttering my craft room wish me luck! :-) I'll listen to this than and other decluttering stuff while I do it
Pull up some Dana K White videos of A Slob Comes Clean. There is a recent one where she takes 1 hour and helps a school teacher declutter her classroom. There might be a lot of parallels to your craft room! Get the black trash bag and cardboard donate box ready before you start!
Or dawn has videos on that exact topic also. Her girls are heavy crafters & that was a thing with them. But they got it straightened put & organized. Good luck on your room, crafts are a biggie...GOOD FOR YOU!
I really liked the concept of inventory management, that got me hooked in the beginning. The other video that spoke to me is the one where you suggested putting a sticky note with your goal on it while you declutter, to remind yourself why you are doing this. Instead of asking "what can this thing do for me" I am learning to ask "what can not having this thing do for me?"
I have been decluttering for years however, now I'm starting to focus more on what needs to be added instead of just adding because I see it and think it's cute.
One step at a time! One drawer at a time! That's me and I love where it has taken me. I'm so much happier and healthier. Stress causes many health issues. We can do this!
Every single one of your ideas & illustrations has helped me in some way! It's created a philosophy to declutter by. I'm so grateful for every video you have put out!!
Oh that’s hilarious! Dawn I do the exact same thing. The knee thing and all. Husband says move over so that bony knee isn’t hitting me in the back lol. So funny.
One of your vids really spoke to me. It was about shoes... You said, "Would I pay $5/ month to store these?" THAT QUESTION was my "AHA!" for not keeping boots I had stored and not worn (not comfortable!) For at least 5 years. UGH! Why had I avoided that? I guess I was keeping them just in case. ALSO - Another "AHA!" If I don't like it today, I'm not going to suddenly like it tomorrow. YES!!! Both of those. Nice winter traction boots. Expensive and sturdy. Never worn. Not comfortable. Now in the donate pile. Making room for the perfect-for-me boots!
This was a kick in the pants to watch the Helix commercial part. I bet even Diana never got a personal “show” but we did on TH-cam. Truly to be person that really helps to teach others on TH-cam you have to be willing to share things that we wouldn’t normally. Thank you for your transparency Dawn…and the chuckles.
I love how passionate you are about this subject and how it can help others tremendously! It’s definitely a mission and purpose God has set for your life and I want to say you’re doing it beautifully sister! Blessings to you and your family! 🙏🏻😘
It’s true. We can wake up a lil out of sorts, especially if we’re not waking up naturally on our own. It’s okay. The two of you show a positive marriage with honesty. Keeping it real, keeps us coming back. 🥰
I was a minimalist before I even found you, but you feel like a dear friend with the same passions as me! I don’t think I’m like most of your fans though because I actually declutter for fun, all the time! When you say the hardest part is getting started, for me the hard part is stopping! One question I’ve asked myself for the last 10 years is “Will I care to own this when I’m 75?” (I’m 35). If the answer is no, then I let it go. I picture my grandma who’s in her 80’s and has a huge house full of stuff and it overwhelms me. I always wonder who will eventually have to deal with all her stuff?! I don’t want to burden my family in that way, so I let it go.
This video, 80/20, and the one that you said to look at a piece of clutter and asking how easy or hard would it be to replace this. That is the the idea that has helped me.
Thing that stuck out most was ....stop keeping stuff for the imaginary you! except now.... I'm beginning to see I have time for imaginary me...and guess what???I do it without all the stuff I thought she needed! haha
I found myself and my dreams by decluttering. The things that supported the me I kept and then I actually had time to spend on becoming who I wanted to be. I found out who I wanted to be by clearing out the clutter that had me confused on my passions and distracting me.
These are my top 3 for what's gotten my foot in the door to having a better home that serves me. I'm so motivated and I keep watching/listening to keep up the momentum. 1. Inventory. 2. Kids thrive in a simplied environment. 3. Permission to let go. Mom of 5 kids (6, 5, 4, 2, & 0)❤
9:30 TRUE! The feeling you get when getting rid of things burdening you is so encouraging as well to help you tackle other goals. Even laser focusing on non-declutter goals can help with decluttering too because then you can get rid of the stuff you kept to achieve that goal! 🙌
I am 25 going on 26 newly married. We just sold our 2bedroom home with a full basement and are waiting out this economy in a 2 bedroom apartment. I have gone to the storage unit that we threw the majority of our stuff into for maybe 1 time a month for the 7 months we have had it getting out a box to declutter and we only ever keep about 20 percent of the box! This is such a great tool to learn and Dawn you are a great teacher! I feel so at ease in my smaller space with less to manage and having these tools down the road as our family grows is such a peaceful thought. Thank you!
Thank you Helix for sponsoring this video! Save up to $200 with this link: helixsleep.com/pages/partner-minimalmom plus two free pillows!
Great minds think alike. I just talked about 80/20 in my video on Saturday. 😆 great video friend, very motivating!
That knee-up position is a pregnancy thing that never seems to go away. Sorry, Tom, but I’m 73 and speaking from experience. 🤣
Very helpful perspective. I will use this today. 80/20
I've done the exact same for 26 years, praise God 🙌❣️💕🥰
I agree. I donate all I can to the local women's domestic shelter. These ladies and their children are starting out new, with nothing. So everything I have that they can use I love to give to them.
I love how Tom has gone from "I don't like people" to "This is me talking to my people."
I thought that was funny!!! I recall that.
He was so funny too
I thought it was hilarious when he said that!
Right! I remember him saying that! Too funny!
Hahaha! So true!
TY ! Genius !
That is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G
That’s so sweet 💕💕
Cool idea!
That's cool!
Some people try keeping their dress for a daughter. My grandma tried that, but all her daughters were way taller than her. Also, by the time it came around to it, it turned out the dress hadn't been stored properly and had gotten moldy. 🙁
“This stuff isn’t supporting my goals. Having less stuff supports my goals.” Such a powerful statement t
As a librarian, 20% of our books are the ones checked out 80% of the time! 😊
We ❤️ librarians (my daughter is a teacher librarian and loves her job)
Love libraries and librarians. Though I am the weirdo that checks out the books that never leave. :)
Phrase that stays with me: "Clutter is postponed decisions."
Excellent didn’t catch that🤛🏻🤛🏻powerful
That one has helped me too!
Ohhh very good thought
Wow Crystal, THANK YOU so much and way to go!!!
Yes, we have a lot to learn. She and her sister are a blessing in TH-cam. Don't have to worry about her words or content it is all family friendly. ❤
This is a big help! It’s something I’m struggling with right now.
This is brilliant!👍
Yes, me too. I just went through a lot of things I was saving, held memories of my first years with my husband. I lost him 10 years ago & still have all those memories, without those things packed in boxes cluttering up my precious space in my few closets. I was able to take each item, smile at the memory & bless someone else with it. I keep thinking maybe someone else, that is just starting out, will use & appreciate these things. That has helped free me.
Now THAT makes sense to me. Thank you Bridget. It gives me permission to remove many items from my lounge and kitchen
Now that you have me hooked on decluttering (I actually find the results to be very therapeutic) the standard question I ask myself when I'm out shopping is, "What's the chance that this will someday be part of my decluttering efforts?" If the chance is pretty good that it will, it about always gets put back on the shelf.
Love this!
I love the story James Clear uses in Atomic Habits about the man who uses the term ‘resetting the room’ instead of tidying the room. I don’t know why but I hate tidying but I can reset like a boss!!!
Oh yes, this phrase does sound so much better! Love this!!
I love this too 💝
It's because a reset is to put things back where they live (pretty straight forward) vs "tidy" being such a vague, subjective term :)
I use the word reset. It works for me.
It also implies that there is a "set" way that the room should end up in, as for a play. That clear vision is helpful.
"Having lots of stuff is not supporting my goals." Such a true statement! Also taking one drawer, one cabinet at a time is a really good way to start.
Storing containers with the lid on has been a game changer!
Starting with clear counters was part of my starting the journey, too! It really is glorious ☺
Just want to say thank you for sharing this. It gave me morvitation.
I enjoyed reading your response almost as much as I enjoyed the video itself. Thank you for sharing.
This really has helped me too. So I tend to gravitate to whatever is talking to me the loudest at the time to clear up/out. Thank you!
@@hollylake4293 I love that, Holly! Hmmm. Which pile is loudest? Here I come! 🤨
I totally agree!
@@gweng1983 I love it too! Wow .. great words Holly Lake!
The silent to do list ... for me as well. Dawn truly has changed my life!!
I love the "can it be replaced with $20?" because so often I'm stressing over an item that is worth like $12!
I agree with you. The 'Therapy in a Nutshell' TH-cam channel is excellent.
Check out Nourishing Minimalism! She talks about clutter and depression a lot
@@francesrevetria8914 I will! I don't actually suffer from it... but I struggle with friends who do and employ my help to get rid of stuff. It's HARD. Dawn's channel is SO midwestern and positive... but I always wonder why she never addresses The Issue.
When I’m the most depressed, my house is the WORST. Thanks for mentioning this
I feel that without putting a label on “it” (depression)…..
I often find a hotel room stressful because there isn’t a home for the stuff we brought and things just get left out all over the place.
@@amandah2935 Me too. I'm always cleaning up after everyone when we're in a hotel.
@@amandah2935 me too. I struggle in hotel rooms with my stuff not having homes.
This! ❤
Tom “I’m talking to my people!” 😄
I always love when Tom or one of the kids gets involved with the videos, they crack me up and Dawn brings the charisma and knowledge :-)
You two are PRECIOUS!! 😂😂
For me, it’s the idea of my grown children having to “go through my stuff” and wondering why they’re stuck doing it!
Yes! Well said!
So true!!! I feel like this is exactly what happens to me!!
Perfectly said! This is how I feel too.
Amen.
@@lkmiller2010 I still have boxes to go through. I can't get my head around the stuff she was hoarding.
@@lindapedersen-hylka7170 Linda, I admire you getting through this task and also looking to the future!
I remember about 6 years ago pre kids realizing that if I ate healthier options 80% of the day I’d stay managing this new healthy weight range. I loved it. Trying to get back to giving myself that dedication with my health.
What a great idea! And keeps you from feeling deprived.
Another reason to declutter: STUFF= Something That Undermines Family Fun. That's a Flylady quote ;)
This is great!
You and Tom are ALWAYS such a refreshing break!!
The thing you said a year or more ago still helps me it was “ having more than you need is greed”
The 6% statistic really hit home for me. I'm an extreme minimalist in the making. It's been one of the best journeys of my life.
The Silent To Do list was an eye opening concept.
Me too.
Anyway...thanks, Dawn for all of your encouragement and for providing common sense solutions!
the idea of 'future clutter' really resonates with me; if i dont declutter this now, will i come across this in two months, untouched, with a new layer of dust on it, only to get rid of it then? then it needs to go right now!
yes that one really resonates with me too, thanks for reminding me!
A good rule when tackling kids rooms is applying the 80/20 rule which translates to 'for every 2 things you keep you donate 8 things' OR 'for every 1 thing you keep you donate 4 things'.
Ah hah!! Thank you for the 'visual'!
Excellent!
I'm in transition and recently had to pack my life into 4 medium size suitcases and a couple of carry-ons by a certain date. Talk about laser focused. And the things I saved had to be really important to me to make the cut. When I get transitioned and start building my inventory back up, I will be very selective about what I add.
That happened to me before Minimal Mom. It boggles my mind how little we need.
Keep us posted on your journey!
Now that’s impressive! That took guts and excellent decision making skills. Elon Musk or Donald Trump should offer you a job. Good luck and God bless you to the max.😇❣️🙏🏻
Honestly, I don’t know if I am brave enough to do a 80/20 declutter, but I am going to to do 50/50 with some craft supplies today. Baby steps.
managing inventory has been what really made sense to me; I don't want or need to manage all the inventory. Also, not having shame or guilt into keeping stuff I'm not using. Love your videos they have really helped me get motivated to declutter!
my 2 phrases = "never leave the room (car) empty handed" and "don't put it down, put it away".
We are Tom' s people..lol
We love you too Dawn.
Way to go Meredith, that's awesome!!
Good for you!!!! That's awesome!!!
Dawn speaks my language- Becker eh not so much.. he is too hipster for me. Glad to have found Dawn !
Onion method works wonders! Just a little every day makes such a difference.
Yes!
"Minimalism isn't camping; it's more like staying at a really nice vacation house!"
-Dawn!!!
"We don't use them 24/7, so we need a place for them to go when they're not in use!"
-Rachel Jones from Nourishing Minimalism
"Only the items you use in that room should be stored there. Store personal items in personal spaces."
-Rachel
"Clutter is a delayed decision."
-Hilary from Old World Home
"A tidy house happens when putting things away is just as easy as leaving them out."
-Cass from Clutterbug
"Organizing does not make more space. Decluttering makes more space."
-Cass
The 'inventory ' idea was what really did it for me and is still working for me all the time
The banter between you and your husband is so cute.
They are definitely Soul Mates
“I need to get rid of 90% of this stuff”. That’s a simple (not necessarily easy) action step I can take. Thanks!
My brain made it into a treasure hunt to go find the special 6% and make space for it to shine!
@@lobkethijssen I love that thought process!!!
Good video. It is such a great feeling when you donate stuff and realize you are making someone happy who has so much less,
Great timing!
@@cynthiatanner3616 That is such a great video!
I always play Dawn's videos while I'm decluttering. It's so inspirational. Helps keep me focused.
Get a King!! We finally did, and it is AMAZING!!! It's absolutely worth the extra space it takes.
Oh that’s hilarious! Dawn I do the exact same thing. The knee thing and all. Husband says move over so that bony knee isn’t hitting me in the back lol. So funny.
One of your vids really spoke to me. It was about shoes... You said, "Would I pay $5/ month to store these?"
THAT QUESTION was my "AHA!" for not keeping boots I had stored and not worn (not comfortable!) For at least 5 years.
"Decluttering is supporting my goals" is my new motto. If you wait too long, the weight tacks on.
This video spoke to me the most out of all your videos. I also appreciated the comments from viewers. Thank you!!
So now you've got "dusk" to Dawn" (mattress) hee hee 😀
(I know you can be thankful you're not around me every day 😊)
LOVE your humour!!😂😂
Thank you!
Reading my Bible, sleep, walking, drinking water. My top 4 basics.
