I absolutely wish my mom would have realized the threshold of what is too many clothes and toys 😅 I could NEVER keep my room clean as a kid and it was so overwhelming. Anytime we would tryyy to declutter she would guilt me with "I just bought you that! Or, "you never even wore this!" And I would end up keeping it. Never realized how much of an impact that has continued to have on me as an adult until I started watching your videos. You're amazing, Dawn!!! 💜 I cannot thank you enough!

Yeah, I also wished I knew this sooner, but better late than never :) Especially these past 2 years I have been so overwhelmed with managing our household and I really saw that this influenced my relationship with my boyfriend. I am very hopefull for the future now because I will have to spend less time managing the house and finally spend time on things that are really important to me. I am happy I can teach my future kids this at least so that this will hopefully not happen to them.

I have another tip I call it the clip board method, my husband always has multiply projects going on, but I realized that he really needed someone to set a limit to how many so he can focus and get them done. So I recently started the Clip Board Method, where in you X number of Clip boards and you can't have any more projects going then we have clip boards. It has helped keep him focused tremendously! He can organize them how he wants break down what he needs to do, etc; and he gets things done to completion so things aren't left out in Project Grave Yard with half finished things! I just love your channel it is so up lifting and you are so easy to listen to. Thanks Dawn

We do clipboards for the kids, but 100% should do them for the adults as well (instead of multiple clipboards for projects, one clipboard with a dry-erase list of to-do's to complete before gaining screen time or play with friends..) I LOVE the idea of clipboards for house projects for myself.. I do way too much all at once, get overwhelmed, and then drop all the balls. Thank you for sharing this Elizabeth!

I an A List Queen or as my husband calls them Lizts...I have way to much going on in my head to keep track of projects i need it out of my head. My brother and sister-in-law stayed at my house recently and when my sister-in-law walked into my kitchen the first thing she said was, "Wow, it's so clean!" It hadn't been dirty before, but I had decluttered my kitchen since she'd last been over and had cleared most items from the counters. I think she just didn't know why it felt cleaner - she even said that it hadn't been dirty before. That has really spurred me on to do more decluttering.

A declutter vocabulary phrase to add... peeling the layers of an onion! I started my minimalist journey seriously a couple of months ago. My husband and I have three older children and we’ve lived in our house for 27 years. For the most part I have completed the first pass/layer and have just started the second. I had to keep watching your videos to get past the hurdles you talk about...sentimental items, I paid a lot of money for that, I made need it later, etc. I started to get discouraged when I didn’t see a huge difference right away, but I’m not giving up. Thank you so much for the encouragement and support!

My friend sent me one of Dawn’s videos right after Christmas, 2022. Since then, I have made 6 trips to the donation center and bags upon bags of pure garbage and junk! I didn’t think my home was messy or really cluttered until I approached it with the tools Dawn has shared. It’s been LIFE changing! I feel like a de-clutter addict! Lol. Even my husbands like “your organizing again”? Every space is tidy and free of things I don’t use. I actually enjoy being in our master bath because all my items have a home that feels manageable. Even our shower/bath area has an appropriate space for the items we need for bathing. I could seriously go on and on. If I could encourage anyone with one thing it would be to just start. Pick one small area and I promise you will feel liberated! Another thing that’s helped me to keep going is watching a video each morning after my daily devo. I scroll through Dawn’s content and pick a video that looks interesting. It motivates me every time! Thank Dawn for all the time you’ve put in to help us enjoy the space we live in.

Dawn, you have been such an inspiration. I've been working at this minimalism thing for years-starting with FLYlady and Marie Kondo. I learned a great deal from them, but I needed something to boost me over the hurdle. Then you said it. INVENTORY MANAGEMENT. My mother and I were coupon queens and had a lot of "backstock". I had an epiphany when I heard you declare your dislike of inventory management. I don't like it, either! I hate trying to store and rotate 24 cans of pinto beans. I used them up and now I can get in my cabinets. My upstairs, which is the dumping zone, is now set up for me go up there this winter and really dive into the totes and decide what I'm going to keep and discard the rest, including the 6 totes of Christmas decor that I haven't used in years. My excuse has always been that I couldn't get to it. Well now I can, and if I don't use it this year, it will be invited to leave. I feel so much better, more successful, and even more "worthy", for having gotten all of the work done that I have in the last 12 months. hanks, Dawn!

One of my biggest motivators is actually timing “Frog” projects so I can see how little time they really take. I also make a weekly “to do” list and pull from that daily because having a daily to-do list (other than Frog projects) stresses me out for some reason. Some weeks I can knock out the entire list in a day, but I not sure how motivated I’ll feel from day to day. This quarantine has zapped my motivation.

Maybe you just need a break! Take a week or two off. As long as you’re not reverting to bringing more stuff into your house, you’re not going to be any farther behind when you start again. “Everyone’s decluttering journey is different,” as Dawn often says! Maybe your particular journey will consist of stages - more like a relay race than a sprint or a marathon. You can do this! I know you can.

My oldest just turned 40 - being in the military we moved a lot so I had to keep everything in bins. For the kids bins I had a large Manila envelope by school year (everything that happened or that was important or special went into that folder). I still have these bins. It’s fun to look through from time to time when the kids come home.

I have changed our mail habits and this works for me. Mail never hits the table or any counter top, etc. It mostly goes into the recycle bin, I shred the parts that have our name and address on them immediately, or if it's a bill, then I write the check (yes, I am the only one who still does this), stamp it, and put it in my purse to be mailed the next day. No mail clutter -- ever!

I loved this video, like a synopsis of all the things you have introduced me to. I do have a quarantine box. It’s a mesh hamper in my linen closet. I am always putting something in it, it is there if I change my mind, I’ve actually been using this technique for years while raising my kids. I don’t ever remember going back and taking anything out. When it’s full, I put the stuff in a black (important) garbage bag, and take it to donate.
You’ve taught me the importance of a Sunday box, mine is cute, but not as sophisticated as yours, but just as functional. I keep it on my desk, closed as if it were a decoration, but everything I need is right there.
Memory boxes, that took a little bit to evolve and curate, when I downsized, I already had a bin for each kid, with their name on it. It was easy to hand each adult child their box. For the most part, I don’t even think they knew about them, they were happy, and I had less stuff to move.
Then there is the frog! Yuk! I have always made to do lists, and take great satisfaction crossing things off. Single working mom, four kids and three extras….that’s seven to keep track of. You taught me to recognize the frog in the mass of to do’s, and the benefit of getting that out of the way first.
The other thing that I always did, I see you doing, but I do not see a lot of other mothers doing, is delegating chores to their kids. I was a home economist (really, I have a degree), this is how kids learn life skills and responsibilities. Life skills, like sweeping the floor or emptying the dishwasher are not punishments, they are part of contributing to the family. They need to be factored into their schedule. Everyone is given the same 24 hours in a day, how we use them is up to each one of us. Kids need to learn these things early, as I see you doing with your kids. You can’t throw these things at them when they are 14, and expect them to be happy. Start when they are 2. Put one toy away before giving them a second toy…. It just grows from there….

So if you think what would I take if I had a day to pack then that might help you think about what you really NEED in your life. I know this is an old post, but they help me get myself motivated when I get stuck. I was about 15 minutes in where you were talking about forgetting about your 'inventory'... Yesterday I opened a box and found $83 worth of stocking stuffers I bought from my Avon lady/friend in 2002, receipt included. Not in 2020, but nineteen years ago! I looked at everything, picked out three things worthy of keeping or giving, and marked the whole box 'DONATE'. Yay for me!

I am so THANKFUL that I stumbled across your videos. I am pretty organized, but boy, do I have SO MUCH STUFF. I am always going through my closets and house, gathering things to donate to thrift stores and throw out other things. I still look around and find so much CLUTTER and JUNK/STUFF around my home. I live in a 3 bedroom house that is less than 1600 sq ft. and have 4 kids + 5 dogs. After my adult son moved out, I downsized my home (1 living/dining room, small kitchen, 3 bedrooms, and a loft-which now houses my two youngest sons, 2 bathrooms) before I knew I was adopting kids 3 years ago and I do not have the room to be a pack rat and the energy sucking anxiety each time I walk into my small cluttered home is not good. I am constantly organizing, purging, trying to de-clutter and my house STILL looks like a tornado hit it. I am super organized already with my kids' clothes and rooms plus the rest of the house. My younger kids' rooms, EVERYTHING is labelled and they ONLY have 7 days worth of clothes, underwear, socks, Pjs and those are placed in labelled bins. That has been a life saver for a couple of years. I rotate their clothes out between Spring, summer (only tank tops and shorts since we are in S. Texas), fall, winter. The rest are stored in labelled, plastic bins in the garage. Now I know that just organizing is NOT enough and just getting rid of stuff isn't quite working. I LOVE your videos and have been up all night listening/watching your videos and getting MORE clothes out of my closet. I will finish the other half of my walk-in closet tomorrow. I also LOVE that you are a Christian and PRAY on your videos. THANK YOU for your videos!
