That’s exactly why I created this page so I’m glad you found us! There’s such a lack of reliable takedown techniques for BJJ available online. Will actually be coming out with our first instructional this year so be on the lookout!
Nice bit at the end about specificity in strengthening and conditioning. I’m in the Detroit area but hoping to make it to Grand Rapids to train with you eventually. I bet you and your students would give a SOLID look on the feet!
Awesome content! Im starting wrestling tomorrow and I have no clue how to train on my own time like shadow boxing. I want to incorporate wrestling to my bjj. Im being realistic though, Im 27 and not looking to compete or be the best, but just to better myself. Thanks!
Love this channel, found you today and already subscribed. Going to go through the whole fundamentals playlist. I was wondering if you could do a video though on the order we should focus on these things? As an adult whos come to bjj with no wrestling experience, there's so much to focus on. Hands, head placement, footwork, stance, gripping, distance etc. And that's before I've even shot for the takedown. A video about which order we should focus on these would be great. As in, for the first couple weeks, just focus on stance. Then when that is feeling good, start focusing on footwork. Then focus on hand fighting. Then moving your opponent. Then distance. Then shooting, then finally the actual takedown. These are just examples as I don't actually know but a video outlining this sort of info would be great. I don't have the benefit of spending hours every day at school working on my wrestling, but I get a 2-3 classes a week and it's only briefly when sparring before it goes to ground that I can actually work on these things, so knowing what to prioritise would be amazing. Sorry for the long post, your videos are great and I'm already learning heaps! Thanks a lot.
This video is actually within a playlist I made specifically for beginners! Here I'll leave a link to the full playlist, but this is the first video in an eleven video series that'll take you from complete beginner to basic competence on your feet: th-cam.com/play/PLeKkH0u4qbU0DhpBYbEm20TMnrsoRrIAZ.html
Hey brother I find it difficult to find pure wrestling schools around me (Boston) most schools just focus on bjj but I want learn basic wrestling first- what should I do to find a decent place to learn near me?
Hi, not sure if you'll still read this but had a question about lead leg and it's importance. I also saw you mention you trained striking in the description of the video so thought you'd be the best person to ask... If you are cross training and eventually want to develop wrestling, BJJ and striking, would it not be more beneficial to swap lead legs to the one that is your striking stance lead leg? How important is lead leg in wrestling compared to lead leg in striking? In your explanation, my lead leg would be my right but in a boxing stance i'd have my left leg forward. Or should i have different lead legs anyway....? Thanks for all the content - a huge help!
Hi! Next week my 7 year old will start wrestling. What would be some of the most important tips for a child who wants to wrestle that would help him achieve good results? What should he focus on in the beginning? Thank you very much!
I am right handed and right footed but when wrestling I go left leg lead because I feel collar tie with right arm is more effective as its my stronger arm , is this okay ?
@@WrestlingUniversity I shoot with my left leg lead as its more comfortable , I then outside step with left leg and plant my right knee to execute a low single or double , is this okay ?
You may have an unorthodox style, which I’m all for, just be sure to prioritize your leg position first and foremost. Whichever leg is more comfortable to have forward, keep that one forward (for you the left) and keep whichever leg feels best to push off of to shoot (for you your right leg), keep that one back. Keep in mind there will never be perfect alignment with your dominant hand and dominant leg. Personally I’m left handed, but feel better dexterity with my right hand when I wrestle for some reason. This causes me to be more active with my lead hand-often times reaching with my right/lead hand first which is a sort of cardinal sin in American wrestling, but it never got me taken down like most coaches said it would. So pay attention to the fundamentals, but also allow your natural style to grow as you learn more about wrestling. Wrestling is an art that’s personal and specific so have fun learning and growing into your natural, specific tendencies! 🤼
@@WrestlingUniversity Thanks so much , ill continue to experiment on which style to adopt . I wrestle in the UK and its hard to find tournaments and a lot of practice so will try my best to adapt to other stances whilst also practising whats best fo rme . Thanks for the feedback
@@ethanisaac5946 anytime brother keep up the good work. I know the UK doesn't have as much of a culture for wrestling as other parts of the world, but practice the best you can and you'll be far better off than someone who hasn't practice wrestling at all. Thank you for your engagement and let me know what other questions you have!
First day of preparing for you course. Wrestling is something we barely practice at our gym, and being one of the lightest guys at our gym, i think this is something i really need to get top position.
@@Luc-1991 Fantastic to hear. Keep up the stance in motion work. As a smaller guy, the conditioning and strength you get from stance work will make a huge difference in just a few weeks. Keep me posted on progress.
@WrestlingUniversity i'm doing this every morning now before i go to work. My hands keep getting up a bit too high due to my boxing background, so that's something i need to focus on. For the rest everything is going well.
You definitely want the ability to move backwards. Being able to bait your opponent by using their aggression against them is incredibly effective and useful. You can do this by backing away from a forward moving opponent, giving them space to generate even more forward momentum and right before they make contact-fake with a reach/head tap and then shoot underneath them. You see it all the time at the highest levels of wrestling and mma. Don’t limit your movement brother.

@@WrestlingUniversity that’s awesome, will it be released on BJJ fanatics?
Same here I am here for takedowns (BJJ for almost 3 years now)
I'm here for the same reason. No point sacrificing effectiveness for purism... 😎
100%!
this channel has been a game changer for me.
Your wrestling Playlist is the one I've been using as a extra resource for my new BJJ white belt students. Amazing technique.
So happy to hear that. Let me know if you need any techniques specifically
Where can I find that playlist? Seems to be gone
Sure buddy
These videos are great surprised more people aren't watching
Me too because this is important especially the rhythm which ties it together
I came by this video while searching for wrestling basics , very good info.

Great technicalities! Besides muscle heads, those are the kind of guys you've got to keep on the radar at any tournament. Powerful stuff.
Kyle Dake type of approach towards the mat.
Really all those guys. David Taylor bubba Jenkins Jordan Burroughs Jason Nolf. Very articulate in their understanding of the art.
Your channel is pure gold..
very well spoken and straight to the point. you are great!
This channel was the best suggestion from TH-cam so far 👍
This is crazy good: it's science based without the nonsense ideas like alot of the so called experts on youtube.
Thank you, i want to get in to wrestling next year but i want to prepare now
I’m a grappler but these videos are gold
BJJ brown belt here finally getting into wrestling. Best thing I’ve ever done for bjj. Haven’t pulled guard since.
Thank you for the videos!
Thank you for the video! See you in two weeks once the conditioning is done, lol

wrestlers go with their main hand forward ?

Wrestle with your left lead leg if you are a right handed striker and want to compete in MMA
