I have been raising bees about 20 years now Joseph and love seeing this kind of stuff when it happens. Once I was using an old oil barrel for a work bench cleaning up an old box and a swarm started up. While I was standing there trying to figure from where it started. Anyways the swarm landed on the box I was working on and went right into it.I did nothing but set the lid on it.Whole thing was over from start to finish in less than ten minutes. Thumbs up for you Joseph!!!
Awesome video. I had one last year I was able to catch on camera that was similar but not totally the same. I was sitting enjoying a cup of tea just watching my gals flying and they started spilling out. Started trying to figure how to keep them as they went into a tree way too high to get them down myself. Was banging a pan in hopes that would work like the “wives tale” says about getting them to land. Well they all of the sudden went back into the hive. Yours clustered on the outside. Mine went all the way back in. So I went into the hive once they settled and found the queen. Pulled her and made some splits from additional queens cells within. Was a crazy day as it was my first experience with swarms happening while I was in the yard. This year I had 5 swarms in 3 days. Was blessed enough to catch all but the smallest as it went too high in a tree for me to get and left two days later. Was hard seeing them there and unable to get to them.
I find the pain of one bee sting excruciating. Swell up like a balloon and get red streaks. Horrible. That being said I love honey. So, thank you to all the bee keepers.😘
Great video! Countless swarm videos out there, few like this one. This was a treat! I remember one on Frederick Dunn's Way to Bee returning to an observation hive I think.
Awesome video That is not the only queen in that Hive, Are you sure this was not multiple mating flights pretty sure that was a queen zooming back in then it looks like another one came out. could be drones following? Watch your vid on big screen if you can its totally awesome. You get bees swarming out and swarming in like sea tides, I see this all the time on my wild no touch colonies deep in the forest. I will quite happily upload a close up of what I filmed just the other day if you want to see what a true wild colony looks like amid tidal swarm. You get bees join from other colonies too. If you have related colonies close to each other there is so much interaction between colonies and less robbing etc as well as a bonus. Not sure if its the same with commercial bred bees though.
The queen has to slow down on her egg production so she will get smaller and lighter. If they try to swarm and she can't fly they will come back and try again later. Thank for watching.
Update to my previous comment 2 other queens plus the one you caught, You missed the one towards upper right and the one near the middle entrance. Swarming hives trigger off others, Look at the etrance of the other one preparing, You have some awesome bees there,
@@josephrawls Bare with me I have to get this on the huge screen again and super slow mo it, its hard to even see back on this small screen. I thought I wrote the time stamps down but that was on some one else swarm video. I will probably get back on the screen tomorrow after work. I have two bee rescue jobs on Friday so hopefully do it before then.
For we older guys a little more volume might be helpful. I hate missing "stuff". Great piece of luck finding that queen. Seems to be a fast and successful split with no worries so far - congrats! Joe
I had one of mine do that this year I thank it was a meeting looked in the colony and there was no swarm sales but one open and what I think was the old Queen
With so many hives and so much space, if it were my property, I'd plant rows and rows of wildflowers and hibiscus shrubs all around, probably during the night 🌃 as to not 🚫 disturb any of the hives and then the bees would really be happy to work not far from "🏡 home!"
These hold 30 frames and a following board. I normally don't let them build all the way out. During a good flow I pull capped frames of honey, spin them out and put them back in.
I have 3 frames plastic box where I put the frames for queen and I trap her on this frames only .During the season. I force her to lay and every 4 days I change new frames for her to lay brood. A bit of a hard time till June bunt I never lose a swarm in past 10 years ....pull frames to other weak hives. Make nukes if they make swarm cells. I keep for 527 hives 120 nukes aside in standby and hole summer. Some are doing building of frames to replace some are doing even production. But most of all I keep them for queen and unify for late autumn before winter preparations. But I don’t lose them.
I have five set up with bees. One more without bees at this time. Ive been using it for show and tell at bee club meetings. I need to set it up and put bees in it. Thanks.
If that were my Box of bees I'd take that bond at Queen and I'd take her to a new place and put it in another half and maybe there are the girls who'd fall asleep that would be the smart thing to do I would think Uncle rob said that
IM TRYNG TO LEARN ABOUT BEES,MY FIRST YEAR. CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN ME WHY THE DONT GO BACK ON TH3 SAME BOX,ALSO WOULDN'T IT BE BETTER TO PUT THEM ON A BIGGER BOX? TIA
Sometimes they do go back in the same box. But the will try to swarm again when the queen is able to fly. The small box is what I had at the time and is also easier to handle. They will be put in a large box as soon as they start build out comb and laying.
No, her wing wasn't clipped. Swarming queens have to stop or reduce their egg production and get smaller/lighter to be able to fly. She just hadn't got there yet. Yes, there was new queens emerging.

Where's your cow bell? Thankfully the went back all on their own. Great catch and awesome video. God's peace brother.
It was in the honey house but needs to be in my truck. Thank you.
World record fastest swarm catch right there.😜🐝

Thank you. I saw this happen before and saw the queen right off and caged her. They flew right back in. The same as you I went in and made splits.
My theory about the pots and pans banging... I think they think it's thunder.
Now that's a 'queen catch'!! Very cool video!!
Thank you.
Great catch. I had 1 to swarm put them in a box didn't see a queen and several hrs later they were back in the box they left from. ❤️🐝🤔
Thanks. I guess they sometimes do practice swarms to see if she is ready.
Dang Joey them bees are gona run your ragged bud.🤯Beautiful sight thank you for sharing that with us.😊

Beautiful swarm! Loved how they ride the wind around 7:28
Thanks for sharing brother and God bless!
Thank you. I thought that part was cool my self.
Good work. Thanks for showing us. Haven't seen one that she couldn't fly yet. 👍🍻
Thank you.
Amazing video Joseph , thanks for sharing.
Thank you.
I love watching them trek back into the box.
I do too. Thanks for watching.
What a great video to start my day.Your bee yard looks great.

Thanks, I have seen other colonies join in a swarm too. Its an awesome thing to see.
I wish you could explain to some who don’t understand on why the queen can’t fly and what does that mean for bees and what will happen to the queen?
The queen has to slow down on her egg production so she will get smaller and lighter. If they try to swarm and she can't fly they will come back and try again later. Thank for watching.

Great video Joey. Its so cool how the bees came back.
Thank you. Yes its was cool. Im glad I caught it on camera.
I have put a box on top and they go in it. And I said damn girls you moved one
Yep that works.
I’ve had that before!! I call it a fire drill!!! I had one move in a swarm trap in the apiary this afternoon.
That is a good name for it. lol
I had one of mine do that this year I thank it was a meeting looked in the colony and there was no swarm sales but one open and what I think was the old Queen
Those young queens are sometimes hard to find.
This is about as close as I safely can get to bees. I am fascinated by them but they don't like me, if you know what I mean!
Yes I do know what you mean. My oldest son is the same way. Thanks for watching.
Good swarm Joey, good video :)
Thank you.
Way cool capture!
Thank you.

I have other plans for some of it but. I have been wanting to plant clover on some of it.
How many frames should i supply for deep frames on a horizontal hive ? Thanks

Sounds interesting, I would like to see a video on that technique.
Joey, good timing! I assume that was the old Queen from your longlang? Was she just so big that she couldn’t fly?
Im pretty sure it was the old queen. She was still fairly big.
@@josephrawls Maybe she's just old and forgot how to fly.
Loved it!!
Really liked the music you played during the march!!
Thank You
Thank you.

Thank you.
Dude- so many long Lang’s- how many - I don’t think I’ve seen so many - I’m following you-😊

They look great… I’ve got the Classic Langstroph… always very interesting to see differences 👍
Perfect.!!!
Thank you.
I'm new at bees, but why not just put a queen excluder between the bottom of the box betwen the bottom entrance board to keep em from swarming?
They will keep trying and you will also have a lot of virgin queens trapped inside as well.
Really cool video Joey!
Thank you.
interesting video..thanks..

Now will you catch that swarm and put them in another box
Im not sure what you mean. That's what I did in the video, right after I found the queen.
@@josephrawls yes i realized that after i asked the question

There sure are. Thanks for watching.
had you clipped that queen's wing ?. she was leaving because of a new hatched out queen ??
No, her wing wasn't clipped. Swarming queens have to stop or reduce their egg production and get smaller/lighter to be able to fly. She just hadn't got there yet. Yes, there was new queens emerging.
Couldn't you just put a catch box on top of that one to catch swarm
Yes. That is what I did in the video.
Why can't the queen fly?
Still too heavy.
The queen has to slow down on her egg production so she will get smaller and lighter. If they try to swarm and she can't fly they will come back and try again later.
Yes, seen them come back, false swarm. Time to split before it's to late.
Got my first swarm of the year yesterday.
They split themselves, All I had to do was find the queen and set the box on top.
First!
Yep!
