    These folks called me to come see about a honey bee problem on the back of their house. They were concerned for their children's safety and rightly so. They had two really young children and this was a very active colony. What I found when I opened the soffit was that they had a monster hive in their soffit extending into the attic a little bit. This just happened to be above the three year old daughter's bedroom. The family has only lived here a short while so they didn't know how old the hive was. This extraction would have been a one day job but the weather turned nasty and because I was standing on an aluminum work platform holding a long knife while saturated with honey I felt like a human lightning rod so I decided to knock off and come back the following morning.
    By the second day all the honey on the framing and sheathing had been cleaned up by the bees. It took about an hour and twenty minutes to remove the remainder of the hive and reassemble the soffit and fascia. Although I never saw the queen I know I got her because she is already laying eggs in her new home.

    Every once in a while i'll speak to a "real" beekeeper. They get annoyed when I tell them all my knowledge comes from a youtube channel. They should be impressed I picked from Dirtrooster to learn from. Some day i'll have my own hive, until then, i'll enjoy watching you work yours.

    • @tyndaldi7569

      Truth. I've had quite a few similar situations with different fields of expertise and they ask me how do I know that. When my response is TH-cam/Google, they then proceed to brush me off like I don't know anything. Odd. xD

    • @juanjosedelpinorivas7099
      @juanjosedelpinorivas7099 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Ignorance can be painful sometimes. Maybe they consider people who learn from TH-cam as non experts, despite many of us enjoying videos from beekeepers who enjoy what they do. Honestly, I just ignore all that. I know a thing or two regarding bees thanks to these videos and I've learnt how important they are for the environment.

      Human nature, you learned in a fraction of the time that it may have taken them through the school of experience and hard knocks, sometimes a lifetime to learn such things. Don't be to hard on them. Feel sorrow for them. TH-cam, especially if you check out more than one channel and read the comments, is the next best thing to a mentor, sometimes better. You have found a good channel here. There are others full of good information as well.

      Probably because you don't have hands on experience. You can know exactly what and how to do something in a given situation, but you don't have the motions/ muscle memory people who have been doing this for years have. Just because you know all the words in Hamlet doesn't mean you can act.

    As for dehydration you might want to try some generic baby electrolytes, keep them in an ice chest because they taste better when ice cold.
    We used them when loading square bales of hay along with plenty of water. As soon as you start feeling tired drink a bottle of the electrolytes and you’ll feel revitalized!

    That is a bigun. I sure enjoy watching you and Mr. Ed and JP. It looks like you are living in one of the best places in the country for beekeepers.
    My family is from your part of the country. I was born up in Homer so I have that connection with you all and I’m watching and I’ll keep on watching as Mr. Ed would say.

    Drink some pickle juice after an intensive day sweating it will help with salts and potassium which will aid those cramps. About 8 ounces will do.

      Or just... Be a human and add some normal dietary potassium. Kidney beans, potatoes & sweet potatoes, dark leafy greens like spinach & broccoli, mushrooms, peas, etc.
      You definitely don't need THAT MUCH salt. 😣 Good gosh.

    At about 16:15 in the lower left you can actually see a couple of bees feeding each other through trophallaxus! Cool stuff!
