    As someone who uses exercise to treat their anxiety and depression instead of proper treatment, yes, it makes a big difference.

    Yes exercise does help depression quite a lot, but it's very difficult to be motivated to exercise for people with depression.

      That's the catch 22 isn't it? Another commenter said they used medication to just get over that initial 'wall' and then the positive effects of exercise have eventually helped them almost completely eliminate using medication. The brain is a complex thing, it really doesn't like to play ball does it!?

      oh yeah I completely understand for me I drink a bit of coffee or have something sweet. in about half an hour I feel jittery and energized that I ACTUALLY WANT to exercise hehe. but that just seems to work well with me cause I can't really handle sugar that much😅

      Aishath, haha! So is it the coffee or the sugar!?!?! You need to get sciencing on this! Set up a control, some coffee, some sugar, and some coffee with sugar and see which makes you MORE HYPPPPED for exercise!?!?

      Ryan Dubois Antidepressants can give people the right push to do it. When I started the right medication, exercise made me feel a million times better. Exercise didn’t do anything when I was taking the wrong medication because I kept thinking to myself “what’s the point? Why should I exercise when I’m barely keeping myself alive today?”, which is a totally legit thing to think when you’re in that mindset.

    Excercise definitely helps manage it. I know a lot of people find getting started extremely difficult because of the lack of motivation to implement a new (healthier) lifestyle. Initially, I was put on 300 mg of wellbutrin which allowed me the motivation to 'get started' because I couldn't stand all this negative thinking. I went out for walks daily, which then graduated to running/jogging with the goal of running my first 5k. Eventually I stopped my medication altogether and stuck with my daily excercise routine. After reaching my goal, I moved on to heavy resistance training. And now I've become more self-conscious about what I put into my body and try to live an active and healthy life. This has overall improved my mood. One thing I learned is that when you begin to empower your body to feel stronger and healthier, you will begin to feel more empowered in all areas of your life. Well that's my story... and if you read this far, I hope you find the power within yourself to make a change in your life, even if its something small. 🙂

    I used to be one of those people who didn’t care about my body type/thought it was too surface-level to worry about the gym, but honestly, the gym truly has boosted my well-being and self-image, and helped me get through some pretty serious spells of depression. Not only does it improve your body (I was always very skinny, and have gained about 35 pounds in muscle since I started working out routinely a couple years ago), but it’s also great for just releasing frustration and the stresses of the day. Pushing, pulling things... it truly does help. It’s also a release from being cooped up alone. If you’re nervous about beginning working out/don’t want to alone, really, try to go with a friend or just brave it yourself. It’ll be well worth the changes that come through your hard work.

    It's true.
    Since i started exercising every morning for 15 minutes every day i feel a LOT better
    DO IT PEOPLE AND STICK TO IT.
    NO PAIN NO GAIN.

    It helps me so much I've become addicted to it. When I take a day off, I feel noticably worse.
    I wish I'd started earlier, because my day becomes so much easier after a kickass workout.

    Been trying to run away from depression for 4 years....started running under 3 miles in an hour and 6 miles a week to running 7 miles in an hour and 30+ miles a week. It helps decrease depression and has personally made letting go of my worst habits easier, but the runners high is overrated/stated..... if you suffer from depression, you just shift your perspective and stay depressed just in a physically healthier way.
    It doesn’t matter how far I have come, or how hard I push myself; every achievement/personal record is a new reason to beat myself up... for only running 5 miles this day, or 25 miles that week.
    Does exercise help people with depression? Certainly. Does someone suffering from depression stand any chance of treating/overcoming their depression solely/mainly through exercise therapy? Absolutely not.

    Going to the gym is wonderful for my mood, but my antidepressants help to get me there in the first place.

      @@Luke-vf6qc I was prescribed antidepressants (lexapro) threw them away and started microdosing mushrooms twice a week. A recent study even showed that mushrooms is more effective at curing depression than lexapro, the stuff I was prescribed. Natural is better, psychedelics has no side effects or withdrawals, like antidepressants.

    weightlifting + SSRI is the perfect combination for me. it's been working wonders for a few months now. neither of those could substitute the other, but they are a great team! :)

    In all my life, I've NEVER experienced a runner's high. Not even a little. With every step I want to stop more than the last one. I've run for over an hour and never felt anything but the desire to stop as soon as possible from start to finish.

      David Buschhorn Maybe running isn't the exercise for you then. There are a lot of other exercises that could give you a "runners" high.

      Same, but what I did experience is when I actually enjoyed the exercise, like playing games or running with my dog I do feel it, or at least, something like it, but normal exercise only hurts for me.

      I've been running for a couple years, and I've experienced it exactly once.
      In my opinion, running is masochistic in a sense. It feels terrible every time, and if you run with weights on like I did for a bit, it's actual hell running frequently.
      That being said, watching yourself grow and develop a gap in power almost equivalent to superpowers is a great feeling, mostly offsetting the intimidating nature of running.
      If you ever get a runner's high, it just makes you feel lightweight, pain-free, and better breathing for a couple hours. Interesting, but not the end goal IMO.

      David Buschhorn, you probably haven’t pushed yourself hard enough, Runner’s high is only activated RIGHT BEFORE you’re about to pass out. To get to that point you need to push yourself and have an extremely strong will. When you’re heavily breathing, you’re soles are screaming, and your ribs are hurting, and you’re still pushing yourself then and only then will you feel that euphoric high.

    What I like about this channel is the fact that on one hand the videos are always entertaining and interesting to watch, but on the other they try to remain as objective as possible, by signalling possible errors in the papers they take into account and, of course, by citing the papers themselves.

    I have a suggestion for the show: An episode on the psychology of tattoos. I imagine there are a decent amount of studies on them, and I would be most interested in the reasons why people get them (beyond drunk mistakes, although even that could be explored). I also think I heard something about abuse survivors getting more tattoos and piercings, but I'd like to know if that is really true. I think there's a lot of potential material to discuss here (anti-authority signalling, how people react to others with tattoos, cultural differences, etc.).

    I did start exercising lately because I was going through a bad place with my depression and the medicine didn't seem to be helping anything... It did help me some days -I felt productive and like my day wasn't a waste, or it helped me work out my irritability - but others it was a chore I felt like I had to get through (which was also a good thing I guess, it moved me !) My depression makes me feel empty and lethargic but I am lucky in some ways to be able to at least do this thing without negative feedback from my brain!
    So I know anyone with a mental illness is probably sick of hearing it but if you can, maybe do a dance or something off TH-cam! It helped me and it hopefully will help others!!

    Yes, exercise is good for mental health. But when I'm so depressed that I physically can't get out of bed, or so anxious that I can't leave the house without a panic attack, don't TELL ME EXERCISE WILL CURE ME I WILL PROBABLY SPIT ON YOU.
    But for ongoing treatment, relapse prevention and mild depression/anxiety, exercise is great!

      It's actually what you need to do despite not feeling that you can. I've had most severe gad depression insomnia. Took me 3 months of pushing running hard to come well. Unfortunately I have relapsed but you gotta make yourself x

    I used to be told to go exercise when I was super depressed. I couldn't get out of bed. I couldn't eat. I couldn't go to class. I felt like I was drowning in nothingness and emptiness. I ended up at the gym on campus twice a week for two months at an hour each time. Did it make me feel better? No. I have friends that exercise because it helps their anxiety, but exercise isn't going to make the psychomotor retardation or emptiness that you feel that comes with depression better. I'd like to argue: why would exercise help if I can't even get out of my own bed everyday?

      And then they say something like "just give it a try!" even if you're like I was biking 8+ miles a day, walking 1+ miles a day, walking up to the 5th floor for college class, doing circuit training at the college gym.

      I can see where you're coming from. Forcing myself out of bed is the hardest thing I have to do each day.

      I've been there, and it is totally unfair to tell someone that I'll to go fix their own problem by running. For me, it took therapy and medication to get over the worst of it. Now I am on more of a maintainance program and exercise is an important part of that. When I exercise I feel like I am on an upward spiral, but I still need my meds for when those bad days come. I hope no one sees this and thinks that it is a replacement for professional help.

    Honestly, exercise makes me feel worse. As a chronic depressive, I really wanted exercise to help, but not only did it not help, it made it worse. Though this video helps me understand - apparently my body's stress triggers don't work, so my body always lives in stress. Maybe since the exercise helps by triggering stress receptors, and my receptors don't work, exercise doesn't work for me.

    Even when I had a regular exercising pattern, I didn't see any difference in my mental health state which sucks because I wish it was that easy. I feel like it can help with anger issues but it actually raises my anxiety levels and doesn't really affect depression as far as I can tell. But I see a very mixed opinions online, in medical research and even in the comments so maybe it's a very personal thing like medications. Just because something works for you, doesn't mean it will for everyone.

    OMG, I've heard it so often it causes nausea in me, I still cannot believe it. Exercise makes me angry, besides the exhaustion. After exercising, be it at a fitness club or just walking, I am furious. I have asked professionals, trainers and psychologists. Their response: big disbelieve, surprised stare. Like they never heard of it. I'd love to feel better after exercise. This is so de-motivating. BTW, I almost caused a car accident once after exercise, I have screamed at people that addressed me after exercise (a lot of times). It is like a bag of something scorching hot inside me that wants to pop. And it takes some time to cool down. No, I am definitely not the right person for your sports team.

    Good medication and exercise combine to improve your mental health. There’s no way I could exercise if I didn’t take my antidepressants. Exercise on its own didn’t help my mental health, but when I started the right medication, exercise helped me feel a million times better.

    The problem is when you're depressed it's often hard to force yourself to eat, even things you love eating. I can't even imagine doing exercise when I'm on a low.

      You gotta find ways to fool the system. I started working out to feel better, as I was a skinny, insecure, shy guy who did terribly with girls and had no confidence. When I started working out, I saw results pretty quickly and it made me realize that I can actually change my body and therefore, my life.
      After many years, I not only attained a very impressive physique with cut biceps, 6 pack abs and a v-taper like a Dorito, but I'd also gained a ton of confidence, energy and went from an introvert to a massive extrovert.
      But...despite all that, I still did terribly with girls. Sure, I could approach them, easily talk with them, get them smiling and laughing, but they were never actually interested in me. Whenever I went out, people would look at me, do double takes or even stare at me, including many girls. I got told that I looked like an actor many times, and many of my guy friends asked me for girl advice. Yet I still got nothing but disinterest and rejection from girls.
      Eventually, it became hilarious to me. The fact that I could make the incredible transformation that I made and yet somehow STILL fail, it made me want to keep going. Going to the gym became a source of depression for me. I'd go and see all the girls ignoring me and moving to other areas anytime I went near them, and the dark humor kept me going.
      My mind had switched, and now, it WANTED to be depressed, because I'd done everything I could and still failed. Reinforcing the depression actually felt GOOD and every time I saw a girl pick up and move when I hopped on the machine next to her, every girl who walked in, saw me, then turned around and left, every girl who avoided me yet talked to other guys fueled that depression.
      Basically, depression has become my fuel, and for some ****ed up reason, my mind craves it. Now, I don't recommend getting to this point, as I've since developed a worrying substance abuse problem that no one knows I have because I'm in such good shape, but you said you didn't know how anyone could be extremely depressed and work out, so figured I'd tell ya how I did it.

    The problem with exercising for depression and anxiety is that... I'm literally too depressed and anxious to exercise; depression destroys my executive functioning to get out of bed or out of a chair, and anxiety prevents me from leaving the house alone, and I'm usually just too sad to do anything and the initial struggle of exercise crushes my willingness to actually do it, so I end up paralyzed and unable to exercise.

    Another way exercise can help your general mood is literally the knowledge that you've done some exercise. Sounds obvious, but the benefit of knowing, even subconsciously, that you're ACTIVELY impacting your health in a positive way is massive!

    In my experience starting to work out again was the serious turning point for me out of 8 years of severe depression. There's no reason not to do it. I recommend it to anyone who is having self esteem issues especially. If you're anxious about it, just getting to the gym or outside will be a good level challenge to begin with and slowly expose yourself gradually with better workouts. Especially young men, getting that testosterone flowing can work wonders on your motivation and mood.

    I had heart surgery, by the time I decided I was healthy enough to exercise, I end up having surgery. I get my spleen removed, go to exercise, then I get sick. Or I end up in the hospital for somethings keeping internal bleed or flu. Then I start to feel better, then end up sick. So I gave up trying to exercise. So I just sit watch tv. I do t do any of my hobbies anymore. No motivation anymore. I’ve given up trying. Plus, I live with chronic pain on a daily basis, that’s why I can exercise.

    First you need to have the correct understanding on one thing: Your body affects your mind.
    So, if you're depressed, exercise might seem like a very difficult task. But that's not the only thing you can do. The idea is to make your body feel good. Start finding ways of doing things that make your body feel relaxed and build up from there. And you need a little bit of pain too--without pain there is nothing to pursue. It's a mistake to make complete happiness your goal. True happiness is accompanied by a little bit of pain, but not overwhelmed by it. This has to do with how your neurotransmitters work.. The more indulgent you are, the less likely you'll feel satisfied by anything. But too many stress hinders motivation to do anything at all. What you can do when there is too much stress is context switching. Don't do or focus on things you know for sure you're doomed to fail on. Don't try to stop doing it, but switch to another task. So what's needed is balance between pain and pleasure, with a little tip on the side of pleasure. Not complete removal of pain or pleasure. Don't overcomplicate your feeling, make it a little bit more practical.

    For about 4 years I had pretty bad depression (actually diagnosed, not the "tumblr kind") and exercise did nothing for me. A major environmental change and professional help at a mental institute did the thing.
    I think it's a better advice to first of all consult with a psychiatrist if you feel like you need help, because exercise doesn't work for everyone and it can be valuable time wasted.

    I mean, exercise is great if it's a viable option, but some of us have chronic pain conditions that make any strenuous exercise extremely painful. Stretching and walking are like the only forms of exercise I can do on land (pool exercises are best)

    Oh how much exercise would I need -- PTSD, major depression, general anxiety, social anxiety, others, which sums up to serious borderline. 5 daily medications for that alone. Plus moderate to severe asthma.
    I'd probably die from exhaustion on day 1 XD

      You don't need to sign up for a gym membership and break yourself under the barbell or on the cycle. Daily walks outside does wonders and is a great starting point for more strenuous exercise. Try to find places with some greenery, like a forest or park. Grass, dirt or gravel is easier on the legs and feels good to walk on. Soak up some sun; it makes you more alert and helps with your sleep cycle. Get those lungs breathing some fresh air! Daily walks work your legs, butt and back among others. Make a conscious effort to walk with a proud, straight back and you're building up body and confidence both in no time!
      Not saying that you do, but if you stay indoors, stay still and feel sorry for yourself, you're not going to feel any better anytime soon. Get out there and get after it!

      While it's still a great idea to get up and out, therapy is the key for that one, ideally not CBT and rather something more psychoanalytic. BPD is one of a few conditions where CBT isn't all that effective, and it's important to understand it's gonna take its time.

    I am too sad to exercise I met a person who always sets me up to fail I'm a very frail lady and the lady kept wasting my time. She worked with the health service but no matter how many explanations I gave to her that I needed to meet her at the time because of difficulties walking and dressing dues to my osteopenia. I was so upset I felt sick I cant being myself to run it's not my fault I cant do things because of my bones. It's a crushing sadness but it goes away when I spend no time with these people

    I struggle with Depression myself, took up Crossfit recently and helped a ton, working out hard and being part of a small community of people with like-minded goals is a really good boost to confidence. May not be for everyone, but I can definitely tell the difference at work when I've been to Xfit the night before, there's a vast jump in overall mood and well being.

    Well... not in my case. Got worse episodes ever that landed me in hospital twice when I was at top physical form, I was doing martial arts for years and the more I practiced and the better I was getting physically, the worse I got mentally. It created a disaster for me.

    I get it. But when I’m in the thrawls of depression, and literally laying on the floor incapacitated with sadness, and logic won’t touch my mood, exercise is so hard.... but NASA said 15 minutes on a little trampoline is better than 45 min running

    Don't forget that some people actually don't have the genes that allow them to enjoy exercise.
    Also depressed people might not be able to exercise so as you said... it's not as easy a treatment as something you can swallow

      Bálint Juhász That might be true. However, it seems possible that you've improved marginally without noticing it, and you'd be even worse off without the exercise. I say that because the evidence for the benefits of exercise seem pretty compelling, and I hope you keep on exercising.

      aquamelody8 Hi, I'm not saying it is a cure for mental illness. Much of the time it's not enough. However, I believe that the evidence that exercise does have some mood boosting effects is pretty strong, even if those aforementioned effects won't make everything okay.

      It probably does help you, AT LEAST in a negligible way, it's just that you're not noticing it, also, you know how anti-depressants boost brain functioning and happy hormones inmediatly but it actually takes some time for you to feel it? (Most of the time it takes MONTHS for you to feel it) it may be something like that, but exercise DOES help.
      Also, you can't expect it to cure you, depression is an illness, it just isn't enough unless the depression's very mild or maybe moderate, what you need is therapy and/or medication, AND also healthy lifestyle changes, exercising is just one of those necessary lifestyle changes, which are only one factor that works towards curing you. But alone, it just won't cut it

      ozdergecko True, it helps, doesn't cure the worste depression.. I had moderate depression, now it's mild.. When I (finally) got a boost from the meds, to have (a little ) motivation to work out, then the exercise helped me sleep better, and sleep and exercise together helped me a lot.. I'm almost off the meds, but will take them back if I have to.. life has some colour and direction again :) I hope You the best!

    They were Norwegians, they are generally more depressive, than other countrys.
    the "+44% Depression" may go down for any other country that is somewhat south of norway.
    And you should not be depressed as a normal state not after doing something.
    If you have to exercise to handle your depression, than this seems like treating the symptoms and not the cause.
    For example if you have a burning building (depression) and you have a water hose (exercise), than you are constantly butting water on the flames to extinguish them, that is ok, but as soon as you stop, the flames come back.
    The cause should be found out, so that it does not start to ignite over and over again.

      aye relax mate, depression is a neurological/psychological disorder that isn't easily cured. Exercising can be a good method of reducing symptoms and thus allowing victims to lead a more productive life, which tends to help as well. Also, the better a person is, the easier depression becomes to treat. You're acting as though anyone here said that "exercise can cure depression", when no one has said anything of the sort. It was a common claim that exercise could improve symptoms of depression, and the point of this video was to explain the science of the claims and look at them from a purely scientific and logical perspective. Its not about exercise being the ultimate solution.

    I used to do exercise, resistance, weight training and what not. I always felt awful for days after and it effected my life as I felt too ill and fatigued to do anything, missing work etc.. It made me feel depressed also.
    Turned out later I found out I had some form of CFS and now exercise is a no no. I feel not the best but much better than when I was physically active and a lot more mentally sharp and happy.

    I hate the phrase “just exercise”. I’m not going to deny that it CAN give positive results, but that doesn’t mean it WILL. And it’s the same thing with a depressed person exercising; just because they can exercise (and possibly have great results), that doesn’t mean they will. Depression has certain symptoms in certain people, so some people can’t even get out of bed. Plus, many athletes have spoken out about having depression or other mental health problems. Again, I won’t deny that it can help; for me personally, if I’m not feeling too down, exercise has given temporary help. But it depends on the person and their depression (or other mental illness)!

    Where is the research about how in many cases depression wont let a person do that?
    I know I'm certainly not the only one who when their brain isn't letting them get out of bed for most the day, That certainly wouldn't change when exercise is supposed to be the motivating task.
    I get where this is coming from and the information is good, but its certainly not the whole picture, it basically ignores one of the big symptoms of depression.

      The message is not that "exercise is the only solution" it's that "exercise can be a solution". The purpose of this video wasn't to go out and tell people to get out of bed and walk. It's just clinically backed, peer-reviewed research supporting the popular claim that exercise can elevate mood. Anyway, depression can effect dopamine levels too, which has been researched in plenty of studies. So, yeah, don't worry. You're not the only one with that problem. A lot of people struggle with motivation. I also decided not to identify with anything I said in this comment because it doesn't matter what I've experienced, the facts matter. Just trying to help.

    Exercising got health washed into something you do to "burn fat" but if you want to lose weight you have to eat less. it's not even half the battle it's more like 1/3

    When I exercise and my heart rate increases I feel like I'm having an anxiety attack. Its very difficult to overcome.

    Maybe it’s people who are not depressed exercise. That is mistaking cause for effect.

    But to condense this with contemporary understanding, we need to be a bit pedantic. It's not a treatment for depression, anxiety, etc. in the vain of mood disorders. However, it can *help* treat depression, anxiety, etc. People need to stop claiming it's a replacement for therapy and medication. To put it simply and just as with cannabis, they aren't treatments in and of themselves but are great adjunct options to help speed and maintain recovery. So pop an edible and go for a jog. About the only way to make cardio fun anyway.

    Hi! I have severe anxiety and depression and have had it since I was in high school. I have been told many times to go outside more (Texas plus wasps equals no), to eat healthier (can only do so much with a budget and one town grocer), and, of course, exercise.
    None of these treated my mental disorders more than a small uptick from "miserable" to "somewhat functional", which meant bad days would often cut off any progress towards healthier habits for at least a month and set be back to square one.
    I am only making progress now because I am on a medication that makes up for what my brain couldn't do no matter what natural treatment I used.
    This video glosses over this fact with a mention that these results were mostly for people with mild to moderate depression and comes off as misleading and leaning towards ableist.

    As someone who has suffered with depression for years and only got on antidepressants recently... exercise doesnt work on the severely depressed brain. Part of depression is that your brain stops being able to produce the chemicals related to reward and happiness properly. I have a friend who goes to the gym everyday and he introduced me to it. I continued and continued and not only did my mood not improve much at all, the gains I should have been making with the relative effort I put in did not show results.
    I am now on anti-depressants and feel great, I am able to exercise with actual motivation but even more than that gains are incredibly rapid. I think the biases you pointed out are likely to be the case, they may be pro-exercise or just have mild to moderate depression, it does not work with severe forms, and even if the depressed individual can motivate themselves to the gym, the brain doesnt seem to regulate the repairs properly either, let alone produce the happy chemicals from working out. My gym friend was really shocked that I could fall asleep during workouts between sets, because I felt the tiredness but not the adrenaline.
